[THEME]
Internet of Things (IoT), which refers to "the networked interconnection of
everyday objects, which are often equipped with ubiquitous intelligence", is
now being implemented to many consumer products or services and applied to
many different industries. Things that are previously not much to do with
the Internet connectivity are now connected to the Internet and provide
'smart services' to consumers of many industries.
This special issue on 'Smart Services and Internet of Things' focuses on the
topics related to the applications of IoT to consumer products and services,
which have become 'smarter' thanks to IoT. There are many applications of
IoT that enable smart services. For example, with wearable technologies,
wristwatches have become smarter (i.e., smartwatches) and have enhanced
consumers' lives in various ways (e.g., fitness tracking, health monitoring,
scheduling, communications support, etc.). Smart speakers (e.g., Google Home
and Amazon Echo) have improved consumers' experience in searching
information, managing time, online shopping, etc. Smart home technologies
have helped us save energy consumption and have provided more comfort in
everyday lives. There are many other applications of IoT and smart services
applied in diverse industries, such as healthcare, agribusiness (e.g., IoT
connected smart farms, vineyards, and fish-farms), tourism, and
transportation, to name a few. Moreover, even many municipal and federal
governments are adopting IoT to improve their citizens' lives better and
smarter (e.g., the city of Chicago). Smart services and IoT, however,
present both opportunities and threats related to IT security. As more
things (e.g., devices, sensors, homes, etc.) are connected to the Internet,
more aspects of our lives become embedded in smart services enabled by IoT.
Therefore, IT security issues with IoT and smart services would become much
more important than those in conventional IT systems, since the security
breaches to IoT and smart services might do serious harms to our lives.
[TOPICS]
The following questions in general could be asked and explored in this
special issue. What are the impact of IoT and smart services on individuals,
groups, firms, industries, or countries? What are the challenges and
successes in implementing IoT on smart services in various industries? Why
are some implementations of IoT and smart services more successful than
others? How do people/firms adopt IoT and smart services? What are the
challenges and issues related to adopting IoT and smart services? What are
the key security issues for IoT and smart services? All conceptual,
analytical, technical, and empirical papers are welcome as long as they
develop or extend theory and provide implications to practice. We encourage
all research methodologies, including simulations, text-mining, sentiment
analysis, field experiments/observations, case studies, surveys, etc. Topics
of interest include but are not limited to the following:
- Adoption and diffusion of IoT and smart services
- Applications and business models of IoT and smart services
- Business intelligence in IoT and smart services
- Business models and processes of IoT and smart services
- Case studies of IoT and smart services

