2nd CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS
Book: Demand-Driven Web Services: Theory, Technologies and Applications
Edited by Zhaohao Sun and John Yearwood
To be published by IGI Global, USA
Website: http://www.igi-global.com/publish/call-for-papers/call-details/927
Theme
Web services are playing a pivotal role both in business, service
computing and social networking services, and cloud computing. This is
also the case in the traditional FREG (foods, resources, energy and
goods) services, because almost all traditional services are replaced
fully or partially by web services. Demand-driven web services (DDWS)
as a tri-paradigm, a computing paradigm, a service paradigm, and a
management paradigm, is becoming important for web services, service
computing, cloud computing, and social networking computing. However,
many fundamental issues in developing DDWS remain open. For example,
what is the demand theory of web services? What is a demand-driven
architecture of web services? How should real world demands be
classified? How should web services be classified? How can an ontology
of web services be developed? This book will address these issues by
exploring the cutting-edge theory, technologies, and methodologies of
demand driven web services based on the novel classification of
demands and web services emphasizing cloud services, mobile services,
social networking services and e-business services from a perspective
of computing, service and management. This book also provides
applications of the proposed theory, technologies and methodologies to
successful demand-driven web services in the real world. The proposed
approaches will facilitate research and development of web services,
e-business, service computing, mobile computing, cloud computing, and
social computing.
Aims and Scope
This book aims at a broad audience of researchers and practitioners,
and provides the reader with an updated understanding of demand-driven
web services, cloud services, mobile services, and social networking
services by attracting high quality manuscripts from academic
researchers, policy makers and practitioners in this area. Papers of
all theoretical and technological approaches and applications are
welcome.
Submissions that cross multiple disciplines such as service, business,
management, industry, information systems, and intelligent systems to
develop theory and provide technologies and applications that could
move theory and practice forward in demand-driven web services, cloud
services, mobile services, e-business services, and social networking
services are especially encouraged.
Topics
Topics of contributions include, but are not limited to, the following
Part I. Theory of demand-driven web services

CONTENTS OF THIS ISSUE OF JGITM (VOL. 16, NO.2, April 2013)
THE WORLD IT PROJECT: A PROGRAM ON INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AND CALL FOR
PARTICIPATION
Prashant Palvia, Editor in Chief, University of North Carolina at
Greensboro, pcpalvia(a)uncg.edu <mailto:pcpalvia@uncg.edu>
Much of the research in information systems and information technology
(IS/IT) has been dominated by a U.S-centric or a Western-centric view.
This editorial describes the ?World IT Project? which will investigate
important world issues. A good understanding of the critical IT issues
facing firms and their employees and their surrounding context will be
important from the firm, national, and international points of view.
The overall research framework is presented. Since this is a massive
project involving data collection from over 40 countries and will take a
number of years to complete, opportunities exist for international
researchers to collaborate. There are many rewards to country
investigators in joining the project.
STRATEGIC PURPOSE OF SOFTWARE PATENTS: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF GERMAN
ORGANIZATIONS

Kai Reimers, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, reimers(a)wi.rwth-aachen.de
<mailto:reimers@wi.rwth-aachen.de>
Given the global environment, the question of why organizations from one
country seek patent protection from another country is of concern to
both organizations and researchers. To better understand the strategic
rationale motivating non-US firms to seek software patents in the US, an
exploratory multi-case study involving three German firms was conducted.
Results suggest that, at a minimum, obtaining US software patents is a
strategic necessity. Firms were also found to use software patents for
protection against infringing activities and for strengthening
competitive advantage. Possible explanations are provided using the
Miles and Snow?s strategy topology. Recommendations for future research
and integration with existing theories are also presented.
TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS INCUBATORS IN CHINA AND INDIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Yong Lu, The Pennsylvania State University, yul14(a)psu.edu
<mailto:yul14@psu.edu>
Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) in China and India are compared by
employing an analytical framework that combines the national system of
innovation concept and a modified TBI integrative framework. Two
research questions are investigated: What are the management polices &
practices of, and incubation services offered by the TBIs in China and
India?, and How successful are the TBI?s in China and India? Findings
reveal that there are a number of similarities (including objectives,
selection criteria for tenants, funding of new ventures, and basic
services provided) and differences (including ownership/ legal status,
structure and governance, funding, value-added and specialists services,
incubation period, number of TBIs, tenants, employees, and revenues)
between China and India. Both systems evolved due to specific national
context, which led to most of these differences
THE IMPACT OF ICT INVESTMENTS ON HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: A REGRESSION SPLINES
ANALYSIS

