RATIONALITY. Decision Making Support Systems (DMSS), have evolved or have been embedded, from classic DSS, EIS and ES/KBS, to or into Intelligent Systems, Web-DSS, OLAP&DW&DM systems, KMS and Enterprise Information and Decision Portals. All of them have offered organizational and individual benefits, such as improved organizational performance, improved decision quality, improved communication, enhanced mental models, amplified analytical skills of decision-makers, and reduced decision time frames. However, despite the availability of emergent IS&IT architectures in the market, successful DMSS are not immediate. Management and organizational barriers in addition to technological issues, must be overcome in order to have successful full implementations of DMSS. For this reason, we seek for articles that report scientific evidences of "Management and Organizational Issues for DMSS: Foundations, Study Cases and Learned Lessons". --------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. MISSION AND AIMS. This Special Issue's mission is to present the core and state of the art knowledge about the theory and application of management and organizational issues relevant to achieve successful implementations of Decision-Making Support Systems (DMSS) in organizations. The main aims are: (1) to generate a compendium of quality theoretical and applied papers on management and organizational issues in DMSS (2) to help diffuse scarce knowledge about effective methods and strategies for successfully designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating DMSS, and (3) to create an awareness among academicians and practitioners about the relevance of DMSS in the current complex and dynamic management environment. -------------------------------------------------------------------- III. TOPICS SOUGHT. Topics of interest include, but not limited to: * Project management of DMSS * DMSS implementation frameworks and models * DMSS development methodologies * Strategies for change-resistance management * Implementation of critical success factors * Lessons learned from failures or successful implementations of DMSS projects * Experiences in development of large-scale projects of DMSS. -------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. INSTRUCTIONS. The suggested length for each manuscript is 20-25 double-spaced typed pages, including graphs, tables, figures, and references. Original papers should be written to conform with the Information Resources Management Journal style guidelines document, which is available upon request. Papers will be evaluated using IRMJ procedures based on a double round blind review made by experts in the field. Submissions must not exceed five pages in camera-ready format. Submissions of unformatted papers are limited to 6000 words including footnotes, figure captions, tables, appendices, and bibliography. Each half-page of figures will be counted as 600 words. (Please note that for some papers five camera-ready pages may be considerably less than 6000 words in practice.) Overlengthy submissions will be rejected without review. Authors submitting unformatted papers must include a word count on their paper. Final versions of accepted papers will be required to conform strictly to the formatting requirements specified in the ECAI 2002 Style Guide. The review process All submissions will be subject to academic peer review by the ECAI 2002 Programme Committee under the chairmanship of the ECAI 2002 Programme Committee Chair. The ECAI 2002 Programme Committee Chair has final authority over the review process and all decisions relating to acceptance of papers. Review criteria include originality of ideas, technical soundness, significance of results, and quality of presentation. Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers will be mailed to the corresponding author by 22 April 2002. Awards The best paper of the conference, as selected by the ECAI 2002 Programme Committee, will receive a prize sponsored by Elsevier Science. The authors will also be invited to publish a longer version of the paper in the Artificial Intelligence journal. The authors of the 10 next best papers will all be invited to submit a long version of their paper to a special fast-review track of the Artificial Intelligence journal. Conference proceedings The conference proceedings will be published and distributed by IOS Press on paper and as a CD-ROM. The authors will be responsible for producing camera-ready copies of papers, conforming to the ECAI 2002 formatting guidelines, for inclusion in the proceedings. The deadline for receipt of the camera-ready copy is 10 May 2002. Note that at least one author of each accepted paper is required to attend the conference to present the paper. Support for Central and Eastern Europe ECAI 2002 is dedicated to supporting AI research in Central and Eastern Europe. A travel grant to attend the conference will be given to one author of each accepted paper from Central or Eastern Europe. Also, authors from Central and Eastern Europe are offered the possibility of pre-reviewing. Such papers should be clearly identified as "Application paper" and will be treated separately by the Program Committee. