MDDE’12 aims to provide a forum for researchers from all fields of multimedia databases and data engineering, including experts in multimedia indexing, multimedia data mining, in-depth media content processing, multimedia searching, analysis, management, and retrieval. Recent advances in computing, networking, storage, and information technology have enabled the collection and distribution of vast amounts of multimedia data in a variety of applications such as entertainment, education, environmental protection, e-commerce, public safety, digital government, homeland security, and manufacturing. However, big data and large scale analytics is a fundamental problem within multimedia data processing and understanding, and several important questions remain to be answered. For examples, what are suitable indexing structures that can facilitate multimedia search and management? What are the system requirements for a multimedia database that can manage various types of media data, including images, videos, audios, multimedia presentations, and media-enriched texts? How to enable and incorporate multimedia data mining and knowledge discovery into existing multimedia database architectures? How can cloud computing facilitate ubiquitous multimedia computing? How to integrate human-computer interaction with data mining to help users understand and interact with big multimedia data corpus? The name of the conference (ie, IKE) that the paper is being submitted for consideration must be stated on the first page of the paper as well as a 100 to 150-word abstract. The length of the final Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will be limited to 7 (two-column IEEE style) pages. Each paper will be peer-reviewed by two experts in the field for originality, significance, clarity, impact, and soundness. In cases of contradictory recommendations, a member of the conference program committee will be charged to make the final decision (accept/reject); often, this would involve seeking help from additional referees by using a double-blinded review process. In addition, all papers whose authors include a member of the conference program committee will be evaluated using the double-blinded review process. (Essay/philosophical papers will not be refereed but may be considered for discussion/panels). Authors whose papers are accepted will be instructed to upload their papers to a particular web site for publication - the uploaded papers to the publication web site will only be checked for correct typesetting. At this point, authors will be required to attest to the originality of their work (ie, declaring that no part of the work is plagiarized and the paper does not suffer from any acts of plagiarism.) Proceedings of IKE will be published in printed conference books (ISBN) and will also be made available online. The proceedings will be indexed in science citation databases that track citation frequency/data for each published paper (science citation databases such as: Inspec / IET / The Institute for Engineering& Technology; The French National Center for Scientific Research, CNRS, INIST databases, PASCAL (covers the core scientific literature in Science; about 90% of inclusions are journals; only about 9% are proceedings; worldcomp tracks are selected to be among the 9% - accessable from INIST, Datastar, Dialog, EBSCO, OVID, Questel.Orbit, Qwam, and STN International); and others. Though, there is no guarantee that the proceedings will also be included in EI Compendex/Elsevier indexings, in the past, the proceedings of SAM was included in these databases. Therefore, we will also be sending the proceedings for indexing procedures to EI Compendex/Elsevier. The printed proceedings/books will be available for distribution on site at the conference. In addition to the publication of the proceedings, selected authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for publication in a number of research books contracted with various publishers - these books will be composed after the conference. However, practitioners often seek personal information not directly from the participants themselves, but from other collected sources, and this may lead to unreliability about the source with privacy protection, and raises ethical concern. Social and ethical matters are nowadays concerns to the society, of which people are the only elements. Furthermore, in the days of technology innovations, computers are being manipulated with programs to act more like people, and eventually several social and ethical matters come into focus related to computer programming, or artificial intelligence. Hence, learning about ethical issues on data mining applications is an important area of research interest. Overall Objective of the Book The ethical conduct of research is becoming an important element of modern scientific research. In these days, computer science and its technological remnants touch nearly every aspect of human life, and computer scientists must conduct and report their research in an ethical manner. The book will provide an overview on ethical issues in research for development of ICTs, and socio-economic development aspects. This book will also collate scientific developments with ethical issues, develop theories in relation to researches with ethical impediments, examine potential ethical dilemmas in this discipline, synthesize experimental cases to develop models as success cases and discuss how ethical concerns may be addressed to tackle these situations. Finally, the book looks to make an in-depth study on other areas of ethical concern and future development of a common acceptable code for ethical computer science research. Target Audience As an emerging subject, the target audiences are expected to be from the scientists, researchers, and practitioners working in the field of data mining, data warehousing, database management and information systems technologies. Furthermore, the audience will include among various stakeholders, like academics, research institutes, and individuals those are interested in this field, and most of all among the huge audience in the public sector comprising government agencies, ministries, education institutions, health service providers, financial service providers, social service providers and other types of government, commercial and not-for-profit agencies. More broadly, topics may follow these issues: - web-based publication and dissemination of data, - development of natural language database search aids for the humanities, - development of social science geographical information systems, - data mining and social science data exploration and description, - creation of an open source digital library system for quantitative data for easier dissemination, - establishment of a federation of geographically distributed interoperable anthropology databases, - establishment of a large international consortia of data sets supporting storage and dissemination of social science data, or - establishment of localized databases as per local demand in local languages. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 30, 2012, a 2-3 page proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter.
