A DECADE OF MINING THE WEB
A Special Issue in the Journal of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery
(DMKD 2010)
Call for Papers
The Web has changed our way of living, doing business, exchanging
information, establishing and maintaining social contacts. Scientists
are investigating the phenomenon of the Web from different
perspectives. Scholars in knowledge discovery and data mining have
turned their attention towards the Web, almost as soon as people
started using the Web for a variety of private and business
activities. The analysis of human behavior in the Web and the support
of knowledge extraction and information acquisition have been the
topic of conferences and workshops for over a decade. Among them the
WEBKDD workshop, organized since 1999 under the auspices of the ACM
SIGKDD international conference on knowledge discovery and data
mining, has served in establishing a community of Web miners,
identifying the challenges of the practitioners and promoting
innovative research solutions. About 10 years after this first
workshop on mining the Web, we take a fresh look on research
achievements and challenges ahead: we invite contributions that
combine a retrospection of the achievements in the last decade with an
in-depth discussion of current trends and new open problems for the
next decade. We solicit both surveys with a strong visionary portion,
and visionary works that build upon a solid methodological groundwork.
Topics include but are not limited to:
* web analytics
* web search
* recommender systems
* personalization user modeling
* online communities social web mining
* Semantic Web
* computational social science
* mining from virtual worlds and games
Submission procedure:
The submission takes place in two phases. In the first phase, an
extended abstract PROPOSAL of up to 6 pages should be submitted for
evaluation. It should contain adequate information for the reviewers
to assess the importance of the topic addressed, the width and depth
of the research associated with it and the solidity of the vision
promoted. Authors of accepted proposals will be invited to submit full
papers.
Manuscripts should be submitted to:
http://DAMI.edmgr.com. This online system offers easy and
straightforward log-in and submission procedures, and supports a wide
range of submission file formats. The article type 'SI: 10 Years of
Mining the Web' should be chosen when submitting to this special issue.

ABOUT THE SOFTWARE AND SERVICES TRACK
The software industry in Europe competes aggressively, both for a share
of
the local market (representing 30% of global spending), and worldwide,
resulting in a revenue in billions of Euros. Increasingly Software as a
Service (SaaS) is opening up previously entrenched markets so that it is
essential to support its adoption. Already, service-orientation has
rapidly
risen to prominence in application construction at enterprise scale, and
ontology-based semantics has proven its usefulness in this arena. At the
same time Web-based systems, especially in the context of Web 2.0 and
the
Semantic Web, are increasingly built from more lightweight, so-called
RESTful services. This track is interested in both ends of this
spectrum,
and on the cross-fertilization of semantics-based support for the
engineering, deployment, provisioning and consumption of services.
Particular topics of relevance are:
- Novel semantic descriptions for software services and service-based
systems, including RESTful services
- Use of semantics in the service engineering process
- Matchmaking/discovery, ranking and selection of services
- Data and protocol/process mediation
- Tools for the manual creation of semantic service descriptions
- Extraction of semantic service descriptions from unstructured and
semi-structured sources
- Automated composition and federation of services
- Service science
- Case studies and issues regarding adoption of semantics in service and
software engineering
- Exploiting semantics for service quality assurance
- The role of semantics in context-driven service adaptation
Papers should be submitted through the Easychair system:

*****
ABOUT THE ESWC2010
The mission of the Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2010) is to
bring
together researchers and practitioners dealing with different aspects of
semantics on the Web. ESWC2010 builds on the success of the former
European
Semantic Web Conference series, but seeks to extend its focus by
collaborating with other communities and research areas, in which web
semantics play an important role -- within and outside ICT. At the same
time, ESWC2010 is a truly international conference, not only "European".
Semantics of web content, enriched with domain theories (ontologies),
data
about web usage, natural language processing, etc. will enable a web
that
provides a qualitatively new level of functionality. It will weave
together
a large network of human knowledge and make this knowledge
machine-processable. Various automated services, based on reasoning with
metadata and ontologies, will help the users to achieve their goals by
accessing and processing information in machine-understandable form.
This
network of knowledge systems will ultimately lead to truly intelligent
systems, which will be employed for various complex decision-making
tasks.
Research about web semantics can benefit from ideas and
cross-fertilization
with many other areas: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language
Processing,
Database and Information Systems, Information Retrieval, Multimedia,
Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science.
ESWC2010 will present the latest results in research and applications in
its
field. The research program will be organised in targeted research
tracks.
In addition, the conference will feature a tutorial program, system
descriptions and demos, a posters track, a Ph.D. symposium, and a number
of
collocated workshops. The individual calls for these events can be found
on
the conference Web site (http://www.eswc2010.org/).
*****
SUBMISSIONS
ESWC2010 welcomes the submission of original research and application
papers
dealing with all aspects of representing and using semantics on the web.
We
encourage theoretical, methodological, empirical, and applications
papers.
The proceedings of this conference will be published in Springer's
Lecture
Notes in Computer Science series. Paper submission and reviewing for
ESWC2010 will be electronic via the conference submissions site. Papers
should not exceed fifteen (15) pages in length and must be formatted
according to the information for LNCS authors.
Papers must be submitted in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format)
format
and will *not* be accepted in any other format. Papers that exceed 15
pages
or do not follow the LNCS guidelines risk being rejected automatically
without a review. Authors of accepted papers will be required to provide
semantic annotations for the abstract of their submission -- details of
this
process will be provided on the conference Web page at the time of
acceptance. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for
the
conference.

