Betreff: [AISWorld] CFP: AMCIS 2018 Mini-track on "Ontologies &
Information Systems"
Datum: Sat, 20 Jan 2018 08:17:48 +0200
Von: AJ_L Gerber <gerber.ajl(a)gmail.com>
An: AISWorld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Kopie (CC): aurona.gerber(a)up.ac.za
Given the adoption trend of computational ontologies since the
standardization of OWL by the W3C, we want to provide a platform for
research on ontologies and information systems in this SIGODIS mini-track.
An ontology in information systems is described as an artefact that
captures domain knowledge using a standardised, computerized language.
Within modern complex information systems, ontologies are often
particularly relevant because of the coherent representation of the
semantics and meaning of an application domain or similar knowledge in a
computer readable format. The adoption of ontologies is driven by system
requirements such as the capturing of contextual knowledge, the ability to
draw inferences and reason from a knowledge base, reusability of knowledge,
integration of heterogeneous systems, interoperability and
internationalization, as well as semantic or reasoning support for
disruptive technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence and
robotics. This mini-track encourages submission of original research papers
on any aspect of ontologies and information systems, both theoretical and
application, within diverse domains such as information systems
development, conceptual modelling, knowledge management, knowledge
engineering, information sciences and semantic technologies including
languages such as RDF(s) and OWL, and the associated technologies (such as
querying, reasoning and reasoners).
Suggested topics include any use of ontologies and information systems that
include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Ontology-driven Information Systems Development;
- Capturing IS semantics with ontologies;
- Ontologies in or for Information Systems;
- Sytems integration using ontologies;
- Ontologies in Information Systems Architecture;
- Meaning and Semantics in IS;
- Meta-data development and applications;
- Ontology querying and reasoning;
- Ontology engineering;
- Upper, domain and application ontologies;
- Specialized domain ontologies (e.g. enterprise ontology) ;
- Ontology tools and technologies;
- Ontology-driven systems development and systems development
methodologies.
You are cordially invited to submit your research to the SIGODIS mini-track!

Framework for Managing Shared Knowledge in an Information Systems
Outsourcing Context
Hanlie Smuts (University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa), Paula Kotzé
(CSIR Meraka Institute and University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa),
Alta Van der Merwe (University of Pretoria, Informatics, Pretoria, South
Africa), Marianne Loock (University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa)
Both information systems (IS) outsourcing and knowledge management are
well-established business phenomena. The integration of shared knowledge in
an IS outsourcing arrangement, represents the blending of organisational
knowledge with external knowledge sources. In an attempt to provide
tactical mechanisms for creating and managing shared knowledge in
organisations embarking on IS outsourcing arrangements, this article
focuses on the design and application of a knowledge framework for IS
outsourcing, with the purpose of guiding organisations in their knowledge
exchange planning through concrete mechanisms, practical steps and
validation. Key considerations for IS outsourcing is mapped to critical
success factors, each associated with a set of knowledge requirements and
knowledge flows to support the successful achievement of a specific
critical success factor. An associated assessment tool was designed to
identify knowledge exchange mechanisms and potential issues and gaps in
current or future IS outsource arrangements.

Knowledge Management and Quality Control in Software Outsourcing Projects
Rajorshi Sen Gupta (BITS Pilani, KK Birla Goa Campus, Zuari Nagar, India)
This article describes how entrepreneurs face critical risks in terms of
quality control and knowledge management while outsourcing software
development to independent service providers. First, it is recommended that
lump-sum payment contracts should be avoided since software development
project involves uncertainty. Instead, a variable payment contingent on
observed quality can induce the service provider to exert optimal effort on
the project. Second, entrepreneurs must not overlook the importance of
providing economic incentives. They can protect their intellectual property
by withholding critical knowledge and paying information rents in terms of
higher than market wages to the service providers. Third, a startling
result is that a low wage nation is not necessarily the optimal location to
outsource software development projects. Thus, high wage-strong IPR nations
might be chosen instead of low wage-weak IPR nations. Finally, the article
explains the apparent paradox that software projects are often outsourced
to locations that are characterized by weak intellectual property rights
regime and high propensity of imitation.

Distributed ‘Knowing in Practice' Enabled by Knowledge Management Systems
Lakshmi Goel (University of North Florida, Jacksonville, USA)
Many companies set up operations offshore and complete projects by
‘worksharing' where responsibilities are split between geographically
dispersed offices. This article looks at how knowledge management systems
facilitate practices essential for collaborative, distributed work. A
qualitative case study is conducted at a large multinational engineering,
procurement and construction (EPC) company that has successfully
implemented a knowledge management system. The study uses the framework of
‘knowing in practice' to the context of worksharing. This article
contributes to the practice by providing specific suggestions that can be
implemented from a social technical perspective to facilitate worksharing.
Specifically, suggesting technological factors, and efforts needed by users
and managers, in facilitating worksharing. This article contributes to
research by applying the lens of ‘knowing in practice' to the context of
worksharing.

Knowledge Management Process-Oriented Strategy for Healthcare Organizations
Nurhidayah Bahar (UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Shamshul Bahri
(University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
This article explores Knowledge Management (KM) practices among doctors and
nurses in Malaysia. A total of 59 interviews were conducted with doctors
and nurses from two hospitals. The data analysis employed in vivo coding
and process coding techniques. The findings suggest a process-oriented
strategy for managing knowledge among doctors and nurses in a clinical work
environment. The development of this strategy can help the healthcare
workers and management to evaluate and further improve their current KM
practices. Additionally, this article adds another KM strategy to the
literature that is tailored to supporting healthcare organization. Future
studies may want to replicate the proposed strategy in different settings
such as other clinical or non-clinical departments within the hospital,
other public or teaching hospitals or private hospitals.

