Technical Standardization and STS (Science, Technology and Society)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Scholars and policy makers are increasingly interested in standards development and its role in science and technology. Indeed, technical standards may accelerate science (and vice versa), facilitate technology development and in a broader sense, shape functioning of the society. For example, common measurement methods are key for scientific experiments. International communication standards are the basis of the complex communications systems we have today. Safety and environmental standards assure that minimum requirements for the health and safety of users and society are observed.
Standards frequently result from science and technical development and form the basis for future waves of innovation. The interplay of standards and standardisation with science and technology is important but remains largely unexplored. Accordingly, the session 'Technical Standardisation and STS' solicits contributions aiming to explain and explore the role of standards and standardisation for Science, Technology, and Society.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
- The nature of the relationship between standards, standardisation and STS (Science, Technology, and Society).
- Standards and standardisation fostering STS.
- When do standards and standardisation hamper development in science and technology?
- Standardization, competition and incentives for STS.
- Legitimacy and influence of different players on standards development.
- Contributions of science to standards development.
- Standardisation and Intellectual Property Rights.
- Standards and knowledge transfer.
- Role of industry and their associations in standardisation.
- Emergence of social norms in society and their impact on science and technology.

Special Issue "Underwater Sensor Nodes and Underwater Sensor Networks"
Sensors (ISSN 1424-8220)
Website: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/sensors/special_issues/underwater_sensor
Journal Impact Factor: 2.245 (2014); 5-Year Impact Factor: 2.474 (2014), Q1
Deadline: 15 January 2016 (Extended)
Lakes, seas and oceans cover more than the 70% of the Earth surface. The miniaturization of the hardware, jointly from the efforts to develop low cost and low energy consumption devices, has brought new ways to sense and monitor marine environments. New research advances in underwater communication and sensing systems have increased both the types of network topologies to spread in the environment and the sensing parameters. However, new marine data collection and data fusion systems for marine surveillance and pollution detection are needed. Moreover, new schemes to explore and protect the marine environment are pursued to increase the number of applications, which can vary from fish and mussel grow observations, deep-sea archaeology, and seismic and volcanic prediction, to spilled oil monitoring.
This Special Issue welcomes works with recent advances on sensors and sensor networks to monitor, observe, measure, control, and manage underwater environments. Many aquatic environment features should be taken into account when designing and deploying underwater sensor nodes and networks, such as the scalability, to allow deploying large number of nodes, node power consumption and resource limitation, wireless underwater communication, propagation latency, high probability error rate, and bandwidth capacity. All these constraints given by an environments nature make underwater sensors and sensor networks a complex deployment and implementation case.
This Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics of interest:
- Sensor devices to measure water parameters
- Pollution sensor nodes
- Sediment and seabed monitoring nodes
- Underwater acoustic sensors
- Underwater sensor architectures
- Wired and wireless protocols
- Localization and positioning systems
- Underwater Target tracking
- Optical, acoustic and electromagnetic underwater communications
- Radiofrequency communications in underwater environments
- Modems
- Study cases, implementations and real deployments of underwater sensor networks
- Routing protocols specialized for underwater wireless sensor networks
- Cooperation in underwater sensor networks
- Modeling and simulation
- Data collection, data fusion, storage, and data retrieval
Recent advances in electronics, circuits, systems, communication protocols, network algorithms, and data mining have made possible new advances in underwater environments. They are the basis to propose new underwater wireless sensor nodes, sensor node location, sensor node placement, communication protocols, and network architectures, because they allow the study of new ways to communicate underwater with higher data rates with longer distances. Moreover, more underwater applications appear every year because these advances support investigations in marine biology, marine science, oceanography, aquiculture, and environment engineering research fields.
This Special Issue will include unpublished works related with theory and practice of underwater sensor nodes and networks, with special interest on practical implementations and deployments. We also seek new proposals on underwater wireless communication technologies.

Montpellier, France
Organised by
The European Academy for Standardisation (EURAS)
University of Montpellier
***Submission Deadline: 21 February 2016***
To survive and to create value in today's hypercompetitive and turbulent international business environment firms have to develop new approaches. Some of these approaches involve a certain level of co-operation with competitors. Even otherwise fierce competitors such as Samsung and Sony collaborated on a new LCD television standard and for some time the Symbian Foundation had Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola among its members. Today, companies like Airbus, Dassault and Safran Thales use collaboration platforms to foster innovation based on the contributions of the individual partners. Scholars have developed new concepts to describe, analyse and optimize these strategic inter-firm relations.
'Open innovation' describes a situation in which a firm collaborates with its customers, suppliers, distributors, institutional partners and even competitors to innovate. 'Co-opetition' refers to a strategy where firms collaborate with competitors. In both cases, standards frequently play a crucial role. For one, they define inter-firm process, common interfaces and languages. More interestingly, to influence or even control standards in a certain field may well be the sole reason for co-opetition. In standards setting (potential) competitors, allies and third parties share knowledge to contribute to a new standard. From the perspective of Co-opetition and Open Innovation this environment offers a wide variety of aspects for standardisation researchers. These range from e.g. the role of standards in (multi-)national regulation, in technology and innovation management and in business strategy via knowledge and IPR management to conflict management and the theory of social capital.
EURAS 2016 solicits papers on the above theme. However, papers on other standardisation topics will also be considered. Sample topics include:
* Co-opetition and standards
* Open innovation and standards
* Standardisation as a policy tool
* Standards and barriers to trade
* National or international policy and standardisation
* Standardisation and Europe's research and innovation agenda
* Relationship between standardisation and legislation
* Standards as a driver for innovation
* Standards and conformity assessment
* Standardisation and IPR
* Standards and knowledge transfer
* The impact of standards and standardisation
* Quality of standards
* Role of industry and their associations in standardisation
* Standardisation via industry consortia
* History of standardisation
* Standardisation processes
Full papers (up to 30 double spaced pages; rtf. .doc or .docx format) should be submitted to Kai Jakobs at Kai.Jakobs(a)cs.rwth-aachen.de.
All papers will be double blind reviewed by members of the Programme Committee. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, as part of the 'EURAS Contributions to Standardisation Research' book series. Particularly good papers will be fast-tracked to the Int. Journal of IT Standards and Standardization Research or to a special issue of the Int. Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (IJESB).

11th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology
Conference Topics and Theme
The theme for DESRIST 2016 is Tackling Society's Grand Challenges with Design Science. The theme will serve to draw attention to the role design science research in IS can play in addressing important issues facing society, including (but not limited to) healthcare, accessibility, support for the elderly, the natural environment, social good, sustainability, poverty alleviation, not-for-profit organizations, education, and infrastructure. The conference will, of course, be open to the full range of design science contributions, such as improving efficiency and effectiveness in business disciplines, decision-making, design theory, and design science research methods. To support both the conference theme and general DSR concerns, for the first time for this conference, we plan to have a "Best Theme Paper" award in addition to an overall "Best Paper" award.
The conference committee invites submissions for full research papers, research-in-progress papers, posters, panels, and prototypes on the topics above or any other topic relevant to Design Science. Information on submissions will be available at the above website.
