2018 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS)
New Orleans, LA, August 16-18, 2018, http://amcis2018.aisnet.org/
IT Entrepreneurship Mini-Track CALL FOR PAPERS
IT Entrepreneurship is a broad set of topics that includes the creation
of new digital products and services, and the companies that deliver
them. IT entrepreneurial activities are highly sought after by regions,
institutions, and governments throughout the world. New forms of
IT-based entrepreneurship can be a force for opportunity and
inclusiveness, offering the possibility of high wages and ‘green’
economic development, but might also exacerbate skill gaps and unequal
access to information and other resources.
The IT Entrepreneurship mini-track welcomes submissions from a variety
of research perspectives (e.g. positivist, interpretivist, or critical)
and data gathering and analysis approaches (e.g. from experiments and
surveys, to grounded theory and Delphi studies). We welcome research at
all levels of analysis—industry, society, product, workgroup or
individual. Presentations at the mini-track are intended to be
developmental, in keeping with the historic culture and spirit of the
sponsoring group, ACM SIGMIS (Special Interest Group on Management
Information Systems).
This mini-track is part of a broader initiative by ACM SIGMIS to provide
support, resources, community and infrastructure to researchers
considering the broad area of IT entrepreneurship. The group will also
support a track/workshop at the annual SIGMIS-CPR conference in June
2018. The intention is for high-quality papers from this initiative to
be packaged as a special issue of the DATA BASE journal.
Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to:
• How is IT entrepreneurship new? What differentiates digital
entrepreneurship from entrepreneurship in general?
• What can IT entrepreneurs learn from the accumulation of knowledge
in existing entrepreneurship and information systems research?
• Are there processes that aid individuals at the various stages of
becoming an IT entrepreneur (e.g. decision to start a business,
planning, start up, rounds of funding, moving toward success, decision
to quit IT entrepreneurship)?
• Are there processes for creating and promoting new IT products and
processes that increase efficiency, effectiveness, and/or outcomes?
• What processes for communities and entrepreneurs will encourage new
product creation as a force for a more inclusive and productive society?
• How can IT help entrepreneurial organizations become more effective?
• What opportunities and challenges exist for IT entrepreneurs in
particular industries such as health care, energy and the environment,
supply chain and logistics, etc.?
• How do new digital platforms and business models, such as
e-commerce, social media and the “sharing economy”, create new
opportunities or pitfalls for potential entrepreneurs?
• What are the implications of the growth of IT entrepreneurship for
IS education?

*Overview*
-----------------------------------------------------------
Today, it is a true challenge to design applications that support users
of technology in complex and emergent organizational and work contexts.
To meet this challenge, the Working Group 13.6 (WG13.6) on Human Work
Interaction Design (HWID) was established in September 2005 as the sixth
working group under the International Federation for Information
Processing specifically the Technical Committee 13 on Human Computer
Interaction (HCI). A main objective of the WG13.6 as defined in 2012 is
the analysis of this complexity and its relationships between extensive
empirical work domains studies and HCI designs.
We are particularly interested in observing technology-mediated
innovative work practices in informal settings, in a social development
context. This is why WG 13.6 has decided to promote research jointly
with WG. 13.8 on Interaction Design in International Development, whose
main interest since its creation in 2006 is to promote the application
of interaction design to address the needs, desires and aspirations of
people across the developing world.
Today’s technologies change the way we work with pervasive interfaces
and smart places, often shifting our physical boundaries and our
operational modes. From health care, to traffic control, interaction
with new technologies, researchers have raised challenging issues for
HCI researchers and experts. This is even more challenging when one is
away from the mainstream industrial sites of the global north.
In line with recent suggestions that HCI should “turn to practice” and
do practice based research, the utility and merit of defining a field
from its published works stems from providing a conceptual frame to
organize a variety of issues emerging in recent HCI research. In this
focus section, we take a practice oriented, bottom up approach where one
can analyze and synthesize relevant field work. Stephanidis states that
interactive technologies are entering all aspects of everyday life, in
communication, work and collaboration, health and well-being, home
control and automation, public services, learning and education,
culture, travel, tourism and leisure, and many others. An extensive
variety of technologies are already available, and new ones tend to
appear frequently, and on a regular basis. Because of this we have to be
attentive towards the development of studies that will help the growth
of new technologies itself.
