premier conferences for presentation of advances in their respective
fields. We anticipate to have 2,400 or more attendees from over 85
countries participating in the 2009 joint conferences.
The motivation is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research
conferences into a coordinated research meeting held in a common
place at a common time. The main goal is to provide a forum for
exchange of ideas in a number of research areas that interact. The
model used to form these annual conferences facilitates communication
among researchers from all over the world in different fields of
computer science, computer engineering and applied computing. Both
inward research (core areas of computer science and engineering) and
outward research (multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and
applications) will be covered during the conferences.
WORLCOMP'09 will be composed of research presentations, keynote
lectures, invited presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, and
poster presentations. In recent past, keynote and/or tutorial speakers
included: Prof. David A. Patterson (U. of California, Berkeley);
Prof. Michael J. Flynn (Stanford U.); Prof. John H. Holland
(U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor); Prof. Brian D. Athey (U. of Michigan,
Ann Arbor), Prof. H. J. Siegel (Colorado State U.); Prof. Barry Vercoe

follow a particular typesetting format to prepare their papers for
publication.)
The length of the Camera-Ready papers (if accepted) will be limited
to 7 (IEEE style) pages. Papers must not have been previously
published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. The
first page of the draft paper should include: title of the paper,
name, affiliation, postal address, and email address for each author.
The first page should also identify the name of the Contact Author
and a maximum of 5 topical keywords that would best represent the
content of the paper. Finally, the name of the conference that
the paper is being submitted to must be stated on the first page.
Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity,
impact, and soundness. Each paper will be refereed by two experts
in the field who are independent of the conference program committee.
The referees' evaluations will then be reviewed by two members of
the program committee who will recommend a decision to the chair of
the track that the paper has been submitted to. The chair will make
the final decision. Lastly, the Camera-Ready papers will be reviewed
by one member of the program committee.
PROPOSAL FOR ORGANIZING SESSIONS/WORKSHOPS:

Semantic Technologies for User Modeling and Adaptation
Special Issue of
User Modeling and User Adapted Interaction:
The Journal of Personalization Research
Guest editors: Nicola Henze and Gerd Stumme
http://www.kbs.uni-hannover.de/~henze/semtech.html
Deadline: January 31st, 2009
**************************************************************************
Recent trends in the semantic web focus on processing the meaning of
information as an additional, rich source for the ultimate goal to answer
information requests with appropriate, best fitting information. To this
end,
measurements are required which need to take into account the specific
information request, including the person behind the request, the personal
setting, preferences, and context of the person.
To bring semantic technologies to its full potential, the capturing of the
user's intention, and its modeling and representation in formats that
comply
with semantic standards are essential. This special issue of the User
Modeling
and User Adapted Interaction journal focuses on best practices, current
research
and promising trends for improving user modeling and adaptation with
semantic
technologies, and enhancing semantic technologies and applications
with user modeling and adaptation techniques. Relevant topics of this
special
issue particularly include the following ones:
Architectures:
Architectural solutions for user modeling and adaptation in
semantics-based,
cooperative information applications
User modeling and adaptation in architectures for web services and
semantic web services
Solutions for merging or bridging multiple adaptive applications
User Models:
Co-operation between de-centralized user models and user profiles,
syndication of user profile information
Semantic representation formats and languages for user intention
modeling
 Privacy protection through semantic information
User awareness and explanation strategies for transparent,
user-controlled user modeling
Personalization Techniques:
 Personalization as value-added services
Enhancing personalization algorithms with semantic technologies
Best practices and promising personalization techniques, re-usability,
and semantic descriptions of the personalization process
User awareness and explanation strategies for transparent,
user-controllable personalization
Personalized access to semantic web applications
 Personalization strategies in web 2.0
Analysis
Web mining (content, linkage, usage) and learning for detecting user
intentions
Analysis of user networks and web communities
Enablers
Reasoning about semantic information and user demands
Social nets and web communities for user modeling and adaptation
Folksonomies, taxonomies and ontologies as enablers of the user modeling
and personalization process
Applications
Applications demonstrating the power of semantic technologies for
advanced
user modeling and adaptation, e.g. personalized semantic search, the
personal
semantic desktop, personalized information filter, etc.
Submissions to this special issue need to enhance the state of the art in
both
disciplines, semantic web and semantic technologies as well as user
modeling
and adaptation. They are requested to bridge disciplines, e.g. by showing
how user
modeling and personalization benefits from semantic technologies, or how
user
modeling and adaptation techniques help to realize the semantic web.
