Call for Papers
IEEE CS International Conference on Software
Science, Technology, and Engineering
June 12--13, 2012
Daniel Hotel, Herzlia, Israel
www.iltam.org/swste2012 or E-mail: swste2012(a)iltam.org
Scope: We are on the threshold of a major paradigm shift in the way we
deploy and deliver software systems. Software delivery in the cloud and
the pervasiveness of social networks and multimedia mobile services
drive the demand for software technologies designed for massive-scale,
non-homogenous, continuously changing environments. To address these
requirements, modern software systems should be agile and scalable in
almost every aspect. At runtime, dynamically changing availability;
adaptive use of resources; mining of huge data sets; and flawless
execution are required. During development, agile methods; rapid and
continuous deployment; and consumerization of IT are becoming
increasingly important.
SwSTE'12 focuses on these trends and other topics in software engineering,
technology, and science. It provides a unique opportunity for researchers,
scientists, practitioners, and managers from Israel and abroad to meet and
share their ideas, results, and experiences.
Format: The two-day conference will include
* keynote talks, presented by well-known software professionals,
* focused track sessions, in which selected papers will be presented,
* state-of-the-art tutorials,
* a doctoral symposium, and
* industrial track sessions, presenting case studies.
A best paper award will be presented at the opening session of the
conference.
Topics of interest: The move to such massive-scale dynamic computing
environments is changing software industry in multiple ways: new design
and modeling methods are needed; testing of large-scale, data-intensive
environments becomes ever more complex; virtualization, new middleware
technologies, and new security challenges are growing in importance; and
resource optimization and parallelism techniques should be adapted to the
needs of modern software systems, which include power-aware, green systems.
While a paper on any topic relevant to software practice and research will
be considered, special emphasis will be given to papers reporting new
results in software engineering, agile methods, cloud computing, embedded
software development, and ways of exploiting new computing paradigms and
architectures.
Submissions and Participation: Papers submitted to the conference should
contain original contributions. SwSTE'12's international program committee
will select the papers to be presented. The SwSTE'12 conference proceedings
will be published by the IEEE Computer Society and will be included at the
IEEE Digital Library. Submitted papers must conform to the IEEE two-column
conference style. See the required template at:

CALL FOR PAPERS
SMDB 2012
Seventh International Workshop on
Self-Managing Database Systems
http://smdb2012.dvs.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/
April 1, 2012
In conjunction with ICDE 2012
April 1-5, 2012 Washington DC, USA
IMPORTANT DATES
* Papers due: November 15, 2011
* Notification: December 7, 2011
* Camera-ready copies: December 18, 2011
DESCRIPTION
Autonomic, or self-managing, systems are a promising approach to achieve
the goal of systems that are easier to use and maintain in the face of
growing system complexity. A system is considered to be autonomic if it
is self-configuring, self-optimizing, self-healing and/or
self-protecting. The aim of the SMDB workshop is to provide a forum for
researchers from both industry and academia to present and discuss ideas
and experiences related to self-management and self-organization in all
areas of Information Management (IM) in general. SMDB targets not only
classical databases but also the new generation of storage engines such
as column stores, key-value stores, and in-memory databases. Beyond
databases, SMDB aims to cover autonomic aspects of data-intensive
systems represented by large-scale map-reduce (e.g., Hadoop) and cloud
environments, where much work on self-management is needed. Last but not
least, SMDB seeks to expand its horizons to include self-management of
non-traditional, new areas of IM such as social networks, distributed
gaming, and peer-to-peer systems.
Research and development in database management systems has been
instrumental in accomplishing some of the goals of autonomic systems by
developing and incorporating strategies for physical database design,
problem diagnosis, load balancing, self-tuning, and self-optimization.
New challenges arising from multi-tenant databases, virtualization,
cloud computing, software-as-a-service, and large data-intensive
systems, such as social networks, distributed gaming, and peer-to-peer
systems require new research.
Early workshops of the SMDB series focused on core topics in
self-managing databases such as automated tuning and provisioning,
automated problem diagnosis and recovery, and automated data protection
and integration. Since 2010 the scope of the workshop has been broadened
to include new topics in the core database area, such as multi-tenant
databases and data management in cloud computing, but also drawing in
other communities, such as, peer-to-peer computing and distributed
systems. For the 2012 SMDB workshop, we want to continue to attract
researchers from both the core database and other communities, such as
the adaptive and event-based systems communities as enabling
technologies for self-managing systems, and data-intensive
internet-scale distributed systems, which should benefit from research
results in SMDBs.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Principles and architecture of autonomic data management systems
- Retro-fitting existing systems vs. designing for self management
- Self-* capabilities in databases and storage systems
- Data management in cloud and multi-tenant databases
- Autonomic capabilities in database-as-a-service platforms
- Automated testing of data management systems
- Automated physical database design and adaptive query tuning
- Auomated provisioning and integration
- Automatic enforcement of information quality
- Self-managing distributed / decentralized / peer-to-peer information
systems
- Self-management of internet-scale distributed systems
- Self-managing and adaptive aspects in social network systems
- Monitoring and diagnostics in data management systems
- Policy automation and visualization for data center administration
- User acceptance and trust of autonomic capabilities
- Evaluation criteria and benchmarks for self-managing systems
- Self-evaluation of data management services in the cloud
- Use cases and war stories on deploying autonomic capabilities
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Authors are invited to submit original research contributions in English
of up to 6 pages in IEEE camera-ready format (templates are available at
the ICDE 2012 submission guidelines page) to the submission site
https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/SMDB2012/. Only electronic
submissions in PDF format will be accepted. Authors of accepted papers
will be encouraged to submit a full paper of up to 8 pages for final
publication. All papers accepted by the workshop will appear in the