*Theme*
This special issue focuses on the use of recommendations or suggestions
from the marketplace in order to capture value. The business value of a
recommendation or suggestion is that it helps e-businesses (including
e-commerce) and social media platforms to uncover associations that are
amongst large amounts of transactions data, for the purpose of providing
personalized shopping suggestions and recommendations to consumers. A
Recommendation Systems (RS), therefore, would be a significant
opportunity for monetization providing a competitive advantage to firms
in the electronic marketplace by helping with up- and cross-sales
(Heimbach et al., 2015), reducing consumers’ costs for searches (Köhler
et al., 2016) and other innovative forms of bundling digital products.
Development of state-of-the-art RS — defined as software agents that are
widely utilized in online platforms to elicit users’ preferences and
interests to generate product or service recommendations (Heimbach et
al., 2015) — is becoming popular in the e-commerce industry for
retrieving and recommending the most relevant information regarding
items, services, and products for users (Khan et al., 2018). It is an
intuitive step to overcome the information overload problem in
electronic markets. Recently, Hsu et al (2018) reported after an
extensive survey of the RS literature, a mapping of RS techniques with
application domains with the potential of significant impact. However,
the report did not provide specific frameworks, models, measures or
use-cases for success.
For example, Business Insider reported in 2017 that over 80% of the
Netflix business was generated from its RS and the remaining less than
20% was generated from searches. Netflix believes that it would lose
US$1 billion or more, yearly, if not for personalized recommendation
engine that maintains its subscribers. Google recently introduced an
improved design and RS to the Home screen of its YouTube application, in
order to entice viewers to continue to watch the videos, and to “…create
the feeling that YouTube understands you.” Apple’s Watch List will
recommend content and present accompanying marketing messages across
their Apple TV devices, through a “…universal search and suggestion
mechanism…” that delivers the content as quickly as possible. MightyTV
is a meta-RS which allows consumers to swipe through a list of movies or
shows across service-providers such as Netflix, Hulu, or HBO, and
consequently suggests new shows that they should watch, based on
profiles. In a value-added feature, known as “mash-up,” consumers can
connect with friends for the RS algorithm to model what their tastes
have in common, from shows to specific actors. However, while
high-quality, personalized recommendations can benefit users, online
businesses may violate laws if they collect too much user data or if
they globalize its use.
It is therefore timely to consider state-of-the-art strategies,
approaches, and case studies of RS that may be adopted in global
electronic markets.
*Central issues and themes*
Possible topics of submissions for this special issue focus on the past
and future evolution of electronic markets as well as of networked
business. Topics may include but are not restricted to:
*Frameworks and models for effective RS in the global, networked economy
*Mapping state-of-the-art RS techniques to characteristics of electronic
markets
*The applications of RS in social-commerce, m-commerce, e-government,
e-tourism, e-learning, and crowd-sourcing
*Global consumer and business perspectives on RS
*RS architecture for business value creation and capture
*Trends and directions of RS platforms, services, and applications
*Approaches to monetizing of effective RS
*Legal and ethical issues in aggregate user data protection (e.g., a
differential privacy model, post General Data Protection Regulations)
*Benchmarking RS effectiveness with social media and networks
*Predictive and prescriptive analytics for RS
*Innovative use-cases of RS in next-generation electronic markets (i.e.,
beyond mobile, social commerce)
*Business outcomes of RS in industry clusters
We encourage contributions with a broad range of methodological
approaches, including conceptual, qualitative and quantitative research.
Please also consider that position papers and case studies might be
especially suited for this special issue. All papers should fit the
scope of Electronic Markets (for more information see

Call for Papers: 25th AMCIS
August 15 - 17, 2019, Cancun, Mexico
Track: Strategies and Competitive Uses of Information Technology
Minitrack: Renewed Focus on Strategic IT Service Management (ITSM)
Deliverables
ITSM is a customer-focused approach to delivering IT in the contemporary
corporation. ITSM can strengthen customer relationships, enhance customer
understanding of the services provided, and consistently deliver customer
value. Although ITSM is not new (its roots go back the Information
Technology Infrastructure Library [ITIL] in the 1980s), it is regaining
importance as CIOs struggle to increase the relevance of IT to both its
internal and external customers. ITSM-oriented leaders generally employ a
framework that defines the relationships of IT technical resources to the
services demanded by their users as well as defines the actual business
services that they provide. Rigorously employed service terminology (ITIL,
Version 3) clarifies the service to both the customer and the service
provider, delineating service offerings, service features, providers,
limitations, exclusions, eligibility, duration, cost, and service levels.
This mini-track also focuses on theoretical approaches to providing
strategic IT services, alignment of IT service deliverables with the
corporate strategic plan, and best practices.

