PAPER ONE
A Survey on Classical Teletraffic Models and Network Planning Issues for
Cellular Telephony
Francisco Barcelo-Arroyo, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain
Israel Martin-Escalona, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain
Research on traffic characterization and analysis of cellular networks has
been very active in the past decades; however, it is difficult for network
planners to incorporate new results to network engineering. On the one
hand, some models are very complex and need advanced programming and
skills to be properly computed. On the other hand, reliability on those
models is poor because there is a general lack of published field studies
to corroborate them. This article proposes simple well-known teletraffic
models for cellular networks compared to the conventional Erlang-B
frequently applied when a first estimate is needed. The authors review the
latest results on the characterization of the arrival process and service
time in cellular systems. According to the arrival and service
characteristics, this article proposes three models to obtain an approach
to the performance characteristics of the cellular system.

PAPER TWO
Testbed Implementation of a Pollution Monitoring System Using Wireless
Sensor Network for the Protection of Public Spaces
Siuli Roy, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India
Anurag D, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India
Somprakash Bandyopadhyay, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India
Air pollution is an important environmental issue that has a direct effect
on human health and ecological balance. Factories, power plants, vehicles,
windblown dust, and wildfires are some of the contributors of to
pollution. Reasonable simulation tools exist for evaluating large scale
sensor networks; however, they fail to capture significant details of node
operation or practical aspects of wireless communication. Real life
testbeds, capture the realism and bring out important aspects for further
research. In this article, the authors present an implementation of a
wireless sensor network testbed for automatic and real-time monitoring of
environmental pollution for the protection of public spaces. The authors
describe the physical setup, the sensor node hardware, and software
architecture for anytime, anywhere monitoring and management of
pollution data through a single, Web-based graphical user interface. The
article also provides practical issues in the integration of sensors,
actual power consumption rates and develops a practical hierarchical
routing methodology.

PAPER THREE
A GPS Based Deterministic Channel Allocation for Cellular Network in
Mobile Computing
Lutfi Mohammed Omer Khanbary, Aden University, Yemen
Deo Prakash Vidyarthi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India
The scarcity of the radio channel is the main bottleneck toward
maintaining the quality of service (QoS) in a mobile cellular network. As
channel allocation schemes become more complex and computationally
demanding, alternative computational models that include knowledge-based
algorithms and provide the means for faster processing are becoming a
topic of research interest. The authors introduce an efficient
deterministic technique, capable of handling channel allocation problems
as an alternative. The proposed model utilizes the global positioning
system (GPS) data for tracing the hosts likely movements within and
across the cells and allocates the channels to the mobile devices
accordingly. This article evaluates the performance of the proposed
technique by conducting simulation experiments for the two parameterscall
blocking and handoff failures. In addition, the authors carry out a
comparison of the proposed model with an earlier model to estimate the
effectiveness of the proposed technique.

PAPER FOUR
Energy-Efficient Self-Organizing Routing for Wireless Mobile Networks
Melody Moh, San Jose State University, USA
Rashmi Kukanur, San Jose State University, USA
Xuquan Lin, San Jose State University, USA
Subhankar Dhar, San Jose State University, USA
The instant deployment without relying on an existing infrastructure makes
mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) a striking choice for many dynamic
situations. An efficient MANET protocol may be applied to other important
emerging wireless technologies, such as wireless mesh and sensor networks.
In this article, the authors propose a hierarchical routing scheme that is
scalable, energy efficient, and self-organizing. The new algorithm that is
discussed the dynamic leader set generation (DLSG), which dynamically
selects leader nodes based on traffic demand, locality, and residual
energy levels, and de-selects them based on residual energy. Therefore,
energy consumption and traffic load are balanced throughout the network,
and the network reorganizes itself around the dynamically selected leader
nodes. This article analyzes time, space, and message complexities and
addresses implementation issues. In addition, the authors carry out a
performance evaluation by simulating DLSG and four existing hierarchical
routing algorithms.

A number of problems in science, industry and commerce, which require
broad international cooperation, may be addressed by using sophisticated
equipment and top-level expertise. Therefore, the development and
dissemination of techniques and technologies that allow virtualized,
remote and shared access to industrial or scientific instruments are
essential for the progress of society. The possibility of using
scientific or industrial equipment independently of their physical
location helps towards equality of opportunity for and unification of
communities, and subsequently provides new momentum for industry,
science, and business.
The current edition of the Workshop goes beyond exploitation of remote
instrumentation on the Grid. First of all, it focuses on new Remote
Instrumentation (RI) aspects related to middleware architecture,
high-speed networking, wireless Grid for acquisition devices and sensor
networks, QoS provisioning for real-time control, measurement
instrumentation and methodology. Additionally, it will provide knowledge

OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
To obtain a unified view of information systems, based on theoretical and
applied research performed utilizing the systems approach to
service-oriented software engineering, service-oriented architectures, and
system development process models based on services.
CONTEXT:
A Service System is a new configuration of technology and organizational
networks designed to deliver services that satisfy the goals and needs of
customers. However, Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) has emerged as a
major trend of computing paradigm in the past few years, changing the way
software systems are designed, architected, delivered and consumed. In
this sense, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web services are being
adopted by industries to make business services perform more efficiently
and effectively. They contribute to the shaping of the processes of
business modeling, solution creation, service delivery, and software
architecture design, development and deployment. This special issue aims
to cover a wide range of topics related to SOC paradigms and its
approaches, techniques, methods, tools and technologies.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited
to) the following:
Foundations for service-oriented software engineering (design
philosophies, research philosophies, theoretical underpinnings,
disciplines of references, evolution of software engineering paradigms
(procedures, objects, components, services, models of reference for
service software systems).
Services Engineering Practices and Case Studies ( (e.g., healthcare,
financial, aviation, education, etc.).
Service-oriented Architectures (design methodologies, standards and
models of reference, SOA and related areas: BPM, SOP, ITSM, Systems
Engineering). Tools, Solutions and Services. Interoperability and
collaboration.
System development life cycles based on services (new analysis and design
methods, requirements engineering for software service systems, evolution
of SDLCs, agile development life cycles based on services).
Service-Oriented Modeling, Development Processes and Methods. Service
Delivery, Deployment and Maintenance.
Service-oriented systems Quality, Policy, Trust, Security and Privacy.
Service-Oriented Simulation/Test Engineering. Test methods and framework
for services and service-oriented systems. Verification, Validation, and
Testing of Service-Oriented Systems.
Innovative applications of Service-oriented Software Engineering (SOSE).
Service-oriented systems and Semantic Web.
Service-oriented systems on Grid Network.
Mobile Service-oriented systems.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for this
special theme issue Service-oriented Software Engineering: Foundations,
Architectures, SDLCs and Innovative Applications on or before (extended
to): January 31, 2010. All submissions must be original and may not be
under review by another publication. INTERESTED AUTHORS SHOULD CONSULT THE
JOURNALS GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS at

The International Conference on Ambient Systems, Networks and Technologies (ANT-2010) is a leading international conference which provides an international forum for researchers, developers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government to address research challenges and to present and discuss research ideas, developments and experiences related to the ambient systems infrastructure, models, and technologies.
The general aim of ambient systems is to provide an environment wherein computing devices exist anywhere and everywhere. In such systems mobile and embedded computing devices form ad hoc collaboration using different communication networks (e.g., wireless networks, RFID, etc) in order to share and exchange information and provide services. Ambient systems pose new research challenges due to the open and unreliable nature of the environment and the complexity and heterogeneity of the computing devices and the underlying communication networks. These characteristics challenge traditional techniques and demand new ways of approaching the problems related to the ambient systems.
