Call for Papers for the AMCIS 2011 Mini Track
'Information Technology in Emerging and Transition Economies'
(part of the 'Global, International, and Cultural Issues in IS' track)
AMCIS - Americas Conference on Information Systems
Detroit, Michigan, USA, August 4-7, 2011
http://amcis2011.aisnet.org/
A considerable body of literature exists regarding the adoption of
information technology (IT) in developed economies. However, different
challenges exist for developing economies that warrant a dedicated
line of research. A broad group of developing countries, with low to
middle income per capita, are actively dedicated to economic
development and substantial reforms in order to advance their emerging
economies from the developing to the developed status. Transition
economies are the particular case of emerging economies comprising the
countries of the former eastern bloc and the countries that resulted
from the breakup of the Soviet Union, which within the last two
decades have abandoned communist style central planning systems for
free markets. Overall, developing economies play an increasingly
important role in the global economy, with IT being a crucial driving
force in this process. The objective of this mini-track is to
encourage more research in this topic by providing a forum for
interested authors to disseminate their research, compare results, and
exchange ideas.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Critical success factors, risks, and barriers for IT adoption in
developing economies
• IT management and governance issues in developing economies
• Cultural, economical, and social contexts/factors influencing IT in
developing economies
• IT investment evaluation in developing economies
• Country specific case studies, with specific reference to the
social and business conditions prevalent in developing economies
• The role of IT in developing economies in global supply chains
• IT off-shoring/outsourcing into developing economies
• E-government and e-democracy in developing economies

The diffusion of lightweight, powerful portable devices, also enriched with a
variety of sensing capabilities, is enabling new ways for users to communicate,
and is laying the foundation for the ubiquitous networking idea to become a
reality. Risen from the ashes of traditional MANETs, which failed to cope with
the variability of a network solely made up from mobile users, opportunistic
communications have recently stood out and gained a lot of research attention.
Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in a mobile
network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary contacts among
the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as well as
providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking research
community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in
the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions,
and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application
developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a
primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications
represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and
participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to
opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing
both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic
communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype
implementations and deployments.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Architectures and models for autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Advanced technologies for enabling autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Tools and techniques for designing, analysing and building autonomic and
opportunistic networks
* Scaling laws and fundamental limits in autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Performance modeling of autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Autonomic and opportunistic communication testbeds and measurements
* Algorithms, models, and architectures for opportunistic computing
* Mechanisms, algorithms and testbeds for service provisioning in autonomic
and opportunistic networks
* Algorithms, models, and architectures for content centric autonomic and
opportunistic networks
* Mobile social networking in autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Participatory and urban sensing in autonomic and opportunistic networks
* Resource management techniques applied to autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Context and social awareness in autonomic and opportunistic networks
* Routing, transport, and reliability issues in autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Techniques for data dissemination and replication in autonomic and
opportunistic networks
* Applications and middleware support for autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Mobility models and statistical analysis of mobility traces
* Trust, security, and reputation in autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Socio-economic models for autonomic and opportunistic communications
PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
--------------------------------
Papers should neither have been published elsewhere nor being currently under
review by another conference or journal. Manuscripts are limited to 6 pages,
single spacing, double column, and must strictly adhere to the template
format. Guidelines on paper submission and formatting are available at
http://cnd.iit.cnr.it/aoc2011/.
Accepted papers will appear in the symposium proceedings published by IEEE. At
least one author of each accepted paper is required to register and present
his/her work at the workshop. There will be no separate registration for
workshop, but one single registration will cover both conference and workshops
participation.