Betreff: [AISWorld] Special Issue of JISE: Discovering knowledge

*Special Issue of JISE: Discovering knowledge through highly interactive
information based systems*
*Aims & scope*
In the current digital information age, a critical issue is how we
process the knowledge behind the huge amount of information that appears
every day through every aspect of life (news, social media, TV, radio,
email, blogs, papers and so on). Everywhere you look, the quantity of
information in the world is soaring, at the beginning of 21^st century
there was the estimation that the world produced one to two exabytes
(billion gigabytes) of unique information every year (Lyman and Varian,
2000), The Economist estimates that mankind created 150 exabytes of data
in 2005 and 1,200 exabytes in 2010. That means lots of data in form of
text, numbers, images, sounds, etc. that are deemed important by humans
for different purposes.
The problem is the capacity to process, understand and take advantage
from this information overload. Visualization techniques have the
ability to convey information at the high bandwidth of the human
perceptual system, facilitating recognition of patterns in the
information space and supporting navigation in large collections (Thomas
et al., 2001). However, the challenge is not only knowledge
representation in information system but highly interactive environments
that offer a deep data interaction that allows non trivial knowledge
discovering and decision making by users.
The combination of visualization techniques, visual analytics
techniques, data mining techniques, intelligent recommendation agents,
user centered evaluation and usability patterns, etc. in interactive
systems is a key issue for knowledge discovering in current and future
information systems.
*Topics*
Areas for inclusion in this special issue comprise those related to
knowledge discovering and visual analytics in interactive information
systems. Every submission must spell out the implications of findings in
the paper for highly human-computer interactive information systems.
Topics covered include, but are not limited to:
.Interactive knowledge discovering
.Knowledge discovering in visual collaborative systems
.Visual representations and interaction techniques
.Analytical reasoning
.Data representations and transformations
.Visual analytics information systems experiences
.Visualization in user centered system
*Contributors*
Guest editors disseminate the call for paper in scientific distribution
lists and communities and specific related forums. Also the information
about this special issue will be available in the GRIAL research site.
*Instructions for Authors*
Potential authors should submit full papers by the Submission Deadline.
Manuscript should be submitted to fgarcia [at] usal.es. Manuscripts
should not exceed 18 double-spaced pages. Papers should be prepared
according to the JISE guidelines for authors. A template of submitted
paper can be found at
http://www.iis.sinica.edu.tw/page/jise/InstructiontoAuthors.html. All
papers will be blind reviewed.
*Important dates*
.Submission Deadline: January 31, 2012
.Acceptance Notification: March 30, 2012
.Final Manuscript Due: April 30, 2012
.Publication Date: Publication Date: Vol. 28, No. 4, July 2012 (tentatively)