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Submission is a two-stage process. Authors are first asked to submit a summary of their research paper by March 1st, 2002, by sending it to stairs(a)dis.uniroma1.it, including the title, the names of all authors with full affiliations and email addresses, the contact author, and an abstract of the paper (maximum 200 words), plus keywords drawn from the above list of topics (plus other keywords if appropriate). Please do not forget to add "Application paper" when relevant. The full paper should be sent electronically to the same address by March 6th, 2002, in either PostScript or PDF format (the latter being highly preferred). Free services to convert a number of widely used file formats to PDF are available at http://createpdf.adobe.com/ and at http://wheel.compose.cs.cmu.edu:8001/cgi-bin/browse. If electronic submission is problematic, please contact both PC co-chairs by February 15 (addresses are below). It is highly recommended to submit papers using the final camera-ready formatting style (including authors and affiliations on the first page). Submissions must not exceed six pages in camera-ready format, or 10 pages in plain article format (such as the Springer LNCS format). Overlength submissions will be rejected without review. Guidelines on the format of submissions and style files will be available on the STAIRS'02 webpage http://stairs2002.univ-lyon1.fr/ The final version of accepted papers will be required to conform strictly to these guidelines, and will be allocated six pages in the proceedings. Papers received after March 6th 2002 (23:59 CET) will not be reviewed. Notification of receipt of full papers will be emailed to the corresponding author soon after receipt. REVIEW PROCESS Papers should address significant research works undertaken by the authors. At least one of the authors must be a PhD student, or a person holding a PhD for less than a year. Preference will be given to papers whose authors are all in such condition. All submissions will be subject to academic peer review by the STAIRS'2002 Program Committee. Each paper will be assigned at least two reviewers. Review criteria include originality of ideas, technical soundness, significance of results, and quality of presentation. Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers will be emailed to the corresponding author by April 19, 2002. CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS The conference proceedings will be published and distributed by IOS Press. The authors will be responsible for producing camera-ready copies of papers, conforming to the STAIRS'2002 formatting guidelines, for inclusion in the proceedings. The deadline for receipt of the camera-ready copy is May 6, 2002. For each accepted paper, at least one author, and most preferably one of the beginner researchers involved in the work, is required to attend the conference to present the paper. AWARDS At least one best paper of the conference will be selected by the STAIRS'2002 Program Committee, and announced during the Gala Dinner on the evening of July the 22nd. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS: Students are invited to apply to volunteer at CSCW 2002. In exchange for 20 hours of volunteer work, students will receive complimentary conference registration and an invitation to the conference reception. The number of student volunteer positions will be limited. Interested students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the 2001-2002 school year should apply using the form on the conference website as soon as possible. RESEARCH PAPERS: Papers should present original, unpublished research on technological mediation of activities affecting groups of people. Potential areas of interest include theory, methodology, empirical investigations, architectures, prototypes and experiences related to the development, deployment and use of computer systems supporting all aspects of shared activities, including, but not limited to, activities at work, in the home, in education, and the arts. Papers should be no longer than 10 pages, including the abstract, all figures and references. VIDEOS: Videos are a great way to present work that involves dynamic interaction, ranging from demonstrations of new systems to complex aspects of group communication and work practice. Potential topics include, but are not limited to demonstrations of innovative research prototypes; demonstrations (but not marketing) of innovative aspects of commercial systems; studies of work practice that have implications for CSCW; retrospective collections of significant CSCW fields of work; and visions of future technologies. INTERACTIVE POSTERS: Interactive Posters provide an opportunity for researchers to present work in a more open format where authors interact directly with groups of conference attendees. We especially encourage submission of late-breaking and preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a full paper, innovative ideas not yet validated through user studies, student research, and other research best presented in this open format. Interactive Poster submissions should include a poster abstract of no longer than 2 pages, including all figures and references. DEMONSTRATIONS: Demonstrations allow conference participants to view novel or noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with those who created them, and perhaps to try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include applications, technologies, research prototypes and products. This forum is not an opportunity for marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the differentiating and novel contributions of the system. Demo proposals should be a maximum of 4 pages. PANELS: Panels should examine innovative, provocative, controversial, or late-breaking issues. The best panels are often structured as a debate with an opportunity for audience participation. We also welcome novel suggestions of topics or formats such as impromptu design by a panel or comparative empirical analyses by expert panelists who have divergent perspectives. We are open to innovative formats including live demonstrations and/or technology competitions. Panel proposals should be no longer than 4 pages. TUTORIALS: Tutorials should be designed to give participants the opportunity to learn about CSCW concepts and techniques in intensive sessions. Proposals are solicited for half-day and full day tutorials. Tutorial proposals should be no longer than 5 pages. WORKSHOPS: Workshops provide an opportunity to discuss and explore emerging areas of CSCW research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners.
