This raises many issues when one wants to exploit this information especially when co-operative actions are needed between various sources of data/documents. This international Workshop on Multimedia Data and Document Engineering is aimed to bring together researchers in all aspects of multimedia and document engineering. We also welcome Ph.D. students and young researchers that have delivered their dissertation (degree, master or Ph.D). Research and experience papers are solicited in, but not limited to, the following topics: Models and languages for documents and semi-structured data - Conceptual structures for documents - Semantics modeling - Query languages for Web databases - Content description definition languages Data/Document Engineering - Meta-data Management - Interoperability issues - Techniques for integrating heterogeneous data/documents - Semantic retrieval - Multimedia indexing and retrieval - Query processing and optimization - Document database system - Mining from XML documents Applications in - Digital Libraries - E-commerce - Documents and mobile networks - Co-operative systems - Data Warehouses INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (around 6 pages long) by May 2, 2001. Each extended abstract should have an extra cover page with name, title, and address (including e-mail address) of the contact author and an abstract of no more than 200 words. In order to make this vision a reality for the Web, supporting standards, technologies and policies must be designed to enable machines to make more sense of the Web, with the result of making the Web more useful for humans. Facilities and technologies to put machine-understandable data on the Web are rapidly becoming a high priority for many communities. For the Web to scale, programs must be able to share and process data even when these programs have been designed totally independently. The Web can reach its full potential only if it becomes a place where data can be shared and processed by automated tools as well as by people. On the technology side, Web-enabled languages and technologies are being developed (e.g. RDF-Schema, DAML+OIL, DAML-Rules, Rule-ML), schema and ontology integration techniques are being examined and refined and Web Services Integration Standards are being defined (e.g. UDDI, JINI). The success of the Semantic Web will depend on a widespread adoption of these technologies. The workshop is dedicated to groups willing to contribute to the Semantic Web. Its expected outcome is a better common knowledge and synergy, of those wishing to develop new exciting basic technology and applications for the Semantic Web. It should guide the future coalitions for enabling future standard to be adopted worldwide. We thus solicit contributions to the foregoing Semantic Web infrastructure and content as well as contributions about innovative applications taking advantage of this infrastructure. These application proposals are also expected to provide requirements for the core technology developers and standardization efforts. Reengineering steht für alle Prozesse, deren Ziel die qualitative Verbesserung und die Aufbereitung von Software ist. Mit diesem Workshop sollen Arbeitsgruppen aus der Informatik und der Wirtschaftsinformatik, die sich mit Softwareaufbereitung im weitesten Sinne befassen, zu einer weiteren Bestandsaufnahme über die Reengineering-Aktivitäten im deutschsprachigen Raum und zur Entdeckung von Kooperationsmöglichkeiten zusammengeführt werden. The guest editor for this special issue will be Hsinchun Chen of The University of Arizona. Information retrieval and data mining are among the research areas that have experienced significant progress over the past few years. Overwhelming acceptance of the Internet as a primary means for information and data delivery has created unique opportunities and challenges for researchers working in these two fields. The richness of the webs multimedia content, the reach and timeliness of web-based publication, the increasing proliferation of eCommerce activities, and the potential for wireless web delivery have generated many interesting research problems. Technical, organizational, and social research approaches are all needed to address these research issues. Papers reporting novel information retrieval, data mining, visualization, and analysis techniques, applications, and case studies that use Internet as a primary means for delivery are sought. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: -Text and data mining on the web -Web visualization, web intelligence, and web agents -Information organization and management on the web -Multilingual and multimedia issues on the web -Wireless web retrieval and visualization -Web-based usability and HCI studies -Web-based analysis for eCommerce applications Inquiries can be made to the guest editor at hchen(a)bpa.arizona.edu. Time will be arranged during the conference for poster authors to discuss their work directly with interested participants. Posters will be selected based on quality and relevance, subject to available space. The authors will be informed of the dimensions of the available exposition space. Posters will be on display during the entire conference. GUIDELINES FOR POSTER PROPOSALS: A proposal should be sent by mail as a HTML file and should contain the following items: - The title - The name of the presenter(s) - The abstract - a brief description (up to 500) of the presented material. - References - Please give information for further reading (an optional URL). Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for possible publication in JEUC. The journal publishes empirical and theoretical research concerned with all aspects of end user computing including development, utilization, and management. JEUC also invites case studies, editorials, book reviews, software reviews, practitioner articles for consideration for the Industry and Practice section of the journal. Submitted pieces for this section should not exceed 10 double-spaced typed pages. Review process: To ensure the high quality of published material, JEUC utilizes a group of experts to review submitted manuscripts. Upon receipt of the manuscript, two reviewers are selected from the Editorial Review Board of the Journal. The selection is based upon the particular area of expertise of the reviewers, matched to the subject matter of the submission. An additional ad-hoc reviewer is also selected to review the manuscript. Each submission is, therefore, blind reviewed by at least three reviewers. Revised manuscripts are reviewed by an associate editor and finally by the editor. Return of a manuscript to the author(s) for revision does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript for publication but it is a step in the right direction.
