: THE INFORMATION SOCIETY
: Special Issue Call for Papers
: "TIME AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY"
:
: Joint Editors for Special Issue: Heejin Lee, Brunel University,
: United Kingdom and Edgar A Whitley, London School of Economics
: and Political Science, United Kingdom
:
: Deadline for submission: June 26th 2000
:
: Traditional notions of time and space are being challenged by
: information technology based phenomena such as the internet,
: globalisation of business and virtual work.
:
: Whilst it is easy to simply describe the temporal effects
: of these changes in terms of everything being faster,
: in practice the changes are much more fundamental. Indeed,
: a useful comparison can be made with the wholesale
: transformation of time perception and time discipline that arose
: when mechanical clocks were introduced into societies that had
: previously based their notions of temporality on the seasonal
: passage of the sun.
:
: Thus, it is possible to consider time not simply as an objective,
: clock-time based phenomenon, which is typically used as a constant
: or an independent variable in studies. Instead, time can be viewed
: as a subjective, socially constructed phenomenon which can be
: studied as a dependent variable.
:
: This special issue of TIS hopes to further research and discussion
: on time and information technology by publishing papers on aspects
: of this theme from diverse viewpoints.
:
: Papers of empirical research (either qualitative or quantitative)
: are welcomed as are theoretical papers that provide new insights
: or state of the art reviews that cover diverse disciplines.
:
: For further information, and submission details, please
: see http://www.brunel.ac.uk/~cssthhl/tis_cfp.htm
:
: Feel free to correspond with the special issue editors if you have
: any questions or are planning to submit an article.

: Autonomous Agents 2000
: Workshop
: DECEPTION, FRAUD AND TRUST IN AGENT SOCIETIES
:
:
: 3 or 4 June, 2000
: Barcelona
:
: Trust underlies all interactions among autonomous agents, whether
: human or artificial. However, most existing research on agents
: assumes full trust among the agents. This is rarely justified in
: practical applications. Indeed, human societies have evolved a number
: of subtle approaches to reduce deception and fraud in human
: communications, exchanges and relations, and hence to assure trust
: between agents. The expansion of electronic commerce, however,
: magnifies the problems of trust, because agents reach out far beyond
: their familiar trade environments and may often interact with others
: whom they have never met and who might have only acquired a temporary
: identity. The notion of trust has obvious relationships with the
: concepts of agency, rationality, and risk, among others. Simple
: formulations of it can lead to all sorts of conundrums.
:
: The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers from different
: fields (AI, MAS, Cognitive Science, Game Theory, Social and Organizational
: Sciences, and so on) that can
: contribute to a better understanding of trust and deception in agent
: societies. In this perspective, the workshop scope ranges over all aspects
: of trust including
: theoretical results on trust as well as its application in agent
: applications such as human-computer interaction and electronic commerce.
:
: Suggested topics include, but are not restricted to:
: models of trust and of its functions
: models of deception and of its functions
: models of fraud
: role of trust and trusted third parties (TTP) in electronic commerce
: defensive strategies and mechanisms
: ways to detect and prevent deception and fraud
: secure transactions over the network
:
: Papers should not exceed 12 pages and should be sent to one of the program
: cochairs, Munindar Singh <singh(a)ncsu.edu> or Yao Hua Tan
: <ytan(a)fac.fbk.eur.nl> with a cc to Rino Falcone
: <falcone(a)ip.rm.cnr.it>. The preferred mode of submission is as a URL
: to a pdf file; if that is impossible, the submission can be sent as an
: email attachment.
:
: Revised papers from previous editions of this workshop have resulted
: in a book published by Kluwer and a special issue of a journal.
: Similar venues for publication will be explored for this workshop.

