TRACK DESCRIPTION:
Educating IT professionals concerning Global issues is becoming
increasingly important. Domestic firms are doing more global outsourcing
and using immigration more often to fill IT positions. Moreover, inside
MNEs, global software teams are the norm.
On the other hand, teaching global issues is very difficult. So far, there
are no textbooks and few case or reading texts available. The material is
highly dynamic because the IT world is constantly changing as well as the
global environment. It is therefore, very important for IT Educators to
share teaching practices and materials with each other.
This track focuses on issues concerning the delivery of Global IT education
to students at all levels and in every type of institution. It also
provides an avenue to discuss many issues related to this expanding
field. Papers in this track can be research oriented but best practices,
international case projects and other pedagogical material are also
welcomed. Panels and workshops are highly encouraged.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS
Papers (completed or in-progress: about 20 double spaced pages), extended
astracts (completed or in-progress research: about 4-6 pages), panel and
workshop proposals (2-4 pages) dealing with (but not limited to) the
following topics are invited. Please mention the name of this track on the
cover page.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
Global IT education: What is our theoretical foundation?
GIT Curriculum Models: How do we integrate Global IT material into our
programs
Design, implementation, and assessment of GIT curricula within programs
Global IT course curriculum issues - what to cover, when?
Global IT Education: Best Practices, Solutions to global IT education
challenges
Case stories about teaching success or lessons learned from failures.
Challenging and insightful global IT case studies for use in classes
Corporate IT education issues
Comparative studies (different teaching methods, delivery modes,
geographics)
Customizing Global IT curriculum or course material to the local
situations Diffusion of Internet-based education in Developing countries
Reviews of previous global IT literature
OTHER TRACKS: Please note that you may also submit to other Global IT
tracks. Just note the name of the appropriate track on the cover (if no
such track exists or you do not know the track name, simply state so on the
cover page). In general, Global IT Management topics include (but are not
limited to):
IT in various countries and regions (e.g., Europe, Asia, Africa, Arab
countries, North America, South & Central America, Australia); Development,
evaluation & management of Global Information Systems (GIS); Electronic
commerce; Internet and Web related issues; IT in multinational companies;

Apologies for any duplicates you may receive...
This is a reminder that abstracts for the IFIP WG 8.2 OASIS workshop are due
on 30 September.
The IFIP 8.2 Working Group on Information Systems in Organizations
Call for participation
Organizations and Society in Information Systems (OASIS) 2001 Workshop
Wildcatter Room, Fairmont New Orleans Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
9 AM - 3:30 PM Sunday 16 December 2001
Submission due date: 30 September 2001
The OASIS research workshop is open to all interested scholars and
professionals who are researching in the areas of organizations,
information systems and society. We invite you to present your
research-in-progress at the OASIS workshop (or just come to hear the
discussions). Along with members and friends of IFIP WG 8.2, we
welcome researchers new to, or interested in, intensive research in
IS.
Come and get to know our members and their research interests,
issues, and methodologies in a relaxed and supportive setting. The
unique and collegial character of WG 8.2 ensures constructive,
helpful and high quality feedback. OASIS is a particularly useful
forum for those just embarking on their research who need
constructive advice on research approaches.
Submissions: To present, please submit a 500-word abstract of your
work to the co-chairs by 30 September 2001. We anticipate that
submitters will be given about 10-15 minutes to present their work to
the assembled group, which is followed by 5-10 minutes for questions
from the audience. The exact timing and review process will depend on
the number of abstracts received. We will accept late submissions on
a space-available basis. Proposals will be copied for distribution at
the workshop. Authors submitting proposals must grant the IFIP WG 8.2
the right to copy and distribute them to workshop attendees, but
retain all other copyrights.
Registration: There will be a nominal registration fee for the
workshop (probably on the order of US$25) to cover the cost of coffee
breaks, audio-visual equipment and copying. All attendees and
presenters will be required to register. We hope to provide
pre-registration (at a discount) as well as registration at the door
in cash (receipts will be provided). Details will be provided on the
IFIP WG 8.2 Website (http://www.ifipwg82.org) when they are available
(check back this fall).
Time and place: The workshop will be held in the Wildcatter Room of
the ICIS 2001 Conference Hotel, the Fairmont New Orleans, in New
Orleans, Louisiana, United States from 9 AM-3:30 PM on Sunday 16
December 2001, immediately prior to the ICIS 2001 conference.
IFIP WG 8.2 Business Meeting: All workshop attendees and anyone
interested in WG 8.2 are encouraged to attend the WG business meeting
that will follow the workshop at 4 PM. At the business meeting, we
will discuss future workshops and working conferences, elect new
members to the working group and conduct other business.
Please email any questions regarding this workshop to the Co-Chairs.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM SIGPLAN 2002 Conference on
Programming Language Design and Implementation (PLDI)
Berlin, Germany, June 17 - 19, 2002
Sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN in cooperation with ACM SIGSOFT
http://www.sable.mcgill.ca/~hendren/PLDI2002/
======================================================================
IMPORTANT DATES
---------------
- Submission deadline: Friday, November 16, 2001, 8:00 pm EST (20:00)
- Notification: Friday, February 1, 2002
- Camera Ready Deadline: Monday, April 8, 2002
IMPORTANT
---------
As for PLDI 2001, full papers are required, not extended abstracts!
Introduction
------------
PLDI is a forum where researchers, developers, educators, and
practitioners can exchange information on the latest practical and
experimental work in the design and implementation of programming
languages. The PLDI conference seeks original research papers that
focus on practical issues in the design, development, implementation
and use of programming languages. Emphasis is placed on novel language
designs, innovative and creative approaches to compile-time and
run-time technology, and results from experimental studies of actual
implementations.
Papers are solicited on, but not limited to, these topics:
- design and processing of special- - program optimizations and
purpose languages, e.g., query, transformations
command, and domain-specific - interactions between compilers
- implementations of language features and architectures
- language support for security - software support tools
and safety - storage management techniques
- compiler construction - techniques for embedded
- program representations and mobile code
- program analysis - compilation for distributed,
- dynamic compilation and optimization heterogeneous systems
techniques - languages and compilers
for parallel computing
Prospective authors should submit a paper through the PLDI web site by
Friday, November 16, 2001 at 8:00 PM EST (20:00). In keeping with the
convention established in the last few years, the deadline is firm and
no extensions will be given.
Papers must be formatted according the ACM proceedings format and
should be no longer than 10 pages in this format. Templates for ACM
format are available for Word Perfect, Microsoft Word and Latex and
are located at http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html. You
can also use the ACM "old Latex format" which can be found at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/PUBFORM.STY.
Web-based electronic submission is required. Submissions should be in
PDF (preferably) or Postscript that is interpretable by Ghostscript
and printable on US Letter and A4 sized paper. Those individuals for
which these requirements are a hardship should contact the program
chair.
Papers that exceed the length requirement or are late will be rejected
by the program chair. Papers already being reviewed by another
conference are not eligible; if a closely related paper has been
submitted to a journal, the authors must notify the program chair.
Paper evaluation
----------------
The program committee will evaluate the technical contribution of each
submission as well as its general accessibility to the PLDI audience.
Papers will be judged on significance, originality, relevance,
correctness, and clarity. The paper must be organized so that it is
easily understood by an audience with varied expertise. The paper
should clearly identify what has been accomplished, why it is
significant, and how it compares with previous work.
Notification and deadline for final version of accepted papers
--------------------------------------------------------------
Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by February 1,
2002. Full versions of accepted papers must be formatted to ACM
conventions. A camera-ready copy and an electronic version must be
received by ACM no later than April 8, 2002. Authors of accepted
papers must sign a copyright release form.
Proceedings
-----------
Proceedings will be distributed at the conference and will appear as
an issue of SIGPLAN Notices. Papers published in the proceedings are
eligible for publication in refereed ACM publications at the
discretion of the editors.
Proposals for co-located workshops
----------------------------------
Proposals for co-located workshops to be held before and after the
conference are also solicited; proposals for other events such as
birds-of-a-feather sessions will be considered, too. Prospective
organizers should contact the general chair.