*Call for Papers for the AMCIS 2010 minitrack*
* Business Models for the Digital Economy*
... an AMCIS minitrack since 2000!
*Introduction *
This minitrack serves as a forum for the presentation and discussion of
new and innovative approaches of business models beyond e-commerce for
coping with the challenges of the digital economy. We consider an
economy based on the digitization of information and the respective
information and communication infrastructure as digital economy. This
new type of economy implies not only technological, but also and
especially structural and process-related challenges and potential. The
way in which economic value is created will change fundamentally in the
digital economy and thus transform the structure of economies and
societies.
This evolution will radically alter processes and structures within and
between industries leading to the digital economy. All of these
developments characterize the emerging digital economy and cause new
challenges businesses have to cope with. This clearly will have a major
impact on how business models have to be designed. Therefore this
minitrack addresses all topics concerned with the analysis, design,
development, implementation, and control of future business models for
the creation of economic value in the digital economy from a
communication, organizational, business, economic, and managerial
perspective applying a theoretical, conceptual, or practical approach.
*Suggested topics include but are not limited to the following: *
· Challenges and foundations of the digital economy
· Analytical and architectural frameworks for new business models
· Design approaches/methods for new business models
· Models and modeling techniques/approaches for new business models
· Industry perspectives on business models
· Challenges of changing and converging industries:
o Media industry (e.g., publishing, music business)
o Financial industry (e.g., emerging intermediaries,
private/retail banking, insurance)
o Telecommunications (e.g., mobile network operators)
o Tourism industry
· A business model perspective on
o Mobile Business
o Ubiquitous Commerce
o Collaborative Commerce
o Social Commerce
· 'Web 2.0' business models
· Trust and new business models
You are cordially invited to submit your research to the mini track!

* Conference background and goals
Mobile Learning, a Retrospective Outlook
Since its inauguration in 2005, the IADIS Mobile Learning conference
series has provided a forum to present, discuss and promote
international mobile learning research.
Past conference themes have focused on pedagogical approaches most
suited for mobile learning such as collaborative, contextual, and
constructivist which support data collection, context & location
awareness and distributed activities. In 2007 the conference aimed to
harness an international perspective on the ‘big issues’ in mobile
learning by discussing topics such as the conflict between personal
informal learning and traditional classroom education, the evaluation of
mobile learning and appropriate methods for this setting, the design of
mobile learning activities and the integration of mobile devices in the
broader educational scenarios, among others. In 2008, our concern was to
explore various dimensions of the learners’ mobility for example,
physical, conceptual and social, to discern how these in conjunction
with mobile and fix technologies may support learning. Last year, the
conference debated the increasing phenomenon of user generated content,
in particular mobile media.
Five years on, the IADIS Mobile Learning 2010 International Conference
seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of mobile
learning research which provides a retrospective outlook of the field.

Background and Rational
=======================
Over the last two decades, research in data and information quality
(DIQ) has advanced significantly. Many frameworks, measurement
approaches and theoretical concepts have been developed and proposed. At
the same time, industry and researchers have provided us with many case
studies and best practice. DIQ has been included as topic in many
conferences; however, in order to reflect the foremost achievements in
DIQ research, the research community needs to revisit and discuss not
only the relevance but also the rigor in DIQ research.
With this track, we aim to provide a platform for reflecting and
validating current contributions in the domain and to discuss research
approaches, research methods and research results of DIQ research. We
particularly encourage submissions that focus on (re)validating current
and prominent frameworks, approaches or concepts. With the focus of this
Minitrack, the topic should aim to discuss research aspects of DIQ.
Papers can include and discuss various research methods and research
based on case studies, quantitative methods such as experimental and
simulation but also empirical research to examine the existing models,
methods, approaches and frameworks.
Topics of interest
==================
Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following list:
* Validations of DIQ research
* Revalidation of previous DIQ research and frameworks
* Scope of DIQ research
* DIQ research models

