*Frontiers of Distance Learning in Business Education
*Conference held June 8-9, 2012
Fordham University - Westchester Campus, Harrison, NY
(Submission Deadline: January 31, 2012)
*_Conference Overview_:
*Distance education and online learning are interchangeable
terms used to describe the delivery of educational content
whereby the student and the instructor are separated by
geography, time, or both. It is estimated that over
one-third of all business schools offer fully online
business programs and the number of online credit hours
completed by students is expected to grow steadily over the
next decade. Considerable attention is therefore now being
given by business educators to fine-tuning pedagogical
approaches in distance learning in the various
sub-disciplines of business. Research on best practices to
improve students' learning experiences is growing in both
volume and depth.
The objective of this conference, hosted at Fordham
University's Westchester (Harrison, NY) campus, is to
consolidate state-of-the-art knowledge on distance learning
methods, best practices, and research findings as they
relate to business education. The conference will provide
business educators and administrators with insights on how
best to deliver distance learning programs to their
students. Research on pedagogical approaches used by
distance educators will be the focus of the conference.
While the following is a list of potential topics of
interest, other related areas of research in distance
learning would also be relevant to the conference:
- The impact of distance learning methods on learning
outcomes in business courses
- Emerging trends in distance education among business
schools
- Contrasting use of distance learning methods among
undergraduate and MBA students
- Faculty perceptions of distance learning methods
- Costs of distance education in business programs
- Evolution of distance learning methods
- Implementation of quality control procedures for
distance business education
- Segmentation of online students in business schools
- Use of emerging distance education technologies in
business programs
- Methods for encouraging interaction in online
business courses
- Faculty development needs for mobilizing online
business programs
- Team-based online teaching of business courses
- Assessment of online business course outcomes
- Utilization of computer simulations in business courses
- Methods for protecting intellectual property in
online business courses
- Impact of online course characteristics on student
perceptions of learning
- Prescreening students for online business courses
- Methods for enhancing group interaction among
business students in online courses
- Employer perceptions of online business programs
- Online pedagogical approaches across business disciplines
*_Submission Process_:
*Conference papers and abstracts should be submitted by

Subject: [AISWorld] Call for papers to the track "Public
Sector ICT - Citizen Empowerment and Agency Transparency",
ECIS'12, Barcelona, Spain, 10-13 June 2012
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2011 15:50:29 +0200
From: Karin Axelsson <karin.axelsson(a)liu.se>
To: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
*** Apologies for cross-postings ***
Invitation to submit contributions to the track "Public Sector ICT - Citizen Empowerment and Agency Transparency" at the 20th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS'12), Barcelona, Spain, 10-13 June 2012.
Currently public sector institutions, governments and agencies put high expectations in ICT as a solution to many of their challenges. It is expected that public sector ICT increases agency efficiency, citizens' perceived service quality and their willingness to participate in democratic processes. Thus, public sector ICT both comprises ICT to support agency employees and their internal processes, and provides public e-services directed towards citizens and businesses. As a corollary, the IS research community needs to develop further knowledge and inform practice, in order for public sector ICT development to meet the high expectations and reach success.
Both agency efficiency through ICT and citizen-oriented aspects of participation and involvement are considered to be important research issues within this track. A challenge in public sector practices is to balance the needs and expectations arising both from the public agencies and from the citizens and businesses. More knowledge is needed on issues such as how public administrations should conduct and prioritize ICT efforts, how ICT projects should be performed, and how citizens can be involved in the development and implementation of public e-services. New research issues also emerge from the major changes that public administrations go through as a result of increased ICT use in the agencies and in the interaction with the citizens. This sets greater demands on collaboration and interaction between different public agencies. Integrated and joined-up ICT solutions require legal, personal, organizational, semantic, and technical interoperability. Although public e-services are developed in coherence with the citizens' needs, also back-office challenges, such as changes in the work practices or work contents, the agency employees' competences and skills, and in the resources need to be addressed. In order to reach sustainability in public sector ICT efforts, both citizen empowerment and agency transparency are two significant and tightly coupled goals to strive for. In this track we call for papers that increase our knowledge and understanding of these phenomena.