Business Practices: An IT Approach

Von: "PATRICIA ORDOÑEZ DE PABLOS" <patriop(a)uniovi.es>

*Green Technologies and Business Practices: An IT Approach *
**
*Editors: *
Dr. Patricia Ordoñez de Pablos
University of Oviedo, Spain
*Call for Chapters: *
Proposals Submission Deadline: October 15, 2011
*Introduction*
Green technologies play an important role in the achievement of the
environmental sustainability. Tax incentives, carbon taxes and rising
fossil fuel costs are motivating increased growth and development of
'green' products and services, many of which are the result of
innovative discoveries in biotechnology and nanotechnology. Companies
interested in environmental friendly investment can develop R&D for
biofuels, green walls, energy efficient buildings and waste reduction,
for example.
On the other hand, recent research to investigate the impact of the
green economy activities and technologies on occupational requirements
have identified new and emerging green economic sectors, increased
demand for careers, as well as new and emerging jobs. The success of any
green sector relies on the availability of highly skilled and qualified
workforce
*Objective of the Book*
This book aims to be an international platform to bring together
academics, researchers, lecturers, and persons in decision making
positions, policy makers and practitioners from different backgrounds to
share new theories, research findings and case studies, enhancing
understanding and collaboration in green issues in business and the role
of information technologies and analyse recent developments in theory
and practice.
In his paper ?New green industries? Martin Murray states that as
?traditional industries struggle with the public?s increasing
environmental consciousness, there is a number of new green industries
that are receiving more attention?. Some of these new green industries
that will increase their importance in the coming years are green
manufacturing, green chemistry, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal
energy, advanced biofuels and sustainable agriculture, among others.
For example, when we talk about green manufacturing, we are looking at
an industry that uses traditional manufacturing methods and factories to
create items for green industries. Studies have suggested that the
manufacturing sector could create about 1 million jobs directly and
another 2.5 million indirect jobs in related industries. Green retailing
is quickly growing as more green products are available and the
increased demand by the public. Study after study has shown that the
public will buy green products even in the current depressed market. On
the other hand, the green chemistry industry involves the design of
chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use of
hazardous substances. For example, Clorox have developed a range of
products that will perform the same tasks as the traditional cleaners,
but based from plants not chemicals.
*
*
*The book has a clear editing strategy:*
1.To be the REFERENCE edition for all those interested on the strategic
role of new learning technologies towards the achieve of a long term
environmental sustainability.
2.To be the REFERENCE edition for all those (policy makers, government
officers, academics and practitioners) interested in understanding green
industries.
3.To become a reference edition for people thirsty to know on how to
address the management of green issues in the current economic environment.
The book aims to be the leading source of information for all those
interested in green issues in companies and emerging technologies since
it promotes scientific discussion on policies, methodologies and
approaches , as well as to cover the emerging research topics which are
going to define the green management in the 21st century,
Furthermore, this book will demonstrate the capacity of green models and
policies, information technology and management for the mutual
understanding, prosperity and well being of all the citizens in the world.

