Cancun, Mexico. Information systems (IS) educators face a number of challenges in the current environment, including dealing with declining enrolments, preparing students for the changes in the profession and updating curriculum to integrate new ideas and technologies. These challenges make sharing IS education-related knowledge and practices especially critical. This track provides an opportunity for IS educators and researchers to exchange ideas, techniques, and applications through a combination of workshops, panels and paper presentations. In constantly changing times full of technological disruption, much of our focus is on innovation, disruptive technologies, and quality advances in IS and MIS instruction and curriculum. Different submission topics are welcome, ranging from papers aimed at improving the teaching of specific courses to “big picture” papers intended to address broad topics. Submissions using information systems technology to advance education in other disciplines are also welcome. To succeed in this highly competitive and dynamic environment, organizations must unfold the potential of advanced digital technologies in their business strategies, transform their work routines, processes and structures, rethink their business models, as well as manage and govern IT infrastructures that are central to their value propositions (Legner et al. 2017). In short, pervasive digitalization has increased the importance of information technology (IT) and transformed the demands placed on organizations’ IT functions. Besides ensuring regular IT operations, IT functions are increasingly required to proactively identify technological innovations and to rapidly transfer them into marketable solutions – and with that to directly contribute to their organization’s value proposition (Urbach et al. 2017). In this context, IS strategizing and governance represent key activities for the effective deployment of IT resources and ultimately for value creation through IT. The emergence of new digital technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence [AI], big-data analytics, blockchain, cloud computing) and infrastructures (e.g., digital platforms and ecosystems), novel value-creation processes and work practices (e.g., IT consumerization, human-robot collaboration, resource sharing) along with the availability of unprecedented data volumes challenge existing conceptualizations and theories related to IS strategy and governance (Markus 2017; Newell & Marabelli 2015). For instance, while cloud services may make the IT artefact seemingly disappear, the challenge of governing the design and use of such services and associated IT resources has become even more acute (Schneider & Sunyaev 2016). Digital business models and gig economy platforms that revolve around resource sharing and/or complex product-service offerings not only challenge organizational boundaries, but also established ideas about ownership of resources, tasks, and outputs (Schor 2014). Similarly, while AI-based algorithms can automate business processes, they also highlight the need for data and process governance (Tarafdar et al. 2017). At the same time, in organizations where more ‘traditional’ technologies and work arrangements are still dominant, IS strategy and governance challenges remain highly complex and important (Wiener et al. 2016). The objectives of the proposed track are two-fold. First, from a scholarly research perspective, the objective is to foster and promote novel concepts and theories on IS strategy and governance, with a particular focus on the manifold opportunities and challenges associated with the pervasive digitalization of business and society. Second, the track aims at offering insights that enable IS practitioners to leverage emerging digital technologies, to respond to digitalization challenges, and ultimately, to make effective use of available IT resources. The track is open to all types of contributions — including research in progress — studying IS strategy and governance topics from different stakeholder perspectives, in different contexts and settings (e.g., for-profits and non-profits), at different levels of analysis (e.g., individual, project, program, corporate, network, ecosystem, and societal level), and with different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches (e.g., conceptual and empirical studies). We particularly welcome studies that address the conference theme “Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity in a Digitizing World” by relating IS strategy and governance topics to social challenges and opportunities emerging from the digital era. As an emerging practice and research field it is quite wide and explorative. We can apply several perspectives and layers on a smart area, but a common ground contains phenomena like efficient use of assets and resources to improve the social, economic, and environmental well-being of those who live, work, or travel within the city. Management and control of data and infrastructures are also important together with stakeholders, citizen participation. The word smart serves as an umbrella concept for different digital artefacts such as sensors, networks, Artificial Intelligence, and different applications of Internet-of-things. Connectivity and interconnectedness are other themes in the smart city research and practice, that raise several questions from an information systems (IS) perspective. The purpose of this call is to invite IS researchers to elaborate on the smart city phenomenon from a range of different perspectives in order to show the different dimensions of the phenomenon, but also to stimulate research trying to frame the area more thoroughly and reflect upon the emerging empirical phenomena and different empirical applications of a smart city. There is also room for a discussion on the conceptual and contextual dimensions of a smart city, how does context matter? How can we develop and elaborate on a Scandinavian perspective on smart cities? How do we address participation and involvement in a smart city context? Explore critical studies of smart cities and investigate the dark sides of a smart city? How do we handle dimensions of integrity, privacy and security as well as ethical issues within the smart city domain, and at the same time keep a proactive use of digitalization? Are there any preferred sets of values that are realized in the practice of smart cities today? From its roots in the studies of the IT workforce, CPR has broadened its focus to investigate all aspects of this important and complex relationship. We are delighted to welcome the 2020 ACM SIGMIS CPR conference to Nuremberg, Germany, in June 2020. Early implementations of information systems were designed to automate administrative and transactional work by utilizing large enterprise systems. Now digital technologies are ubiquitous; influencing every aspect of society, work, and life. Societies, organizations, and individuals now face many new dilemmas, new questions, and new