Call for Papers
Information Research (http://InformationR.net/ir/) is planning a
special issue on 'electronic communities'. We are particularly
interested in current research on the nature of the electronic (or
'virtual') 'community', on the means whereby such communities are
established and maintained, their role in information transfer, and the
role of the concept in networked (local or distance) learning.
Papers should be prepared in accordance with the instructions given at
http://informationr.net/ir/author1.html although we will be happy to
receive submissions for review in Word.
Contributions should be e-mailed to Dr. Lee Komito, at
lee.komito(a)ucd.ie by 31st December 2000, for publication in April
2002."

Subject: CFP: Internet-mediated Simulations and Games
Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 13:09:48 -0400
From: Subhasish Dasgupta <dasgupta(a)GWU.EDU>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
CALL FOR PAPERS
On the theme of Internet-mediated simulation/gaming for a special issue
of Simulation & Gaming: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Theory,
Practice, and Research
Guest Editor
Subhasish Dasgupta, Ph.D., The George Washington University
Recent advances in computer and telecommunications technology have
opened doors to new and versatile simulation games. The Internet and
web-based technologies have added a new dimension to the world of
gaming. Rather than being restricted to one room, or one computer in
some cases, games can now be designed and played across geographical
boundaries. Since a crucial component of every simulation and game is
the technological environment where it is run, the advent of new
technology is changing the world of gaming in ways not seen in the past.
This special issue will explore the advent of the Internet and the World
Wide Web and its effect on simulation and gaming in all areas of
business and the social sciences. The issue will include theoretical
papers, empirical studies, and reviews of commercial products and
developmental tools in this area. An earlier issue of Simulation and
Gaming (vol. 30, no. 1, March 1999) was devoted to Internet-based
simulation and games.
The special issue will include (but is not limited to) the following
areas of research:
- Design, development, and use of Internet and Web-based simulations
and games in all areas of business and the social sciences
- Theoretical and empirical studies using Internet or Web-based
simulations and games
- Review of existing Internet and Web-mediated simulations
Contributions from a variety of perspectives are invited, for example,
empirical research (experimental to ethnographic), discussion papers,
description of games, and literature reviews.
Interested authors are invited to submit an abstract, not exceeding 500
words, of their proposed work by November 1, 2001 for initial review.
Accepted proposals will be asked to submit a full paper for review by
December 15, 2001. These papers should strictly follow the Simulation
and Gaming Journal Author Guidelines that is available at:
http://www.unice.fr/sg/authors/index.htm. The entire review process
will be managed electronically.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Deadline for Proposal or Abstracts: November 1, 2001
Decision on Abstracts: November 8, 2001
Deadline for research papers: December 15, 2001
Acceptance/ Rejection decision: February 15, 2001
Revised papers due: April 1, 2001
Accepted papers decision: May 1, 2001