----------------------------------------------------------
Over the last years, the European Workshop on RFID Systems and
Technologies has become a central platform in Europe for personal
networking and information exchange in the field of RFID technologies
and applications.
While the networking of objects for the purpose of data collection and
distributed control is no longer a recent phenomenon, the sheer number
of things that are networked to information systems has dramatically
risen. Today, the Internet is increasingly extended to all kinds of
physical assets: product components, finished products, logistic units,
equipment, documents, vehicles, buildings and electronic meters as
well as embedded systems of all kind. Mature industries, like the energy
or automotive are in euphoric mood and accordingly, we see enormous
research and technological development activity: For instance, Auto-ID
technologies such as RFID are being increasingly combined with data
storage capacity and sensors or other communication devices that provide
real-time data such as position, temperature, pressure, vibrations etc.
These special-purpose computer systems are able to sense information
from the real world or perform actions upon it and are also able to
communicate with other networked computer systems.
The resultant integration into existing business processes and IT
infrastructures under the side condition of enabling an interaction
between intelligent objects and business applications within and between
enterprises in a generic, flexible and scalable manner is a considerable
challenge. At the same time, the economic potential is promising and
will also help enterprises to address completely new challenges such as
sustainability: Interacting with smart devices will ensure that
enterprises get correct, auditable trails for sustainability metrics.
Such systems can help businesses track carbon and other environmental
aspects. However, business-to-business integration solutions such as the
EPCglobal network or other bilateral approaches have to be developed
further in order to meet the supporting requirements.
The specific profile of this workshop is to examine both the technology
and business aspects:
- the latest achievements in technologies and systems for smart objects
- their integration into information systems and business processes
- and their business value.
Scientists and practitioners from the fields of electrical engineering,
computer science and information systems will find an excellent
opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary discussions, set up new
networks and exchange information on a professional level. In addition
to the workshop, an industrial exhibition presenting the latest
innovations will be held.
Donât miss the chance to attend this workshop!

*LOCATION*
Óbidos is a Medieval walled town where time has passed it by. Within the
extensive walls there are narrow cobbled streets, houses painted white
with blue or yellow trim, flower boxes and old lamp lights. There are
many churches and chapels among the houses. The castle is located at the
highest point. Once the wedding present of a queen, the preserved
medieval town of Óbidos and the surrounding land was always the property
of the queens of Portugal.Encircled by a ring of medieval walls and
crowned by the Moorish castle.Inside the walls, which at sunset take on
a golden coloring, one can sense a cheerful medieval ambience of winding
streets, old whitewashed houses bordered with blue or yellow, Manueline
embrasures and windows. Óbidos is located about 80 km north of Lisbon.
Besides its material heritage of the past, Óbidos, a melting pot of
historical tradition is still today one of the main jewels of the
country. More information about Óbidos,
http://bit.ly/obidos_information. Welcome to Óbidos!
Selected conference hotels are located inside the old fort walls.
Conference sessions will be organized along different municipal
buildings inside the medieval wall ring, allowing to participants to
enjoy the villa costumes.

*CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS*
"Cloud Computing Service and Deployment Models: Layers and
Management"
*Proposal Submission Deadline: January 31, 2011*
A book edited by Dr. Al Bento and Dr. Anil Aggarwal
University of Baltimore, USA
To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.igi-global.com <http://www.igi-global.com/>
*Introduction*
Cloud computing is an emerging discipline which is changing
the way corporate computing is and will be done in the
future. The National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) defines cloud computing as a "model for enabling
convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of
configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers,
storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly
provisioned and released with minimal management effort or
service provider interaction." The architecture of Cloud
Computing is comprised of four layers: Infrastructure as a
Service (comprised of servers, hypervisor, storage and
network), Platform as a Service (development environment
including DB, integration and development tools), Software
as a Service (readymade applications), and Business Process
as a Service (applications plus services). In addition there
are different types of clouds: private, public, hybrid and
community clouds, with different capabilities and
requirements. As with any new area, cloud computing raises
many conceptual, technical and managerial issues that need
to be addressed by both academicians and practitioners.
**
*Objective of the Book*
This book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks
and practical applications in the area. Chapters will be
written for professionals who want to improve their
understanding of cloud computing and address many of the
issues related to change management, security, management
and processing approaches related to cloud computing. A
key objective is to provide a systematic source of reference
for all aspects of cloud computing. Another key objective is
to understand the changes cloud computing will have on
organizations and management. A final objective is to study
the possible link between mobile computing (smartphones,
tablets, 4G) and cloud computing.
*Target Audience*
The target audience of this book is comprised of
professionals and researchers working in the field of
information processing in various disciplines, e.g.
administrative sciences and management, education, adult
education, sociology, computer science, and information
technology. Moreover, the book will provide insights and
support executives concerned with the bottom line of their
IT departments, and the potential impact of cloud computing
on organizations and management styles.
