The 2009 IEEE International Workshop on Semantic Computing and Multimedia
Systems (IEEE-SCMS 2009
http://www.cis.uab.edu/kddm/scms09/index.htm
Held in conjunction with the Third IEEE International Conference on Semantic
Computing (IEEE ICSC 2009), Berkeley, CA, USA - September 14-16, 2009
http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/icsc/
CFP:
With the proliferation of multimedia data (image, video, structured text, etc.)
and the recent advances in networks and information technology, multimedia
computing is having an unprecedented impact on every aspect of our life, from
the personal use of multimedia mobile devices, such as iPod and PDA, to a wide
spectrum of domains such as business and healthcare. The new multimedia
standards (e.g., MPEG-21) facilitate the seamless integration of multiple
modalities into interoperable multimedia frameworks, transforming the way
people work and interact with multimedia data. These key technologies and
multimedia solutions interact and collaborate with each other in an ever
effective way, bringing along the multimedia revolution. Traditional multimedia
research, which largely lies in signal processing and data communication, is
now facing challenges posed by the new research trends such as multimedia
semantic computing, multi-modal interaction and cross-mining, cooperative
processing, new multimedia standards, Quality of Service (QoS), multimedia
security, and social issues, which are just a few examples of the major
research areas.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers in multimedia
semantic computing to discuss the state of the art of the research on
semantic-based multimedia systems, present theoretical frameworks and practical
implementations, and identify challenges and open issues in multimedia semantic
modeling and integration. Multimedia semantic computing can be defined as
"Computing with (machine processable) Descriptions of Content and Intentions"
of multimedia data and has been gaining attentions in various applications
including pervasive multimedia computing systems, multimedia delivery over the
network, personalized multimedia information retrieval systems which adapt to
the user's needs, integration of semantic content and schema from distributed
multimedia sources so that the user sees a unified view of heterogeneous data,
clustering and classification of semantically-tied information in different
multimedia modalities, security issues in multimedia/hypertext systems, etc. We
invite researchers from various disciplines to submit original research
contributions to this workshop.
IEEE SCMS 2009 will be held in conjunction with IEEE International Conference
on Semantic Computing (http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/icsc/).
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:
* semantic content analysis
* semantic integration
* multimedia retrieval (image, video, audio, etc.)
* multimodal data analysis and interaction
* Multimedia streaming and networking
* human-centered multimedia computing
* image/video/audio databases
* multimedia data mining
* multimedia data storage
* social network analysis from multimedia
* multimedia data modeling
* distributed multimedia systems
* multimedia data visualization
* multimedia assurance and security
* novel applications
Instructions for authors:
Papers reporting original and unpublished research results on the above and
related topics are solicited. Authors should submit a 6-page technical paper
manuscript (in English) in double-column IEEE format including authors' names
and affiliations, and a short abstract, following the document templates
available on the ICSC2009 paper submission web site
http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/icsc/. Manuscripts should be sent as an attachment
via email to one of the Program Chairs listed below on or before the deadline
date of June 15th, 2009. All papers should be in Adobe portable document format
(PDF). Submissions should include the name and the email address of the
corresponding author.
All submitted papers will be refereed for quality, originality and relevance by
the Program Committee. The acceptance/rejection of the papers will be based on
the review results. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop
proceedings together with the proceedings of the IEEE ICSC 2009 conference.

CALL FOR PAPERS
***********************************************************************
Journal of System Architecture (JSA)
Special Issue on "Security and Dependability Assurance of
Software Architectures"
http://ees.elsevier.com/jsa/
***********************************************************************
************
Introduction
************
The ongoing shift from software development from scratch to component
and service-based system integration has raised a number of new
challenges for software engineering in industrial-strength domains
such as embedded systems, telecommunications, and process control. To
name but a few, these challenges include the treatment of evolving
requirements and assurance of security and dependability properties
(S&D) under unpredictable runtime conditions.
The increasing number of critical processes supported by software
systems and the increasing dependence of valuable assets (including human
well-being, or even human lives) on the security and dependability of
computer support for these processes introduce the need of new mechanisms
that can improve the level of trust we have in such systems. One central
concept in this direction is certification.
Furthermore, the inevitable trend towards distributed systems built by
integrating and embedding subsystems, components or services that are
frequently under the control of different entities makes the certification
of such systems a challenging open issue that current practices for
certification fail to address appropriately. In fact, in future
scenarios, systems will be dynamically assembled, thus achieving higher
levels of flexibility.
In this scenario, traditional techniques for achieving security and
dependability assurance seem inadequate, since current S&D assurance
and certification are strictly intertwined with the development process,
and therefore are only valid for systems and environments planned at
design time and not changing at runtime.
These two characteristics of new distributed systems and computing
environments introduce the need of basing security and dependability
assurance and certification on rigorous, in-depth system analysis.
In this context, methodologies, techniques, and tools for assessing and
certifying the security level of software become an important aspect
towards the design and development of software components to be
integrated in complex system architectures.
******
Topics
******
The JSA special issue will focus in particular on context, methodologies,
techniques, and tools for V&V of software architectures, with particular
focus on supporting assurance and compliance, as well as security and
dependability certification, for evolving and long-lived systems. Authors
are invited to submit papers on a variety of topics, including but not
limited to:
- foundations and new perspectives of V&V mechanisms and security
certifications;
- solutions, tools, frameworks for S&D assurance and certification;
- new and/or existing certification processes and tools suitable for
challenging contexts (e.g., telecommunications, mobile, real time,
process control, and embedded systems), and/or experience with them;
- new and/or existing modelling techniques which are particularly suited
to evolving systems, and/or experience with them;
- tools and case studies that integrate techniques from different areas,
such as
. V&V mechanisms, including static verification, dynamic verification,
testing
. product and process certification,
. empirical software engineering,
. modeling of evolving and distributed systems.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Submissions Deadline: February 12, 2009
The nature and scope of the Information Security field has evolved
over the past several years. No longer are we just concerned with
protecting the technical edifice. Our emphasis has become more
holistic and we tend to consider all aspects of information protection
as central to the field of security. The Annual Security Conference
provides a forum for discourses in Security, Assurance and Privacy
that will define the moment and provide a useful basis for nurturing
further dialogues.
Contributions in the form of research papers, panel proposals and case
studies are invited. All submissions are peer reviewed and automatically
considered for publication in the Journal of Information System

AIM AND SCOPE
--------------
Proliferation of database-driven web sites has brought upon a plethora of information access and
dissemination applications. Monitoring and trading stock portfolios, news notification, weather
tracking, and even simple search are just a few examples. In addition, recently, new applications
have emerged that go beyond information access and dissemination and enhance creativity,
information sharing and exploration, and collaboration among users, providing richer interaction
possibilities. Now, users cannot only access content but they can also generate, share and modify
content, compose their applications, enhance their interface, etc. Web-based communities, wikis,
social networks, mashups, folksonomies are some of the emerging new applications. In all these
applications, different notions of user information, such as preferences, community memberships and
social interactions, and context information, such as a user's social network, location, time,
and other features of a user's environment, are of paramount importance in order to improve and
personalize user experience. In this context, new challenges emerge for user-centric, context-aware
database systems for storing and managing different aspects of user and context information,
for data management and computing taking into account personal, social and contextual information
about users and for customizability of their behavior.
