Call for Papers and Participation
ECSCW 2001
(European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work)
Bonn, Germany, September 16, 2001
Workshop on
Actions and Identities in Virtual Communities of Practice
http://www-staff.it.uts.edu.au/~lueg/ecscw2001.html
Organizers:
Christopher Lueg, University of Technology Sydney
Elisabeth Davenport, Napier University
Toni Robertson, University of Technology Sydney
Volkmar Pipek, University of Bonn
Workshop theme and background
Communities of practice are a hot topic in CSCW and knowledge management
as they have been identified as social groups that support effective
information and knowledge sharing as well as learning. As the number of
physically distributed groups have increased so has the interest in the
concept of virtual communities of practice.
This workshop will explore an aspect of virtual communities of practice
that we consider important for understanding these social groups. The
question is where the actions are in virtual communities of practice. Our
focus is the relations between the locations of activity in virtual
communities of practice. In particular, we want to investigate if and how
it matters that activities in physical space create and maintain
interaction in virtual communities of practice.
In order to investigate virtual communities of practice, we need to draw
from several research areas. We know from sociology that humans are social
beings that tend to form communities and we know from research in virtual
communities that humans are able to form such communities in the virtual.
We also know that ``communities of practice'' may emerge whenever people
work together. However, social participation - as a constituent of
communities of practice - is not just engaging in certain activities, such
as working in a team, but actively participating in the practices of
social communities and constructing identities in relation to these
communities.
Such participation shapes not just what participants do but also
self-perception and understanding of their own activities, i.e., their
identities within specific communities of practice. Apparently,
communication and socialisation can happen in the virtual to some extent.
The action, however, still happens in the real world when interacting with
the physical and social environment.
2 Goals and objectives
The overall goal of the workshop is to develop our understanding of the
relations between virtual socialising and activities in the physical
world, especially with regard to learning. Potential topics to investigate
are as follows:
- Is the concept of communities of practice well-suited to be applied to
virtual communities? Research indicates that communities of practice are
only one specific social group among several that support information
and knowledge sharing. Other groups, such as communities of interest,
communities of purpose, and communities of passion or distributed
communities of practice, might be more suitable to describe virtual
settings. As these groups are not mutually exclusive, it might be
difficult to allocate a specific concept to a particular social setting,
such as newsgroups.
- Research in embodied cognitive science stresses the importance of
physical presence and bodily interaction with the environment. However,
bodily experiences and tacit knowledge are hard to communicate and we
are interested in what ways these communication ``problems'' matter in
the context of virtual communities of practice.
- ``Identity'' is an important aspect of communities of practice and in
the context of virtual communities of practice, the role of identity has
received less attention than in the context of real world communities of
practice. The interesting thing with virtual communities of practice is
that identities would not only form in the interaction
with the virtual community but also in the interaction with the ``real''
social environment.
With the Internet, virtual communities use a medium which is not
transparent to its participants. Communicating and acting in virtual
communities is to some extent bound to the tools used by the community.
Representations of persons, actions, artifacts, the communication flow,
argumentation lines, etc. may play an important role in building
identities and practices as well as in learning. We are also interested in
the interdependencies between the tools (the medium) and the different
dimensions of learning (as belonging, as becoming, as experience, and as
doing) connected with the concept of communities of practice. And, as a
consequence, what we can learn for tool design.
3 Intended participants
Participants should be familiar with either ``communities of practice'' or
``virtual communities'' but we do not expect participants to be experts in
these particular areas. The ``action'' issue, in particular, demands an
interdisciplinary perspective so that the workshop could benefit from a
broad range of backgrounds from cognitive science to social sciences.
Participants are requested to submit /either/ a position paper (1-2 pages)
stating background and interest in the workshop /or/ a 1-page position
paper and a full paper that is suitable for publication. The position
papers will be structured into a number of moderated discussion threads
which will contribute to a summary of issues and positions at the end of
the panel. Also, the position papers will be made available on the
workshop home page. We intend to submit the full papers as a collection for
publication. Lawrence Erlbaum expressed interest to publish such a
collection.
Submissions (only PDF or postscript please) should be sent to the contact
address listed above.

Call for Papers
Second International Workshop
on Electronic Commerce (WELCOM'01)
Mobility and Electronic Commerce
http://www.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/GK/welcom/
November 16-17, 2001
Heidelberg, Germany
In Conjunction with:
IFIP/ACM International Conference on
Distributed Systems Platforms (Middleware 2001)
http://www.labs.agilent.com/middleware2001/
(A cooperation with ACM SIGMOBILE is under preparation)
SCOPE
Electronic Commerce is one of the most important challenges in business
development and one of the driving forces behind the fast development of
the
Internet. The dawn of next generation mobile networks and the
substantial
investments in the respective licenses generate an immense demand for
new
solutions and applications while opening a completely new domain of
research. Portable information appliances will accompany us everywhere
and
they will be important front-ends to electronic commerce applications.