uncertainties. As digital technologies infuse and shape our daily lives, many of our core theoretical perspectives are derived from a time when computers were new and unknown to many organizations and people. The context of digital innovations provides CPR research opportunities to develop new theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. Such approaches may require novel concepts, models, and methods to understand how societies, organizations, and individuals apply, share, adopt and are impacted by digital innovation to build a digital future. Hence, there is a need for research at the intersection of societies, organizations, and individuals as well as the people being in charge of the digital innovation process and those who are educating the digital creators and leaders of the future. Therefore, the CPR 2020 conference seeks papers addressing, but not limited to the following questions: Individual * What leads to individuals adopting or resisting the use of digital innovations? * What are the impacts of emerging technologies on individuals? * How does the design of a digital innovation impact acceptance and/or resistance? * How do individual humans interact with robotic co-workers or services? Organizational * How can organizations understand emerging technologies and their potential risks and opportunities? * How can organizations enable incremental and disruptive digital innovation? * What is the business value of digital innovations? From what does this value derive? * Will emerging IT enable new organizational forms? What are those forms? * How does the interaction of IT and people impact innovation, and how is innovation impacted by this interaction? * How does IT impact entrepreneurial activities? Societal * How does and will digital innovation impact the nature of work? * How can we address various digital divides? Workforce * What are the best ways to organize IT work to enable digital innovation? * What factors impact retention and turnover in the IT workforce? * What unique challenges exist for managing IT workers, and how do we meet those challenges? * Why are some demographic groups under-represented in the IT workforce? * What are the characteristics of the IT workforce? How are these characteristics changing? * What are the key skills for entry into the IT workforce? How are these skills changing? * What ethical issues result from embedding IT in work? * What security and privacy issues result from embedding IT in work? Education * How do we help students develop the skills needed for entry into, and success in the IT workforce and digital innovation? * How can we attract promising students to IS programs? * How should IS programs deal with emerging technologies and digital innovation? * How should IS programs differentiate themselves from computer science, analytics, data science and other overlapping programs with regard to digital innovation? * How can universities best prepare students for careers in IS and IT? In addition to the conference theme, we also invite submissions to a general IS track that broadly addresses issues at the intersection of information technology and people. Format of Submissions ACM SIGMIS CPR 2020 welcomes both completed papers and research-in-progress papers, (which may be accepted as posters), and submissions designated as posters. All papers must be original, unpublished elsewhere, and submitted on the ACM SIG proceedings template available for download from: https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template-16dec2016. All reviewing will be double-blind. * Completed papers may include conceptual papers, empirical papers and industry case studies. They must not exceed 5000 words including all text, figures, and tables. The abstract, keywords, and references are excluded from this page count. * Research-in-progress papers must not exceed 2000 words including all text, figures, and tables. The abstract, keywords, and references are excluded from this page count. * Poster presentations must not exceed 500 words and should provide a comprehensive overview of the topic, research approach, findings to date (if any) and future plans for project. * Panels: Ideas for interesting panels related to the conference theme should be submitted directly to Sven Laumer (sven.laumer(a)fau.de<mailto:sven.laumer@fau.de>). Doctoral Consortium A doctoral consortium will take place as in previous years in conjunction with the CPR 2020 conference. It is meant for students spanning those at an early stage in their doctoral program to those who are more advanced and are at the stage of writing their dissertation proposal, and who are conducting research on a topic related to the conference theme or to the broad focus of the CPR conference on understanding issues pertaining to the intersection of information technology and people. The purpose of the consortium is two-fold: 1) provide feedback and guidance to students on their proposal while at a stage where feedback can be considered for future dissertation work 2) provide mentoring and networking opportunities to students who wish to pursue careers as researchers at the intersection of information systems and people. Doctoral students must be nominated to the consortium by a faculty sponsor. Students nominated for the consortium should submit via email (sigmisacm(a)gmail.com<mailto:sigmisacm@gmail.com>) a 10-page research proposal (including all text, figures, and references; double space to be reviewed by a panel of highly qualified senior faculty mentors. The doctoral students selected to participate in the doctoral consortium will receive one round of written feedback on their proposal. At the conference, each student will have 15-20 minutes to present their research ideas and receive feedback in-person from experienced researchers and fellow consortium participants. The doctoral consortium will allow activities in plenary mode and intense workshop sessions in smaller groups. The submission deadline for doctoral consortium application is the same as the general submission deadline. Accepted students may choose to publish the full proposal that was submitted for evaluation or an extended abstract of their proposal in the conference proceedings. Funding will be available to assist with travel and registration fees to students selected for the doctoral consortium. Proceedings Accepted papers will be published by ACM in the refereed conference proceedings, which will be distributed at the conference. Authors of accepted papers may choose to publish complete papers or extended abstracts of their research in the conference proceedings. All completed research papers that are to be published in their entirety in the conference proceedings will be considered for the Magid Igbaria Outstanding Conference Paper of the Year Award. The Magid Igbaria Outstanding Conference Paper and other exemplar papers will be invited for publication in the DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems-the quarterly journal publication of ACM SIGMIS. Articles will not be published in the event proceedings if at least one author of a submitted work is unable to present their article at the conference. AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks prior to the first day of your conference. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work. (For those rare conferences whose proceedings are published in the ACM Digital Library after the conference is over, the official publication date remains the first day of the conference.) Proceedings of all previous CPR conferences are available in the ACM Digital Library at http://portal.acm.org/dl.cfm. Conference Location Nuremberg is an early center of humanism and science. For example, the city contributed much to the science of astronomy. In 1471 an astronomical observatory was built in Nuremberg, in 1515, Albrecht Dürer, a native of Nuremberg, created woodcuts of the first maps of the stars of the northern and southern hemispheres and the main part of Nicolaus Copernicus's work was published in Nuremberg in 1543. Moreover, sculptors such as Veit Stoss, Adam Kraft and Peter Vischer are also associated with Nuremberg. Richard Wagner made Nuremburg's most famous native, Hans Sachs, the hero of his opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The first documented mention of the city was in 1050, noting Nuremberg as the location of an Imperial castle, which is still today one of the main tourist attraction. Beyond its main attractions, there are 54 different museums for arts and culture, history, science and technology, toys, family and children, where visitors can see the world's oldest globe (built in 1492), a 500-year-old Madonna, and Renaissance-era German art. After World War II, the town was rebuilt with the charm of a medieval Bavarian village. It has since been dubbed the "most German of German cities". Nuremberg is also famous for its Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas market), which draws well over a million shoppers each year. The market is famous for its handmade ornaments and delicacies, which can also be bought in the summer. Nuremberg held great significance during the Nazi Germany era. The Nazi Party chose the city to be the site of huge Nazi Party conventions - the Nuremberg rallies. Therefore, the city provided the site for the Nuremberg trials, which held to account many major Nazi officials. Both sites can still be visited and there is a visitors center that explains Nurembergs role during Nazi Germany. There are many institutions of higher education in the city, most notably the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), with 39,780 students (2017) Bavaria's third and Germany's 11th largest university with campuses in Erlangen and Nuremberg and a university hospital in Erlangen (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen). FAU is Germany's most innovative university and 2nd in Europe. Nuremberg is also a destination for food lovers. Culinary tourists can taste the city's famous lebkuchen, gingerbread, local beer, and Nürnberger Rostbratwürstchen, or Nuremberg sausages. The social event of the conference will provide an opportunity to taste typical local food. Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen Nürnberg "Albrecht Dürer") is the second-busiest airport of Bavaria after Munich Airport, and the tenth-busiest airport of Germany. While the datafication can help the drive towards a sustainable and inclusive future enabling Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity in a Digitizing World, the use of data can also lead to threats to our freedoms, to fairness, and to community. Consequently, ethical consideration in novel and advanced approaches for collecting, storing, managing, and analyzing data are required and challenge practitioners and academia as more and more data (big data) becomes available. This trend, as well as digitalization in general, fosters the assimilation and further development of business intelligence and business analytics approaches within organizations and across various industries. In addition, governments and non-profit organizations can benefit from new opportunities raised by analytical applications and technologies. Many scholars are now emphasizing the importance of business analytics and big data approaches as well as information assets for efficient and effective decision support, management, and leadership. Business analytics is essential for an organization’s daily business, directly influencing firm performance and business development in a global world. The application of business analytics and big data approaches enables us to integrate, analyze, visualize, and ultimately understand and improve the complex processes that make up our digitized world. Such approaches are enablers for knowledge discovery benefitting societies, organizations, and individuals leading to smart technologies. Improved communication, more sustainable processes, as well as new business models are examples for the innovative use of disparate data sources (such as mobile, the Internet of Things, streaming data or social media data). Furthermore, the availability of seemingly endless computing and cheaper storage capabilities available through cloud computing enables new opportunities in providing a global gateway to information as a service. Over the past few years, there has much enthusiasm around business analytics as organizations explore how they can leverage their data to create and maintain a competitive advantage. As such, today’s companies try to collect and process as much data as possible, with the aim of improving their decision-making processes. Nevertheless, while there is some empirical evidence that business analytics can create value, the thesis that it leads to performance gains requires deeper analysis. To date, there is limited understanding of how organizations need to change to embrace these technological innovations, and the business shifts they entail. As big data tools and applications diffuse into the organizational fabric, they will inevitably change long-standing ideas about decision making, management practices, and most importantly competitive strategy formulation. Motivated by the explosion of interest in these emerging fields, the present track aims to promote multidisciplinary contributions dealing with socio-economic, organizational, technological, cultural, and societal perspectives. Furthermore, outcomes that demonstrate critical success factors on the organizational impact of business analytics and big data in terms of competitive performance, innovativeness, increased agility, and market capitalizing competence are encouraged. We welcome submissions based on quantitative and qualitative work, theoretical research, design research, action research, or behavioral research. We are especially interested in papers that discuss and expand our understanding of how digital technologies are influencing and impacting fundamental human values, whether at the individual, the organization and/or the societal level.