Subject: Call for Papers - E Journal of IS in Developing Countries
Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 17:48:02 +0800
From: Robert Davison <isrobert(a)IS.CITYU.EDU.HK>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
The Electronic Journal on Information Systems in Developing Countries
(EJISDC) strives to become the foremost international forum for
practitioners, teachers, researchers and policy makers to share their
knowledge and experience in the design, development, implementation,
management and evaluation of information systems and technologies in
developing countries.
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit their manuscripts to the
editors for publication in EJISDC. Research papers are peer-reviewed. Other
forms of submission are also welcome, such as position papers, commentaries
and book reviews.
The Journal will focus on information technologies and practices relevant in
the context concerned rather than on any accepted norms that might be
prevalent in developed countries. In acknowledging that the digital divide
is not defined by national borders alone, EJISDC is also interested in
issues surrounding information systems among less privileged indigenous
communities within otherwise developed countries. Examples are Native
Americans, the aboriginal populations of Australia and the Maoris of New
Zealand.
Topics of interest are as wide and diverse as the audience that we address.
However, certain issues relating to ICTs in developing countries sit at the
forefront of system planning and development activities and contributions
relating to these are especially sought as it believed that they will have
an immediate interest among a wide audience. Such topics are:
Internet usage
Diffusing access
Internet Service Provider management issues
Maximising the use of limited resources
Adapting technologies to local conditions
Evolution of the Internet
Internet policies and regulations
National internet policies
IT in Development Practice
Technology transfer in Development practice
Sustainability in Development applications
Measuring the social value of IT
Impacts of Telecentres
Understanding the relationship between IT spending and benefits
Societal implications of IT implementation

Research Practice in IT in Development
Theory building for IT in Development
Bibliographic analyses of IT issues in Development
Research relevance and impacts
Methodologies for IT research in Development; action research, ethnography,
phenomenological and interpretative approaches
Applications of IT in Rural Areas
Spreading telecommunications to rural and remote communities
Supporting rural economies
Managing Telecentres
Health care delivery in rural and remote areas
Distance education for rural learning
Supporting rural commerce electronically
Electronic governance for rural communities
Education in IT

Manuscripts are invited covering research, case studies or commentaries on
the above topics, or an any other topic considered relevant to the Journal's
theme. Comparative analyses between the developed and developing world are
encouraged. Send your submissions to any of the editors. Please also explain
in a covering letter why you believe your submission is appropriate for the
journal, and how it will be valuable reading for the journal's readers.
Mauscripts will only be accepted electronically. They should be sent as
files attached to an email to the Editor-in-Chief, Robert Davison, at:
