TRACK DESCRIPTION:
With the advent of the Internet and the WWW, geographic distance is no
longer an obstacle to communicate efficiently and effectively with business
associates, customers, friends, and family across the globe. Of course, a
web page and networked computers will not guarantee secure, effective, and
fast communication. Sound business principles still apply. Further, global
electronic communication and commerce open a new set of technical and social
challenges. As more and more people become connected to the web,
researchers need to focus attention on the potential opportunities and
obstacles to building secure websites that foster communication and support
electronic workflow transactions (for those sites intended to conduct
business). Researchers also need to pay attention to emerging global
businesses to identify trends and directions special to them. This mini
track provides a forum for in-depth research cases that explore the
potential of global electronic commerce, technological issues involved in
developing global websites, special issues surrounding emerging global
businesses, and localization issues based on doing business in different
cultures. We especially encourage papers that potentially contribute to
theory, based on real-world organizational experiences. We identify cases
as our preferred research methodology because of their power to describe the
world and prescribe recommendations based on in-depth analysis of businesses
in a real-world context. The main goal of our mini-track is to address the
ever-widening gap between IS theory and practice. The explosion of global
electronic commerce and website development are two new phenomena in the
global arena with little or no theory development to predict or even
describe what is happening in the world.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS
Papers (completed or in-progress: about 20 double spaced pages), extended
abstracts (completed or in-progress research: about 4-6 pages), panel and
workshop proposals (2-4 pages) dealing with (but not limited to) the
following topics are invited. Please mention the name of this track on the
cover page.
µ Potential obstacles to building secure global websites
µ Emerging global businesses trends and directions
µ Obstacles to conducting effective global electronic commerce
µ Special technological issues involved in conducting global business
µ Strategic planning and execution surrounding global electronic
commerce µ Localization issues and obstacles surrounding global
electronic commerce µ Dealing with the double-byte problem when doing
business in Asia µ Currency exchange issues surrounding global
electronic commerce
OTHER TRACKS: Please note that you may also submit to other Global IT
tracks. Just note the name of the appropriate track on the cover (if no
such track exists or you do not know the track name, simply state so on the
cover page). In general, Global IT Management topics include (but are not
limited to):

CALL FOR PAPERS
for a Special Issue on
E-BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT
-----------------------------------
BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT JOURNAL
www.emeraldinsight.com/bpmj.htm
E-business is transforming business processes and strategy. To succeed in
the
new economy, organizations must integrate business, technology and processes
not
only within the enterprise but also across extended enterprises. Process
integration is the key for the development of an effective e-business
infrastructure.
Integration involves not only implementing ERP systems and ensuring they
communicate or
interface with legacy systems, but also integrating Supply Chain Management,
Customer Relationship Management, Product Lifecycle Management,
e-procurement and e-marketplaces
with legacy and ERP systems, and making them available over the Web to
foster cooperation
and collaboration across the entire value chain.
Papers are invited for a special edition of the Business Process Management
Journal
(BPMJ) on E-Business Process Management. The aim is to publish high
quality original
work highlighting issues, problems and potential solutions in e-business
process management. Submissions should be focused on process-related issues.
They should highlight the innovation
of e-business processes in comparison with 'traditional' business process
management. Research papers that employ any of the three main approaches --
technical, analytical or empirical (including case studies and experience
reports) -- are welcome.
Contributed papers may deal with, but are not limited to:
Models, methodologies, tools and techniques for e-business process
management and enterprise integration
Modeling e-business processes
Workflow-based e-business process management
Design of architectures and collaborative supply chain processes for
e-business
Design of e-procurement, e-marketplace, and CRM processes for e-business
Issues, challenges and solutions in e-business and enterprise integration
Assessing quality of e-business process models
Effect of e-business process change on inter-enterprise relationships
Processes for product life-cycle management, intelligent manufacturing,
and mobile and pervasive computing
Impact of culture on e-business process managenment
A 300-word proposal should be sent, for guidance on appropriateness, to any
of the three guest editors by e-mail. Closing date for receipt of proposals
is March 15, 2002.
Full papers should be 3000-5000 words in length, single-spaced, full
justified, and in A4 Word format submitted electronically to any of the
guest editors by June 1, 2002. All contributions will be subjected to a
rigorous blind review by at least two experts. Full papers, following the
BPMJ guidelines <http://www.emeraldinsight.com/bpmj.htm>, should be
submitted as two Word file attachments. File 1 - contains a title page
giving the name(s) and full address(es) of the
author(s), the title of the paper, its word count (maximum 5000 words), 5
keywords, and an abstract of 200 words. File 2 - contains the title of the
paper, 5 keywords, a 200-word abstract, and the full body of the paper. Any
information that reveals the identity of the author(s) should be removed.
Guest Editors for the Special Issue:
- Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, fnah(a)unl.edu
- Michael Rosemann, Queensland University of Technology,
m.rosemann(a)qut.edu.au
- Edward Watson, SAP America, edward.watson(a)sap.com
Best regards,
Michael

Call for Papers
International Workshop
on Distributed Event-Based Systems
(DEBS'02)
http://www.gkec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/rebeca/debs/
July 2nd and 3rd, 2002
Vienna, Austria
In Conjunction with:
The 22nd International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems
(ICDCS-2002 )
SCOPE
Research on event notification services, event-based and publish /
subcribe systems has recently gained increased attention. It has been
recognized that loosely coupled asynchronous communication mechanisms
are necessary to build complex distributed systems. While comparable
mechanisms are already used in existing products such as ERP,
application servers and databases, event services have been
incorporated into major middleware platforms, including CORBA, J2EE,
and COM+.
Although these services provide some basic functionality, there are
still many open problems, ranging from design and integration to
scalability issues. Technical solutions that increase scalability,
such as event filtering and composition mechanisms, must be backed
with engineering solutions providing models of coordination, programming
abstractions, usage patterns, and administrative support.
Furthermore, robust enterprise solutions will be integrated with
legacy systems in heterogeneous environments, raising data management
and security issues. Future application scenarios, such as web-based
services and support for mobility, will stress all of these topics.
Research on event-based systems is dispersed among different areas of
computer science (software engineering, programming languages,
distributed systems, data management, networking, etc.), and
event-based concepts are applied in commercial software. This workshop
aims at bringing together people from these disciplines in order to
present the state of the art, current research and to develop a joint
vision on future design, engineering and applications of distributed
event-based systems.
DEBS'02 aims to gather participants from academia and industry that
work in areas related to event-based systems. This workshop will
provide a forum to meet and discuss technical issues of distributed
event-based systems, their integration with existing services, and the
problems related to engineering event-based systems.
Suggested topics for research and position papers include, but are not
limited to:
* Taxonomies to characterize event-based systems
* Event models (e.g. representations, subscription languages)
* Functionality and APIs of event services and publish / subscribe
systems
* Design, architecture, and engineering of event-based applications
* Programming language support and integration (e.g. typing,
abstractions)
* Algorithms for distributed event processing
(e.g. filtering, routing, composition, ordering)
* Push-based event dissemination mechanisms
* Event notification protocols and delivery mechanisms
* Efficient use of ip-multicast and publish/subscribe communication
techniques
* Real-time distributed event systems
* Performance evaluation and scalability analysis
* Integration with standard middleware (e.g. CORBA, J2EE, COM+)
* Integration with databases and storage systems (e.g. active
database, transactions processing systems, querying event logs)
* Fault-tolerant event distribution
* Security
* Quality of service and its specification
* Support of mobile devices (e.g. temporarily connected, limited
memory/communication bandwidth)
* Case studies of challenging applications and requirement
analysis
