LESS 2013 - Lean Enterprise Software and Systems Conference
Galway, Ireland
1st - 4th December, 2013
www.less2013.org
CALL FOR PAPERS
The 4th International Conference on Lean Enterprise Software and Systems
(LESS2013) will be hosted by the National University of Ireland Galway on
the west coast of Ireland. The conference brings together both industrial
practitioners and researchers in the fields of information systems and
software engineering, and focuses specifically on theory, practical
applications and implications of agile and lean development methods. LESS
joins three strong communities to form a platform for innovative ideas and
future developments. We foster the interaction between the lean product
development community and the agile community, coupled with innovative ideas
nurtured by the Beyond Budgeting School of thinking.
The LESS 2013 conference will have five key tracks:
(i) Enterprise Transformation: This track examines a broad range of emerging
issues concerning transformation of how business is conducted in order to
help cope with shifts in environments.
(ii) Lean Startups: Lean Startup is an approach for launching businesses and
products that relies on validated learning, scientific experimentation, and
iterative product releases to shorten product development cycles, measure
progress, and gain valuable customer feedback. In this way, companies,
especially startups, can design their products or services to meet the
demands of their customer base without requiring large amounts of initial
funding or expensive product launches
(iii) Lean & Agile Project & Portfolio Management: This track examines
emerging issues in the area of agile and lean methods. Papers are also
welcome on the application of these methods in project portfolios.
(iv) Scaling Software: Software is increasingly scaling in importance in
companies in different industry sectors who would not have traditionally
seen themselves as primarily software companies. As a consequence, software
development environments need to scale in various dimensions, e.g.,
Processes and Methods; Products, Systems and Services; Organization and
Business Domains.
(v) Beyond Budgeting: Because the world changes constantly, companies, not
just projects, must adapt to the new conditions as innovation comes in many
forms. Beyond Budgeting started as a learning journey for management
communities in Europe and is now a major active movement seeking a different
approach to the management of organisations.
You are invited to submit original papers addressing contemporary issues
emerging in the specific or intersections among the proposed areas. Papers
for sessions that fit any of these tracks are welcome, and we are constantly
looking for new ideas to promote and review in the community. Novelty and
applicability are important factors in the choice of sessions for the
conference. LESS is a conference at the intersection of different ideas and
trends.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- Agile/Lean software development
- Complexity Thinking, Complexity Science and Complex Adaptive Systems in
the context of Agile and Lean
- Case studies of agile-lean
- Lean principles and values
- Kanban cases
- Lean education
- Agile enterprise
- Beyond Budgeting studies
- Control in agile/lean environments
- Scaling agile/lean development
- Combining or streamlining business processes and agile/lean development
We encourage a range of submissions including:
Full research papers. Research papers are limited to 15 pages. Accepted
completed research papers will be presented at LESS2013 and published in the
LESS2013 proceedings.
Research-in-progress submissions are papers developed from promising but
incomplete research projects that will benefit from feedback of other LESS
participants. Research-in-progress papers are limited to 8 pages in length.
Accepted research in progress papers will be presented as posters at
LESS2013 and published in the LESS2013 proceedings.
Experience reports and demonstrations with a focus on presentations and
interactive sessions, experience report presentations or hands-on
engineering sessions. We are looking for lightning talks (10min),
presentations (60 or 90min) and interactive sessions (90min) related to any
of the conference themes. Please specify in your proposal: the title as it
should appear in the program, an abstract of 200 words or less, the
organizers (include a short 100 word bio), the theme covered, the format
(including duration), a justification for being included and the proposed
length (10min/60min/90min).
Workshops and tutorials for interesting and innovative half-day and full-day
experiences based on established material or interactive formats. We invite
research, technical papers, and work-in-progress investigating cases and
business models enabled by various technologies and developed in different
countries. Please specify in your proposal: the title of the
workshop/tutorial, an abstract of 200 words or less, the organizers (include
a short 100 word bio), the theme covered, the format (including duration)
and a justification for being included.
Ph.D. symposium inviting Ph.D. students to present their research.
Participants will be asked to prepare a presentation including a discussion
of the main research challenges, solution directions, results obtained thus
far, evaluation plan, and research plan towards the completion of the Ph.D.
Presentation should be limited to twenty minutes. An expert panel will
provide feedback to help students shape their work.
Panel proposals should be submitted to the track chairs. We invite proposals
that provide a forum to present, explore and debate timely proactive topics
and emergent trends. Panel sessions should complement the program by
allowing for the discussion of emerging issues as well as new research
ideas. In a panel proposal, submit the title and a 500-word description.
Papers must present new research not currently under review elsewhere. All
submissions are subject to a thorough peer-review process. At least one
author per paper is required to register upon acceptance. The LESS2013
conference proceedings will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in
Business Information processing (LNBIP). We are also discussing a special
issue of the Journal of Enterprise Transformation
(http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/ujet20), to which successful conference
papers will be invited.