CALL FOR PAPERS and POSTERS
Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium (ADS'12)
Florida Hotel and Conference Center, Orlando, FL, USA
March 26-29, 2012
http://www.scs.org/springsim/2012?q=node/205
Manuscript Submission: November 30, 2011.
Sponsored by The Society for Modeling and Simulation
International (SCS).
Co-located with the 2012 SISO Spring Simulation Interoperability
Workshop (SIW)
==============================================================
As part of the 2012 Spring Simulation Multi-conference (SpringSim'12)
http://www.scs.org/springsim/2012
the 2012 Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium is a premier platform to
explore all three aspects of the synergy of simulation and agent
technologies. Hence, it has a special place within simulation and
agent conferences, including agent-based (social) simulation
conferences. Therefore the ADS symposium fills a gap in the agent
community as well as the simulation community.
The purpose of the ADS symposium is to facilitate dissemination of the
most recent advancements in the theory, methodology, application, and
toolkits of agent-directed simulation. Agent-directed simulation is
comprehensive in the integration of agent and simulation technologies,
by including models that use agents to develop domain-specific
simulations, i.e., agent simulation (this is often referred to as
agent-based simulation -when other two important aspects are not
considered), and by also including the use of agent technology to
develop simulation techniques and toolkits that are subsequently
applied, either with or without agents.
Hence, agent-directed simulation consists of three distinct, yet
related areas that can be grouped under two categories as follows:
1. Simulation for Agents (agent simulation): simulation of agent
systems in engineering, human and social dynamics, military
applications etc.
2. Agents for Simulation (which has two aspects): agent-supported
simulation deals with the use of agents as a support facility to
enable computer assistance in problem solving or enhancing
cognitive capabilities; and agent-based simulation that focuses
on the use of agents for the generation of model behavior in a
simulation study.
Through the theme of agent-directed simulation, the symposium will
bring together agent technologies, tools, toolkits, platforms,
languages, methodologies, and applications in a pragmatic manner. In
this symposium, established researchers, educators, and students are
encouraged to come together and discuss the benefits of agent
technology in their use and application for simulation. It is a way
for people to discuss why and how they have used agent technology in
their simulations, and describe the benefit of having done so.
The theme of ADS'12 is based on the observation of the following
premises.
* The growth of new advanced distributed computing standards along
with the rapid rise of e-commerce are providing a new context that
acts as a critical driver for the development of next generation
systems. These standards revolve around service-oriented
technologies, pervasive computing, web-services, Grid, autonomic
computing, ambient intelligence etc. The supporting role that
intelligent agents play in the development of such systems is
becoming pervasive, and simulation plays a critical role in the
analysis and design of such systems.
* The use of emergent agent technologies at the organization,
interaction (e.g., coordination, negotiation, communication) and
agent levels (i.e. reasoning, autonomy) are expected to advance
the state of the art in various application technologies is
difficult. Using agent-supported simulation techniques for
testing complex agent systems is up and coming field.
* To facilitate bridging the gap between research and application,
there is a need for tools, agent programming languages, and
methodologies to analyze, design, and implement complex,
non-trivial agent-based simulations. Existing agent-based
simulation tools are still not mature enough to enable developing
agents with varying degrees cognitive and reasoning capabilities.
ADS 2012 will provide a leading forum to bring together researchers and
practitioners from diverse simulation societies within computer science,
social sciences, engineering, business, education, human factors, and
systems engineering. The involvement of various agent-directed
simulation groups will enable the cross-fertilization of ideas and
development of new perspectives by fostering novel advanced solutions,
as well as enabling technologies for agent-directed simulation
AUTHOR GUIDELINES
* Technical papers provide a longer format for presenting experience
reports, research results, or descriptions of "work in progress".
They are limited to 8 pages.
* Short position papers are targeted at raising a question or framing
an issue for discussion during the symposium. Position papers are
limited to 3 pages.
* Poster presentations present an opportunity to present work in
progress and receive feedback from colleagues. A one page write-up
of the poster presentations will be included in the proceedings.
Formatting guidelines and author instructions are available at
http://www.scs.org/conferences .
Papers should be submitted electronically to
http://www.softconf.com/scs/ADS12 .
All papers will be subject to a peer-reviewing process by three program
committee members. (Please see the key dates listed below)
FINAL PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All prospective authors, whose papers are accepted for inclusion in the
program, will be invited to submit their position or technical papers to
ADS'12. Accepted and registered papers will be published in the conference
proceedings by the SCS. The committee will select a set of best papers.
