Dear Colleague:
We are delighted to inform you that the 2(1&2) issue of the Journal of SMET
Education: Innovations and Research is now available. The Journal of SMET
(Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology) Education: Innovations
and Research publishes peer-reviewed:(a) real-world case studies and other
innovations in education, (b) research articles from educational research
that informs the readers on teaching and learning endeavors in SMET, and (c)
articles that discuss recent developments that impact SMET education in such
areas as policy and industry needs. Please look at the website
www.jsmet.org for further information.
In the first article, Norman Fortenberry, James Powlik and Maricel
Quintana-Baker describe how SMET education has become more broad-based than
in the past. They argue for more emphasis on SMET education at K-12 and
undergraduate level. They propose six areas that would benefit from the
National Science Foundation's attention in the next decade and beyond.
Kevin Dahm and James Newell describe how a sophomore class developed an
economic design for a baseball stadium. The course improved the public
speaking skills of the students, gave them experience with open-ended design
problems, and developed their teamwork skills. They report that this project
was a highly successful vehicle for students of all engineering disciplines.
William Call presents a transmission-line fault location case study that is
targeted at two-year technical college students. This case study received
excellent reviews for its ability to develop successful technical
problem-solving skills in students. The instructor's guide shows clearly how
electrical engineering principles can be applied to solve a real-world
problem.
In the next article, Elizabeth Mathias describes how creating and
implementing CD-based simulations of real-world problems can develop a
workforce's capabilities. The project describes methods through which new
workers can develop the skills and knowledge they need to become creative
and responsible problem solvers. This project brought together faculty teams
at five community colleges to collaborate with the Johns Hopkins research
team.
Teresa Larkin-Hein describes the approach followed at American University,
where writing was incorporated into the curriculum for non-physics majors.
The students had to write a paper that was presented at a conference
specifically held for this course and had to follow rigorous steps for
acceptance and presentation of the materials. At the conclusion of the
conference, the students were able to link the active process of writing to
sound, scientific content. In addition, these activities allowed students to
demonstrate a deeper understanding of a topic or set of topics using their
individual learning styles.
Scott Danielson and Sudhir Mehta show how to use pedagogy-based resource
materials for statics instruction. The authors report that the benefits of
these materials include encouraging students to take ownership of their
learning, helping instructors focus on critical content, and turning
classroom lectures into engaging discussions.
The innovative experiments reported by the authors of this issue provide us
with an information base that we can learn from and improve upon to excel in
our profession. Please send in your innovative articles and instructional
materials. We look forward to hearing what you have to say.
These features make the journal different from other academic journals and
provide strong value-added content for you and your students. This journal
currently reaches 5,500 subscribers worldwide. We are constantly striving to
improve the journal, and as part of our quest we will introduce a new
section in the next issue entitled, "SMET People in the News" to showcase
the accomplishments of our journal subscribers. This will be an on-going
feature of the journal and will include a photograph of the individual,
along with a brief summary of his or her accomplishment. If you are already
a subscriber of the journal, please share your accomplishments with other
SMET professionals by sending us the information immediately. If you have
not yet subscribed, we urge you to do so at once and become active in the
SMET professional world.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Chetan S. Sankar, P.K. Raju, Editors-in-Chief

ICEIS 2002
4th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems
Call for Papers ( http://www.iceis.org )
April 3-6, 2002 * Ciudad Real, Spain
Organised by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), the School of
Computer Science and the Department of Computer Science, in Spain, in
co-operation with the Department of Systems and Informatics of the School of
Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (ESTSetúbal) from
Portugal.
SCOPE
The purpose of the 4th International Conference on Enterprise Information
Systems (ICEIS) is to bring together researchers, engineers and
practitioners interested in the advances and business applications of
information systems. Four simultaneous tracks will be held, covering
different aspects of Enterprise Information Systems Applications, including
Enterprise Database Technology, Systems Integration, Artificial
Intelligence, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Analysis and
Specification, Internet Computing and Electronic Commerce.
ICEIS focuses on real world applications; therefore authors should highlight
the benefits of Information Technology for industry and services. Ideas on
how to solve business problems, using IT, will arise from the conference.
Papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques and
general survey papers indicating future directions are also encouraged.
Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas listed
below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors,
will be published in the Proceedings of ICEIS. Acceptance will be based on
quality, relevance and originality. Both full research reports and
work-in-progress reports are welcome. There will be both oral and poster
sessions.
Special sessions, dedicated to case-studies and commercial presentations, as
well as tutorials dedicated to technical/scientific topics are also
envisaged: companies interested in presenting their products/methodologies
or researchers interested in holding a tutorial are invited to contact the
conference secretariat.
Information concerning the previous ICEIS editions (ICEIS'99, ICEIS 2000 and
ICEIS 2001) can be found at http://www.iceis.org,
http://www.est.ips.pt/iceis and http://www.staffs.ac.uk/iceis.
TOPIC AREAS / CONFERENCE TRACKS
Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub-topics list is not
exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the listed sub-topics,