IMPORTANT DATES
Paper Submission: March 18, 2013 (EXTENDED)
Notification of acceptance: April 29, 2013
Camera ready: May 13, 2013
Workshop: June 18, 2013
BACKGROUND
In the age of outsourcing, dynamic business networks, and global commerce, it is inevitable that organizations will need to develop methods, tools and techniques to design, engineer, and assess processes and services that meet regulatory, standard and contractual obligations. Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) can be expected to play a significant part in several applications. This area is emerging as a critical and challenging area of research and innovation. It introduces, among others, the need for new or adapted modeling approaches for compliance requirements, extension of process and service modeling and execution frameworks for compliance and risk management, and detection of policy violations. In addition, it introduces questions relating specifically to the use of technology to support compliance management. For example, how auditors and regulators can put into use techniques like continuous monitoring and data analysis to assess whether an organization complies wi
th relev
ant rules and regulations, or how technology can be used to support assessment of design and operational effectiveness of controls.
This workshop will provide, for the fifth year running, a forum for researchers from diverse areas and make a consolidated contribution in the form of new and extended methods that address the challenges of governance, risk and compliance in information systems. Industry papers are also encouraged at this workshop.

CALL FOR PAPERS
*Extended submission deadline: 14March 2013*
*1^st International Workshop on Knowledge Management in Software
Engineering (KMISE) *
*to be held in conjunction with the SEKE?13*
**
*Knowledge management (KM) has been recognized as an essential component
of knowledge-intensive processes, such as software engineering. Current
software development processes suffer all too often from inappropriate
project costs and duration estimations, cancelation and failures. The
developed software product is frequently found fragile and unreliable;
not fully complying with the requirements; difficult to upgrade and
more. KM can facilitate software engineering by different ways, e.g.,
increasing the reuse of development experience, processes and products
and creating a communication layer between developers and end-users.
Current KM systems enable to organize the accumulated experience for
better storage and retrieval and open internal communication channels
within the development teams and external communication channels between
the organization and the end-users, throughout the development and
integration processes. *
*The Knowledge Management in Software Engineering workshop will focus on
research that examines real settings where KM is embedded in SE,
evaluating its role and influence on the software development process
and its outcomes. The workshop aims at discussing the current state of
ongoing research, industry needs, future trends, and sharing practical
experiences, involving both academics and practitioners. KMISE is an
interactive workshop that aims to connect participants and establish
long-term collaborations between them. *
*Submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of significance,
originality and technical quality. Submissions must be in PDF or DOC
format. Papers should clearly establish the research contribution and
the relation to previous research. Members of an international and solid
program committee will review all submissions. *

Scope
The International Conference on Similarity Search and Applications (SISAP)
is an annual forum for researchers and application developers in the area of
similarity data management. It aims at the technological problems shared by
numerous application domains, such as data mining, information retrieval,
computer vision, pattern recognition, computational biology, geography,
biometrics, machine learning, and many others that need similarity searching
as a necessary supporting service.
The SISAP initiative (www.sisap.org) aims to become a forum to exchange
real-world, challenging and innovative examples of applications, new
indexing techniques, common test-beds and benchmarks, source code and
up-to-date literature through its web page, serving the similarity search
community. Traditionally, SISAP puts emphasis on the distance-based
searching, but in general the conference concerns both the effectiveness and
efficiency aspects of any similarity search problem.
The series started in 2008 as a workshop and has developed over the years
into an international conference with Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS) proceedings. As in previous editions, a small selection of the best
papers presented at the conference will be recommended for inclusion in a
special issue of Information Systems. In October 2013, SISAP will take place
in A Coruna, Spain.
Keynote Speakers
Ricardo Baeza-Yates (VP of Yahoo! Research for Europe, Middle East and
Latin America)

Final version: July, 10th, 2013
Conference: October 2-4, 2013
Submission guidelines
Papers submitted to SISAP 2013 must be written in English and formatted
according to the LNCS guidelines. Full papers can be up to 12 pages, while
short papers, case-studies/applications, and demos can be up to 6 pages
(read below for types of contribution). By submitting a paper, its authors
commit to have the paper presented at the conference by at least one of them
if the paper is accepted.
Contributions
Authors are invited to submit previously unpublished papers on their
research in the area of similarity search and applications. Papers should
present original research contributions which bring out the importance of
algorithms to applications. SISAP submissions can be of three kinds:
Research papers (full and short): SISAP accepts both full (12 pages) and
short papers (6 pages). The full papers are expected to be descriptions of
complete technical work, while the short papers will describe interesting,
innovative ideas, which nevertheless require more work to mature - vision
papers should also be submitted as short papers. All papers, regardless of
size, will be given an entry in the conference proceedings.
Case-studies and applications: Submissions describe applications of existing
similarity search technologies to interesting problems, including a
description of the encountered challenges, how they were overcome, and the
lessons learned. All papers on this track will be given an entry in the
conference proceedings and a presentation slot, though the presentation slot
duration may be shorter than for full research papers.
Demonstration papers: Submissions should provide the motivation for the
demonstrated concepts, the information about the technology and the system
to be demonstrated (including a system description, functionality and
figures when applicable), and should state the significance of the
contribution. Evaluation criteria for the demonstration proposals include:
the novelty, the technical advances and challenges, and the overall
practical attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Demonstration papers
will also be given an entry in the conference proceedings - online demos are
expected at the conference.
