Many Web 2.0 technologies are highly collaborative where collective action with rich data exchange is the norm. Social media brought the voluntary disclosure of personal data to the mainstream, thus exposing users' published information with potential abuse by online crooks, stalkers, bullies, and even by their friends. The goal of this special issue is to report frontier research addressing the need for a paradigm shift in understanding and addressing users' online safety and privacy needs in social media. Particular emphases will be put on the interplay between social and technological issues associated with online safety and privacy assurance in social media with a focus on online social networks. The issue aims to offer an integrated view of the field by presenting approaches originating from and drawing upon multiple disciplines. We welcome research papers that examine technological, conceptual, design, economic, behavioral, managerial, organizational, and societal aspects of assuring online safety, privacy, and security in social media. Submissions should describe original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: -Defining Privacy 2.0 in online social networks -Online safety and privacy challenges and protection mechanisms -User mental models and behavioral dynamics -Tools or applications that support online safety and privacy assurance -User awareness and training -Risk identification and assessment -Protecting adolescent online safety *Instructions for Authors and Review Process:* Submitted papers should not be under consideration elsewhere for publication. Sponsored by The Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS). ============================================================== As part of the 2011 Spring Simulation Multi-conference (SpringSim'11) http://www.scs.org/springsim/2011 the 2011 Agent-Directed Simulation Symposium is a premier platform to explore all three aspects of the synergy of simulation and agent technologies. Hence, it has a special place within simulation and agent conferences, including agent-based (social) simulation conferences. Therefore the ADS symposium fills a gap in the agent community as well as the simulation community. The purpose of the ADS symposium is to facilitate dissemination of the most recent advancements in the theory, methodology, application, and toolkits of agent-directed simulation. Agent-directed simulation is comprehensive in the integration of agent and simulation technologies, by including models that use agents to develop domain-specific simulations, i.e., agent simulation (this is often referred to as agent-based simulation -when other two important aspects are not considered), and by also including the use of agent technology to develop simulation techniques and toolkits that are subsequently applied, either with or without agents. Hence, agent-directed simulation consists of three distinct, yet related areas that can be grouped under two categories as follows: 1. Simulation for Agents (agent simulation): simulation of agent systems in engineering, human and social dynamics, military applications etc. 2. Agents for Simulation (which has two aspects): agent-supported simulation deals with the use of agents as a support facility to enable computer assistance in problem solving or enhancing cognitive capabilities; and agent-based simulation that focuses on the use of agents for the generation of model behavior in a simulation study. Through the theme of agent-directed simulation, the symposium will bring together agent technologies, tools, toolkits, platforms, languages, methodologies, and applications in a pragmatic manner. In this symposium, established researchers, educators, and students are encouraged to come together and discuss the benefits of agent technology in their use and application for simulation. It is a way for people to discuss why and how they have used agent technology in their simulations, and describe the benefit of having done so. The theme of ADS'11 is based on the observation of the following premises. * The growth of new advanced distributed computing standards along with the rapid rise of e-commerce are providing a new context that acts as a critical driver for the development of next generation systems. These standards revolve around service-oriented technologies, pervasive computing, web-services, Grid, autonomic computing, ambient intelligence etc. The supporting role that intelligent agents play in the development of such systems is becoming pervasive, and simulation plays a critical role in the analysis and design of such systems. * The use of emergent agent technologies at the organization, interaction (e.g., coordination, negotiation, communication) and agent levels (i.e. reasoning, autonomy) are expected to advance the state of the art in various application technologies is difficult. Using agent-supported simulation techniques for testing complex agent systems is up and coming field. * To facilitate bridging the gap between research and application, there is a need for tools, agent programming languages, and methodologies to analyze, design, and implement complex, non-trivial agent-based simulations. Existing agent-based simulation tools are still not mature enough to enable developing agents with varying degrees cognitive and reasoning capabilities. ADS 2011 will provide a leading forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse simulation societies within computer science, social sciences, engineering, business, education, human factors, and systems engineering. The involvement of various agent-directed simulation groups will enable the cross-fertilization of ideas and development of new perspectives by fostering novel advanced solutions, as well as enabling technologies for agent-directed simulation AUTHOR GUIDE * Technical papers provide a longer format for presenting experience reports, research results, or descriptions