How to Submit
Submissions to the special issue should follow the UMUAI formatting
guidelines
and submission instructions available at
http://www.umuai.org/paper_submission.html.
Each submission should note that it is intended for the special issue on
Semantic
Technologies for User Modeling and Adaptation.
Potential authors are asked to notify by email the guest editors as soon
as possible
of their intent to submit an article (see below for the relevant contact
information).
Sometime thereafter, but no later than a month prior to the submission
deadline,
they should submit a tentative title and a one-page abstract to allow for
feedback
and the formation of a reviewer panel. UMUAI is an archival journal that
publishes
mature and substantiated research results on the dynamic adaptation of
computer systems
to their human users, and the role that a model of the system about the
user plays in
this context. Many articles in UMUAI are quite comprehensive and describe
the results of
several years of work. Consequently, UMUAI gives unlimited space to
authors (so long
as what they write is important). Authors whose paper exceeds 40 pages in
journal format
(including illustrations and references) are however requested to supply a
short
justification upon submission that explains why a briefer discussion of
their
research results would not be advisable.
Review Process
Submissions will undergo the normal review process, and will be reviewed
by three
established researchers selected from a panel of reviewers formed for the
special issue.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Second International Workshop on Software Engineering for Computational Science and Engineering
Saturday, May 23, 2009
Co-located with ICSE 2009 - Vancouver, Canada
http://www.cs.ua.edu/~SECSE09 <http://www.cs.ua.edu/~SECSE09>
Overview
This workshop is concerned with the development of:
* Scientific software applications, where the focus is on directly solving scientific problems. These applications include, but are not limited to, large parallel models/simulations of the physical world (high performance computing systems).
* Applications that support scientific endeavors. Such applications include, but are not limited to, systems for managing and/or manipulating large amounts of data.
A particular software application might fit into both categories (for example, a weather forecasting system might both run climatology models and produce visualisations of big data sets) or just one (for example, nuclear simulations fit into the first category and laboratory information management software into the second). For brevity, we refer to both categories under the umbrella title of 'Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E)'.
Despite its importance in our everyday lives, CS&E has historically attracted little attention from the software engineering community. Indeed, the development of CS&E software differs significantly from the development of business information systems, from which many of the software engineering best practices, tools and techniques have been drawn. These differences include, for example:
· CS&E projects are often exploring unknown science, making it difficult to determine a concrete set of requirements a priori.
· For the same reason, a test oracle may not exist (for example, the physical data needed to validate a simulation may not exist). The lack of an oracle clearly poses challenges to the development of a testing strategy.
· The software development process for CS&E application development may differ profoundly from traditional software engineering processes. For example, one scientific computing workflow, dubbed the "lone researcher", involves a single scientist developing a system to test a hypothesis. Once the system runs correctly and returns its results, the scientist has no further need of the system. This approach contrasts with more typical software engineering lifecycle models, in which the useful life of the software is expected to begin, not end, after the first correct execution.
· CS&E applications often require more computing resources than are available on a typical workstation. Existing solutions for providing more computational resources (e.g., clusters, supercomputers, grids) can be difficult to use, resulting in additional software engineering challenges.
· CS&E developers may have no formal knowledge of software engineering tools and techniques, and may be developing software in a very isolated fashion. For example, it is common for a single scientist in a lab to take on the (formal or informal) role of software developer and to have to rely solely on web resources to acquire the relevant development knowledge.
Recent endeavors to bring the software engineering and CS&E communities together include two special issues of IEEE Software (July/August 2008 and January 2009) and this current ICSE workshop series. The 2008 workshop [http://www.ua.edu/~SECSE08 <http://www.ua.edu/~SECSE08> ] brought together computational scientists, software engineering researchers and software developers to explore issues such as:
· Those characteristics of CS&E which distinguish it from general business software development;
· The different contexts in which CS&E developments take place;
· The quality goals of CS&E;
· How the perceived chasm between the CS&E and software engineering communities might be bridged.
This 2009 workshop will build on the results of the previous workshop.
Similar to the format of the 2008 workshop, in addition to presentation and discussion of the accepted position papers, significant time during the 2009 workshop will be devoted to the continuation of discussions from previous workshops and to general open discussion.
