A range of influences has encouraged the increasing uptake
of large application software packages, which already
account for a substantial portion of the world-installed
base of application software. Most software maintenance
research to date has largely addressed the user organisation
perspective and custom, in-house developed applications
(see shaded box in figure at web site below).
In this special issue we seek to address maintenance issues
in relation to packaged software. Also, as suggested in the
figure, we perceive many important issues in relation to
packaged and hybrid (combination of package and custom)
software that are of relevance to stakeholders other than
the user organisation (e.g. software vendors, consultants,
society). In example, software vendors must be acutely aware
of the maintenance requirements of their products, which are
installed across hundreds or, thousands of customer
organisations. Also, maintenance costs may be born by the vendor,
the customer, or a third party. Factors that influence the
incidence of these costs and related activities and responsibilities
are of keen interest. How does package maintenance differ from
custom software maintenance? To what extent are package maintenance
concepts generic and extensible beyond a particular vendor's
product? What differences in the roles and expertise of the
maintenance team do these dissimilarities suggest? What factors
determine the amount of in-house maintenance required of packaged
software and hybrid solutions?
Articles submitted to this special section will be reviewed
in accordance with JSME editorial policy

Submissions should be submitted electronically as a Word file

Object-Oriented Modeling
In conjunction with MESM2001, there will be a special session on
Object-Oriented Modeling. The Call-for-papers for this session is
included
below.
OBJECTIVE:
The aim of this technical session is to bring together experts who have a
common interest in understanding and solving problems using
Object-Oriented Modeling. Modeling has become more and more important in
developing software systems. Modeling helps to understand, explain, predict,
and reason on the software systems. Object-Oriented modeling has gained a
lot of interest in the last years and has proven to be very useful in the
analysis and design of complex software systems. The approaches and
background theories for
object modeling in application areas may differ, but they all have one
goal, namely to help develop software of good quality. In this session the
interest is focused on modeling using Object Technology and use of models in
systems of various kinds.
TOPICS:
Scientific or technical papers of high quality are sought on topics
including, but not limited to the following. The highest priority will be
given to papers, which are strongly related to different aspects of
object-oriented modeling.
- Modeling and requirements specification
- Languages, tools and methods for modeling
- Relationships between modeling and software engineering processes
- Modeling for the design of object-oriented databases
- Object-oriented modeling vs. other modeling methodologies:
similarities and differences
- Design and use of design patterns, frameworks, and components
- UML (papers proposing simplifications, clarifications, extensions and
modifications to UML are strongly encouraged)
- Business modeling
- Dynamic modeling of distributed systems
- Modeling of real-time/embedded systems
- Modeling of web-based systems
Full guidelines for writing and submitting technical papers are
available at the conference website http://hobbes.rug.ac.be/~scs.
Interested authors might send their full papers (written in MS Word) to
Dr.Walid Al-Ahmad at walidal(a)index.com.jo.
Thank you beforehand for your interest in the conference and the
session on Object Modeling.

CALL FOR PAPERS
19TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ASSOCIATION OF MANAGEMENT/ INTERNATIONAL
ASSOCIATION OF MANAGEMENT (AoM/IAoM) www.aom-iaom.org
October 10-14, 2001, Quebec, Canada; Venue: Radisson Hotel Gouverneur
Conference Theme: IN A NEW TIME, IN A NEW WAY: MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS FOR THE
NEW ECONOMY
The AoM/IAoM invites your participation as a keynote or plenary speaker,
presenter of one or two papers, organizer of a panel/ workshop/symposium,
session chair, discussant, reviewer or attendee. Theoretical, research and
practitioner contributions relating to all aspects of management are
welcome.
We are preparing for a particularly exiting conference this year, which
will feature two additional initiatives: the 3rd Annual Project 2005 will
occupy a portion of the program and has posted a separate call
(www.aom-iaom.org/Project-2001.html). Project 2005, a multidisciplinary,
multi-year effort is designed to promote the integration of management,
education, technology, and leadership through a series of international
congresses and special publications. Formal papers, workshops and symposia
are invited as contributions.
And the New Professor (www.aom-iaom.org/new_prof.html), an avant-guard
initiative, composed of creative, enlightened, engaged educators, including
educators practicing in industry and government, who are concerned and
deeply dissatisfied with the present conditions of institutions of higher
learning. These professors are individuals who are committed to break away
from the 20th century, monolithic brick-and-mortar models of traditional
universities. This portion of the conference does not require the
submission of formal papers. Instead, the New professor program creates a
platform for abstract submissions that will be presented as short talks
grouped into colloquia based on common themes.
All may be accessed via www.e-academe.org and/or viewed directly on
www.aom-iaom.org .
The deadline for initial submissions is May 31, 2001.
For more information, email us at AoMgt(a)infi.net or call (757) 482-2273 or
contact the Office of the AoM/IAoM President at
kldi(a)mindspring.com or call (804) 320-5771.

Engineering is aimed to bring together researchers in all
aspects of multimedia and document engineering. We also welcome
Ph.D. students and young researchers that have delivered
their dissertation (degree, master or Ph.D).
Research and experience papers are solicited in, but not limited to,
the following topics:
Models and languages for documents and semi-structured data
- Conceptual structures for documents
- Semantics modeling
- Query languages for Web databases
- Content description definition languages
Data/Document Engineering
- Meta-data Management
- Interoperability issues
- Techniques for integrating heterogeneous data/documents
- Semantic retrieval

Innovative Applications is a programme under the Constraint Programming
2001 Conference. The Innovative Applications is a forum for
practitioners and end users of constraint technology, and an interface
between them and researchers in constraints.
The purpose of the Innovative Track is to report successful
applications of constraint technology, so as to attract potential users
and researchers to this technology. Papers submitted to this track will
mainly be judged by the success of applications reported. Authors may
withhold confidential technical details if preferred.
We welcome submission in, but not limited to, the following topics:
* surveys of an application area, including problems to which
constraint programming may be applied, experience in applying
constraint programming, and areas where further research is required to
meet industrial needs;
* software engineering aspect of constraint programming, including
constraints elicitation, modelling and solving ill-defined
applications;
* solutions of constraint problems using multiple solving techniques,
including cooperative algorithms, hybrid solver configurations, and
embedding constraint techniques in logic programming;
* the evaluation and comparison of approaches, including operational
research vs. constraint programming, and stochastic vs. complete search

Call for Papers,
Focus Theme: Emerging Standards
Dear Colleagues:
EM - Electronic Markets is a key forum for advancing
the understanding and practice of electronic markets
and commerce
(http://www.electronicmarkets.org).
Guest Editor: J. Felix Hampe, University of Koblenz-Landau
Standards underpin electronic markets -- without standards
markets cease to function well. This issue will focus
on emerging standards and asks the question: what do
we need to know about tomorrow's standards?
