CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
E-Commerce Mechanisms and Regional Development:
Economic Growth, Political Reform and Social Progress
A book edited by Dr. Mohamed Elbannan
Cairo University, Egypt
Proposal Submission Dedline: January 31, 2009
Full Chapter Submission Deadline: March 31, 2009
To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=638
Introduction
For world regions striving to find a place in the modern, globalized
world, e-commerce represents a revolutionary means of achieving economic
and socio-political goals. E-commerce helps firms gain competitive
advantage, expand customer base, and achieve cost reductions. Individual
users attain a higher standard of living. E-governments improve the
efficiency of citizen services, streamline internal administration, and
further democratic choice. Additionally, research suggests that e-commerce
helps further national economic goals, including the rationalization of
financial and investment activities. Despite these numerous advantages,
the adoption of e-commerce is still relatively slow in many regions, due
to high cost of implementation and the inadequate economic and regulatory
infrastructures impeding e-commerce development. The pace of adoption and
the contributions to achievements of national goals, however, are directly
related to perceived benefits versus risks and national cultural values.
The book evaluates the relative effectiveness of e-commerce in furthering
regional development goals, and proposes measures to advance the
developmental impact of e-commerce.
E-Commerce is an interdisciplinary area that involves marketing,
management, strategy and entrepreneurship as they relate to the use of
information and communications technology (ICT) applications in business.
The book gives present and future practitioners of e-commerce a solid
foundation on the effects of the different aspects of e-commerce in World
regions. The focus of the book is on what a manager needs to know about
the socio-political regional attributes, economic and regulatory
infrastructure, business strategy formulation and implementation, and
public policy issues in order to make effective business decisions. Within
this framework, the chapters will provide a deep exploration of core
concepts of online strategy supplemented by a wide variety of examples,
case studies, and real-life explanations.
Objective of the Book
The book discusses the applications, issues and challenges related to
e-commerce mechanisms in world regions in the context of its role in
furthering regional development. The main theme of the book is the extent
to which e-commerce applications have contributed to regional development.
Accordingly, the book shall constitute a multi-disciplinary discussion of
a broad range of e-commerce subtopics in sufficient detail, at multiple
levels of analysis. That is, it is an integrated discussion of firm-level
e-commerce mechanisms, individual customer/citizen interactions, and
e-government applications. The book shall constitute a roadmap for proper
implementation of e-commerce (what should be) as well as a documentation
of current practices and issues.
In an emerging market setting, the potential for regional economic growth,
political reforms, and social progress owing to e-commerce applications is
an important issue for academic study. However, prior research related to
the emerging regions is fragmented and is mostly grounded in technical
applications. Only few academic endeavors strive to build a theoretical
framework to guide their propositions and predict future patterns of
behavior. The absence of proper theorization with respect to explaining
the current status of e-commerce development and predicting trends
reflects a gap in the literature that this book aims to fill.
Additionally, research papers and books discussing e-commerce in
developing regions mostly provide rationalization from the perspectives of
a single discipline, creating a need for an interdisciplinary approach.
Further, the academic study of the impact on regional investment and
financial activities is almost absent, and needs to be presented within
the scope of the contributions of e-commerce to national goals
achievement.
Target Audience
The book will fill an important void with respect to e-commerce and
regional development. While the book will be written with the academic and
professional readers in mind, the book should be of special significance
to regulators who are interested in increasing citizen welfare and aiding
national business entities in gaining competitive advantages. However, the
target audience is upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, along
with professional readers. The book aims at enriching the knowledge of
readers with diverse issues, theoretical backgrounds, and
professional/practical implications of e-commerce impact on regional
development. The envisioned aim of the target audience is the exploration
of new topics and establishing linkages between scientific findings and
professional interests. For example, graduate students who are
entrepreneurs, senior-level managers, and middle-level managers may be in
search of means for maximizing firm value and reaching wider a customer
base. Researchers seeking alternative explanations for the growth of
certain e-commerce applications and the impeded advance in others will
find diverse theoretical arguments and views from prior literature.

Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering
Workshop at the ICSE 2010
2nd May 2010, Cape Town, South Africa
www.itu.dk/people/ydi/CHASE2010.html
___________________________________
Software is created by groups —software engineers—working in varied
environments, under various conditions. Thus understanding cooperative
and human aspects of software development is crucial to comprehend how
methods and tools are used, and thereby improving the creation and
maintenance of software. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum
for discussing high quality research on human and cooperative aspects of
software engineering. We aim at providing both a meeting place for the
growing community and the possibility for researchers interested in
joining the field to present their work in progress and get an overview
over the field.
Inspired by the hosting country’s concept of co-responsibility – ubuntu
– we especially invite contributions that address community-based
development like open source development and sustainability of ICT
eco-systems.
Topics of Interest
==================
include, but are not limited to:
• Social and cultural aspects of software engineering,
• Psychological and cognitive aspects of software engineering,
• Managerial and organizational aspects of software engineering,
• Empirical studies of software development using both qualitative
and quantitative methods,
• Cooperation in agile development,
• Community based development processes like Open Source development,
• Software engineering as cooperative work,
• Coordination and mutual awareness in large scale software development,
• Cooperation between software developers and other professionals
over the lifetime of a system,
• Knowledge management in software engineering,
• Distributed software development.
• User participation in regard to ownership, training, level of
involvement, interplay with developers, sustainability and deployment
aspects
Submissions
===========
As last year, we will have 3 paper categories.
• Full papers (up to 8 pages)
• Short papers (up to 4 pages)
• Notes (1 page)
Papers that cannot be accommodated in the plenary sessions will be
presented in discussion round tables.
Important Dates
===============
• 22 January - deadline for workshop paper submission
• 14 February - notification of acceptance
• 3 March - camera-ready deadline for workshop papers
For further information see:
http://www.itu.dk/people/ydi/CHASE2010.html
Workshop goals
==============
The main goal of this workshop is to present current research and to
explore new research directions that will lead to improvements in the
creation and maintenance of software, from the perspective of both
processes and tools.
A secondary goal is to build and strengthen the community among the
researchers working on cooperative and human aspects of software
engineering, including those who typically attend ICSE and those who
hail from other disciplines. The goal is particularly to expand the
community in Africa.

*International Conference on*
*Information Technology in Bio- and Medical Informatics*
*ITBAM´10*
(Conference, Workshops, Poster Sessions)
in conjunction with the
21^st DEXA – DEXA’10
www.dexa.org
August 30 - September 3, 2010
Bilbao, Spain
*Scope of ITBAM Conference*
The area of Information Technology is very important for Bio- as well as
Medical Informatics.
The DEXA conference is dedicated to providing an international forum for
presenting applications in the area of database and expert systems,
enabling the exchange of ideas and experiences defining requirements for
future systems.
Referring to current applications, Bio- and Medical Information
Technology are areas confronting us with new challenges.
Both areas are characterized by producing mass data and by using
federated databases transparently integrating multiple autonomous
database systems into a single federated database
Further both areas are characterized by using different techniques
common in the area of information systems.
Generally speaking, for storing, manipulating and locating information
for particular questions within Bio- and Medical Informatics research
and application, many well known tools, methods and algorithms have to
be adopted or totally re-organized (in the sense of a new development)
for these very important scientific disciplines. All those modern
technologies like micro-arrays, high throughput mass-spectrometry,
high-resolution imaging, huge literature databases, complexity of
biological and medical databases (e.g. the human genome project provide
the sequence of the 3 billion DNA bases that constitute the human
genome), a huge amount of information to study biological systems like
cells, organs, or patients and many things more, are non trivial tasks
representing new challenges to transform the vast amount of biomedical
data into information supporting scientific progress and/or patient
management.
