From: Gurpreet Dhillon <dhillon(a)CCMAIL.NEVADA.EDU>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
Dear Colleagues,
As you know post September 11, we had to cancel/postpone the IFIP TC
11.1&11.2 joint conference on "Advances in information security management
and small systems security". We had asked all registered participants to
indicate their preferences as to cancelling or rescheduling the event.
Almost all participants wanted the event to be rescheduled, preferably
along with another ongoing conference.
We are pleased to announce that IFIP TC 11.1&11.2 IS Security joint
conference will now be held in conjunction with the ISOneWorld conference
<http://isoneworld.org/> in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on April 4 & 5, 2002.
Participants wishing to participate in this event are requested to contact
me for further details.

Deception is defined as messages and information knowingly transmitted to
create a false impression or conclusion. There are many ways to deceive,
such as: lies, fabrications, concealments, misdirection, bluffs, fakery,
mimicry, tall tales, white lies, deflections, evasions, equivocation,
exaggerations, camouflage and strategic ambiguity. A major risk to our way
of life in the 21st century is the failure to detect and counter deception
in all forms of communication. This requires safeguarding our communication
and information systems against manipulation, infiltration, and deception by
adversaries. Yet achieving high information assurance is complicated by the
very speed, complexity, volume, and globality of communication and
information exchange that the communication systems now afford. It is also
linked by the fallibility of human deception detection. The complexity of
detecting and countering deceptions that involve humans as a source,
conduit, or target defies a completely automated solution, and yet we must
strive toward detection of deception from human communication and artifacts
from computer systems. We are looking to publish papers in the following
areas of deception detection: 1) theories of deception and detection
processes, 2) experimental and longitudinal research that make humans
susceptible to false positives and false negatives, 3) reliable indicators
of deceit under varying task and communication conditions, 4) training
courses, methodologies and computer-assisted training programs to improve
detection abilities, 5) prototypes for automated tools to augment human
detection, 6) techniques and strategies to distinguish truthful from
deceptive information and communications, 7) descriptions of test cases,
scenarios, laboratories and equipment to test and detect deception.
Deadlines:
Please respond by December 31, 2001 with a three page abstract, if you plan
to submit a paper to the special issue on detection of deception. We will
provide feedback by January 31, 2002. Full papers are due by March 31,
2002.

Dear colleagues,
CWRU and the department of information systems organized a workshop titled
"Explorations with the New Wave
The Design and Exploitation of Ubiquitous Computing Environments" at
26-28.10 this year. The workshop was attended by a diverse group of people
who all share an interest in understanding this new phenomenon
technologically, socially and from the business view point.
Because the papers submitted and presentations made in the conference may
have a wider interest we have made them available at the workshop web-site
(sorry- not all presentations are available)
http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/pervasive/
We will add in December some video-streaming services for the presentations
for those who want to see what the people attending look like.
You are welcome to visit the site and explore what was discussed in the
workshop.
A special issue will be published from some of the results of the workshop
by the end of 2002 in CACM.
We are also going to organize a second workshop in fall 2003 where also a
limited participation is possible by submission. This will be announced in
2002 in ISworld and some other lists.
Hope you can enjoy the results
Sincerely

CALL FOR PAPERS
21st International Conference on Conceptual Modeling
-
ER 2002
October 7-11, 2002, Tampere, Finland
Host: University of Tampere
http://er2002.cs.uta.fi/
___________________________________________________________________
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
Conceptual modeling is fundamental to the information systems
discipline, including new e-world activities. It has become a major
mechanism for understanding and representing organizations and the
information systems that support them. ER 2002 encompasses the entire
spectrum of conceptual modeling. It addresses research and practice in
areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual
modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual
models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective
information system implementations including advanced applications such
as e-commerce, knowledge management, learning environments,
telecommunications, and enterprise management systems.
Conceptual models instantiate various levels of abstraction. They must
facilitate understanding and foster communication between technology
experts and those who would benefit from the application of those
technologies. They must enable users of these technologies to
understand their current applications and visualize new applications. To
do so our understanding and knowledge about information and how to
describe, represent, and intelligently utilize it must be further
developed. We invite researchers and practitioners from both computer
sciences and management information systems. Reports of new ideas and
approaches, useful experiences and informative experiments are all
welcome. Regular and industrial papers are solicited along with
proposals for workshops, tutorials, panel sessions and posters. In
particular, ER 2002 will emphasize conceptual modeling issues related to