This focus section also aims at analysing the connections between
ecological interface design with other common interface design methods,
enabling participants to better understand how to combine approaches in
the creation of design solutions. We propose to approach this in the
perspective of transforming everyday interactions of people with
technologies, in particular cognitive work approaches, using examples
and case studies. Examples of everyday services and technologies that
are already enabled by multiple cognitive engineering approaches include
Amazon’s Echo, IBM’s Watson, Apple’s Siri, services like Dropbox,
Spotify, Pinterest and so many others.
-----------------------------------------------------------
*Topics of Interest*
-----------------------------------------------------------
In the above context, this focus section of IxD&A invites papers around
the following list of topics:
• human-centered design approaches for specific work domains
(workplaces, smart workplaces);
• visions of new roles for workplaces that enhance both work practice
and interaction design.
• can HWID be effectively applied beyond control rooms and other
industrial or manufacturing contexts?
• analyzing the value of the current state of affairs with regard to the
concept of “affordance”;
• how does HWID can help improve the experience economy, the knowledge
economy (Web 2.0, user-generated content) and the transformation economy
(ethical value change, global and societal issues);
• case studies of applied HWID leveraging on pervasive computing,
Internet of Things, and other work domains or workplace technologies.

August 16-18, 2018, New Orleans, LA, USA
Paper submission deadline: February 28, 2018
http://amcis2018.aisnet.org
Mini-Track Title: Business Intelligence and Analytics Case Studies
Track: Data Science and Analytics for Decision Support (SIGDSA)
Mini-Track Chairs: Jerry Fjermestad (jerry(a)njit.edu) Stephan Kudbya, Ken
Lawrence
Aims and Objectives
The availability of data is driving organizations to store, organize, and
analyze information to make better decisions. What types of decisions are
being made and with what tools? Organizations need proper information in
the right form at the right time. Business intelligence and analytics are
the tools that organizations can use. How are they justified, used and
implemented?
The theme of this special issue highlights the need for conceptualization
and empirical study of the implications of the roll of business
intelligence and analytics within organizational structures. For this
special issue, we call for high quality research studies from academia,
industry, governments, and non-profits, especially collaborations among
these groups, to address the benefits, justifications, implementation and
use of BI analytics applications in a case study approach.
Topics including various elements of analytics such as
descriptive/retrospective, predictive and prescriptive applications along
with IT based reporting mechanisms that provide actionable information to
stakeholders in an organization (e.g. dashboards, interactive reports,
visualizations, etc). Case studies incorporating streaming, real-time
initiatives and approaches leveraging structured and unstructured data
sources are welcomed. Case study submissions should go beyond a pure data
and technology focus and extend the scope to include describing the
information creation process (e.g. deciding data sources to be used to
create most effective BI for decision support) and potentially mechanisms
for monitoring effectiveness for BI users.
The papers included in this mini0track could include, but not limited, to
the following areas:
· Emerging Trends in Business Intelligence and Business Analytics
· The move to mobile BI

The Second International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2018)
http://sara.unisalento.it/~cafaro/WPDM2018/
CALL FOR PAPERS
As part of The 18th International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2018), http://www.iccsa.org
July 2 - 5 2018, Melbourne, Australia
Submission Deadline: January 28, 2018
SPECIAL ISSUE
Selected extended versions of workshop papers will be invited to a Special Issue to appear in the Algorithms journal (see http://www.mdpi.com/journal/algorithms/special_issues/Parallel_Distributed_…)
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining is an international forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling novel applications. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in high-performance data mining algorithms and applications, and related topics.
The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Parallel data mining algorithms using MPI and/or OpenMP
- Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators
- Parallel data mining applications exploiting FPGA
- Distributed data mining algorithms
- Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining applications

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Join us on July 18-20, 2018 for the 9th annual International Conference on
Social Media and Society (#SMSociety). The conference is an
interdisciplinary gathering of social media researchers, practitioners, and
analysts from around the world. The 2018 conference is hosted by the Centre
for Business Data Analytics at the Copenhagen Business School.
