Call for Participation: CSCW Research in Healthcare: Past, Present, and
Future
CSCW 2010 workshop
Savannah, Georgia, USA
Website: http://sites.google.com/site/cscwinhc/
Healthcare is among the most complex and highly collaborative domains of
work practice in the world. CSCW research has long been interested in
healthcare including examination of electronic medical records in
collaborative clinical settings, collaborative technologies in
healthcare, and the collaborative practices of patient care teams.
Through this research, we have gained a better understanding of the role
that collaboration plays in healthcare and the types of technologies
that can support collaboration among health care workers.
Although many prior CSCW studies and technologies have focused on
clinical and hospital settings, the changing nature of healthcare
delivery also opens a larger space for CSCW research. For instance, the
concept of individuals managing their own health information
independently through a Personal Health Record (PHR) raises new
questions about collaboration mediated over differing levels of
expertise and terminology, as well as across organizational boundaries
and professional disciplines.
In this workshop, we are interested in bringing together participants
who are addressing a wide range of conceptual and technical issues in
the healthcare domain to reflect on and address these issues.
SUBMISSIONS
We welcome submission from researchers and practitioners who are
interested in issues of collaboration, technology and healthcare. For
submission details, please see our workshop website
http://sites.google.com/site/cscwinhc/.
The workshop submission should be e-mailed to Dr. Madhu Reddy
(mreddy(a)ist.psu.edu) by 5 pm PST on Nov 20. If you have any questions
about the workshop or your submission, please contact Dr. Reddy. Since
the workshop will be highly interactive, the number of participants will
be strictly limited. So, if you are interested in participating, please
submit your workshop paper by the deadline.
Participants will also be encouraged to expand their workshop papers and
submit them for consideration to a special issue of the International
Journal of Medical Informatics on Collaboration in Healthcare Settings

Dear Colleague,
Let me kindly inform you that the CSEDU 2010, to be held in Valencia, Spain (7 - 10 April, 2010) is now welcoming the submission of position papers.
A position paper presents an arguable opinion about an issue. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that your opinion is valid and worth listening to, without the need to present completed research work and/or validated results. It is, nevertheless, important to support your argument with evidence to ensure the validity of your claims. A position paper may be a short report and discussion of ideas, facts, situations, methods, procedures or results of scientific research (bibliographic, experimental, theoretical, or other) focused on one of the conference topic areas. The acceptance of a position paper is restricted to the categories of "short paper" or "poster", i.e. a position paper is not a candidate to acceptance as "full paper".
Submitted papers will be subject to a double-blind review process. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, under an ISBN reference, on paper and CD-ROM support. The proceedings will be indexed by several major international indexers, including INSPEC, DBLP and we are awaiting the confirmation of indexation by EI and Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index.
All published papers will be also available at the INSTICC's Digital Library, which will be made available shortly.
Best paper awards will be distributed during the conference closing session.
The conference program will include a number of Keynote Lectures delivered by distinguished world-class researchers. Their names are announced at the conference website and available below.
Please check further details at the CSEDU 2010 conference web site (http://www.csedu.org). There you will find detailed information about the conference structure and its main topic areas. This conference is co-located with WEBIST 2010 (6th International Conference on Web Information System and Technologies - http://www.webist.org/).

