Subject: [AISWorld] CFP: The Third IEEE International Workshop on
Benchmarking, Performance Tuning and Optimization for Big Data
Applications (BPOD 2019)
Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2019 07:43:53 -0400
From: Jianwu Wang <jianwu(a)umbc.edu>

The Third IEEE International Workshop on Benchmarking, Performance
Tuning and Optimization for Big Data Applications (BPOD 2019)
Collocated with IEEE BigData 2019, special issue with BDR (Big Data
Research)
One day during December 9-12, 2019, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Website:
https://userpages.umbc.edu/~jianwu/BPOD/
=============================================
Users of big data are often not computer scientists. On the other hand,
it is nontrivial for even experts to optimize performance of big data
applications because there are so many decisions to make. For example,
users have to first choose from many different big data systems and
optimization algorithms to deal with complex structured data, graph
data, and streaming data. In particular, there are numerous parameters
to tune to optimize performance of a specific system and it is often
possible to further optimize the algorithms previously written for
"small data" in order to effectively adapt them in a big data
environment. To make things more complex, users may worry about not only
computational running time, storage cost and response time or
throughput, but also quality of results, monetary cost, security and
privacy, and energy efficiency. In more traditional algorithms and
relational databases, these complexities are handled by query optimizer
and other automatic tuning tools (e.g
., index selection tools) and there are benchmarks to compare
performance of different products and optimization algorithms. Such
tools are not available for big data environment and the problem is more
complicated than the problem for traditional relational databases.
The aim of this workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners
together to better understand the problems of optimization and
performance tuning in a big data environment, to propose new approaches
to address such problems, and to develop related benchmarks, tools and
best practices.
Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
- Theoretical and empirical performance model for big data applications
- Optimization for Machine Learning and Data Mining in big data
- Benchmark and comparative studies for big data processing and analytic
platforms
- Monitoring, analysis, and visualization of performance in big data
environment
- Workflow/process management & optimization in big data environment
- Performance tuning and optimization for specific big data platforms or
applications (e.g., No-SQL databases, graph processing systems, stream
systems, SQL-on-Hadoop databases)
- Performance tuning and optimization for specific data sets (e.g.,
scientific data, spatio data, temporal data, text data, images, videos,
mixed datasets)
- Case studies and best practices for performance tuning for big data
- Cost model and performance prediction in big data environment
- Impact of security/privacy settings on performance of big data systems
- Self adaptive or automatic tuning tools for big data applications
- Big data application optimization on High Performance Computing (HPC)
and Cloud environments

AIMS AND SCOPE
LPNMR 2019 is the fifteenth in the series of international meetings
on logic programming and non-monotonic reasoning. LPNMR is a forum
for exchanging ideas on declarative logic programming, non-monotonic
reasoning, and knowledge representation. The aim of the conference is
to facilitate interactions between researchers and practitioners
interested in the design and implementation of logic-based programming
languages and database systems, and those working in knowledge
representation and nonmonotonic reasoning. LPNMR strives to encompass
theoretical and experimental studies that have led or will lead to
advances in declarative programming and knowledge representation, as
well as their use in practical applications. A Doctoral Consortium will
also be a part of the program.
This year's edition of the conference seeks to raise submissions devoted
towards use of LPNMR techniques in emerging applications stemming from
such areas as deep learning, robotics, cybersecurity, modeling
cyberphysical systems, and human-aware AI. Aspects that have been
studied in commonsense reasoning, inconsistency tolerance, and handling
of dynamic knowledge appear essential in enabling these emerging
applications to provide explanations and justifications of their
outcomes. LPNMR 2019 aims to bring together researchers from LPNMR core
areas and application areas of the aforementioned kind in order to share
research experiences, promote collaboration and identify directions for
joint future research.