Irwin Brown, University of Cape Town, South Africa,
irwin.brown(a)uct.ac.za <mailto:irwin.brown@uct.ac.za>
The purpose of this study is to explore the conditional impacts of ICT
investments (Hardware, Software, Internal Services Spending and
Telecommunication) on two dimensions of Human Development (Standard of
Living and Health) within three contexts (classified as High, Medium and
Low income countries. The study utilized a novel approach called
regression splines to analyse the data. Results suggest, among other
things, that: (1) the impact of investments in the different ICT
components varies with context; (2) impacts are in many cases
conditional and complex; and (3) the direction of impacts of ICT
investment on Standard of Living may be different from the corresponding
directions of impacts on Health. It is therefore necessary for policy
makers and IS executives to do in-depth tradeoff analysis between the
different components of ICT investment to determine appropriate allocations.

BOOK REVIEW: THE USE OF SMART MOBILE EQUIPMENT FOR THE INNOVATION IN
ORGANIZATIONAL COORDINATION, BY NAM JAE CHO
Reviewed by Roberto Vinaja, Texas A&M University?San Antonio, USA,
bvinaja(a)tamusa.tamus.edu <mailto:bvinaja@tamusa.tamus.edu>
The proliferation WANs, smartphones, tablets, and other portable devices
has catalyzed the benefits of mobile systems. Professor Cho provides an
Asian perspective on this burgeoning phenomenon. The study described in
the book provides empirical evidence and triangulation by combining case
study and survey methodologies. The case is about SMRT (Seoul
Metropolitan Railway Transit, one of the largest transportation
organizations). SMRT manages 30,000 facilities and serves 3.4 million
passengers each day. The IT environment is experiencing a convergence of
technologies that were previously independent, such as
telecommunications, computing, and broadcasting. This book examines the
relationship between the convergence of IT and coordination within an
organization.

Call for Papers
17^th UK Systems Society International Conference, St Anne?s College,
Oxford, UK; September 9-11 2013
The theme of this year?s conference is ?Systems and Society: ideas from
practice?.
Living In the 21st century, it is difficult for anyone to be unaware of
the interconnectedness of ?things?. To take just one example widely
covered in the Press, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico in 2010 had far reaching consequences, causing extensive damage
to marine and wildlife habitats, to the Gulf's fishing and tourism
industries, and hence to the livelihoods of many people in the USA and
Mexico. The subsequent White House commission reported that /"The root
causes are systemic and, absent significant reform in both industry
practices and government policies, might well recur" /(The Telegraph, 5
January 2011)/./ This shows that there is a great need for effective
Systems thinking, and that it is vital for industry, government,
academics and practitioners to engage with one another. Society, which
transcends any national boundaries, requires appropriate tools for
systemic inquiry, together with both a spirit of collaboration and the
political will for change.
Systems tools, techniques and methodologies can only be helpful in
addressing real world problems if there is opportunity for feedback from
companies and government agencies on their use, usefulness and usability
in practical contexts. There is a continuing need for Systems research
to take existing ideas forward and build on them so that they remain
relevant to the kinds of problems faced by new generations.
Contributions are invited from all sections of the Systems community,
whether concerned with Information Systems, management systems,
environmental systems or development and application of theory in
Systems or cybernetics. These could be accounts of the kinds of problems
faced by organizations for which Systems tools are required;
presentations of feedback on use of systemic approaches to tackle such
problems; suggested new approaches or adaptations to those we already
know; or developments in Systems theory to inform our thinking for the
future.
Abstracts and proposals, or full papers are invited by May 31 2013

============================================
Thematik
========

__________________________________________________________________
Scope
For the successful realisation of complex systems of interacting and
reactive software and hardware components the use of a precise language
at different stages of the development process is of crucial
importance. Petri nets are becoming increasingly popular in this area,
as they provide a uniform language supporting the tasks of modelling,
validation, and verification. Their popularity is due to the fact that
Petri nets capture fundamental aspects of causality, concurrency and
choice in a natural and mathematically precise way without compromising
readability.
The workshop PNSE'13 (Petri nets and Software Engineering) will take
place as a satellite event of Petri Nets 2013.
The use of Petri nets (P/T-nets, coloured Petri nets and extensions) in
the formal process of software engineering, covering modelling,
validation, and verification, will be presented as well as their
application and tools supporting the disciplines mentioned above.
__________________________________________________________________