Topics in this track include but are not limited to:
. The e-service concept
. Public e-service development
. Interoperability within public sector and with external stakeholders
. Integration of e-services and web-sites
. E-infrastructure for public sector
. Legal, organizational or personal conditions for and barriers to e-service development
. Public e-services for businesses
. E-government 2.0
. Public sector ICT impacts on social and global welfare
. Citizen participation and involvement in public sector ICT
. E-participation and social media in democratic processes
. Citizens empowerment
. E-services and citizen trust
. Public-private partnerships
. ICT in local government
. E-services and redesign of public administration processes
. Technologies and e-government
. Identification and authentication in e-services
We welcome all types of contributions; full research papers, research in progress, and teaching cases.

Special Issue on Emotional Intelligence for Online Learning
(http://maiga.athabascau.ca/editors/JDET-Special_Issue-2011-Emotional_Intell…)
in
International Journal of Distance Education Technologies
(http://www.igi-global.com/Bookstore/TitleDetails.aspx?TitleId=1078&DetailsT…)
Many intelligent tutoring systems have been developed and used to
support students' learning. Good online learning systems require
emotional communications happened in-between the tutors and
the learners. Emotions play an important role when users engage
in career or drama training, or language learning situations via role-play.
Interpreting player experience and affect from open-ended verbal
communication and diverse body language has been challenging
research tasks. It further promotes the importance of such studies
when employing diverse game-play modalities (e.g. mobile interfaces
and augmented reality platforms) and when recognizing affect and
mood from metaphorical affective expressions, dialogue context,
emotionally ambiguous or non-prototypical spoken utterances,
facial expressions and gestures. Such research is significantly beneficial
to the development of intelligent virtual agents which are capable of
interpreting social relationships, context, general mood and emotion,
sensing or reasonably predicating others' inter-conversion, identifying
its role and participating intelligently in open-ended interaction.
How to develop a system which can identify user's emotion and/or
present its feelings to the user according to user's words, behaviors,
and performance in online learning is definitely an important, a very
helpful as well an interesting research topic. The purpose of this
special issue is to explore how models, theories, and solutions of
emotion intelligence can be used in online learning and what benefits
users can receive from such emotion intelligence-embedded systems
and agents.
Guest Editors (in alphabet order):
Dr. Maiga Chang, Dr. Rita Kuo and Dr. Li Zhang
Suggested topics:
We cordially invite authors to submit high quality manuscripts for
any application domain as long as the core of the manuscript belongs to:
- Affect sensing from text, speech, facial expression and gestures
- Affect inspired interactive intelligent games (e.g., mobile
interfaces, augmented reality platforms, natural user interfaces -
non touch based user interfaces)
- Emotion modelling and generation
- Human computer interaction issues and challenges that affective
computing/emotional intelligence solutions for online learning
may have
- Emotional tutoring agents/learning companions/interactive robots
- Affective computing tools, systems and applications for online learning
- Emotional intelligent agents for assisting teaching or learning
- Multi-agent based affective computing systems and applications
- Practical experiences in using& deploying emotional intelligence
for online learning
- Successful cases of applying emotional intelligence to online learning
- Not-so-successful cases and the lessons learnt
- Evaluation models for emotional intelligent agents/systems

Paper #1: The Effect of Customer Service and Content
Management on Online Retail Sales Performance: The Mediating
Role of Customer Satisfaction
/Anteneh Ayanso, Kevin Lertwachara, and Narongsak Thongpapanl/
This paper analyzes the mediating role of customer
satisfaction by studying the relationship between IT-enabled
customer service and content management efforts and online
sales performance. Using data on the top performing Web
retailers in the U.S. based on their online annual sales, we
show that the extent of retailers' efforts in online
customer service and content management is positively linked
to customer satisfaction, which in turn is positively
related to the retailers' online sales performance. In
addition to directly increasing the revenue, our results
indicate that customer service and content management
features can also indirectly improve the retailers'
financial performance. Specifically, customer service
management impacts the sales performance via the average
ticket amount, while content management affects the sales
via the repeat visit.