Subject: [AISWorld] Communications of the Association for Information
Systems opens a department of Digital Design
Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2019 08:37:21 +0300
From: Tuure Tuunanen <tuure(a)tuunanen.fi>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Dear All,
The Communications of the Association for Information Systems has opened
a new department for papers dealing with digital design. The department
will be led by the associate editors Andreas Drechsler, Dirk Hovorka,
and Tuure Tuunanen. The department will focus on extending design
science research and acknowledging design studies in digital contexts.
More specifically, design and designing can be broadly characterised by
activities that lead to new states or configurations of the world.
Design and designing are a concern in multiple academic and practical
domains and have been a core focus of information systems (IS) research
since the formative years of the IS discipline. In more recent times, IS
research has been concerned with design and designing in two overlapping
but distinct approaches.
The first approach, design science research, is one of scientific
problem solving (Simon, 1996) and embraces engineering and
sociotechnical perspectives with technical and operational solutions as
a foundation of IS scholarship (Bostrom & Heinen, 1977). The focus is on
the synthesis of novel solutions through iteratively mobilizing and
integrating scientific knowledge into “shaping artefacts and events to
create a more desirable future” (Boland, 2004, p. 106). Procedurally, it
emphasizes scientific methods, engineering, and construction of
sociotechnical artefacts as a way of knowledge construction,
dissemination and transfer (Hevner, March, Park, & Ram, 2004; Peffers,
Tuunanen, Rothenberger, & Chatterjee, 2007; Winter, 2008).
A second approach, design studies, focuses on designing activities as
open and forward‐looking pathways toward as‐yet‐unknown creations
(Cross, 2001; Germonprez, Hovorka, & Collopy, 2007; Hirschheim & Newman,
1991). This approach shifts the focus to the social processes and
anticipatory foresight (Ingold, 2013) in which designers improvise a
passage between imagination and recalcitrant materials in alignment with
“what technology can do for people, the places it will go and the needs
it will address” (Dourish & Bell, 2011, p. 4). Although artefacts may be
produced, this approach focuses on social and organizational
configurations, practices, and on developing correspondence between
actions, values, andmaterial things.
The discourse surrounding these distinct approaches is one illustration
that the IS field has a complicated relationship with design. For
instance, we have witnessed debates during the inception and evolution
of design science research regarding knowledge creation, theorization,
and the centrality of the artefact (Gregor & Hevner, 2013; Nunamaker Jr,
Chen, & Purdin, 1991; Peffers et al., 2007; Pries‐Heje & Baskerville,
2008; Venable, 2006). Past and present editorial commentaries about how
design might form contributions welcomed by IS journals (Baskerville,
Lyytinen, Sambamurthy, & Straub, 2010; Österle et al., 2010; Peffers,
Tuunanen, & Niehaves, 2018; Rai, 2017) demonstrate that this
long‐lasting discussion has not lost valence, intensity, or relevance to
our community.
In response, the Communications of the Association for Information
Systems has established the Department on Digital Design as a venue for
IS researchers focusing on “design and designing” to share their work
with the IS community. We envisage this department to be a forum for
exchange, a distribution channel for novel ideas about design, for new
approaches, new findings, new artefacts, and new discussions. In line
with the overall mission of the Communications of the Association for
Information Systems (https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/about.html)
<https://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/about.html)> we envisage this department
to be a standing outlet for academic discourse on digital design that is
open, inclusive and with a broad purview. Submissions welcome!