E-commerce is expected to reshape the way business is conducted and the
technical infrastructure has to be adapted to the requirements posed by
electronic commerce scenarios. In the networked economy
information-driven
architectures set out for providing the high flexibility necessary to
construct customized electronic services, reconfigurable inter-company
relationships, and Internet-wide scalability. If mobility is really such
an
important field, all research in EC must ask how it is influenced by the
mobility aspect. The interrelationship between discussions about
processes in
electronic commerce and aspects of mobile commerce must be emphasized.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers, engineers
and
practitioners to discuss the development of technical concepts,
products, and
infrastructures for electronic commerce. Main topics are the
architectures of
electronic commerce applications and mobility in electronic commerce.
This workshop will provide a forum to meet and discuss the technical and
technology related issues of e-commerce. Suggested topics for research

Subject: Final CfP: Special session on standards - LCN
Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 13:06:32 +0000
From: Kai Jakobs <Kai.Jakobs(a)i4.informatik.rwth-aachen.de>
To: ISWORLD(a)LISTSERV.HEANET.IE
Hello All,
This CfP is probably most interesting for the rather more
'technically inclined':
LCN 2001, the 26th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks,
is planning to include - for the first time - a session on problems
and issues related to standards and standardisation within its domain
(see below).
Don't be put off by the conference title - this is more of a historic
remains. Just have a look at the topics listed in the Call (further
information may be found at http://www.ieeelcn.org/).
If you happen to work on standards in networking and telecommunication,
this might be a good opportunity for you (and going to Florida in
November doesn't seem to be such a bad idea either .........)
If you need further information please do ask. Oh, and if you are
planning to submit something, please let me know.
I look forward to many interesting submissions.
Cheers,
Kai.

(Apologies if you receive multiple copies)
17th ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC 2002)
Special Track on Coordination Models, Languages and Applications
March 10-13, 2002
Madrid, SPAIN
(http://lia.deis.unibo.it/confs/sac02/)
SAC 2002
~~~~~~~~
Over the past sixteen years, the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing
(SAC) has become a primary forum for applied computer scientists and
application developers from around the world to interact and present
their work. SAC 2002 is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on
Applied Computing (SIGAPP) and is presented in cooperation with other
ACM Special Interest Groups. SAC 2002 is hosted by the Universidad
Carlos III de Madrid, Spain.
Authors are invited to contribute original papers in all areas of
experimental computing and application development for the technical
sessions. There will be a number of special tracks on such issues as
Programming Languages, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Agent
Systems, Multimedia and Visualization, etc.
Coordination Models, Languages and Applications Track
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Building on the success of the four previous editions (1998-2001), a
special track on coordination models, languages and applications
will be held at SAC 2002. Over the last decade, we have witnessed the
emergence of models, formalisms and mechanisms to describe concurrent
and distributed computations and systems based on the concept of
coordination. The purpose of a coordination model is to enable the
integration of a number of possibly heterogeneous components
(processes, objects, agents) in such a way that the resulting ensemble
can execute as a whole, forming a software system with desired
characteristics and functionalities which possibly takes advantage of
parallel and distributed systems. The coordination paradigm is closely
related to other contemporary software engineering approaches such as
component-based systems and middleware platforms. Furthermore, the
concept of coordination exists in many other Computer Science areas
such as Cooperative Information Systems, Distributed Artificial
Intelligence, and Internet Technologies.
The Special Track on Coordination Models, Languages and Applications
deliberately takes a broad view of what is coordination: this term
covers here traditional models and languages (e.g., the ones based on
the Shared Dataspace and CHAM metaphors), but also other related
notions and formalisms such as configuration and architectural
description frameworks, models of multi-agent planning, organization
and decision-making, systems modeling abstractions and languages,
programming skeletons, etc.
Correspondingly, in addition to the traditional areas covering data-
driven (such as Linda) and control-driven (such as Manifold) models
and languages, this Special Track aims at putting together
contributions from all the many areas where the concept of coordination
is relevant, such as multi-agent systems, software architectures,
middleware platforms, groupware and workflow management, etc,
providing them with a common forum where to discuss their different
viewpoints and share ideas. On this very subject, it is worth to
remind that the last editions of this Track were undoubtedly successful
under many points of view, but in particular in attracting relevant
and consistent contributions from many different research communities.