Scientists working in this area originate from different departments and
disciplines (informatics, mathematics, bioinformatics. biology,
medicine, etc.). Therefore the area of Information Technology of Bio-
and Medical Informatics is very heterogeneous. ITBAM should provide an
opportunity for fruitful discussion between researchers and
practitioners of different scientific disciplines for developing a
common language for solving problems within information technology
concerning bio and medical informatics together
*Scope of ITBAM Poster Session*
ITBAM poster sessions should show first ideas of non ready publications
and projects in progress within the area of information technology in
bio- and medical-informatics. Poster sessions are mainly addressed to
young researches like PhD students. All accepted posters will be shown
during the whole DEXA / ITBAM event.
ITBAM invites researchers from universities and labs of companies to
submit papers for the ITBAM conference, proposals for workshops and
proposals for poster sessions on all topics related to information
technology in Bio- and Medical Informatics including, but not limited to
those listed below:

Call for Book Chapter Proposals
---------------------------------
Community-Built Database: Research and Development
Edited by Eric Pardede (La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia)
To be published by Springer (www.springer.com)
in Information Science and Knowledge Management Series
(http://www.springer.com/series/6159)
Book Aims and Summary
-----------------------
Communities have built collections of information in collaborative
manners in the forms of encyclopaedias for centuries. More recently,
Wikipedia has demonstrated how collaborative efforts can be a powerful
feature to build a massive data storage. It is known that Wikipedia has
become a key part of many corporations' knowledge management systems
for decision making. Wikipedia is only one example brought about by Web
2.0 with the goal of creating communities of users.
While Web 2.0 has many benefits, there are many more opportunities to be
unleashed. Imagine if one could use information gathered by many people
for critical decision making. There is great potential for creating and
sharing more structured data through the web. To make it more regulated
and more realistic, the data will be limited to the community scale
rather than the global scale, for example, a community of academic
research group. Each community can create a large database, in which
each member can contribute information freely and can use the
information with higher levels of confidence.
The general motivation for the project is to enable various communities
to develop such databases. In more specific, this publication has the
following aims:
* To provide a comprehensive list of issues and challenges for research
in community-built database.
* To disseminate the latest developments on community-built databases
in various domains that can be used as a successful template to other
community-built database development project.
* To provide visionary ideas for future community-built database
research and application.
* To provide solid references on current research topics in
community-built database, that can be useful for literature survey
research.
Invitation for Proposals
--------------------------
We invite proposals from academic, researchers and industry
practitioners in the area of collaborative information systems,
databases, social web and other domains. The proposal should contain the
tentative title, authors details, and brief description on the chapter.
Tentative Sections
-----------------------
The book will consist of these following sections. Each of the sections
can include between 4 to 6 chapters.
Section I : Community-Built Databases: Standard and Technologies
Section II : Community-Built Databases: Storage and Modelling
Section III : Social Aspect of Community-Built Databases

Community-Built Database: Research and Development
Edited by Eric Pardede (La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia)
To be published by Springer (www.springer.com)
in Information Science and Knowledge Management Series
(http://www.springer.com/series/6159)
Book Aims and Summary
-----------------------
Communities have built collections of information in collaborative manners
in the forms of encyclopaedias for centuries. More recently, Wikipedia
has demonstrated how collaborative efforts can be a powerful feature to
build a massive data storage. It is known that Wikipedia has become a key
part of many corporations knowledge management systems for decision
making. Wikipedia is only one example brought about by Web 2.0 with the
goal of creating communities of users.
Each community can create a large database, in which each
member can contribute information freely and can use the information with
higher levels of confidence.
The general motivation for the project is to enable various communities to
develop such databases. In more specific, this publication has the
following aims:
* To provide a comprehensive list of issues and challenges for research
in community-built database.
* To disseminate the latest developments on community-built databases in
various domains that can be used as a successful template to other
community-built database development project.
* To provide visionary ideas for future community-built database research
and application.
* To provide solid references on current research topics in
community-built database, that can be useful for literature survey
research.