Paper #2: Social Networking Websites and Posting Personal
Information: An Evaluation of Protection Motivation Theory
/Kent Marett, Anna L. McNab, and Ranida B. Harris/
The popularity of social networking websites among Internet
users continues to grow, even though social networking
remains a risk for users who do not participate with
caution. Using protection motivation theory (PMT) as a
theoretical lens to provide a research model, and by issuing
a fear appeal to social network users about the potential
threat to their privacy, this study identified perceptions
and beliefs held by users that influence their behavioral
responses to the imposed threats. A snowball sample survey
measuring the variables conceptualized by PMT was completed
by 522 social network users. A time-ordered hierarchical
regression analysis of the responses showed that PMT
provides explanations for both adaptive and maladaptive
responses, particularly for the response of hopelessness.
Implications and directions for future research in this area
are offered.

PAPER ONE
Development of a Mesh Generation Code with a Graphical Front-End
Jeffrey Carver, University of Alabama, USA
Abstract
Scientists and engineers are increasingly developing software to enable them to do their work. A number of characteristics differentiate the software development environment in which a scientist or engineer works from the development environment in which a more traditional business/IT software developer works. This paper describes a case study, specifically about the development of a mesh-generation code. The goal of this case study was to understand the process for developing the code and identify some lessons learned that can be of use to other similar teams. Specifically, the paper reports on lessons learned concerning: requirements evolution, programming language choice, methods of communication among teammates, and code structure.
PAPER TWO
Characterizing Data Discovery and End-User Computing Needs in Clinical Translational Science
Parmit Chilana, University of Washington, USA; Elishema Fishman, University of Washington, USA; Estella Geraghty, University of California, Davis, USA; Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, University of Washington, USA; Fredric Wolf, University of Washington, USA; Nick Anderson, University of Washington, USA
Abstract
In this paper, the authors present the results of a qualitative case-study seeking to characterize data discovery needs and barriers of principal investigators and research support staff in clinical translational science. Several implications for designing and implementing translational research systems have emerged through the authors' analysis. The results also illustrate the benefits of forming early partnerships with scientists to better understand their workflow processes and end-user computing practices in accessing data for research. The authors use this user-centered, iterative development approach to guide the implementation and extension of i2b2, a system they have adapted to support cross-institutional aggregate anonymized clinical data querying. With ongoing evaluation, the goal is to maximize the utility and extension of this system and develop an interface that appropriately fits the swiftly evolving needs of clinical translational scientists.
PAPER THREE
Computational Engineering in the Cloud
Lorin Hochstein, USC Information Sciences Institute, USA; Brian Schott, Nimbis Services, USA; Robert Graybill, USC Information Sciences Institute, USA
Abstract
Cloud computing services, which allow users to lease time on remote computer systems, must be particularly attractive to smaller engineering organizations that use engineering simulation software. Such organizations have occasional need for substantial computing power but may lack the budget and in-house expertise to purchase and maintain such resources locally. The case study presented in this paper examines the potential benefits and practical challenges that a medium-sized manufacturing firm faced when attempting to leverage computing resources in a cloud computing environment to do model-based simulation. Results show substantial reductions in execution time for the problem of interest, but several socio-technical barriers exist that may hinder more widespread adoption of cloud computing within engineering.
PAPER FOUR
Scientific End-User Developers and Barriers to User/Customer Engagement
Judith Segal, The Open University, UK; Chris Morris, STFC Daresbury Laboratory, UK
Abstract
When software supports the complex and poorly understood application domain of cutting-edge science, effective engagement between its users/customers and developers is crucial. Drawing on recent literature, the authors examine barriers to such engagement. Significant among these barriers is the effects of the experience that many research scientists have of local scientific end-user development. Through a case study, the authors demonstrate that involving such scientists in a team developing software for a widely distributed group of scientists can have a positive impact on establishing requirements and promoting adoption of the software. However, barriers to effective engagement exist, which scientific end-user developers can do little to address. Such barriers stem from the essential nature of scientific practice.
PAPER FIVE
An Analysis of Process Characteristics for Developing Scientific Software
Diane Kelly, Royal Military College of Canada, Canada
Abstract
The development of scientific software is usually carried out by a scientist who has little professional training as a software developer. Concerns exist that such development produces low-quality products, leading to low-quality science. These concerns have led to recommendations and the imposition of software engineering development processes and standards on the scientists. This paper utilizes different frameworks to investigate and map characteristics of the scientific software development environment to the assumptions made in plan-driven software development methods and agile software development methods. This mapping exposes a mismatch between the needs and goals of scientific software development and the assumptions and goals of well-known software engineering development processes.