Guidelines for Submission
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Original papers from the above-mentioned or other related areas will
be considered. This includes three categories of submissions: 1)
original and unpublished research; 2) reports of innovative computing
applications in the arts, sciences, engineering, business, government,
education and industry; and 3) reports of successful technology
transfer to new problem domains. Each submitted paper will be fully
refereed and undergo a blind review process by at least three
referees. The accepted papers in all categories will be published in
the ACM SAC 2002 proceedings.
Submission guidelines must be strictly followed:
* Submit your paper *electronically* in either PDF or postscript
format to one of the Track Program Chairmen of the Special Track
on Coordination Models, Languages and Applications (addresses are
shown above). Please *note*: neither hardcopy nor fax submissions
will be accepted. Submissions should be printable on a standard
printer on common paperformats like letter and DIN A4. Please use
a Postscript previewer such as Ghostview to check the portability
of Postscript documents. The acceptable compression formats for
submissions are Zip and Tar.
* The author(s) name(s) and address(es) must not appear in the body
of the paper, and self-reference should be in the third person.
This is to facilitate blind review.
* The body of the paper should not exceed 5,000 words (approximately
15 pages, double-spaced).
* A separate cover sheet (in the case of electronic submission this
should be sent separately from the main paper) should show the
title of the paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s),
and the address (including e-mail, telephone, and fax) to which
correspondence should be sent.
* All submissions must be received by September 1, 2001.
ACM SIGIR 2001 WORKSHOP
ON
MATHEMATICAL/FORMAL METHODS IN INFORMATION RETRIEVAL
MF/IR 2001
New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.
September 13, 2001
OBJECTIVE
The previous workshop (ACM SIGIR 2000 MF/IR 2000 Workshop, Athens,
Greece) showed that the mathematical/formal results achieved in
Information Retrieval (IR) could be organized into a coherent
theoretical framework, that they brought new knowledge to IR, and that
mathematical/formal research in IR can stand as a specialized research
area of IR.
The purpose of the MF/IR 2001 workshop is, on the one hand, to continue
and enhance the results obtained so far, and on the other hand, to
present, discuss, analyze, integrate the newer/newest results. Therefore
MF/IR 2001 aims at promoting discussion and interaction among those with
theoretical and applicative research interests in mathematical/formal
aspects of Information Retrieval, and also at being a forum for the
presentation of both theoretical and applicative results (e.g.,
foundational issues; description and/or integration of models; retrieval
applications; mathematical/formal techniques, properties and structures
in IR; existing and/or new theories and theoretical aspects).
TOPICS OF INTEREST
Contributions (papers, talks) are solicited dealing with, but not
limited to, the following areas:
Information Retrieval
Information Filtering
Information Mining
Indexing and Retrieval
Hypermedia
World Wide Web Retrieval
Digital Libraries
Evaluation
Human Computer Interaction
User Modeling
where the different entities involved (e.g., documents, queries,
indexing, retrieval, relevance, effectiveness, users, etc.) are modeled
using any of, but not necessarily limited to, the following approaches:
Classical Sets
Fuzzy Sets
Rough Sets
Vectors
Linear Space
Similarity Functions
Probability
Functional Analysis
Algebra
Topology
Metric Spaces
Boolean Logic
Non-standard Logics
Fuzzy Logic
Quantum Logic
To: undisclosed-recipients:;
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen in der WKWI,
aktuelle Integrationsansätze wie Customer Relationship Management (CRM) und
Supply Chain Management (SCM) erfordern von Informationssystemen und
Organisationen eine Öffnung in Richtung Kunden und Kooperationspartner.
Ich möchte Sie daher zu unserer 5. Fachtagung "Handelsinformationssysteme"
am 22. und 23. Mai im Schloss der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster
einladen, welche die Fragestellung genauer untersucht.
Es ist uns gelungen, für den Konferenzteil wiederum hochkarätige Vertreter
von Handelsunternehmen, der Softwareindustrie, von Unternehmensberatungen
und aus der Wissenschaft zu gewinnen, die über Konzepte und Erfahrungen aus
erster Hand berichten. Vertreter aus der Forschung runden die Tagung mit
wissenschaftlichen Betrachtungen des Themas ab. Die Abendveranstaltung am
22. Mai bietet Gelegenheit, die geknüpften Kontakte zu vertiefen. Begleitet
wird die Tagung von einer Industrieausstellung, die zum Dialog mit
Unternehmen wie Atos Origin, Bäurer Trade, bil Consult, BOG, NCR, OC&C,
Remira IT, SAS, Software City und Wincor Nixdorf einlädt.
Als Mitglied der Wissenschaftlichen Kommission Wirtschaftsinformatik sind
Sie Ehrengast und von der Tagungsgebühr befreit. Ihre Studenten haben die
Möglichkeit, für 100 EURO (zzgl. USt) am ganzen Programm der Tagung
teilzunehmen. Für Studenten, die auf die Mittagessen sowie die