Submission Instructions
We encourage submission of position papers or statements of interest from members of the software engineering and CS&E communities. Position papers of at most eight pages are solicited to address issues including but not limited to:

Workshop on Domain Engineering
In Conjunction with ICSE09
May 17th, Vancouver, Canada
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE@ICSE09/
Domain Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with building
reusable assets, such as specification sets, patterns, and components, in
specific domains. A domain in this context can be defined as an area of
knowledge that uses common concepts for describing phenomena,
requirements, problems, capabilities, and solutions. The purpose of domain
engineering is to identify, model, construct, catalog, and disseminate
artifacts that represent the commonalities and differences within a
domain. Although being applicable to different engineering disciplines,
domain engineering methods and domain specific languages (DSL) have been
recently receiving special attention in the software engineering era. Some
of the reasons for this interest are the increasing variability of
applications, the need to obtain and share expertise in different,
evolving domains, and the trend towards reusing software artifacts and
knowledge about them.
Domain engineering addresses two main layers: the domain layer, which
deals with the representation of domain elements, and the application
layer, which deals with the software applications and systems artifacts
related to the domain. More specifically, the programs, applications, and
systems are included in the application layer, whereas their common and
variable characteristics, as can be described, for example, by patterns or
emerging standards, are generalized and presented in the domain layer.
Similarly to software engineering, domain engineering includes three main
activities: domain analysis, domain design, and domain implementation,
which are carried out in the domain layer. However, domain engineering
also supports inter-layer activities, namely interactions that exist
between the domain and application layers. Specifically, domain layer
artifacts may be used for creation and validation of the specifications of
application layer artifacts, while applications may be generalized into
domain artifacts in a process of knowledge elicitation.
Domain engineering as a discipline has practical significance as it deals
with methods and techniques that may help reduce time-to-market, product
cost, and projects risks on one hand, and improve product quality and
performance on a consistent basis on the other hand.
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners in the area of domain engineering in order to define the
topic, identify possible points of synergy, common problems and solutions,
and discuss visions for the future of the area. In particular, the
workshop will focus on the interaction between information systems
engineering and domain engineering.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
· Methods and techniques to support domain engineering
· Product line lifecycle engineering
· Development and management of domain assets
· Domain-driven software engineering
· Testing, modeling, and formal verification of domain and application
artifacts.
· Application derivation (i.e., how to use domain artifacts in the
application layer)
· Variability management
· Domain-specific languages, frameworks, and architectures
· Domain engineering techniques in support of reuse, validation, and
knowledge management
· Theoretical and empirical evaluation of domain engineering methods and
techniques
· Case studies and practice reports related to domain engineering
Submission Guidelines
Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a paper related to
the purpose of the workshop. The workshop will accept three types of
submissions:
1. Completed Research this type of papers should include evidence to
support the contribution (e.g. in the form of data analysis, proof of
concept, or case studies) and discussion on research findings and their
theoretical and practical significance. The paper should not exceed 5,000
words (excluding references and appendices). Accepted completed research
papers will be allocated 30 minutes for presentation (including questions
& answers) during the workshop.
2. Research-In-Progress this type of papers can report on research that
is under way with preliminary results available at the time of the
conference. The paper should not exceed 2,500 words (excluding references
and appendices). Accepted research-in-progress papers will be allocated 15
minutes for presentation (including questions & answers) during the
workshop.
3. Position papers this type of papers can include lucid and
well-supported statements and suggestions on domain engineering, e.g.,
directions for the discipline, open questions, criticism on the
state-of-the-art, and novel approaches. Accepted position papers will be
allocated 15 minutes for presentation (including questions & answers)
during the workshop.
All three types of papers may refer to theoretical and/or practical
issues.
Papers must conform to the ICSE 2009 format (see
http://www.cs.uoregon.edu/events/icse2009/calls/format/). The paper type
(completed research, research-in-progress, or a position paper) should
explicitly be indicated after the paper title. In addition, the paper
abstract should not be longer than 150 words. As the workshop will apply
double-blind reviews process, the papers should not indicate their
authors. Papers should be submitted through the on-line system at
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE@ICSE09/DE_ICSE09_Submission.htm..
Publication
The paper selection will be based upon the relevance of a paper to the
main topics, on its quality and on the potential to stimulate discussion
in the workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the online ICSE'2009
workshop proceedings. In addition, authors of some selected papers will be
asked to consider submitting revised version of the papers as chapters in
a book on Domain Engineering to be edited by the workshop co-chairs and
published by Springer.