:
: ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ: CALL FOR PAPERS
: ----------------------------------------------------------------------
: TAPD2000
: 2nd Workshop on 'Tabulation in Parsing and Deduction'
: ----------------------------------------------------------------------
:
: September 2000
: Vigo, Spain
:
: Sponsored by University of Vigo
:
: WEB page: http://coleweb.dc.fi.udc.es/tapd2000/
:
: Following TAPD'98 in Paris (France) next TAPD event will be held in
: Vigo (Spain), in September, 2000.
:
: MOTIVATIONS:
:
: Tabulation techniques are becoming a common way to deal with highly
: redundant computations occurring, for instance, in Natural Language
: Processing, Logic Programming, Deductive Databases, or Abstract
: Interpretation, and related to phenomena such as ambiguity,
: non-determinism or domain ordering.
:
: Different approaches, including for example Chart Parsing, Magic-Set
: rewriting, Memoization, and Dynamic Programming, have been proposed
: whose key idea is to keep traces of computations to achieve
: computation sharing and loop detection. In addition, tabulation also
: offers more flexibility to investigate new parsing or proof strategies
: and to represent ambiguity by shared structures (Shared Proof or Parse
: Forest).
:
: The first objective of this workshop is to compare and discuss these
: different approaches. The second objective is to present tabulation
: and tabular systems to potential users in different application
: areas. One major area of application is Natural Language Processing,
: where tabulation has been known for a long time (CKY, Earley, chart
: parsing). However, sophisticated tabulation techniques are required
: for the more and more complex grammatical formalisms now used in NLP
: (unification, constraints, structural complexity). Contributions in
: other areas, such as picture parsing, genome analysis, or complete
: deduction techniques, are also encouraged.
:
: TOPICS (not exclusive):
:
: -- Tabulation Techniques:
: Chart Parsing, Tabling, Memoization, Dynamic Programming,
: Magic Set, Generic Fix-Point Algorithms
: -- Applications:
: Parsing, Generation, Logic Programming, Deductive Databases,
: Abstract Interpretation, Deduction in Knowledge Bases, Theorem Proving
: -- Static Analysis:
: Improving tabular evaluation
: -- Parsing or resolution strategies.
: -- Efficiency issues:
: Dealing with large tables (structure sharing, term indexing),
: Execution models, Exploiting the domain ordering (subsumption).
: -- Shared structures (parse or proof forest):
: Formal analysis, representation and processing.
:
: WORKSHOP FORMAT:
:
: The workshop will be a 3-day event that provides a forum for
: individual presentations of the accepted contributions as well as
: group discussions.
:
: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
:
: Authors are invited to submit before April 28 a 4-page position
: paper or abstract concerning a theoretical contribution or a system to
: be presented. Due to tight time constraints, submission and reviewing
: will be handled exclusively electronically (LaTeX, PostScript, dvi or
: ascii format). Submission should include the title, authors' names,
: affiliations, addresses, and e-mail.
:
: The submissions must be sent to David S. Warren (warren(a)cs.sunysb.edu) in
: gziped encoded postscript.
:
: SCHEDULE (tentative dates):
:
: Submission of contributions: April 28, 2000
: Notification of acceptance: June 1, 2000
: Final versions due: June 30, 2000

: EM: Electronic Markets: Vol. 10, Issue 4
:
: Editor-in-Chief: Beat F. Schmid
:
: Guest Editors:
: Ulrike Lechner
: Katarina Stanoevska-Slabeva
: Yao-Hua Tan
:
: Dear Colleagues:
:
: EM - Electronic Markets: The International
: Journal of Electronic Commerce & Business Media
: is a key forum for advancing the understanding
: and practice of electronic markets and commerce.
:
: The objective in this issue is to explore community
: building and community development, i.e., community
: management as a key success factor in the digital
: economy. It differentiates business models in the
: digital economy from traditional ones.
:
: These communities may be constituted as Internet
: shops, portal sites, groupware systems,
: electronic auctions or billboards.
: Product-centered communities as well as communities
: of interest are relevant for electronic marketing,
: as for example the reader communities at Amazon.com,
: The Well, or Dreamworks. Another example are
: communities that form value chains, such as single
: product manufacturing consortia or flexible
: consumer-driven organization of global supply chains.
: Further examples are topic and technology oriented
: communities such as Open-EDI trading communities,
: Open Trading on the Internet (OTP), or EDI/XML,
: in addition to the community-oriented programming
: of Linux.
:
: As the mentioned examples show, online communities
: differ in their orientation. The features, that
: all types of communities share are common
: interests, practices, languages and ontologies
: with common semantics as well as normative issues.
:
: The new type of online community is driven by
: platforms that make use of the new digital media.
: Moreover, there is a close connection between
: platform design, community management, and business
: models. The successful business model is the one
: that recognizes and structures the goals and values
: of the community and the successful platform is
: the one that supports these with services. For
: example, in the setting of supply chain management,
: services and quality of these services are essential
: values, whereas in the case of online selling
: communities, rating systems or recommendation
: systems are pivotal.
:
: We are calling for papers that address communities,
: their platforms and community-related business
: models as critical success factors in the digital
: economy. In particular strategies, frameworks,
: platforms and visions that support the management
: of communities are of interest. Possible topics
: include, but are not limited to:
:
: 1. Community-related business models
: 2. Design principles for community platforms
: 3. Case studies and topologies of online
: communities
: 4. Best practices and lessons learned
:
: Some of the papers will be culled from two
: minitracks of HICSS 2000 "Communities in
: Electronic Commerce: Concepts, Models and Formal
: Aspects" and "Community Supporting Platforms".
:
: EM accepts short papers up to 2500 words, or long
: papers up to 5000 words. Please refer to the
: Contributors' section for more information at
: http://www.electronicmarkets.org
:
: The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2000.

