Betreff: [AISWorld] CFP: Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science:
Practice and Experiences
Datum: Tue, 13 Aug 2013 17:57:56 -0500
Von: James Howison <jhowison(a)ischool.utexas.edu>
An: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Perhaps of interest: combines challenges of organization/ecosystem design and information systems development in an interesting institutional environment (science).
First Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science:
Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE)
http://wssspe.researchcomputing.org.uk/
(in conjunction with SC13)
Sunday, November 17, 2013, Denver, CO
Progress in scientific research is dependent on the quality and accessibility of
software at all levels and it is now critical to address many new challenges
related to the development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software. In
addition, it is essential that scientists, researchers, and students are able to
learn and adopt a new set of software-related skills and methodologies.
Established researchers are already acquiring some of these skills, and in
particular a specialized class of software developers is emerging in academic
environments who are an integral and embedded part of successful research teams.
This workshop will provide a forum for discussion of the challenges, including
both positions and experiences. The short papers and discussion will be archived
as a basis for continued discussion, and we intend the workshop to feed into the
collaborative writing of one or more journal publications.
In practice, scientific software activities are part of an ecosystem where key
roles are held by developers, users, and funders. All three groups supply
resources to the ecosystem, as well as requirements that bound it. Roughly
following the example of NSF's Vision and Strategy for Software
(http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf12113), the ecosystem
may be viewed as having challenges related to:
* the development process that leads to new software
- how fundamental research in computer science or science/engineering
domains is turned into reusable software
- software created as a by-product of research
- impact of computer science research on the development of scientific
software
* the support and maintenance of existing software, including
- software engineering
- governance, business, and sustainability models
- the role of community software repositories, their operation and sustainability
* the role of open source communities or industry
* use of the software
- growing communities
- reproducibility, transparency needs that may be unique to science
* policy issues, such as
- measuring usage and impact
- software credit, attribution, incentive, and reward
- career paths for developers and institutional roles
- issues related to multiple organizations and multiple countries,
such as intellectual property, licensing, etc.
- mechanisms and venues for publishing software, and the role of publishers
* education and training
This workshop is interested in all of the above topics. We invite short
(4-page) position/experience reports that will be used to organize panel and
discussion sessions. These papers will be archived by a third-party service,
and provided DOIs. We encourage submitters to license their papers under a
Creative Commons license that encourages sharing and remixing, as we will
combine ideas (with attribution) into the outcomes of the workshop. An
interactive site will be created to link these papers and the workshop
discussion, with options for later comments and contributions. Contributions
will be peer-reviewed for relevance and originality before the links are
added to the workshop site; contributions will also be used to determine
discussion topics and panelists. We will also plan one or more papers to
be collaboratively developed by the contributors, based on the panels and
discussions.
Deadline:
6 September 2013 (any time of day, no extensions)
Submissions:
Submissions of up to four pages should be formatted to be easily readable
and submitted to an open access repository that provides unique identifiers
that can be cited, for example http://arXiv.org, http://figshare.com, etc.
The submitter should then email the URL and identifier (or any questions) to
wssspe(a)gmail.com

IUI 2014
19th International Conference
on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI'2014)
Haifa, Israel February 24-27, 2014
http://www.iuiconf.org/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOPE AND TOPICS OF INTEREST
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IUI 2014 is the 19th annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces
community and
serves as the principal international forum for reporting outstanding
research
and development on intelligent user interfaces.
IUI is where the community of people interested in Human-Computer
Interaction
(HCI) meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are very
interested
in contributions that bridge these two fields and also related fields,
such as
psychology, cognitive science, computer graphics, the arts, etc. IUI
researchers
are interested in improving the symbiosis between humans and computers,
so that
interface design and interactive experiences yield higher performance
outcomes.
This may involve designing interfaces that incorporate intelligent automated
capabilities, if the net impact is a human-computer interaction that
improves
performance or usability in critical ways. It may also involve designing an
interface that effectively leverages human skills and capabilities, so that
human performance with an application excels. In other cases, such as
educational interface design, it may involve exercising judgment in when
not to
automate a function so that humans are encouraged to exert themselves as
they
acquire new skills or domain knowledge.
We call for original submissions that describe novel technologies and
applications to intelligent user interfaces.
IUI topics of interest including, but not limited to:
* User input
- Processing of multi-modal input

design techniques. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital
Library.
IUI 2014 especially encourages submissions on innovative and visionary new
concepts or directions for interface design. We do not require
evaluations with
users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for
their
stated contribution. Full papers should make substantial, novel and relevant
contributions to the field. Short papers can either contain smaller
contributions, novel ground-breaking ideas, or work in progress.
Accepted full
papers will be invited for oral presentation and short paper either as
oral or
poster presentation.
Abstracts Due: October 4, 2013
Full and Short Papers Due: October 9, 2013
* Demonstrations
The demonstrations track complements the overall program of the conference.
Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important
intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions
relevant
to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited

* Industrial Track
The industrial track represents an opportunity for the companies in the
field to
present their late work (as presentations, posters or interactive demos)
and
receive valuable feedback from the research community. It also provides an
opportunity for recruitment and for networking. The industry track will
not be
peer-reviewed but the relevance of proposals for the field will be
judged by
a jury. Please contact industry track chairs at
indtrackchair2014(a)iuiconf.org
Submissions Due: November 15, 2013
* Student Consortium
The IUI 2014 Student Consortium provides an opportunity for Masters and
Doctoral
students to present and receive feedback about their research in an
interdisciplinary workshop, under the guidance of a panel of mentors,
selected
from senior people in the field. We invite students who feel they would
benefit
from this kind of feedback on their research to apply for this unique
opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation as
well as
senior researchers in the field. The strongest candidates will be those
who have
a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but
who are
not so far along their research that they can no longer make changes.
Submissions Due: November 1, 2013
* Workshops
Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite
submissions
of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any
of the
conference topics.

?Cloud? is a common metaphor for an Internet accessible platform of
shared hardware and software hidden from users for scalable service
provision. The technical foundations of Cloud Computing include
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Virtualizations of hardware and
software. Under Cloud Computing, IT-related capabilities are provided as
services, accessible anywhere anytime without requiring detailed
knowledge of the underlying technology. Thus, many mature technologies
are used as components in Cloud Computing, but still there are many
unresolved and open problems. In particular, how traditional information
systems can be (re-)engineered and migrate to new cloud platforms is a
key issue of its adoption. This leads to our workshop topic of ?Cloud
Information System Engineering? (CISE).
The creation, operation, and evolution of such research and practice
raise concerns that range from high-level requirements and policy
modeling through to the deployment of specific implementation
technologies and paradigms, and involve a wide (and ever growing) range
of methods, tools, and technologies. They also cover a broad spectrum of
vertical domains, industry segments, and even government sectors.
This special issue intentionally seeks scientists, engineers, educators,
industry people, policy makers, decision makers, and others who have
insight, vision, and understanding of the big challenges in Cloud
Systems and Services (CSS).
Topics
Topic of interest include but are not limited to the theoretical,
technical, or empirical aspects of the following:
Principles, theories, models, challenges, legal, and social issues
related to the Cloud
e-Business and Marketing on the Cloud
Social network and content on the Cloud
Data mining and knowledge management on the Cloud
Cloud / grid middleware frameworks and configuration design
Novel IS development methodology for cloud computing
Enterprise IS and business process integration / distribution in
the Cloud
Data grid, ontologies and Semantic Web / Cloud