Call for Papers - JAIS Theory Development Workshop
Call for Papers for the JAIS-sponsored Theory Development Workshop
associated with ICIS 2019 in Munich, Germany.
Dear Colleague:
Since December 2002, the Journal of the Association for Information
Systems (JAIS) has organized a number of successful Theory Development
Workshops. In 2019, they will hold the 17th JAIS Theory Development
Workshop immediately before ICIS 2019. This workshop is scheduled to
take place from 1:30 - 5:00 pm on Sunday, December 15, 2019. The exact
location of the workshop will be announced at a later date.
Workshop information
The workshop promotes scholarship that focuses on new theoretical
advances in the information systems field. Workshop participants discuss
drafts of their theoretical work with JAIS board members, and other
workshop participants.
Authors are not obliged to submit their work to JAIS, although the
journal is a top-quality outlet that welcomes conceptual, theoretical,
and empirical papers. In fact, a number of papers that have received
feedback in past workshops have been submitted to the journal for
publication consideration each year, and some have been published.
Prior to the workshop, participants whose papers have been accepted for
discussion in the workshop will receive one to three papers to read and
review. The reviews follow a brief, structured format, and they are
intended to be constructive, offering recommendations for moving the
work forward.
During the workshop, participants meet in small groups where
participants receive feedback from JAIS board members and provide
feedback on other participants' papers. The JAIS board members
facilitate the discussion such that each participant has equal time to
receive comments from the group's members. Please consult the JAIS
website for the list of senior editors and the editorial board members
(http://aisel.aisnet.org/jais/).
Selection for the JAIS Theory Development Workshop is competitive. This
workshop primarily addresses theory building, conceptual foundations,
and model development issues. To be considered, a paper must demonstrate
significant theory development, with or without data. Please note that
there is a small fee associated with attending the workshop.
Papers currently accepted, under review, or under revision at other
journals or conferences should not be submitted.

Subject: [AISWorld] CFP: 5th Post-ICIS SIG Social Inclusion (SIGSI)
Research Workshop 2019
Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2019 23:07:42 +0000
From: Hala Annabi <hpannabi(a)uw.edu>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
5th Post-ICIS SIG Social Inclusion (SIGSI) Research Workshop 2019
Munich, Germany - Wednesday December 18, 2019
Submission deadline Friday, October 4, 2019, with notification of
acceptance or rejection by Monday, October 14, 2019.
SOCIAL INCLUSION: THE HEART OF INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS & INFORMATION SYSTEMS
In the 2019 Post-ICIS research workshop, SIGSI explores the interplay
between social inclusion, information systems, and innovation.
Innovation in our world is fueled by the interconnectedness of ideas,
experiences, and perspectives from individuals and societies across the
globe using a range of information systems. Consequently, it is
imperative that we understand the role of information systems in
individuals' and groups' full participation in the
normatively-prescribed activities of the societies in which they are
embedded.
We invites submission of research ideas, extended abstracts,
research-in-progress, and full papers related to the workshop theme of
social inclusion in innovation ecosystems and information systems. In
addition, we welcome relevant theoretical, empirical, and intervention
submissions that relate to the mission of the AIS Special Interest Group
on Social Inclusion (SIGSI). SIGSI promotes research, pedagogy, and
outreach on all aspects of social inclusion in the field of Information
Systems (IS). The goal of such efforts is to stimulate greater diversity
of thought and people in AIS and the IS field overall, and participation
of all our members in a more socially-aware and inclusive discipline.
Relevant research topics include: the role of social inclusion in
facilitating innovation across boundaries, how to design IS and
innovation ecosystems based on social inclusion principles; critical
analysis of measures of efficiency and effectiveness in relation to
innovation; the gender gap in the IS field; gender minorities, inclusion
of the differently-abled, inclusion of neurodiversity in IT,
intersectionality of identities (such as ethnicity, gender and
socio-economic class), socioeconomic divisions that impact access to or
use of technology, digital inclusion, under-served groups, and a range
of topics related to human diversity, and the "haves" and "have nots" in
interconnected digital environments.
Submitted research can be conceptual, analytical, design-oriented, or
empirical. The workshop will include a keynote address, "ignite"
lightning talks, and roundtable discussions of submitted work.
*** Instructions for Contributors ***
We welcome:
* Completed research papers (10 pages)
* Research-in-progress papers (5 pages)
* Extended abstracts (2 pages)
* Research ideas (1 page)
All submissions will be reviewed. Papers should not have been published
previously in proceedings or journals or concurrently under review
elsewhere; however, it is a general aim of the workshop that accepted
papers will subsequently be submitted to high quality outlets.
*** Important Dates ***
Submissions Deadline: Friday, October 4, 2019
Notification of acceptance or rejection: Monday, October 14, 2019
Author registration deadline: Friday, November 15, 2019 (At least one
author must register and attend the workshop to present, if the work is
accepted).