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track "Telecommunication Networks"
:
: Perhaps the most profound impact on business and personal productivity,
: since the introduction of the personal computer, has been the increasing
: voice, video, and data connectivity. This interaction may bring about a
: fundamental change in the way we live in the 21st century. In addition to
: technological improvements that support communication of a variety of
: media, a great convergence of technologies like televisions, telephones,
: computers, and networks continues. Although the growth of
: telecommunications over the past decade has been phenomenal, we expect that
: the explosion of telecommunications applications is still to come. The
: target infrastructure for many of these advanced applications is the
: Internet -- a system based on a 1981 IETF specification -- very much an
: anomaly in the rapidly changing technology world. This minitrack provides a
: broad platform to explore all technical aspects of telecommunications and
: networking that support transmission of voice, video, and/or data.
:
: Possible Topics may include the following:
: * IP Networks & Performance
: * Difficulties with Transition to IPv6
: * Internet2
: * Quality of Service
: * Pricing issues
: * Wireless Networks (Architecture, Design, Protocols, Network Interconnection)
: * Multimedia support
: * Network Management
: * Reliability
: * Mobility
: * Protocol Analysis
: * Congestion Control
: * Network Design
: * Routing and Scheduling
: * Simulation

: </a></font></u>Perhaps the most profound impact on business and personal
: productivity, since the introduction of the personal computer, has been
: the increasing voice, video, and data connectivity. This interaction may
: bring about a fundamental change in the way we live in the 21st century.
: In addition to technological improvements that support communication of a
: variety of media, a great convergence of technologies like televisions,
: telephones, computers, and networks continues. Although the growth of
: telecommunications over the past decade has been phenomenal, we expect
: that the explosion of telecommunications applications is still to come.
: The target infrastructure for many of these advanced applications is the
: Internet -- a system based on a 1981 IETF specification -- very much an
: anomaly in the rapidly changing technology world. This minitrack provides
: a broad platform to explore all technical aspects of telecommunications
: and networking that support transmission of voice, video, and/or
: data.<br>
: <br>
: Possible Topics may include the following: <br>
: * IP Networks & Performance <br>
: * Difficulties with Transition to IPv6 <br>
: * Internet2 <br>
: * Quality of Service <br>
: * Pricing issues <br>

: * Reliability <br>
: * Mobility <br>
: * Protocol Analysis <br>
: * Congestion Control <br>
: * Network Design <br>
: * Routing and Scheduling <br>

: AMCIS 2000
: Americas Conference on Information Systems
: Long Beach, California
: August 10th - 13th, 2000
:
: Call for Papers (and Mini-Panel) for the Mini Track
: "The Changing Skills Portfolio - Managing Organizational Needs for IT
: Professionals"
:
: (CFP is also available at http://www.depaul.edu/~nsutcli1/AMCIS2000)
:
: Faced with the dramatic growth of new technologies, the IT skills portfolio
: is rapidly changing and evolving. Both firms and IT professionals have
: difficult choices in meeting the needs for IT skills.
:
: Shortages of IT professionals are in both established and emerging
: technologies. How do firms then determine the priority for filling their
: needs in both short and long terms? What are the appropriate hiring
: strategies to identify and attract personnel with the right skill sets?
: Under what circumstances, do firms want to use the "re-tooling" strategy for
: their internal IT professionals? What are the "best practices" for
: retaining highly skilled IT professionals? Firms also face conflicting
: pressures; they need slack resources so they can respond to competitive
: challenges, and they also need to contain labor costs.
:
: On the individual level, what is available to an IT professional for
: determining and establishing a skills portfolio that fits well with career
: goals? What strategies and tactics do IT professionals use to meet their
: personal needs and to succeed under changing economic conditions?
:
: How can education respond to meeting the needs of the individual and the
: organization? What role do educational institutions play in meeting these
: needs at the societal level? How is the role influenced by international
: economic forces?
:
: Sample (but not exclusive) topics include:
:
: - Trends of needed IT skill compositions in the short and long term
: - The implications of current trends for firms, IT professionals and
: education
: - Determining and managing appropriate skill portfolios at the firm level
: - Hiring/outsourcing considerations given a firm's current and desired skill
: portfolio
: - Strategies for retaining highly skilled IT professionals
: - Compensation and career path strategies for IT professionals in the 21st
: century
: - Outsourcing strategies given rapid growth and market uncertainty
: -IT education needs at the global level in the 21st century
: - Roles, opportunities and challenges for IT/IS education
:
: This mini-track also calls for a mini-panel proposal. It should include:
: (1) panel topic(s), (2) key issues to be discussed, (3) panel discussion
: questions, and (4) panel members. A topic addressing industry issues is
: particularly welcomed.