In 2012, in the wake of Occupy and the Arab Spring, the #SMSociety community
explored networked influence and virality, and saw social media and viral
events as a democratizing force. Fast forward five years and we find
ourselves in quite a different, some would argue, darker social media
landscape where those same democratizing forces are now being exploited in
ways we could not foresee. With the rapid change on social media platforms
and their affordances, the heightened emphasis on mobile and visual
communication, the rise of bots, and the increased participation of state
actors, we believe it is time to revisit the ideas of Networked Influence
and Virality once more!
Powered by networked influence and made possible by privately owned social
media platforms, we are said to be in a sharing economy. We are now owning
less and sharing more, giving and receiving crowdsourced content, adapting,
innovating, remaking, and re-sharing original and remixed materials. New
attitudes, practices, and legal precedents about ownership, rights, and
information evaluation are emerging with the growing use of social media.
The joys of sharing and connecting through social media-as amateur music
videos inspire responses and the sharing of cute animal videos brings joy to
millions-are tempered with concerns about the manipulation and exploitation
of social media platforms. Hateful, anti-social speech, coordinated
misinformation campaigns (i.e. "fake news") and "false flag" operation by
actors unknown now dominate the news cycle and compete for an opportunity to
"go viral."
Considering the rapid changes in social media environments, use, and users,
the conference organizers invite scholarly and original submissions that
relate to the 2018 theme of "Networked Influence and Virality." We welcome
both quantitative and qualitative work which crosses interdisciplinary
boundaries and expands our understanding of the current and future trends in
social media research, especially those that explore some of the questions
and issues raised below:
* How do ideas spread online? What are the outcomes of the viral
spread of news, memes, content, and creative production?
* Who are the new influencers and power players in the information
landscape of social media?
* How important are bots in this landscape? How do bots act as social
actors? In what ways are they transforming social media?
* Algorithmic filtering is now the norm on all major social media
platforms; how has their implementation changed the user experience?
* What are the impacts of misinformation and propaganda on elections,
commerce, and the attention economy?
* Is faster, frictionless communication still an ideal to strive for
or have we gone too far? Do we need to reintroduce some frictions back to
social media platforms?
* How do corporate interests, activities, sales, and profit
motivations drive or otherwise affect sharing practices?
* What are the characteristics of contemporary social media practices
that drive the need for new laws, sharing conventions, censorship, rights to
be heard and to be forgotten?
* Do social media users understand, or are they even aware of, the
ethical considerations related to sharing, and re-mixing content on social
media?
* How do users evaluate information received through social media?
* How does viral culture affect policy, power dynamics, corporations,
activists, and personal interests?
* What new methodologies, tools, and frameworks can researchers bring
to bear in studying the flow of information on social media?
* How do sharing, memes, and viral events contribute to
theory-building about our society?
>From its inception, the International Conference on Social Media & Society
Conference (#SMSociety) has focused on the best practices for studying the
impact and implications of social media on society. Our invited academic and
industry keynotes have highlighted the shifting questions and concerns for
the social media research community. From introducing media multiplexity and
networked individualism with Caroline Haythornthwaite and Barry Wellman in
2010 and 2011, to measuring influence with Gilad Lotan and Sharad Goel in
2012 and 2013, to defining social media research as a field with Keith
Hampton in 2014, to identifying our commitments as social media researchers
in policy making with Bill Dutton in 2015, to exploring the future of social
media technologies with John Weigelt in 2015, to highlighting the challenges
of social media data mining in the context of big data with Susan Halford
and Helen Kennedy in 2016; and more recently discussing the dark side of
social media with Lee Rainie and Ron Deibert in 2017.
Organized by the Social Media Lab <http://socialmedialab.ca/> at Ted Rogers
School of Management at Ryerson University, the conference provides
participants with opportunities to exchange ideas, present original
research, learn about recent and ongoing studies, and network with peers.
The conference's intensive three-day program features workshops, full
papers, work-in-progress papers, panels, and posters. The wide-ranging
topics in social media showcase research from scholars working in many
fields including Communication, Computer Science, Education, Journalism,
Information Science, Management, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work,
etc. <http://socialmediaandsociety.org/submit/>
