IEEE ICDM 2001: Call for Tutorials
**********************************
The 2001 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM '01) will
include tutorials providing in-depth background on specific subjects
in data mining. The recency of the data mining field, and the variety
of disciplines that are represented, lead to many possibilities for
good tutorials:
* Short courses on areas of machine learning, databases, or
statistics that may be "old hat" to specialists in that
discipline, but are new to a majority of the conference
attendees. (e.g., An Introduction to Hidden Markov Models).
* Surveys of new and developing research areas in data
mining. (e.g., Text Mining).
* End-to-end descriptions of the practical application of data
mining technology (i.e., applications that may be "typical" for a
paper, but provide an example of issues faced in a data mining
project that would generalize to problems faced by the conference
attendees).
* An in-depth coverage of a past research breakthrough that is now
becoming a mature technology.
The topics of interest fall within those described in the conference
Call for Papers (http://kais.mines.edu/~xwu/icdm/icdm-01.html).
Submission Details
==================
The tutorial proposal should include the following:
1. Title and abstract of the tutorial;
2. Intended audience. Include prerequisite knowledge required of the
attendees, and the expected areas of interest. (For example, a
tutorial on statistics for people applying data mining tools
vs. a tutorial on statistics for people building data mining
tools);
3. Length of time needed (e.g., half day or full day); and
4. Short biographies of the presenters.
Tutorial materials such as handouts and slides should be included if
available, but are not required for submission. However, providing
such materials will show depth and maturity of the tutorial, and will
be a strong factor in the selection process.
Please send a soft copy (preferred) of your proposal to
clifton(a)computer.org, or a hard copy to:

The book will serve as an introduction to mobile commerce with
emphasis on both theory and application. It will consist of a
collection of essays by researchers and developers of mobile
commerce addressing a wide spectrum of technology and application
issues. These essays will likely be compiled as three parts of
the book. The first will review the current trends in mobile
commerce applications and technology. It will provide the
necessary background knowledge for readers to understand the rest
of the book. The second part of the book will focus on the
technological challenges of mobile commerce. The last part of
the book will cover the application studies and information
systems issues in mobile commerce.
The proposed book will be useful to both technical and non-
technical readers. The target readers are developers of mobile
commerce applications and services, e-business managers,
researchers, investors, university professors and students.
The book can also be used as a reference textbook for courses

Call for papers -
Special issue of ISFrontiers: Informatics Support for
Research in Biomedicine
Information technology is fundamentally changing biomedical research and
clinical practice. Yet
IT support of basic science and clinical research remains primarily
craft-oriented on individual
projects, and does not receive a treatment from the systems perspective.
To raise the visibility of this issue, we are putting together a special
issue devoted to showcasing
best practices of research support across the biomedical research
landscape, and across the
private sector-academic divide. We are seeking papers describing the
design and implementation
of systems for supporting clinical trials, epidemiological observations,
and basic science
discovery processes in private organizations, in non-profit settings,
and in university
environments. Our working hypothesis is that support of research
workflow requires more than
just attention to the database in which data reside for data analysis,
and demands attention to the
entire research process. This attention results in an altered and
improved environment as
research-process knowledge, data silos, and information systems are
integrated into a coherent
infrastructure.
Recognizing that the funding of such infrastructure, while an important
strategic asset, requires
persuasion, we hope that this issue will help system architects
throughout these enterprises in
getting the needed resources for these important efforts.
(Note: The advisory editor of this special issue will be Dr. Ted
Shortliffe, Professor and Chair,
Department of Medical Informatics, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center,
NY )
Those interested in submitting a paper must submit the title of the
paper and a five line tentative
abstract by July 1 to Dr. Harold Lehmann. Manuscript deadline is Sept 1.
Manuscripts,
preferably in electronic form and following ISF formatting as laid out
at the web site, should be
sent to Dr. Lehmann. Please address all questions to him.

Subject: ICIS 2001 Theme Track Call
Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 15:42:48 -0600
From: Malcolm Munro <munro(a)UCALGARY.CA>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
Colleagues, we invite you to submit a paper to the ICIS 2001
Theme-related Research Track. While ICIS papers addressing the
conference theme have received special recognition in the past, the
Program Committee this year has taken the extraordinary step of creating
a special track for papers relating to the conference theme. Our purpose
is to draw attention to the degree to which information technology is
bringing about transformations in organizational processes, and
individual work and social life. Electronic commerce is particularly
prominent in this regard. For a more complete discussion of this
opportunity (as well as full conference details including submission
requirements and deadlines), please see "Theme-related Research Track"
at the ICIS 2001 Call for Papers at
http://www.utdallas.edu/~sumit/ICIS2001_cfp.htm. The full conference
home page is at http://isds.bus.lsu.edu/icis2001/
