Call for Papers and Case Studies
Journal of SMET Education: Innovations and Research
If you have an article or case study that describes educational innovations
in the fields of technology and engineering, the Journal of SMET (Science,
Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology) Education: Innovations and
Research looks forward to publishing your work if it is acceptable to the
reviewers. The journal will now publish recent developments that impact
SMET education in such areas as policy and industry needs. In addition, we
are also expanding its scope to include articles that report innovative
methodologies in education that are well founded in SMET content, informed
by educational research, and tested through assessment of impact on student
learning. The journal is brought out in 2-colors and includes color
photographs, charts, and other visual aids in order to bring engineering and
technical topics alive. The journal is circulated to 5,000 educators in the
SMET area in 4-year and 2-year colleges and policy makers in the Government
and private industry. It is developed by the Laboratory for Innovative
Technology and Engineering Education (LITEE) and South East Advanced
Technological Education Consortium. Southern Nuclear is a sponsor of the
journal.
Case Studies: Cases accepted for publication will deal with issues important
to faculty members teaching in the SMET fields. The journal not only
emphasizes cases based on field research, but also accepts secondary-sourced
cases. The journal encourages case studies that cut across the different
SMET areas as well as cover non-technical issues such as finance, cost,
management, risk, safety, etc. The case studies are expected to be framed
around problems facing a decision-maker in an organization. Previously
published cases or articles (except those appearing as a short overview in
proceedings, posted on web pages, or presented in conferences or workshops)
are not eligible for consideration. The journal would accept cases
synthesized from author experience.
Research Articles: Articles accepted for publication will describe
experiments, innovations, awards, and programs involving SMET education. The
articles are expected to describe the details of the experiments, provide
visual materials that make the experiment clear to the reader, and discuss
the impact on implementation in classrooms. Articles need to include an
evaluation or assessment of the benefit of the instructional innovation.
Articles that describe programs that promote SMET education are also
welcome. Articles that address policy issues in SMET education are also
welcome.
Submission Process:
Four copies of the manuscript or an electronic version of the case
study/article in Microsoft Word should be submitted to one of the

A book Edited by: Hamid Nemati and Christopher Barko, The University of
North Carolina at Greensboro
For more information, please see:
http://elvis.uncg.edu/bae/hrnemati/odmcfp.htm
This book is the result of the observation that data mining is gaining
greater acceptance within organizations and delivering colossal
benefits, yet there are few scholarly books devoted to exploration of
both the organizational and technical factors of how organizations
leverage data resources to gain a competitive advantage. This is the
essence of Organizational Data Mining (ODM). Organizational Data Mining
(ODM) is defined as leveraging organizational data, information and
knowledge assets to acquire and maintain a competitive advantage.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS
This edited peer reviewed scholarly book seeks original contributions
that explore a wide range of issues addressing all aspects of ODM.
Manuscripts ranging from conceptual frameworks to case studies and
empirical research are encouraged. Acceptable topics will include (but
are not limited to) any of the following topics as related to ODM:
Research frameworks, methods, methodologies, architectures, and
infrastructure issues in the design, implementation and maintenance of
ODM projects and initiatives; Technical and organizational issues in the
design, implementation and maintenance of processes that generate,
share, use, disseminate and protect organizational data, information and
knowledge; Issues surrounding the articulation and communication of the
purpose and the nature of ODM and connecting it to other strategic and
operational initiatives and activities of the organization; Strategic
implications of ODM; Organizational learning; Decision support systems;
Knowledge management; Data warehousing; Data mining tools, technologies
and algorithms; Artificial Intelligence in Organizations; Knowledge
discovery from databases; Web and E-commerce integration, strategies and
challenges; Technical and database challenges in ODM; Measuring ODM
effectiveness; Organizational, managerial, personnel, cultural,
procedural and political issues in ODM; Global and cultural aspects and
considerations in ODM; Case studies in all aspects of ODM; and ODM
future trends.

on Cybernetics and Systems Research
=================================================
supported by EUNITE
April 2-5, 2002
University of Vienna,
Vienna, Austria
chairs:
Stefanos Kollias, Greece
Georg Dorffner, Austria
For this session, papers on any theoretical or
practical aspect of artificial neural networks are
invited. Special focus, however, will be put on the
issue of adaptivity both in practical engineering
applications and in applications of neural networks
to the modeling of human behavior. By adaptivity we
mean the capability of a neural network to adjust
itself to changing environments. We make a careful
distinction between "learning" to devise weight
matrices for a neural network before it is applied
(and usually left unchanged) on one hand, and true
adaptivity of a given neural network to constantly
changing conditions on the other hand - i.e.
incremental learning in unstationary environments.

We are happy to announce that the Proceedings of the
6th Annual Workshop of the ERCIM Working Group on Constraints
are now freely available on line at the Computing Research Repository
(CoRR), see http://arXiv.org/abs/cs/0110012.
We all get plenty of calls for papers for workshops but never hear of
the proceedings. We hope that this example will encourage organizers
of other workshops to place the proceedings in CoRR, as well.
CoRR forms a part of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
archives. They have been widely used since 1992 by the physicists and
mathematicians. The number of connections per day is around 100,000.
CoRR opened, in cooperation with the ACM, in August 1998.
In these archives one can freely search, browse, and post articles
and electronic proceedings of a conference. Additionally, thanks to a
simple alert system one can monitor postings in any of its areas.

9th Annual Cross-Cultural Meeting in Information Systems
Sponsored by the CRIM (Center for Research in Information Management) and by
the Information and Decision Sciences Department, University of Illinois,
Chicago
Call for Participation
You are invited to participate in the 9th Annual Cross-Cultural Research
Meeting. This year the meeting will be on Sunday, December 16 from 1:00 to
5:30 pm, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, only half a block away from the ICIS
conference hotel. This meeting has been a good point of contact for all
those researchers who are interested in discussing cross-cultural research
in Information Systems or who would like to know a little more about what
other researchers are doing in the same area.
The meeting will include five presentations by Seymour Goodman, Robert Mason,
Celia Romm, Michelle Kaarst-Brown, Moez Limayem, Mohamed Khalifa, Robert
Davison and Maris Martinsons. We plan on having ample time for discussion
and interaction. The fee to cover costs with room rental, refreshments, and
audiovisual rental is 30 USD. To ensure quality of the interaction, limited
space will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Payment will be
accepted either in check payable to IDS Department, University of Illinois,
Chicago (please mail to address below), or -- for non-US researchers -- in
cash at the convention location. Advance notice of intention of
participating is recommended to ensure space availability.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Roberto Evaristo, Cross-Cultural Meeting Coordinator (evaristo(a)uic.edu)