of "work in progress". They are limited to 8 pages. * Short position papers are targeted at raising a question or framing an issue for discussion during the symposium. Position papers are limited to 3 pages. * Poster presentations present an opportunity to present work in progress and receive feedback from colleagues. Social computing lies at the intersection of social behavior and computing systems. It focuses on the use of technology to create social conventions and contexts, as well as the new relationships and power structures that result. Three widely-agreed tenets of social computing are (i) the shift of innovation from a top-down to a bottom-up model; (ii) the shift of value from ownership to experiences; and (iii) the shift of power from institutions to communities. Social computing (also known as Web 2.0 and social media) has drawn much interest in academia, the information technology industry and among Internet users. This track at ITNG 2011 will serve as a platform for those researching this area. Submissions may include research, system, evaluation, policy and position papers. Electronic submission in PDF or MS Word format are required. Papers must represent high quality and previously unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or journal. Interested authors should submit a 6-page paper of their original and unpublished work including 5 keywords in the IEEE format. Submissions must be typeset as double-column text, using no less than 10 pt font, and using a text block that does not exceed 6.5" width and 9" height. The reviewing is double-blind. Authors must not be identified in the submission either directly or indirectly. Please be careful so as to not refer to your own work in the first person or leak authorship in any way within the text of the paper. Reviewing will be performed by the members of the SNAPI’11 Program Committee. Each paper will receive at least three reviews from members of the Program Committee. Vertical coordination and integration, with mobile telecom vendors driving and controlling technological innovation, and mobile network operators driving and controlling service provision, have persisted in the mobile industry until very recently. However, the emergence of various types of software platforms and internet-like end-to-end architectures in mobile systems is increasing the pressure on the dominant technological and busin ess set-up, to the point of a reconfiguration of the entire mobile system. The impact of this mobile-internet convergence for the structure of the mobile industry, and in particular for the position of mobile network operators as integrated service providers, has been a subject of heated debate for some time now. One strong current in business and academic literature is arguing that the ?open and modular? internet architectures will (or should) wipe away the current ?closed and integrated? telecommunications architectures. It is often implied that, as a result, (mainly US-based) internet and IT firms are bound to make significant inroads into the telecommunications market. By contrast, others anticipate that the advantages in terms of quality and security offered by integrated telecommunications architectures will allow mobile operators to dominate the mobile internet and to capture a major share of all service revenues in this context. Recently, however, a s mall body of ?revisionist? literature on modularity and the ICT industry has emerged that, if applied to the mobile internet, may challenge both visions. It argues that there is no automatic mirroring between technical modularity and market unbundling, and that, instead of relying on any outright ?open? or ?closed? strategy, successful ICT companies increasingly employ ?open but not open? platform strategies in order to combine advantages of diversity and complementarities with advantages of control and coordination. Multi-actor and multi-side platforms need closer analysis. The emergence of various these new types of platforms in mobile and wireless systems illustrates that competition and diversity in the mobile arena are increasing strongly, and that convergent service provision is rising strongly. Mobile platforms may refer to various system levels including mobile devices\' operating systems, mobile network protocols, mobile services and applications, and so on. Through platform ownership, companies aspire to position themselves as central gatekeepers in the mobile industry. This evolution presents a range of new possibilities to create and capture value in new and unexpected ways. At the same time, it challenges the traditionally dominant stakeholders active in the mobile industry, and has led analysts to anticipate a reconfiguration of the entire mobile industry architecture. Service and Content Providers have to consider how to decide how to deal with the multiple available platforms. Moreover privacy concerns for users are becoming more an issue. In the wake of a buoyant and turbulent year for mobile service platforms, this special issue will focus on the causes and effects of the current explosion of platforms in the mobile ICT industry. The objective of this issue is to explore changing business models and industry architectures as a result of the introduction of mobile platforms. The issue calls for original papers on this central topic. Papers may be of an empirical or of a conceptual nature. They may deal with the characteristics of successful business models in this field, the emergence of new mobile industry architectures, new mobile eco-systems, and the competition and collaboration between media, IT, internet and telecommunications companies regarding mobile platforms. The papers may focus on individual platforms and applications, as well as on cross-platform comparative studies. The focus is on technology, on value creation in multi-actor settings as well as on governance of new mobile eco-systems.