Public Sector Reform Using Information Technologies:
Transforming Policy into Practice
A book edited by
Dr. Thanos Papadopoulos
School of Management, University of Southampton, UK
and
Dr. Panagiotis Kanellis
Ernst & Young and University of Athens, Greece
To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=729
Introduction
It is known that the successful delivery of public policy is increasingly
dependent upon the effective use and application of information technology
(IT) and systems. However, various issues are raised when policy
conceptualizations travel through the many and often labyrinthine levels
of public administration; the result of complex interplays between IT,
policy directives, and various organisational networks that are entailed
in the consequent implementation. These issues turn quickly into
insurmountable obstacles that stop any reform process in its tracks,
often, with both political and financial repercussions for all involved.
In situations like this governments are faced with hard choices of the
sort of either authoritatively enforcing the implementation of the policy
or abandoning any grandiose plans, returning back to a pen-and-paper mode
and the old ways of operations. Although those may satisfy hard-line
bureaucratic stakeholders, they do nothing to increase the level of
service offered to millions of citizens. Public sector reform using IT
creates unique opportunities, challenges and implications which are
imperative to be understood if they are to be successfully managed. This
calls for an analytical, interdisciplinary examination from both a
theoretical and practical perspective regarding policy execution and
materialization towards the electronic government and public sector of the
future.
Objective of the Book
This edited volume aims to provide the interested reader the prism needed
to approach the complexity of the issues involved from all the right
angles so as to formulate the necessary background of what is involved and
what is required when governments decide to transform public policy into
practice using IT and systems. It will investigate the underlying
theories and mechanisms, as well as the challenges, opportunities and
impact of reforms in any relevant application area, exploiting any
technological, social, cultural, organisational and human parameters.
Thus, collecting and presenting scholarly work, this single volume will
offer an essential and integrated body of knowledge, which will be
valuable for understanding IT-driven public sector reform.
Target Audience
The prospective audience for this book includes graduate students,
professors, and researchers, in several disciplines and fields, such as
computer science, information systems, and sociology, as well as
practitioners in policy formulation, implementation, and IT and systems
deployment. In this vein, the book intends to serve as a valuable asset
for academics in their research and teaching, as well as for
professionals, politicians and civil servants engaged in any form with
governments and the public sector, who strive to transform and enhance the
effectiveness and value of the services they provide so as to meet the
increasing expectations of citizens in modern democracies.
Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Case studies of IT-driven public sector reform
-Policies related to public sector reform through the utilisation of IT
-Public-private partnerships in the delivery of policies through the use
of IT
-Policy delivery evaluation frameworks and applications
-The interplay between technology and policy in the public sector
-Analysis of e-government applications such as e-voting and e-health
-Performance and effectiveness measurement of IT-enabled public sector
reform
-Organisational networks and knowledge management in the implementation of
IT-driven public sector reform

Special Issue on Knowledge Development and the Net Generation
(New deadline)
INTRODUCTION
Members of the Net Generation use the Web differently, they network
differently, and they learn differently. When they start at university,
traditional values on how to develop knowledge collide with their values.
Many of the teaching techniques that have worked for decades do not work
anymore because new students learn differently too. The Net Generation is
used to network; its members work collaboratively, they execute several
tasks simultaneously, and they use the Web to acquire knowledge.
We are in a period of transition and while many universities are starting
to embrace new ways of knowledge development in tandem with the Net
Generation, the general picture is that there is still a challenging path
ahead of us. We would like to know about these new experiences and offer
knowledge on how best to support knowledge development in universities
that are starting to fully engage with the Net generation.
To be able to meet new changing demands in higher education, this special
issue elaborates on the topic of how the Net Generation acquires and
exchanges knowledge. We welcome research using a socio-technical approach
that demonstrates how the Web can be used in higher education to
facilitate students knowledge development.
Contributing papers may deal with any combination of the following issues
and areas, but are not limited to them:
- Social networking and its impact on emerging, new learning
infrastructures
- Social networking and its integration into existing learning
infrastructures
- Social networking vs. traditional study groups
- Challenges for socio-technological change at the university level
- Technological-driven impacts on society or organizations after/during
studies
- Outlook: Tools for knowledge development in the post-Net Generation era
We are interested in papers from all over the world that are both
conceptually and empirically based. In terms of conceptual papers and
theoretical frameworks, we seek to contribute to theory building by both
re-applying existing frameworks and developing new constructs that help
explaining socio-technological knowledge development through using modern
information and communication technology. In terms of empirical data, we
seek papers that report, for example, on experiences from using networking
tools or new learning infrastructures to impart knowledge to students in
higher education.
ABOUT THE JOURNAL
The International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development
publishes papers that offer a detailed analysis and discussion on
socio-technical philosophy and practices which underpin successful
organizational change thus building a more promising future for todays
societies and organizations. It encourages interdisciplinary texts that
discuss current practices as well as demonstrate how the advances ofand
changes withintechnology affect the growth of society, and vice versa.
The aim of the journal is to bring together the expertise of people who
have worked practically in a changing society across the world for people
in the field of organizational development and technology studies
including information systems development and implementation.

