The 6th IEEE International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and
Applications
December 16-18, 2013
Kauai, Hawaii
Call for Papers
Service-oriented computing is considered today a key technology for the
development of robust and high quality intelligent distributed and
embedded applications. Extensive research and development in the past
few years has pushed SOA technology into state-of-the-art application
areas such as context-aware, cloud-connected, mobile enterprise systems.
However, many of the critical components on building reliable, robust,
and user-centric sensor-based SOA systems are still open for research.
Hence, it is timely to reexamine SOA research opportunities and identify
new research challenges for next generation SOA.
One of the future SOA applications is large-scale cyber-physical systems
(CPSs) that include deep interactions between cyber-sides and
physical-sides through massive sensors, actuators, mobile devices, and
computing servers connected by heterogeneous networks. The services of
large-scale CPSs have challenging requirements such as accurate
timeliness, high reliability, and dynamic adaptability. Many of the
service components are deployed on resource limited embedded systems and
are performance sensitive; others are deployed on cloud servers
providing highly parallel services. Thus, SOA may provide effective
solutions for managing the ever-increasing complexity while meeting the
challenging requirements of CPS services on largely distributed,
heterogeneous and dynamic resource environments.
The 2013 IEEE International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and
Applications (SOCA 2013) will be held in Kauai, Hawaii, with topics of
general service oriented computing and also the focused area of SOA for
large-scale CPSs. The conference includes three days of parallel tracks
program, special-topic workshops/ tutorials, and panel discussion.

FEDERATED COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS?CONFERENCE
held in Krakow, Poland, September 8-11, 2013
CONFERENCE BACKGROUND AND GOALS
Multimedia information has become ubiquitous on the web, creating new
challenges for indexing, access, search and retrieval.
Recent advances in pervasive computers, networks, telecommunications,
and information technology, along with the proliferation of multimedia
mobile devices - such as laptops, iPods, personal digital assistants
(PDA), and cellular telephones - have stimulated the development of
intelligent pervasive multimedia applications. These key technologies
are creating a multimedia revolution that will have significant impact
across a wide spectrum of consumer, business, healthcare, educational
and governmental domains. Yet many challenges remain, especially when it
comes to efficiently indexing, mining, querying, searching, retrieving,
displaying and interacting with multimedia data.
The Multimedia - Processing and Applications 2013 (MMAP 2013) Symposium
addresses several themes related to theory and practice within
multimedia domain. The enormous interest in multimedia from many
activity areas (medicine, entertainment, education) led researchers and
industry to make a continuous effort to create new, innovative
multimedia algorithms and applications.
As a result the conference goal is to bring together researchers,
engineers, developers and practitioners in order to communicate their
newest and original contributions. The key objective of the MMAP
conference is to gather results from academia and industry partners
working in all subfields of multimedia: content design, development,
authoring and evaluation, systems/tools oriented research and
development. We are also interested in looking at service architectures,
protocols, and standards for multimedia communications - including
middleware - along with the related security issues, such as secure
multimedia information sharing. Finally, we encourage submissions
describing work on novel applications that exploit the unique set of
advantages offered by multimedia computing techniques, including
home-networked entertainment and games. However, innovative
contributions that don't exactly fit into these areas will also be
considered because they might be
of benefit to conference attendees.
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
MMAP 2013 is a major forum for researchers and?practitioners from
academia, industry, and government to present, discuss, and exchange
ideas that address real-world problems with real-world solutions.
The MMAP 2013 Symposium welcomes submissions of original papers
concerning all aspects of multimedia domain ranging from concepts and
theoretical developments to advanced technologies and innovative
applications. MMAP 2013 invites original previously unpublished
contributions
that are not submitted concurrently to a journal or another conference.
Papers acceptance and publication will be judged based on their
relevance to the symposium theme, clarity of presentation,
originality and accuracy of results and proposed solutions.