ICEIS 2002
4th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems
Call for Papers ( http://www.iceis.org )
April 3-6, 2002 * Ciudad Real, Spain
Organised by the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM), the School of
Computer Science and the Department of Computer Science, in Spain, in
co-operation with the Department of Systems and Informatics of the School of
Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Set³bal (ESTSet³bal) from
Portugal.
SCOPE
The purpose of the 4th International Conference on Enterprise Information
Systems (ICEIS) is to bring together researchers, engineers and
practitioners interested in the advances and business applications of
information systems. Four simultaneous tracks will be held, covering
different aspects of Enterprise Information Systems Applications, including
Enterprise Database Technology, Systems Integration, Artificial
Intelligence, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Analysis and
Specification, Internet Computing and Electronic Commerce.
ICEIS focuses on real world applications; therefore authors should highlight
the benefits of Information Technology for industry and services. Ideas on
how to solve business problems, using IT, will arise from the conference.
Papers describing advanced prototypes, systems, tools and techniques and
general survey papers indicating future directions are also encouraged.
Papers describing original work are invited in any of the areas listed
below. Accepted papers, presented at the conference by one of the authors,
will be published in the Proceedings of ICEIS. Acceptance will be based on
quality, relevance and originality. Both full research reports and
work-in-progress reports are welcome. There will be both oral and poster
sessions.
Special sessions, dedicated to case-studies and commercial presentations, as
well as tutorials dedicated to technical/scientific topics are also
envisaged: companies interested in presenting their products/methodologies
or researchers interested in holding a tutorial are invited to contact the
conference secretariat.
Information concerning the previous ICEIS editions (ICEIS'99, ICEIS 2000 and
ICEIS 2001) can be found at http://www.iceis.org,
http://www.est.ips.pt/iceis and http://www.staffs.ac.uk/iceis.
TOPIC AREAS / CONFERENCE TRACKS
Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub-topics list is not
exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the listed sub-topics,
although authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related
sub-topics are also acceptable, provided they fit in one of the following
main topic areas:
Databases and Information Systems Integration
Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Systems
Information Systems Analysis and Specification
Internet Computing and Electronic Commerce
WORKSHOPS
ICEIS expects to host several workshops. If you would like to propose the
organization of a workshop to be held in conjunction with ICEIS 2002, please
contact the secretariat as soon as possible.
Keynote Speakers
ICEIS 2002 will have several invited keynote speakers, as in previous
editions. Their names are not yet confirmed.
TUTORIALS
ICEIS 2002 will have several tutorials, as in previous editions, to be
lectured the day before the conference opening. If you would like to propose
a tutorial for ICEIS 2002, please contact the secretariat as soon as
possible. Proposals should specify the topic and scope of the tutorial, the
background knowledge expected of the participants, and a short CV of the
instructor(s).
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Authors should submit a paper in English of about 10 A4 pages, up to 5.000
words, using the submission procedure indicated below. The programme
committee will review all papers and the contact author of each paper will
be notified of the result, by email. Each paper should clearly indicate the
nature of its technical/scientific contribution, and the problems, domains
or environments to which it is applicable. Authors must also indicate the
conference track to which the paper is submitted. The paper must be
carefully checked for correct grammar and spelling.
Paper submission procedure
A blind paper evaluation method will be used. To facilitate that, the
authors are kindly requested to produce and provide two separate files:
A papers front-page, with: the title, author(s), affiliation(s), contact
details, a list of keywords and an abstract.
The full paper, WITHOUT any reference to the authors. The manuscript must
contain, in its first page, the paper title, an abstract and a list of
keywords but NO NAMES OR CONTACT DETAILS WHATSOEVER are to be included in
any part of this file.
The contact author will then use the ICEIS web-based submission facility
available at the conference web site, to enter the contact information of
all paper authors plus the two files indicated in point 1, above. The
facility will automatically send a submission acknowledgement, by email, to
the author indicated as contact author.
The camera-ready format will be enforced only for accepted papers, but
authors are encouraged to use it also for paper submissions, in order to
reduce extra work later. Two templates are provided at the conference web
site: one for Latex and another for MS Word.
Due to space limitations in the Proceedings, the camera-ready version will
be limited to 8 (eight) pages for full papers, 6 (six) for short papers
(progress reports) and 4 (four) for poster presentations. If absolutely
needed, it will be allowed to increase the total number of pages, by 4 extra
pages. However, for each excess page the author will have to pay an
additional fee.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
Full Paper Submission: 15 th October 2001
Workshops and Tutorials Submission: 15th November 2001

VENUE
Ciudad Real is in Castilla-La Mancha, the Don Quixote's land. It is not easy
to categorize Castilla-La Mancha, for it is a region of great variety and
complexity. On the one hand, there is the ruddy red earth, the windmills,
and simple whitewashed villages of the province of Ciudad Real (which
encompasses most of the area commonly called La Mancha). But there are also
the strangely sculpted cliffs of Cuenca and Albacete, the hilly woodlands of
Guadalajara and the dark mystery and ancient cultures of Toledo. Ciudad Real
is one hour by car from Toledo, fifty minutes by train from Madrid, seventy
minutes by train from Crdoba and two hours by train from Sevilla.

Journal of AIS, volume 2, number 5
This month's paper is by James J. Jiang of Louisiana Tech University,
and Gary Klein and Morgan Shepherd both of the University of Colorado at
Colorado Springs. It is entitled The Materiality of Information System
Planning Maturity to Project Performance.
This article addresses two critical success factors that have been
examined in the past - project manager performance and IS planning
maturity. However, until now, each of these factors has been studied
independently of the other. This study proposes and empirically tests a
model that examines the relationships between project manager
performance and IS planning maturity and the relationship of both to
project success. The results indicate that IS planning maturity is
positively linked to project success and to project manager performance.
Furthermore, project outcome is also positively related to the
performance of the project manager.
The implication for practitioners is that the success of project
management is not dependent only on the IS development process but has
longer-term relationships to the IS planning process and its maturity.
Not only is the development process important, but its organizational
environment also plays an important role.
