ICLP 2001 workshop SAVE 2001
Specification, Analysis and Validation for Emerging Technologies
in Computational Logic
http://www.disi.unige.it/person/DelzannoG/save.html
Dec 1, 2001 , Coral Beach Hotel and Resort, Paphos, Cyprus
Submission Deadline: August 25, 2001
The huge increase in interconnectivity we have witnessed in the last decade
has boosted the development of systems which are often large-scale,
distributed, time-critical, and possibly acting in an unreliable or
malicious environment. Furthermore, software and hardware components are
often mobile, and have to interact with a potentially arbitrary number of
other entities.
These systems require solid formal techniques for their verification and
analysis. In this respect, computational logic plays an increasingly
important role, both providing formal methods for proving system's
correctness and tools - e.g. using techniques like constraint programming
and theorem proving - for verifying their properties.
In addition, computational logic is gaining importance as tool for the
specification of (part) of these systems. For instance, one can think at the
specification, in a form of temporal logic, of a communication protocol.
Such specification offers the advantage that one can reason about it using
formal methods, and at the same time it is often easily executable by
rewriting it into a logic-based programming language.
Extending and shifting slightly from the scope of the predecessors (on
verification and logic languages) held in the context of past editions of
ICLP, the aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested
in the use of computational logicas a tool for the specification, analysis
and validation of systems, with particular emphasis on (but not restricted
to) emerging technologies like World Wide Web and E-Commerce, (protocols
for) Smart Cards and Mobile Telephony, Wireless Technology, Hybrid Systems,
Real-Time and Distributed systems etc.
Topics
The topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Specification languages and rapid prototyping:
Logic programming and its extensions
First-order, constructive, modal and temporal logic
Constraints
Type theory
Analysis:
Abstract interpretation
Static analysis
Validation:
Simulation and testing
Deductive methods
Model checking
Theorem proving
The preferred issues include, but are not limited to:
Mobility: specification and verification of mobile code.
Security: access rights, information flow, and security protocols.
Interaction, coordination, negotiation, communication and exchange on the
Web. Open and infinite-state systems.
Real-time systems.
Important Dates:
Deadline for submissions: August 25, 2001.
Notification of acceptance/rejection: September 15, 2001.
Final papers due: October 5, 2001.
Authors should submit papers of at most 15 pages, in postscript format,
formatted for A4 paper, to Giorgio Delzanno (giorgio(a)disi.unige.it) by
the 25th of August 2001. The proceedings will be published in electronic
format. A printed version will be distributed to all
participants of the workshop.
On the basis of the number and quality of the submissions, we could also
consider the possibility of inviting submissions for a special issue of an
international journal dedicated to the workshop.

This month's paper addresses an important practical question - how to
reduce errors in spreadsheets. Such errors are known to be rampant. The
solution suggested here is collaborative rather than individual work.
This proposition was tested by means of an experiment.
The paper is entitled "An Experiment In Collaborative Spreadsheet
Development" and the authors are Raymond R. Panko, University Of Hawaii
and Richard P. Halverson, Jr. of Guide.Net, Inc.
Their findings suggest that group construction of spreadsheets leads to
significant reductions in error rates. Acceptance of group work was also
strong as participants indicated a belief that group work leads to
better results.
Rather surprising is the finding that group work does not lead to
greater satisfaction with the results than working alone. Food for
thought is provided especially by the indication that satisfaction with
the process is associated with poorer performance. This contradicts the
conventional use of satisfaction as one of the indicators of system
success. Perhaps it is time to reexamine the relationship between
success and satisfaction, or at least to tease out the contingencies
affecting the relationship.

Special Issue on the "Globalization of Electronic Commerce"
The Information Society
Guest Editors: Kenneth L. Kraemer and Jason Dedrick
Manuscripts due: September 1, 2001
Electronic commerce is spreading rapidly around the world, driven by forces
such as the diffusion of the Internet and information technology, the
creation of global production and distribution networks by multinational
corporations, the expansion of international capital markets, and reduction
of trade barriers by most countries. However, e-commerce is still dominated
by the U.S. and a few other developed countries, whereas its adoption is
highly uneven elsewhere. While global forces may encourage e-commerce use
in all countries, variations in national context lead to major differences
in the rate and nature of e-commerce adoption, and in its impacts on
national economic and social structures.
For this special issue, the journal seeks papers that address questions
about the diffusion and impacts of e-commerce across different national
environments. The following is a list of such issues, but contributors may
address other related issues as well:
* How do global trends such as technology innovation and economic
liberalization influence international diffusion of the Internet and
e-commerce?
* What environmental factors influence the diffusion of e-commerce use
within countries? For instance, how important are telecommunications
networks, shipping and transportation, financial transfer mechanisms,
skilled human resources? Do these factors limit the potential adoption of
e-commerce in less developed countries?
* How do national policies affect the adoption of e-commerce? These
can include policies specifically related to e-commerce, such as digital
signatures, or more general policies such as telecommunications or financial
deregulation.
* Is e-commerce being adopted as a substitute for traditional commerce
channels, or as a complement to them?
* What are the social and economic impacts of e-commerce, and how are
they affected by national environments and policies?
* Is there a global digital divide, and should it be a concern for
national governments and international agencies?
These papers may include country case studies, empirical data analyses,
comparisons across countries (including small sets of countries in a
region), industry sector studies, and studies of specific policy issues, as
well as conceptual or theoretical papers.
Papers will be subject to the normal review process of The Information
Society, and should follow the standard guidelines for submission to the
journal.

e-Collaboration technologies are broadly defined here as technologies that
enable collaboration among individuals engaged in a common task. Examples of
such technologies are Web-based chat tools, Web-based asynchronous
conferencing tools, e-mail, listservs, collaborative writing tools, group
decision support systems, etc. The e-Collaboration in Organizations track
invites papers on the design and implementation of e-collaboration
technologies, assessment of the impact of e-collaboration technologies on
organizations, and theoretical considerations on links between
e-collaboration technologies and organizational outcomes.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS
The e-collaboration Technologies in Organizations Track encourages the
submission of quality papers and panel and workshop proposals dealing with
(but not limited to) the following topics:
. Comprehensive reviews of previous studies on e-collaboration technologies
in organizations.
. Analyses of different research methods and their impact on the study of
e-collaboration technologies in organizations.
. Design, implementation, and assessment of e-business solutions.
. e-collaboration technologies impact on knowledge management and
organizational learning.
. e-collaboration technologies support for quality certification programs.
. e-collaboration technologies support for distributed process reengineering
and process improvement.
. Design and evaluation of intelligent e-collaboration technologies in
organizational settings.
. Design and evaluation of asynchronous learning networks (ALNs)in
organizational settings.
. Organizational and national culture as moderating factors in the adoption
and use of e-collaboration technologies in organizations.
. e-collaboration technologies support for the creation of virtual teams and
virtual organizations.
All paper submissions will be handled in a centralized way by IRMA.
Therefore, please do not make submissions directly to the track chair.