Call for Papers: 25th AMCIS
August 15 - 17, 2019, Cancun, Mexico
Track: Enterprise System
Minitrack: Healthcare Enterprise Systems: the adoption of Integrated
Information Systems in healthcare industry
Integrated Enterprise systems is one of the vital items for digitalization
that is in progress in all industries and healthcare industry is not an
exception. Using suitable enterprise systems provides an opportunity to
improve competitive advantages by increasing efficiency and effectiveness
and quality improvement in healthcare industry.
Enterprise systems include different clinical and administrative workflows
and applications that should be successfully integrated and implemented to
support processes and facilitate operations, administration and decision
making in hospitals. Applications such as CDSS or healthcare information
systems (HIS) and etc. provide necessary data and information for decision
making or operations. However, the lack of integration between different
information systems cannot be ignored, there are information systems such
as LIS (laboratory Information systems), EHR and etc. that can be a part of
healthcare information systems but evidences shows in some cases these
systems do not work properly or work separately in hospitals.
On the other hand, by emerging new advanced technologies in healthcare,
such as expert systems, critical medical devices, intelligent information
systems, digital communication tools and neural networks, it is necessary
that healthcare enterprise systems consider them and use them integrated
with operation modules to improve staff productivity, healthcare
operations, process quality, patient safety, and the overall patient
experience.
This mini track looking for research in following areas:
- Different modules and their applications in Healthcare enterprise

The Third International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining
(WPDM 2019)

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Third Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2019)
will be held in conjunction with The 19th International Conference on
Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2019),
http://www.iccsa.org
Saint Petersburg University, Saint Petersburg, Russia July 1-4 2019
Final submission Deadline: February 17, 2019
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining is an international
forum which brings together researchers and practitioners working on
different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms, enabling
novel applications. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process
huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting
information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms
are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways.
Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is
improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the
demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the
main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data
related to current applications. Therefore, there is an increasing
interest in the design and implementation of parallel data mining
algorithms. On parallel computers, by exploiting the vast aggregate main
memory and processing power of processors and accelerators, parallel
algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory
requirement issues. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order
to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive
datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good
data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the
workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related
to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O
costs should be minimized as well. The Workshop will allow exchanging
ideas and results related to on-going research, focusing on
high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms and applications.
Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data
mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems
which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary
applications. The focus of the workshop is on all forms of advances in
high-performance data mining algorithms an
d applications, and related topics.
The WPDM Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Parallel data mining algorithms using MPI and/or OpenMP
- Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators
- Parallel data mining applications exploiting FPGA
- Distributed data mining algorithms
- Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining
applications
- Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for
data mining

Special Issue "The Second International Workshop on Parallel and
Distributed Data Mining"
A special issue of Algorithms (ISSN 1999-4893).
Deadline for manuscript submissions: extended to January 30, 2019
http://www.mdpi.com/journal/algorithms/special_issues/Parallel_Distributed_…
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue is devoted to the increasing interest in the design
and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms.
The Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining (WPDM 2018) is an
international forum that brings together researchers and practitioners,
working on different high-performance aspects of data mining algorithms,
enabling novel applications. Indeed, datasets grow so rapidly that,
every day, exabytes of data are being generated, and, in order to
extract and infer useful knowledge, parallel processing techniques are
required to cope with this huge volume of data: Traditional sequential
software is not viable to cope with them. When the data are generated in
different places (such as wireless sensor networks and/or Internet of
things devices), they may be geographically spread out, and the data
cannot be sent to a centralized site, thus, the need for distributed
processing algorithms arises. Topics relevant to this Special Issue
cover the scope of the WPDM 2018 Workshop
(http://sara.unisalento.it/~cafaro/WPDM2018/):
- Parallel data mining algorithms using MPI and/or OpenMP
- Parallel data mining algorithms targeting GPUs and many-cores accelerators
- Parallel data mining applications exploiting FPGA
- Distributed data mining algorithms
- Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining
applications
- Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for
data mining
- Performance models for high-performance data mining applications and
middleware
- Programming models, tools, and environments for high-performance
computing in data mining
- Caching, streaming, pipelining, and other optimization techniques for
data management in high-performance computing for data mining
Extended versions of papers presented at WPDM 2018 are sought, but this
call for papers is fully open to all those who wish to contribute by
submitting a relevant research manuscript.
Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering
and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to
go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the
deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be
published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be
listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review
articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned
papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the
Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be
under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference
proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a
single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant
information for submission of manuscripts is available on the
Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international
peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a
manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this
open access journal is 850 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should
be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English