CALL FOR PAPERS
16th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2010)
August 12 - 15, 2010 (Thursday-Sunday)
Swissôtel Lima
(http://www.swissotel.com/EN/Destinations/Peru/Swissotel+Lima/HOTEL+HOME/Hot…)
Track: Performance and Measurement
Minitrack: Information Systems Success & Benchmarking
Annual worldwide spending on information technology (IT) has been
increasing for many years. By 2010, International Data Cooperation
expects the total expenditure on IT to reach 1.48 trillion US dollars
(IDC 2007). Simultaneously, however, a greater number of information
systems (IS) failures are still emerging. A questionnaire-based survey
carried out in 2006 in the USA indicated that only 62% of software
projects were considered successful (Verner et al. 2006). The
measurement of investments and developed systems' success, as well as
the paradox of high investments and low productivity returns
("productivity paradox") therefore remains a top concern for both
practitioners and researchers (Brynjolfsson 1993). During the last two
and a half decades, research on measuring IS success - the clarification
of an important dependent variable in IS research - has been a popular
stream of research. A number of models have been proposed in attempts to
define IS success and identify the various causes of success or failure
respectively. Complementary, the benchmarking method allows for an
external perspective on the unit of analysis and therefore for an
inter-organizational comparison. Thus, organizations are able to assess
costs and benefits of IS with respect to a peer group. In addition,
benchmarking establishes standards as well as a shared understanding and
common procedures. Researchers and practitioners interested in
submitting papers to this minitrack are encouraged to present research
into strategies, methodologies, and stories that relate to assess and
benchmark IS. In addition, this minitrack will be used to explore the
bodies of performance measurements that define the current state of
research in measuring IS success.
Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to:
* Frameworks and models for assessing IS success/effectiveness
* Measuring IS success/effectiveness in global organizations and
globally dispersed communities
* Impact of strategic, organizational, process-related, cultural, and
other issues on IS success
* Critical discussion of existing approaches (D&M IS Success Model, TAM,
etc.)
* IS success factors and key performance indicators
* Benefits management/measurement
* Benchmarking initiatives comparing IS across different organizations
and industries
* Exploring security system success and security benchmarking
* Cost and Benefit Measurements of Privacy and Security
* Empirical studies evaluating different topics and kinds of IS such as
- Customer Relationship Management Systems
- Project (Portfolio) Management Systems
- Knowledge Management Systems
- Decision Support Systems
- Collaborative Systems
- Enterprise Systems
- Management topics (e.g. IS strategies, IS governance)
- IT service management frameworks
* Case studies of IS success and performance evaluation
* System Requirements lead to System Success
Authors of selected papers will be invited to prepare enhanced versions
for fast track journal publication in the Business Process Management
Journal (BPMJ) special issue on "Information systems evaluation and
benchmarking for business performance improvement"