Call for Papers (and submission guidelines)
Authors of regular papers are invited to submit original contributions
not exceeding 5,000 words (approximately 20 double-spaced pages)
electronically. These full papers may be research papers or industry
oriented papers. They will be reviewed by the Program Committee and
accepted papers will be included in the proceedings. The papers must not
be submitted to or accepted by any other conference or journal. The
authors must submit the abstract of the paper by 20 February, 2002, and
the full paper by 8 March, 2002. The ER2002 home page
(http://er2002.cs.uta.fi/) will contain further details on electronic
submissions.
The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture
Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series in time for distribution at the
conference. It will contain full papers and invited papers. In parallel
to the printed volumes, the content will be made available as full-text
electronic versions of LNCS books. Authors of selected papers will be
invited to submit extended versions for possible publication in the Data
& Knowledge Engineering journal.
Call for Workshop Proposals
A series of workshops will be held in conjunction with the Conceptual
Modeling ER2002 conference to encourage interaction between research
groups and also between researchers and practitioners. We solicit
proposals for workshops related to the conference topics. Workshop
topics should be inline with the conference topics. Proposals for
workshops should stress how they intend to provide more insight into the
proposed topics with respect to the main conference. The scope
definition of the proposal should encompass only some of the topics of
the main conference. Preliminary workshop proposals should be submitted
to the workshop co-chairs, Antoni Olivé (olive(a)lsi.upc.es), Eric Yu
(eric(a)cs.toronto.edu), and Masatoshi Yoshikawa
(yosikawa(a)is.aist-nara.ac.jp) by December 20, 2001. Prior contact with
the workshop co-chairs is encouraged. Final workshop proposals must be
submitted by 30 January, 2002, to the workshop co-chairs. Preprint of
the workshop materials will be distributed at the workshops. Proceedings
of all workshops will be published as a single volume in Springer-Verlag
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, separate from the conference
proceedings, after the workshops.
Call for Tutorial Proposals
We solicit tutorial proposals of interest to ER2002 attendees. Proposals
should clearly identify the intended audience and the requested level of
expertise for attending the tutorial, as well as provide the scope of
what will be covered. The proposal should also indicate whether it is
planned to be presented as a 90 min tutorial (inside the conference), or
a half day (3 hours) or a full day (6 hours) pre-conference tutorial.
Proposals should be submitted to the tutorial chair, Veda C. Storey
(vstorey(a)gsu.edu) by March 8, 2002.
Call for Panel Proposals
We solicit proposals for panel sessions related to the conference topics
about which there is controversy and thus a need for public discussion.
Panel proposals should be at most two pages long, specify the questions
the panel will discuss, and should include at least a tentative list of
panelists. We strongly encourage panels that have a mixture of 2
academic and 2 industry panelists (plus the chair). We expect that a
range of viewpoints will be represented in the panel session. The role
of the panel chair is to state the initial relevant questions and
moderate the panel session. The other panelists are requested to give a
short talk and to discuss/debate among the panelists and to interact
with the audience. Proposals should be submitted to the panel chair,
Heinrich C. Mayr by March 8, 2002 (mayr(a)ifit.uni-klu.ac.at).
Call for Industrial Presentation Proposals
We solicit submissions for industrial presentation contributions.
Reports on significant measurements of results and problems encountered,
or new innovative methods or systems are especially valuable for the
research community. The presentation can be a demonstration and an
extended abstract (at most 2,000 words), or only an extended abstract,
whose content describes an industry-oriented topic (e.g. some advanced
application, or experiences of application of new software). The
presentation proposal will be evaluated by the industry chair and
accepted papers will be published in the workshop volume. Demonstration
proposals should describe the software to be demonstrated and specify
the kind of hardware required. In the case of a demostration, prior
contact with the webmaster is recommended. Special equipments are not
provided. Proposals should be submitted to the industrial chair, Olavi
Maanavilja (olavi.maanavilja(a)m-real.com), by 17 June, 2002.
Call for Demonstrations and Posters
During the Conceptual Modeling ER2002 conference, a special room will be
reserved for posters and demostrations. Industrial or academic research
projects of any scale are invited to illustrate innovative concepts,
theories or prototype systems on a poster and as a demontration.
Proposals should include the title, names of presenters, and
one-or-two-page outline describing the project, and what would be
presented. The outline will be reviewed and included into the workshops
proceedings. Posters and demostrations will be presented informally to
visitors. It is not a talk in regular sessions. Proposals should be
submitted to the demonstration and poster chair Jyrki Nummenmaa,
(jyrki(a)cs.uta.fi), by 17 June, 2002.

CONFERENCE PLACE
Finland is situated in northern Europe between the 60th and 70th
parallels of latitude. It is one of the Nordic Countries. It is the
seventh largest country in Europe, with 5.2 million inhabitants. Most of
the population is living in the southern part of the country. Finland
has a national strategy to make the country into an information society.
Some recent advances show that this effort has developed well. You will
find more information from the pages of Virtual Finland:
http://virtual.finland.fi
Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland (about 192 000 inhabitants)
and the most important centre outside the capital area. It is located in
Southern Finland on a beautiful place between two big lakes, about 180
km north from Helsinki.
http://www.tampere.fi/english.htm
Due to its industrial background and universities, Tampere is at the
leading edge of high technology and the information highway. Nationally
and to some degree internationally the city is already a significant
centre of information technology. Tampere's municipal policy for the
21st century emphasizes information as a key to the future.
Connections are good: direct flights from Stockholm (1 hour) and
Copenhagen (2 hours), good connections to the Helsinki airport from all
over the world, and then several domestic flights from Helsinki to
Tampere every day (30 mins.).
Train connection from the center of Helsinki to the center of Tampere
every hour (about 2 hours). Bus connections from Helsinki airport and
downtown Helsinki to Tampere every hour (about 2 hours). See the web
page:
http://www.tampere.fi/conventionbureau/location.html
Two universities: University of Tampere and Technical University of
Tampere.
Conference venue: Tampere Hall,
Tampere Hall Congress Centre was inaugurated in 1990 and is the largest
congress and concert centre in Scandinavia. Its modern architecture and
integral works of art make Tampere Hall a sight worth seeing in itself.