Innovation Through Boundary Spanning: The Role of IT in Enabling Knowledge
Flows Across Technological and Geographical Boundaries
Shu Han (Yeshiva University, New York, USA), Avimanyu Datta (Illinois State
University, Normal, USA), K. D. Joshi (Washington State University, USA),
Lei Chi (Pfizer Inc, New York, USA)
Innovation is considered the engine for firm growth. Especially
innovations, through recombining seemingly unrelated knowledge streams, can
have groundbreaking impact and lead to sustained competitive advantage. To
generate such innovation, firms often need to go beyond their existing
technological or geographical boundaries to identify and integrate novel
knowledge elements. This article refers to firms' knowledge activities of
drawing upon distant knowledge (i.e., knowledge from dissimilar
technological domains or distant geographical regions) to create novel
technological solutions, as innovation through boundary spanning. Aiming to
investigate the roles of information technology (IT) in facilitating
innovation through boundary spanning, we collected data from the
pharmaceutical industry over a six-year period to test the research model.
The data analysis results indicate that IT supports boundary-spanning
activities in firm innovation and different IT-enabled knowledge
capabilities affect boundary-spanning innovation differently.

Betreff: [AISWorld] CFP: 4th International Workshop on Socio-Technical
Perspective in IS development (STPIS'18)
Datum: Thu, 18 Jan 2018 21:08:44 +0100
Von: ilia <ilia(a)ibissoft.se>
An: AISWORLD Information Systems World Network <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Dear colleagues,
Please consider visiting Tallinn, Estonia in June 2018 and participating in
4th International Workshop on Socio-Technical Perspective in IS
development (STPIS'18)
planned for 12th of June 2018
This is the first call with a submission deadline of *4 March 2018*
The main */purpose /*of the workshop is to arrange */discussions /*on
using a socio-technical perspective in IS development, the long term
goal being to make this workshop a/*meeting place for the community of
IS researchers and practitioners*/ interested in the socio-technical
approach.
Following the purpose, only part of the workshop is devoted to
presentations, the rest is designated for collaborative work. This year
we follow the practice established during STPI'17 and will be working on
a real case from the local industry.
Attached to CAiSE'18 conference https://caise2018.ut.ee/
Full description see at http://stpis2018.blogs.dsv.su.se/
Short description is presented below
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite that a socio-technical perspective has been around for over a
half century, it is often forgotten in the Information Systems (IS)
discourse today. Consequently, many “new approaches” appear to reflect
on IS systems problems, such as modern IT systems poorly adjusted to the
external or/and internal environment (e.g. market, organizational
culture) of organizations in which they are (to be) deployed. We
strongly believe that it is high time the social-technical perspective
took its proper place in IS research, practice and teaching.
The main purpose of the workshop is to arrange discussions on using a
socio-technical perspective in IS development, the long term goal being
to make this workshop a meeting place for the community of IS
researchers and practitioners interested in the socio-technical approach.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Case studies using socio-technical approach
* Information system design using socio-technical approach
* Socio-technical comparative studies of technology/IS adoption
* Socio-technical analysis, design, development and integration of
– health care systems
– crisis management systems
– information security management systems
– learning systems
– privacy enhanced technology
* Societal Security from a socio-technical perspective
* Ethnographic and Anthropological aspects of IS design and adoption
* IT business alignment from a socio-technical perspective
* Using Viable System Model (VSM) for analysis and design of
socio-technical systems
We invite submissions of short and long papers and multi-media materials
in the following categories:
* Position papers
* Idea papers
* Experience reports
* Research papers
* Multi-media. Besides papers, we accept submissions in form of
multi-media materials, for example, recorded video or animated
presentation, describing industrial experience of using socio-technical
perspective for IS analysis or development. In case of acceptance, an
extended abstract is published in the workshop proceedings, while the
multi-media material itself or a link to it is placed on the workshop site.

CALL FOR PAPERS
10th International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information
Sharing
Submission Deadline: *May 2, 2018 *
*http://www.kmis.ic3k.org/*
September 18 - 20, 2018
Seville - Spain
Knowledge Management (KM) is a discipline concerned with the analysis
and technical support of practices used in an organization to identify,
create, represent, distribute and enable the adoption and leveraging of
good practices embedded in collaborative settings and, in particular, in
organizational processes. Effective knowledge management is an
increasingly important source of competitive advantage, and a key to the
success of contemporary organizations, bolstering the collective
expertise of its employees and partners. Information Sharing (IS) is a
term used for a long time in the information technology (IT) lexicon,
related to data exchange, communication protocols and technological
infrastructures. Although standardization is indeed an essential element
for sharing information, IS effectiveness requires going beyond the
syntactic nature of IT and delve into the human functions involved in
the semantic, pragmatic and social levels of organizational semiotics.
The two areas are intertwined as information sharing is the foundation
for knowledge management.
Proceedings will be submitted for indexation by:
DBLP, Thomson-Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, INSPEC, EI,
SCOPUS and Semantic Scholar.
All papers presented at the conference venue will also be available at
the SCITEPRESS Digital Library <http://www.scitepress.org/>.
