Subject: CFP-Information Technology and Management Special Issue on Online Auctions
Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 22:28:11 -0400
From: Ravi Bapna <RBapna(a)SBA.UCONN.EDU>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
Online auctions are now an important component of the portfolio of
mercantile processes that are transforming the economy from traditionally
hierarchical to market oriented structures. In the absence of spatial,
temporal and geographic constraints these mechanisms provide many benefits
to both buyers and sellers. It can be contended that they are amongst the
few market-structures that stand tall in the e-commerce rubble.
A broad and deep body of economics literature exists that investigates the
theoretical properties of traditional auctions. Most of the findings are
either analytically or experimentally derived. The proliferation of online
auctions also presents a unique opportunity to the interested researcher who
can derive new insights by collecting empirical data using automated
data-collection agents, as well as for field experimentation. This, along
with significant differences in the cost structures, to both buyers and
sellers, participating in online auctions, has resulted in a need to revisit
much of the existing theory. Additionally, an exciting area of emerging
research has resulted from the generation of new auction designs that
capitalize on access to computing resources.
We invite work that is well-versed with the existing body of literature, and
critically, sheds new light on the impact of the Internet on auction theory.
This could be achieved using a wide canvas of methodologies, namely
analytical, experimental, empirical, computational or any combination of
these.
* Market design
* Multi-dimensional auctions with price as not the only
attribute
* Multi-unit auctions and their combinatorial dynamics
* Examination of the discrete and sequential nature of the
Internet auctions
* Reverse auctions for contracting and procurement
* Combinational auctions for complementary goods
* Auctions markets for allocating knowledge resources within
firms
* Auctions v. posted price mechanisms
* Consumer bidding strategies
* Challenging the notion of the rational bidder, exploring
consumer biases
* Opportunism, trust and reputation in online auctions
* Simulation techniques for understanding online auction
markets
* Preventing collusive, predatory, and entry-deterring
behavior
* Auctions and the efficiency of the supply chain, lot sizing

Die seit 1998 bestehende Tagungsreihe "Modellierung" hat es sich zum
Ziel gesetzt, ein Forum für den interdisziplinären Austausch von
Ansätzen und Erfahrungen im Bereich der Modellierung zu bieten. Da in

http://www.modellierung2002.de/gestaltungshinweise.pdf.

CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL ISSUE OF JOURNAL OF GLOBAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT
(To be published in July 2002, Volume 5, Number 3)
THEME: GLOBALIZATION AND THE EMERGENCE OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 15, 2001
Guest Editor: Hamid Nemati
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, 440 Bryan Building, P.O.
Box 26165
Greensboro, NC 27402, USA Tel: (336) 334-4993, Email: nemati(a)uncg.edu
* Further details about this call can be found at:
http://elvis.uncg.edu/bae/hrnemati/gkmcall.htm
Globalization is the most significant development in the world economy
over the last decade. Dramatic advances in communications and
transportation, has speeded the flow and production of goods and/or
services, created increasing demand for these products, and eased the
task of managing globally dispersed assets. These factors have all
combined to create highly competitive global markets in which change is
rapid and companies need to be quick and flexible, but able to retain
benefits of both economies of scale and scope. It is in this environment
that the concept of knowledge management (KM) has arisen. How global
organizations become aware of their intellectual resources (knowledge)
and what programs they implement in order to apply and/or distribute
this knowledge, to increase competitiveness, have become a key component
in understanding how global companies can leverage their knowledge
generating capabilities in creating new opportunities in global markets.
KM is a discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying,
managing, and sharing all of an enterprise's information assets. KM
issues include developing, implementing, and maintaining the appropriate
organizational, cultural and technical infrastructures to enable
knowledge creation, sharing, and dissemination.
This special issue of JGITM will feature scholarly manuscripts that
explore a wide range of issues addressing the global aspects of KM.
Papers ranging from conceptual frameworks to case studies and empirical
research are encouraged. Topics may include but are not limited to:
Research frameworks, methods, methodologies, architectures, and
infrastructure issues in design, implementation and maintenance of
global knowledge management systems and initiatives; issues in
identifying and recording knowledge in a global setting; design of
processes to share, use and protect knowledge globally; issues
surrounding the articulation and communication of the purpose and the
nature of KM and connecting it to other strategic and operational
initiative and activities of the organization in a global context; role
and impact of KM on process improvement in organizations in a global
setting; the use of specific technologies, tools and techniques in
managing (including identifying, capturing, structuring, storing,
refining, personalizing, distributing, or applying) information and
knowledge in a global setting; cultural and organizational issues in
adoption and acceptance of KM systems and initiatives; the role of
E-commerce in GKM

Over the past 20 years, the field of information systems has grown
dramatically in theoretical diversity and global reach. This growth is
reflected in the language and rhetorical arguments that policy-makers
and organizational stakeholders use when they talk about their IT
plans. As IT penetrates further into organizational and global life, it
becomes ever more important to articulate assumptions embedded in
the discourse about it. This will help to clarify the complex and yet
conceptually improvised or pasted-up worldview that becomes
embodied in systems. The assumptions point to particular domains of
discourse. The discourse sets up conventions and boundaries. It thus
shapes what can or cannot legitimately be talked about, researched,
addressed, or solved within the scope of IT. There are many ways of
analyzing and making visible the meaning and consequences of
organizational discourse: for example, hermeneutics, discourse
analysis, conversation analysis, speech-act analysis, language-action
perspective, cognitive mapping, and semiotics, amongst others.
We solicit research papers in two key areas:
1. Global and regional discourses about technology. How is policy
framed, how are budgets justified, what are perceived as the key
needs and preconditions for technology at the national or regional
level? This includes developing countries, global corporations and
national policy arguments.
2. Discourses within organizations already sophisticated in
technology use. What are the issues, assumptions and goals implied
in IT globalization, scope expansion and enterprise deployment, or
innovations such as e-commerce and knowledge management?
We particularly welcome papers that directly analyze specific
language from actual case environments or texts. This analysis can
come from any of the methods described above, or others. The idea is
to paint a clear picture of language-in-action and how it works to
influence the direction of IT in the world and in organizations.
Possible topics include:
* Analyses of the fit of system development models to organizational
rhetoric
* Studies of texts that disclose a view of technology
* Theoretical approaches to the study of organizational discourse
* Distinctions implied in explanations of work and business models
* The use of metaphors in computing, planning and information
systems development
* Discourse analysis of participants in IS projects
* How the language of technology is used to set social agendas
* Studies of communication genres
* Ethnographic semantics of IT planning, development and evaluation
* Schemes of representation
* Critical analyses of discourses
* Communicative and strategic action studies
* Philosophical issues of language and representation
Submitted papers must not have been previously presented or
published and must not be under consideration for presentation or
publication elsewhere.
Details of the programme committee can be found on the conference
website.
