CALL FOR PAPERS (with apologies for cross-posting)
Special Issue on Data Mining for Personalized Educational Systems
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)
Web site: http://www.uco.es/grupos/kdis/umuai/special_issue.html
***********************************************************************
SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
Educational data mining (EDM) is an emerging discipline, concerned with
developing methods for exploring the unique types of data that can be
gathered in an educational context. The increase in instrumented educational
software and in databases of student test scores has created large data
repositories reflecting how students learn. EDM focuses on computational
approaches for using those data to address important educational questions.
One focus of EDM consists in improving personalized educational systems,
which is the topic of this special issue.
EDM can enhance the effectiveness, personalization and/or adaptivity of such
learning environments. In turn, student data coming from personalized
systems are semantically richer than data from traditional web-based
education system, and can lead to deeper diagnostic analysis.
Contributions to this special issue are particularly welcome in, but not
limited to, the following topics related to Data Mining for Personalized
Educational
Systems:
- Analysis and visualization of student interactions.
- Applying recommender system in educational environments.
- Prediction of performance and marks.
- Applying sequence mining in educational data.
- User modeling using data mining.
- Applying text mining in educational data.
- Improving educational software.
- Detecting outliers, cheating, gaming, errors, misuse, gifted, etc.
- Detecting motivation, affective, behavior, learning styles, etc.
- Improving teacher support and feedback.
- Test item analysis.
HOW TO SUBMIT
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI formatting
guidelines and submission instructions available at:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special Issue on
Data Mining for Personalized Educational Systems.
Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and short abstract
(which can be altered for the actual submission) to assist in the formation
of a panel of appropriate reviewers.
UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and substantiated
research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of computer systems to their
human users, and the role that a model of the system about the user plays in
this context.
Many articles in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe the results of
several years of work.
Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space to authors (so long as what they
write is important).
Authors whose paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including
illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a short
justification upon submission that explains why a briefer discussion of
their research results would not be advisable.
REVIEW PROCESS
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be reviewed by
three established researchers selected from a panel of reviewers formed for
the special issue.
Barring unforeseen problems, authors can expect to be notified regarding the
review results within three-four months of submission.
IMPORTANT DATES:
- Notification of Intent to Submit: as soon as possible
- Submission of Title and Abstract: March 1, 2010 - Manuscript
Submission: April 16, 2010

Background
Several modelling techniques for the analysis and design of
enterprises, business processes and information systems are in
existence. The field includes numerous modelling methods, notations
and approaches (e.g. ER, ORM, UML, ArchiMate, EPC, BPMN and DEMO).
Even with some attempts to standardise (e.g. UML for object-oriented
software design and ArchiMate for enterprise architecture), new
modelling methods are being introduced, many of which differ only
marginally from existing approaches. These ongoing changes
significantly impact the way enterprises, business processes and
information systems are being analysed and designed in practice.
The EMMSAD conference focuses on exploring, evaluating, and enhancing
current systems modeling methods and methodologies, where systems can
refer to enterprises, business processes, as well as information
systems. Though the need for such studies is well recognised, there is
a paucity of such research in the literature. The objective of the
EMMSAD series of conferences is to provide a forum for researchers and
practitioners interested in modelling methods for systems analysis and
design to meet, and exchange research ideas and results. It also
provides the participants an opportunity to present their research
papers and experience reports, and to take part in open discussions.
EMMSAD'10 is the 15th in a very successful series of EMMSAD events,
previously held in Heraklion, Barcelona, Pisa, Heidelberg, Stockholm,
Interlaken, Toronto, Velden, Riga, Porto, Luxembourg, Trondheim,
Montpellier and Amsterdam. As of 2007, EMMSAD is officially linked to
the CAiSE conference series.
Topics of Interest
Relevant topics include theoretical and/or empirical or case-based
exploration of modeling methods and methodologies in a systems
analysis and design context, where systems include enterprises,
business processes as well as information systems.
The topics of interest include general modelling issues, such as:
* Modelling languages
* Quality of models & modelling
* The process of modelling
* Specific strategies for modelling
* Situational methods and strategies for modelling
* Experiences in modelling
* Theoretical/philosophical foundations of modelling
where this can pertain to specific aspects of systems, such as:
* Goal modelling
* Enterprise modelling
* Value modelling
* Service & transaction modelling
* Business processes & business rules
* Information & database modelling
Important dates
* Paper submissions: February 18
* Notification of acceptance: March 13
* Camera-ready copies: March 20
* Conference: June 7-8
Submission guidelines
The conference accepts two types of submissions: completed research
and research in progress. Completed research papers should include
analysis of data and discussion on research findings. Research in
progress papers should report on research that is well under way with
preliminary research results available at the time of the conference.
For both types of papers, the paper should not exceed 13 pages using
the correct style (including references and appendices). Papers may
involve a theoretical analysis of a scientific challenge, as well as
the presentation of a solution to an identified scientific challenge.
The first page should begin with the title of the paper, author names
(contact author underlined), affiliations, and e-mail addresses,
followed by an abstract of no more than 150 words. The paper should be

GENERAL OVERVIEW
======================
The Internet has become a cornerstone of the tourism& travel industry and created an online travel market that facilitates tourists to search for information and book their trip online. The huge number of Web sites that offer travel-related information, however, might lead to daunting information overload. In order to support tourists in decision-making, new methods and technologies (e.g., semantic Web, recommender systems, context-sensitive approaches, or innovative user interfaces) are required to deliver highly targeted services to tourists. Besides that, the penetration of high-end mobile devices together with the decrease in mobile data prices have resulted in tourists asking for mobile services. Also the supplier side, including destination management and travel organizations, has to keep up with the rapid developments in ICT. For this purpose, they have to use innovative Web mining methods to analyze the market, inter-organizational Web applications/services to exchange information and novel forms of social Web and rich Internet applications to enforce the contact with their customers.
The crucial prerequisite for all these developments discussed are proper Web engineering techniques to allow for a systematic development and maintenance of next generation tourism Web applications.

Betreff: [AISWorld] Call for Papers: Information Systems and
Environmental Sustainability, MIS Quarterly
Datum: Fri, 12 Feb 2010 15:25:29 -0600
Von: Jan DeGross <degro003(a)umn.edu>
An: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org
The MIS Quarterly invites submission of unpublished, original research
for a Special Issue on Information Systems and Environmental
Sustainability. The call for papers aims to contribute significantly to
a first wave of rigorous and relevant research that demonstrates the
role that IS, which has been labeled “green IS,” plays in the areas of
environmental, economic, and societal sustainability issues. This
special issue seeks to highlight research that reports developments and
analyses that provide solutions to global warming; that explicates
theories and frameworks to guide future research in the area of IS and
sustainability; and that comprises rigorous empirical analysis of the
role of information systems, responsive as well as strategic green IS,
in enabling sustainability efforts. The research might be
multi-disciplinary such that it includes economics, sociology,
psychology, design, engineering, or other perspectives and could employ
multiple methods. It should serve to set the foundation for a continuing
program of research on sustainability in not only the IS community but
the business research community in general.
Guest Editors: Arvind Malhotra (University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill), Nigel P. Melville (University of Michigan), and Richard T. Watson
(University of Georgia).
The submission deadline is January 16, 2011. To view this Call for
Papers, or to download a pdf copy of the call, go to the MIS Quarterly’s
web site at http://www.misq.org or