Special Session on Engineering Knowledge and Semantic Systems (IWEKSS)
The 23rd International Conference on Industrial, Engineering & Other
Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA-AIE 2010) June 1-4,
2010, Cordoba, Spain
http://www.iea-aie2010.org/
Scope of the Session
There have been many kinds of knowledge-based and ontology-based
applications to support domain-specific knowledge modeling and the
semantic dimension of information systems. Its emerging environment is
characterised by intensive collaboration, cooperation and knowledge
processing activities with formation of complex social and economical
networks in the background. Various knowledge processing techniques are
being used to address data portability and Web information discovery
problems. More particularly, it is very important to investigate how to
make the systems (e.g., networked organizations, organizational networks,
and in distributed knowledge management) more practical. Modelling the
dynamics and evolution of such complex systems, involving knowledge
processing with intelligent information agents acting on behalf of
thousands of users, is a new and promising research area with many
practical applications.
The aim of this invited session is to bring together researchers and
practitioners in areas of knowledge and intelligence, semantics, agents
and grid computing to share their visions, research achievements and
solutions, to resolve the challenge issues and to establish worldwide
cooperative research and development. This will give an opportunity to
push further the discussion upon the potential of knowledge and semantic
systems across many communities.
Topics of interests
- Ontology mapping and merging
- Context and ontologies
- Semantic social networks
- Collaborative tagging on Web 2.0
- Semantic and knowledge grids
- Applications and case studies

*************************************************************
IADIS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION SYSTEMS 2010
March 18-20, 2010 – Porto, Portugal
(http://www.is-conf.org/)
*************************************************************
* Conference background and goals
A new paradigm is sweeping the society, organisations and the business
environment. In fact, society and business world alike are moving from
its tangible bases to intangible ones based on knowledge and information
systems (IS) to support its management, use and sharing. In this
emerging paradigm, terms like information, communication, knowledge, and
learning have acquired a critical relevance to the understanding of the
nature of contemporary business. This led authors such as Drucker (1993)
to state that “we are entering the knowledge society in which the basic
economic resource… is knowledge”.
In fact, since the mid-1980s, there has been a sudden avalanche of a new
kind of vocabulary. Corporations, which so far had been economic
entities, are being described as ‘information-based organizations’,
‘learning organizations’, ‘knowledge-creating companies’ or knowledge
intensive organisations. Instead of product-market strategies, the
fashionable business discourse invokes core competencies, intangible
assets, knowledge-based capabilities, intellectual capital, knowledge
management etc. Consequently, in this 21st century of ours, terms such
as intellectual capital, knowledge management, and knowledge mapping
have increasingly become part of the corporate landscape.
However, none of this apparent revolution would be possible without the
underlying technological support provided by IS. The IADIS Information
Systems Conference (IS 2010) aims to provide a forum for the discussion
of IS taking a socio-technological perspective. It aims to address the
issues related to design, development and use of IS in organisations
from a socio-technological perspective, as well as to discuss IS
professional practice, research and teaching.
* Format of the Conference
The conference will comprise invited talks and oral presentations. The
proceedings of the conference will be published in the form of a book.
The best paper authors will be invited to publish extended versions of
their papers in specific journals, and in the IADIS International
Journal on Computer Science and Information Systems.
