Subject: [AISWorld] Call for the ICIS2019 PDW "Studying and Theorizing
Knowledge Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines"
Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2019 16:07:35 +0000
From: Stella Pachidi <s.pachidi(a)jbs.cam.ac.uk>

"Studying and Theorizing Knowledge Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines”
ICIS 2019 Professional Development Workshop (PDW)
Date: Monday 16th December 12:00 - 14:30 (lunch included)
Event Location: International Congress Center München (ICM), Room TBC
Call for registration
Abstract:
Organizing knowledge work and workers has been a long-standing theme in
information systems research (Bailey et al. 2010; Brown and Duguid 2000;
Dougherty and Dunne 2012; Newell et al. 2009; Orlikowski 2002; Schultze
2000). Maintaining a focus on knowledge work is critical insofar as
so-called “intelligent” machines, such as deep learning algorithms, are
changing the ways through which knowledge is created and shared in
organizations and epistemic communities more generally (Faraj et al.
2018). Understanding the consequences of emerging knowledge
worker-intelligent machine (KWIM) reconfigurations is of huge practical
and theoretical significance (Rai et al. 2019). In this PDW, we are
interested in exploring the potential opportunities and challenges for
studying and theorizing knowledge work in the age of intelligent
machines. We will jointly map the current terrain of knowledge work
research; discuss what KWIM reconfigurations IS researchers may need to
attend to; explore what alternative theoretical lenses might be useful;
and reflect on how to tackle potential methodological challenges in
studying KWIM reconfigurations.
PDW Format:
The workshop is intended to be highly interactive. We will kick-off with
a short introduction by the organizers and a panel discussion with our
facilitators, all of whom are experts in the field of knowledge work:
Nicholas Berente, University of Notre Dame USA
Panos Constantinides, University of Warwick UK
Samer Faraj, McGill University Canada
Marleen Huysman, VU Amsterdam The Netherlands
Natalia Levina, New York University USA
Hila Lifshitz-Assaf, New York University USA
We will continue with round table discussions, facilitated by the
aforementioned facilitators, on the following topics:
A. Learning algorithms and the changing nature of knowledge work
B. Automating, Augmenting and Assembling Knowledge Work
C. The politics of KWIM reconfigurations
D. Epistemological and methodological opportunities and challenges
We will conclude in a plenary format, in which we will cover debriefing
from the round table discussions, a general Q&A, and a discussion on
what further steps we can take to advance research on knowledge work in
the era of intelligent machines.
Registration details:
The PDW is free of charge. However, to ensure PDW discussions are
engaging there is a limited number of spaces. Therefore, participants
need to pre-register here<https://forms.gle/KwWbNZ4xFHMnc5YM6> by
November 15th 2019.
The workshop organizers are looking forward to welcoming you in Munich.

acceptance or rejection by Monday, October 14, 2019.
SOCIAL INCLUSION: THE HEART OF INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS & INFORMATION SYSTEMS
In the 2019 Post-ICIS research workshop, SIGSI explores the interplay
between social inclusion, information systems, and innovation.
Innovation in our world is fueled by the interconnectedness of ideas,
experiences, and perspectives from individuals and societies across the
globe using a range of information systems. Consequently, it is
imperative that we understand the role of information systems in
individuals' and groups' full participation in the
normatively-prescribed activities of the societies in which they are
embedded.
We invites submission of research ideas, extended abstracts,
research-in-progress, and full papers related to the workshop theme of
social inclusion in innovation ecosystems and information systems. In
addition, we welcome relevant theoretical, empirical, and intervention
submissions that relate to the mission of the AIS Special Interest Group
on Social Inclusion (SIGSI). SIGSI promotes research, pedagogy, and
outreach on all aspects of social inclusion in the field of Information
Systems (IS). The goal of such efforts is to stimulate greater diversity
of thought and people in AIS and the IS field overall, and participation
of all our members in a more socially-aware and inclusive discipline.
Relevant research topics include: the role of social inclusion in
facilitating innovation across boundaries, how to design IS and
innovation ecosystems based on social inclusion principles; critical
analysis of measures of efficiency and effectiveness in relation to
innovation; the gender gap in the IS field; gender minorities, inclusion
of the differently-abled, inclusion of neurodiversity in IT,
intersectionality of identities (such as ethnicity, gender and
socio-economic class), socioeconomic divisions that impact access to or
use of technology, digital inclusion, under-served groups, and a range
of topics related to human diversity, and the "haves" and "have nots" in
interconnected digital environments.
Submitted research can be conceptual, analytical, design-oriented, or
empirical. The workshop will include a keynote address, "ignite"
lightning talks, and roundtable discussions of submitted work.

Internet of things (IoT) has made it possible for many devices (sensors,
RFID, GPS, and many other types of smart devices) to acquire data on
product use in context so as to provide insight and help organizations
act to create value. While advanced technologies like big data analytics
and machine learning techniques can help gain insight, there are still
ways that are needed in order to assist organizations to take actions
from these insights. Organizations who can sustain value creation over
time are those who can move from analysis to insight to action by
evaluating and implementing viable solutions quickly to meet customer needs.
This Special Issue seeks to explore how IoT advances are used by cities
for sustainability along multiple dimensions. Some examples include
water resource management, efficient energy use, and air quality
assurance, as well as improving citizen interactions in support of
public policy formulation on health, transport, education, and economic
development. Specifically, we are looking for innovative tools and
techniques used for data analysis, models, and architectures used to
gain insights, simulate performance, and coordinate action, as well as
leadership models to implement actions.

