This track will explore national and international implications of the flow of digital data across national boundaries, conflicts of laws and culture regarding content or expression in communications, and comparative analysis of national laws that regulate or tax electronic messages or the transport of electronic databases across national boundaries. The key question is what will it take to be a success in the business environment of tomorrow? Three forces account for most of the convergence of business strategy with organizational structure and information systems. They are rapid innovation of new information technologies, widespread creation of new ideas and concepts about information itself, and extensive development of new information-intensive organizational forms and business strategies. As more countries join the ranks of the industrialized nations, the sophistication of the global market and number of global competitors have eliminated any advantage to a simple presence in international markets. Companies tied to the information economy are typically global from their inception - the Internet does not permit them to compete in only national markets. At the same time we see massive consolidations of industries from automobiles to banking to pharmaceuticals to cell phones and Internet service providers around the globe. Today the international/global/multinational/transnational organization must employ strategic thinking to compete successfully. The focus of this track will be on understanding the fundamental conditions of the industry and the firm in order to generate and sustain a competitive strategy. Gaines, University of Calgary Standards for E-Business include the test methods, procedures, classification, terminology, specification and practices that can be used in commerce. By providing a set of common technical specifications, standards have been the basis for enabling inter- and intra-industry trade. A major task for the IT industry in the coming years will be to support the needs of organizations as they attempt to transform from traditional business practices to the E-business paradigm. Achieving interoperability between disparate inter-organizational systems is a defining need for applications and processes related to E-business. In this new environment there is a growing interest among businesses, standards organizations and industry consortia for developing widely accepted rules of engagement or standards to facilitate interoperability among information products and services. There is general consensus that innovative and strategic rethinking will be needed from organizational practitioners and academic researchers as new rules for technology supported commerce are developed. This special issue of the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS) seeks theoretical, empirical, and/or case oriented contributions presenting innovative and interesting perspectives related to Information Technology Standardization issues related to E-business systems.