IJITSA SPECIAL ISSUE IN:
Engineering and Management of IT-based Service Systems:
A Systems Approach
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CONTEXT:
The economic relevance of service systems (or service sector in general)
in the modern worldwide economy is totally recognized. As Sheenan (2006)
reports ?business organizations focused on delivering help, utility,
experience, information or other intellectual content ? account for more
than 70% of total value added in the OECD?. Thus, service systems and
service concept - as opposed to the product concept or the single
post-sale business activity - have experienced fundamental changes, and
acquired a high-practical business and theoretical relevance. In this
special issue, we pursue to advance our scientific knowledge on the
processes, methodologies, techniques and tools for engineering and
managing IT-based service systems under a Systems Approach. The
service-oriented paradigm has permeated several disciplines (Chesbrough
and Spohrer, 2006). IT-based service systems can be defined as ?? a value
coproduction configuration of people, IT, other internal and external
service systems, and shared information (such as language, processes,
metrics, prices, policies, and laws.? (adapted from Spohrer et al., 2007).
Accordingly, a service can be defined ?in general- as ?? the application
of resources (including competences, skills, and knowledge) to make
changes that have value for another (system)? (idem, 2007). Service
paradigm has been identified as one of the relevant themes for IT in the
last decade (Demirkan and Goul, 2006; Rai and Sambamurthy, 2006;
Beachboard et al. 2007; Zhao et al. 2008). While models of processes for
engineering and managing IT-based service systems (like ITILv2, ITIL v3,
CMMI-SVC, CobIT, ITUP, MOF 4, ISO 20000) have been posed, their specific
practices are still unclear and few used by most IT practitioners. We
consider such a topic to be mandatory to foster a cost-effective and
trustworthy engineering and management of IT-based service systems (Buede,
2000). Additionally, since IT-based service systems are also systems
(Tien, 2008; Alter, 2008; Mora et al., 2009) their essential and shared
attributes for general systems (Ackoff, 1971; Gelman and Garcia, 1989)
should be considered. Based on aforementioned issues for systems, service
systems, and IT-based systems, we believe that a Systems Approach (Ackoff
et al., 1962; Checkland, 2000) and a Systems Engineering view (Sage, 2000;
Buede, 2000) can be helpful for this aim. A Systems Approach can be
defined as an answering and problem-solving system comprised of: (i)
systemic philosophical paradigms (P?s: an ontological, epistemological and
axiological stance on the world): (ii) systemic theoretical frameworks
(F?s: ideas-constructs, theories, and models); (iii) systemic
methodologies (M?s: methods, techniques, and instruments), and (iv)
situational areas identified as systems (A?s: natural, artificial or
social objects, artifacts and subjects under study). Similarly, a Systems
Engineering discipline, can be briefly defined as ?the interdisciplinary
approach and means to enable the realization of successful (cost-efficient
and trustworthy) systems?. References upon request.

Social computing has become mainstream of computing and technology
development. The novel idea behind this paradigm is to leverage social
connections and social intelligence
in computer systems and applications in order to devise solutions. These
social computing applications/systems gather abundance of social
information that when mined and
analyzed will further enrich their services or help researchers
understand many different things including social dynamics of people,
wisdom of crowd, social construction
and sharing of knowledge, etc. Novel techniques for information
analysis, reuse, and integration are critical to make sense of social
information. Systematic approaches, design
principles, and evaluation strategies need to be researched for
developing effective social computing applications. Other challenges in
social computing include

CALL FOR PAPERS
***************
International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems
(MEDES 2013)
http://sigappfr.acm.org/MEDES/13/
October 29-31, 2013
Abbey of Neumunster, Luxembourg
Description and Objectives
---------------------------
In the world of the Internet, the rapid growth and exponential use of digital medias leads to the emergence of virtual environments namely digital ecosystems composed of multiple and independent entities such as individuals, organizations, services, software and applications sharing one or several missions and focusing on the interactions and inter-relationships among them. The digital ecosystem exhibits self-organizing environments, thanks to the re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in which resources provided by each entity are properly conserved, managed and used. The underlying resources mainly comprehend data management, innovative services, computational intelligence and self-organizing platforms. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems and their characteristics, they are highly complex to study and design. This also leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will empower digital ecosystems to be innovative and value-creating. The application of Information Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of how entities request resources and ultimately interact to create benefits and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge. These technologies can be improved through novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as data management, web technologies, networking, security, human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and self-organizing systems to support the establishment of digital ecosystems and manage their resources.
The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems (MEDES) aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end. The conference seeks related original research papers, industrial papers and proposals for demonstrations.
