Indeed, we are inundated with theories. Most of these come from reference disciplines - Biology, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, ... It occurs to me that a typology of theories appropriate for IS would be a very valuable resource for IS researchers. I am not aware of such a resource (whether on line or published) in IS. Attempts have been made to develop such resources in other disciplines: see for example "Van de Ven and Poole (1995) Explaining Development and Change in Organisations, Academy of Management Review, 20, 3, 510-540". I would like to invite you to send me the theories that you use in your research, preferably with a short explanation of what the theory proposes. Key references about a) the development and b) the application of the theory would be particularly valuable. I will present these resources for the ISWORLD community as is customary, probably as a web page. INTERACTIVE POSTERS: Interactive Posters provide an opportunity for researchers to present work in a more open format where authors interact directly with groups of conference attendees. We especially encourage submission of late-breaking and preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a full paper, innovative ideas not yet validated through user studies, student research, and other research best presented in this open format. Interactive Poster submissions should include a poster abstract of no longer than 2 pages, including all figures and references. DEMONSTRATIONS: Demonstrations allow conference participants to view novel or noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with those who created them, and perhaps to try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include applications, technologies, research prototypes and products. This forum is not an opportunity for marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the differentiating and novel contributions of the system. Demo proposals should be a maximum of 4 pages. PANELS: Panels should examine innovative, provocative, controversial, or late-breaking issues. The best panels are often structured as a debate with an opportunity for audience participation. We also welcome novel suggestions of topics or formats such as impromptu design by a panel or comparative empirical analyses by expert panelists who have divergent perspectives. DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM: This Colloquium is a forum in which Ph.D. students can meet and discuss their work with each other and a panel of experienced CSCW researchers and practitioners. We welcome applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches that inform CSCW, including sociology, computer science, cognitive science, and related fields. However, much of this work has focused on technology and engineering issues, and on the motivations driving individual developers to participate in open source projects. Although there is evidence of wide-spread industry adoption of both open source products and of open source processes and models, little research has been done to better understand the role of open source software in mainstream business organisations and on the cost, maintenance, economics and legal issues arising from Open Source. For this special issue of SIM, we extend an open call for completed, original research on one or more of the following topics (or related areas): * Motivations, dynamics and challenges associated with the adoption of open source products by organisation. * Motivations, dynamics and challenges associated with the adoption of open source processes and business models by organisations. * Legal issues associated with the use of open source software products and processes, particularly intellectual property issues. * Human issues associated with the use of open source software products and processes, such as training and technology acceptance. * Issues of cost and maintenance associated with adoption of open source software.
