Scope
This special issue focuses on the impact of new technologies on tourism and
hospitality industry. It solicits research that focuses on new
technologies that are early in the adoption and diffusion cycle for the
industry from the perspectives of travelers, companies, market, policy, and
society. We welcome both qualitative and quantitative research from
tourism, information systems, and operational management fields.
Specifically, this special issue addresses the following questions:
- Travelers: From an individual’s perspective, tourists get
travel-related information such as destinations, accommodations,
attractions, cost, and time more easily through the Internet, mobile apps,
and social media. Based on these considerations, new technologies not only
help travelers to perform information search in a pre-trip phase but also
allow them to enjoy the freedom of choice at a destination. In combination
with the use of advanced technologies, a mobile interface gets local
businesses into globally accessible and interconnected business field.
Informatics should provide proper accounting for data presentation,
processing, and communication of information through location-based and
context-aware services to collect, process, analyze and visualize
information. All tourism actors and applications have interest in smart,
connected products, new functionality, greater reliability, higher product
utilization.? Travelers are looking for optimized tourism products based on
their specific time and budget. Data-driven information can enrich travel
experiences. However, despite the importance of information and
data analysis in tourism, there are several challenges and opportunities
including bridging digital and physical sphere, using sensors and
smartphones as core technologies, adopting big and open data as the
lifeblood, technology-mediated co-creation, ecosystem structure for
tourism, and public-private-consumer collaboration in data/information
exchange. Thereby, how new technologies are influencing travelers? decision
makings and changing travel experiences are of interest to researchers and
businesses.
- Contextualization: Informatics and data analytics techniques have been
used in different contexts. By analyzing user's click stream data, text
data, image data, or visual data, web analytics can provide a trace of
user's (i.e., travelers) online activities. How organizations contextualize
promotional strategies and the outcomes of the strategies? How do new
technologies enable contextualization of traveling preferences, product and
service offerings, and recommendations? How to contextualize traveler's
characteristics and destination attributes?
- Travel organizations: How do new technologies change the tourism
industry? How do the technologies have new roles within the industries?
What is the effect of the adoption of new technology on performance while
traveling? How does new technology enable and inhibit the decision-making
process in the tourism and hospitality industry? How the technologies for
tourism and hospitality collaborates with other business functions,
including marketing, logistics, and customer service?
- Policy and societal topics: How would companies and travelers react to
privacy and security policy and data governance that protect travelers?
personal information, travel information, technology access and usage? How
should the companies in tourism and hospitality industry that develop,
commercialize, or use new technologies for tourism marketing act and engage
in public debate about the consequences of their actions on the industry,
companies, travelers, and society? What public risks do new tourism
technologies bring and how would the society react? What are the
consequences of new tourism policy initiatives on new technologies for
travelers or companies?

technologies for the tourism and hospitality industry
- Network analysis of a networked tourism industry
- Business intelligence for smart tourism technologies and services
- State of the art and new business models using new technologies in the
tourism and hospitality industry
- Success and failure factors of new technologies in the tourism and
hospitality industry (A.I., IoT, augmented reality, virtual reality
applications and services)
- Big Data-driven services in the tourism and hospitality industry
- Legal and political issues of technologies in the tourism and
hospitality industry
- Diffusion barriers of new technologies in the tourism and hospitality
industry
- Smart tourism applications and its business model
- Individual, business impacts of new technologies in the tourism and
hospitality industry
- The benefits and risks of new technologies in the tourism and
hospitality industry
- Cross cultural issues related to new technologies in the tourism and
hospitality industry
- The role of new technologies in creating and sustaining tourism
business ecosystems
- Issues related to robots in the tourism and hospitality industry.
- Operational management issues of the tourism and hospitality industry
using new technologies

Papers reviewed: April 30, 2020
Revised papers reviewed and accepted: June 31, 2020
Final versions of accepted papers delivered: August 30, 2020
We welcome papers from a wide range of disciplines as well as papers based
on either quantitative or qualitative approaches. Given the tight schedule,
there will not be enough time for major revision. Therefore, when preparing
your submission, it is strongly required to try your best to make your
paper publishable as it is. Authors are invited to submit original and
unpublished papers.