editions. Their names are not yet confirmed.
TUTORIALS
ICEIS 2002 will have several tutorials, as in previous editions, to be
lectured the day before the conference opening. If you would like to propose
a tutorial for ICEIS 2002, please contact the secretariat as soon as
possible. Proposals should specify the topic and scope of the tutorial, the
background knowledge expected of the participants, and a short CV of the
instructor(s).
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Authors should submit a paper in English of about 10 A4 pages, up to 5.000
words, using the submission procedure indicated below. The programme
committee will review all papers and the contact author of each paper will
be notified of the result, by email. Each paper should clearly indicate the
nature of its technical/scientific contribution, and the problems, domains
or environments to which it is applicable. Authors must also indicate the
conference track to which the paper is submitted. The paper must be
carefully checked for correct grammar and spelling.
Paper submission procedure
A blind paper evaluation method will be used. To facilitate that, the
authors are kindly requested to produce and provide two separate files:
A papers front-page, with: the title, author(s), affiliation(s), contact
details, a list of keywords and an abstract.
The full paper, WITHOUT any reference to the authors. The manuscript must
contain, in its first page, the paper title, an abstract and a list of
keywords but NO NAMES OR CONTACT DETAILS WHATSOEVER are to be included in
any part of this file.
The contact author will then use the ICEIS web-based submission facility
available at the conference web site, to enter the contact information of
all paper authors plus the two files indicated in point 1, above. The
facility will automatically send a submission acknowledgement, by email, to
the author indicated as contact author.
The camera-ready format will be enforced only for accepted papers, but
authors are encouraged to use it also for paper submissions, in order to
reduce extra work later. Two templates are provided at the conference web
site: one for Latex and another for MS Word.
Due to space limitations in the Proceedings, the camera-ready version will
be limited to 8 (eight) pages for full papers, 6 (six) for short papers
(progress reports) and 4 (four) for poster presentations. If absolutely
needed, it will be allowed to increase the total number of pages, by 4 extra
pages. However, for each excess page the author will have to pay an
additional fee.

VENUE
Ciudad Real is in Castilla-La Mancha, the Don Quixote's land. It is not easy
to categorize Castilla-La Mancha, for it is a region of great variety and
complexity. On the one hand, there is the ruddy red earth, the windmills,
and simple whitewashed villages of the province of Ciudad Real (which
encompasses most of the area commonly called La Mancha). But there are also
the strangely sculpted cliffs of Cuenca and Albacete, the hilly woodlands of
Guadalajara and the dark mystery and ancient cultures of Toledo. Ciudad Real
is one hour by car from Toledo, fifty minutes by train from Madrid, seventy
minutes by train from Córdoba and two hours by train from Sevilla.

"Exchange Relationship in the Digital Economy"
The rapid proliferation of Electronic Commerce in the form of B2C, B2B
Marketplaces, C2C (Consumer to Consumer) as well as development and use
of Extranets connecting firms with their partners (suppliers and
customers) has given rise to various forms of exchange relationships in
the digital environment. These exchange relationships are likely to be
of varied duration with some built around a few exchanges over a short
period of time, as in B2C and C2C environment, to some that are built
around exchanges transpiring over a long period of time as in some B2B
Marketplace and through Extranets (with partners).
Understanding the forms of these exchange relationships are crucial to
gaining insight into the types of initiatives and actions that firms
should undertake to maximize the return on their investments in
Electronic Commerce related activities. The initiation, nurturing,
development and maintenance of these various forms of exchange
relationships are complex partly because of the evolving nature of the
underlying technology as well as the complex interaction between what is
afforded by the digital environment and the constraints, limitations and
advantages offered by the traditional market environment. Hence, the
purpose of this call for papers in the Special Issue of the Journal of
Electronic Commerce Research is to invite original research papers
investigating the Exchange Relationships in the Digital Economy.
Possible topics for papers (theoretical or empirical) submitted to the
special issue include but are not limited to:
* Models explicating the various forms of exchange relationship in the
B2C, B2B Marketplaces and in the C2C context
* The forms of exchange relationship possible and afforded by the
digital environment between a firm and its business partners
* Factors such as specific characteristics of B2C, B2B Marketplace, C2C
that may affect the development of some forms of exchange relationship
and not others
* Factors facilitating and determining the formation of these various
types of exchange relationships in the digital environment
* Role of Trust in various forms of exchange relationship in the digital
economy
* Exchange relationships built around collaborative advantage in the
digital environment
* Factors affecting and facilitating the initiation, nurturing,
development and maintenance of various forms of exchange relationship in
the digital environment
* Competitive advantage afforded by these exchange relationships in the
digital environment
* Role of privacy, information security, information sharing, knowledge
transfer and sharing in exchange relationships in the digital
environment