*The 2019 Pre-ICIS SIGBPS Workshop on Blockchain Technologies and Smart
Contracts*
Workshop Theme: Security and Trust in the Blockchain Era
December 15, 2019
Munich, Germany
http://2019.sigbps.org/
*Submission Deadline: *September 30, 2019*
Dear Colleagues:
We cordially invite you to submit your latest research results to
SIGBPS2019. The deadline is fast approaching.
---------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------------------
SIGBPS workshops aim to extend the boundaries of research in business
process management and services science by incorporating new elements that
have not been sufficiently emphasized in the past. The recent rapid
advances in information systems have created both challenges and
opportunities to develop new business services via innovative business
processes. This workshop promotes theoretical research in business process
management and service science.
On one hand, driven by the need to solve practical problems, the business
process modeling and automation research has been largely prescriptive.
There has been a lack of strong theories in this area, and we believe that
it is essential to develop new theories about business process and service
automation. On the other hand, more recently blockchain is poised to become
the most exciting invention after the Internet; while the latter connects
the world to enable new business models based on online business processes,
the former will help resolve the trust issue more efficiently via
distributed and decentralized computing. While the recent advancements in
fintech made blockchain a practical technology, smart contracts are now
getting more attention. Smart contracts are essentially a transaction
protocol that executes the terms of a computerized contract. The potential
business impacts of blockchain and smart contracts are challenging existing
business models, leading to fascinating research opportunities in business
process and service applications. The purpose of the SIGBPS workshop this
year is to provide an interdisciplinary forum to discuss new research
directions in the areas of building trustworthy business processes and
services with blockchains and smart contract technologies. We have seen
testimonial studies on how to examine, design, implement, and deploy
solutions based on blockchains and smart contracts to resolve research and
practical issues in BPS applications. Such applications may benefit many
research frontier domains, for example, information systems in Finance,
Supply chain, Education and Healthcare.
This year’s workshop will focus on the research and development of
blockchain technologies and applications with a workshop theme called
“Security and Trust in the Blockchain Era.” This theme is to signify the
unique capability of blockchain technologies and applications in the
enablement of secure and efficient information flows across organizational
boundaries, resulting in lower process costs, better business trust, and
more novel business collaborations.
Given the nature and purposes of this workshop, we invite research papers
of no more than five pages that are well articulated and formatted in
single line spacing, Times New Roman, 11-point font, and 1 inch margin all
around. We particularly seek position papers but also welcome conceptual
papers with either theoretical or application flavors, as well as
research-in-progress papers. Case, empirical, and behavioral studies
relevant to the following topics are welcome.
Suggested research topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Security issues in blockchain-enabled systems and platforms
- Computational trust in blockchain-enabled systems and applications
- Open collaboration processes and services in blockchain-enabled systems
- Design science research in BPS applications of blockchain-driven smart
contracts
- Technical and application solutions for smart contracts and BPS
applications
- Empirical studies on blockchain, smart contracts and BPS applications
- Trust, privacy, and behavioral issues in smart contracts under blockchains
- Regulation, governance, and standardization of smart contracts in BPS
applications
- BPS applications of contract theory in smart contract management
- Blockchain-driven protocols for BPS smart contracts
- BPS applications with blockchain and smart contracts in healthcare,
supply chain, finance, education
- BPS case studies of blockchain and smart contract adoption
- Economics and game theory of smart contracts
The workshop will be organized with special tracks of interests.
Researchers with expertise in the above topics are welcome to direct the
paper solicitation and reviewing within one track, which might be, but not
limited to, one of the following:
- Security and Trust in Blockchain-enabled Systems
- Integration of smart contracts in workflow systems
- Process-centric consensus modeling for DAO
- Service science and engineering in blockchain ecosystems
- Blockchain enabled supply chain processes and finance
- Innovative Blockchain applications in industry
Please email hsubram(a)fiu.edu, jxu(a)bentley.edu, and/or
rong.liu(a)stevens.edu if
you would like to get more information, or if you are considering to direct
the paper solicitation in one of the areas above.

Internet of Things (IoT) and CPS (Cyber-Physical Systems) provide
mechanisms that are monitored and controlled by computing algorithms
that are tightly coupled among users and the Internet. That is, the
hardware and the software entities are intertwined and they typically
function on different time and location-based scales. Security,
privacy and trust in the Internet of Things (IoT) and CPS
(Cyber-Physical Systems) are different from conventional security.
Different security concerns revolve around the collection, aggregation
of data or transmission of data over the network. Analysis of
cyber-attack vectors and provision of appropriate mitigation
techniques are important research areas with respect to these systems.
Adoption of best practices and maintaining a balance between ease of
use and security are again crucial for the effective performance of
these systems.
This book will discuss, present techniques and methodologies as well
wide range of examples and illustrations to effectively show the
principles, algorithms, challenges, and applications of security,
privacy, and trust for IoT and CPS. It will be full of valuable
insights into security, privacy, and trust in IoT and CPS and will
cover most of the important security aspects and current trends that

Organizers
Hans-Georg Fill, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
Julius Köpke, Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt, Austria
Aims and Scope
Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) have recently gained much
attention in academia and industry. Well-known examples are
blockchain-based approaches for cryptocurrencies or smart contracts for
the automated, distributed and transparent execution of algorithms
without intermediaries. For introducing these technologies in real-life
enterprise scenarios it is however essential to align them with business
requirements and show their added value. For this purpose, methods of
conceptual modeling can contribute for enabling the communication in
organizations, deriving and aligning requirements for technical
implementations or even creating code that can be executed using DLT. In
this workshop we thus aim to bring together researchers working on the
interface between conceptual modeling and DLT for presenting and
discussing their most recent research results. The workshop will be held
for the first time in the context of the Modellierung'2020 conference in
Vienna, Austria.
Submissions
For the workshop we solicit full research papers (max. 8 pages),
research in progress papers (max. 4 pages) and demonstration papers (max