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Principled Design and Evaluation of Adaptive Systems
User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
(An international journal published by Springer Verlag)
Web site: http://www.easy-hub.org/umuai/
=======================================================
Updates from the previous CFP:
* If you plan to submit a paper to the special issue, please
contact the editors (umuai_specialissue at easy-hub.org) at your
earliest convenience, to indicate your intention and the topic
your submission will cover.
* A web site and a mailing list have been set up for discussing
prospective contributions to this special issue. If you are
interested in participating in the discussions, or just want
to receive progress updates, please contact the editors
(umuai_specialissue at easy-hub.org).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The importance and benefits of involving users in the design and
evaluation of adaptive systems have been advocated for a long time.
In fact, user studies have become an integral part of papers
published in the UMUAI journal, and indeed most papers published
in the major conferences in the area. Although this is most
definitely indicative of increasing maturity in the field, we are
far from having solved all related outstanding issues:
* Most papers report summative evaluations, aiming to establish
the extent to which the use of an adaptation method has improved
the system. Often more scientific insight can be gained from
formative evaluations that inform and guide the development
process of adaptive systems.
* Most papers report on a single evaluation activity, often
assessing the system as a whole only. More principled and rigorous
forms of evaluation are possible, in which different system layers
or components are evaluated separately, and more is learned about
what causes success (or, more importantly in some cases, failure).
* Certain success criteria have received a lot more attention than
others. For example, for recommender systems, the focus has often
been on recall and precision, rather than serendipity, privacy and
trust. A more holistic approach to evaluation is needed, including
the consideration of trade-offs between criteria. Metrics and
methods for evaluating new criteria are also needed.
This special issue aims to create a new point of reference for the
evaluation of adaptive systems, bringing future evaluations to the
next level. Rather than just encouraging evaluation studies, the
goal of this special issue is to reflect the current body of
knowledge on evaluation methods and methodologies for different
types of user adaptive systems. We expect contributions will
address the following core categories:
* Papers describing novel methods that can be used for the user-
centred design and formative evaluation of adaptive systems.
* Papers demonstrating the value and benefit of success criteria
used in the evaluation of adaptive systems, validating concrete
evaluation metrics, or considering trade-offs between different
criteria.
* Papers describing frameworks for the principled design and
evaluation of adaptive systems, that may provide guidance and
serve as the theoretical underpinnings of future studies.
All papers in the issue will undergo stringent peer-review. Papers
proposing a new evaluation method, framework, or criteria will
need to validate these proposals, for example through case studies
and / or surveys.
Authors will be expected to position their work in relation to a
framework for the principled design and evaluation of adaptive
systems, which will be summarized by the editors in an
introductory article. This framework has been developed over the
course of several international workshops (for more informaton
see http://www.easy-hub.org/workshops/ ) and preliminary material
for prospective contributors to the special issue has been made
available on the issue's web site (see
http://www.easy-hub.org/umuai/layered.dot ). To provide a coherent
point of reference, authors are also expected to cross-reference
their accepted submissions to each other, where applicable, in a
second round of editing.
Articles that describe a traditional global summative evaluation
of an adaptive system should be submitted to the regular track of
UMUAI rather than this special issue (contact the editors if in
doubt).
HOW TO SUBMIT
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI
formatting guidelines and submission instructions available at:
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html
Each submission should note that it is intended for the Special
Issue on Principled Design and Evaluation of Adaptive Systems.
Note! Potential authors are asked to submit a tentative title and
short abstract (which can be altered for the actual submission)
** at your earliest convenience ** to the special issue's editors
(umuai_specialissue at easy-hub.org) to assist in the formation of
a panel of appropriate reviewers, and facilitate discussions
amongst the prospective contributors.
UMUAI is an archival journal that publishes mature and
substantiated research results on the (dynamic) adaptation of
computer systems to their human users, and the role that a model
of the system about the user plays in this context. Many articles
in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe the results of
several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI gives "unlimited" space
to authors (so long as what they write is important). Authors
whose paper exceeds 40 pages in journal format (including
illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a
short justification upon submission that explains why a briefer
discussion of their research results would not be advisable.
IMPORTANT DATES
* Deadline for submission of title and abstract: At your earliest
convenience, and not later than January 4, 2010
* Deadline for paper submissions: February 1, 2010
REVIEW PROCESS
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be
reviewed by three established researchers selected from a panel of
reviewers formed for the special issue. Barring unforeseen
problems, authors can expect to be notified regarding the review
results within three months of submission.

Special Issue on
Design Research in HCI
Design Research creates, builds, and evaluates innovative artifacts such
as constructs, frameworks, models, methods, and information systems. It
also investigates methods, behaviors, and processes related to design. HCI
Research is concerned with the ways humans interact with information,
technologies, and tasks, especially in business, managerial,
organizational, and cultural contexts. Although design, implementation,
and evaluation of interactive information systems for human use in various
contexts for various purposes are central parts of HCI research, IS
scholars have yet to invest more effort on the design part of HCI. The
critical role of design research in HCI is obvious.
This special issue of THCI calls for innovative design research where the
innovative artifacts are information and communication technologies (ICT)
for human use. Emphasis can be on both the human and the ICT sides of the
interaction. On the human side, use design draws from the knowledge base
of psychology, social sciences, and human factors. On the ICT side,
interface and interaction design draws from the knowledge base of computer
graphics, sensory peripheral devices, and other technical areas to build
user interfaces that enable effective system use.
Topics include but are not limited to:
? Science and/or theories for design in HCI
? Philosophical foundation of design in HCI
? New principles and methods of design in HCI
? Specific design innovations to support individuals, groups,
organizations or societies
? Design aesthetics, emotional design, affective computing
? Evaluating and comparing new interactions and interfaces
? Integration of new technologies in HCI designs
? Best practices of design in HCI
? Impacts of mobility and distributed computing in HCI designs
? Impacts of service-oriented architectures and cloud computing on HCI
designs
? Ethical issues of HCI design
