: Call for Papers for the Mini Track -
: Workflow Technology and E-Commerce Applications
: ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
:
: Workflow technology helps organizations improve efficiency by automating
: business processes and achieving better process control by standardizing
: working methods and providing audit trails. Workflow technology and
: management is an emerging research area in engineering and business.
: Major software vendors such as Oracle and SAP are now including a workflow
: component in their software suites. As a result, managing workflow
: technology becomes an urgent topic facing corporate managers.
:
: E-commerce applications of workflow technology are more challenging than
: enterprise workflow applications because e-commerce requires process
: automation across organizational boundaries. An inter-organizational
: environment makes workflow automation issues such as heterogeneity,
: integration, interoperability, scalability, and security, much more
: important.
:
: In this mini track, we concentrate on workflow technology and management
: in e-commerce. Sample topic areas for the mini track include the
: following:
:
: * Implementation of workflow technology in e-commerce systems
: * The effectiveness of workflow technology in e-commerce
: * Workflow-based architectures for e-commerce implementation
: * Supply chain integration through workflow automation
: * Transformation of procurement process
: * Workflow system deployment in inter-organizational environment
: * Integration of manual, semi-automated, and fully automated sub-workflow
: systems
: * Economic tradeoffs in the adoption of workflow technology
: * Internet-based workflow systems
: * Organizational modeling in workflow systems
: * Flexibility issues in workflow systems
: * Light weight workflow management systems
: * XML applications in workflow technology
: * UML and workflow modeling
:
: We invite papers that address any of the areas listed above, as well as
: any related issues. A range of research methodologies including
: conceptual, case analysis, implementation, lab experiments, and surveys
: would be appropriate.

:
: INTRODUCTION:
:
: The increasing use of networking, coupled with an increasing distribution in the
: operations of organisations, results in increasing problems of administration,
: management and control of information and co-ordination of work. With the aim of
: providing solution to such problems, research into Computer Supported
: Co-operative Work (CSCW) is concerned with investigating approaches and
: technologies for the support of group work, both within and among organisations,
: in which the group members may be distributed geographically.
: In parallel with the advances made in CSCW in recent years there have been
: interesting developments in the fields of Intelligent Agents and Distributed
: Artificial Intelligence (DAI), notably in the concepts, theories and deployment
: of intelligent agents as a means of distributing computer-based problem solving
: expertise. The concept of intelligent agents has given rise to an exciting new
: technology of wide potential applicability. In particular, the paradigm of
: multi-agent systems, which is also a focus of interest for researchers in
: distributed artificial intelligence, forms a good basis for
: (i) the design of CSCW architectures, and
: (ii) the support of CSCW operations.
: The application of a multi-agent approach to CSCW can help to make information
: exchange among the participants easier, provide support to the participants
: (e.g. in the form of Decision Support Systems), assist workflows and procedures,
: and represent the user in a CSCW system.
: But, the introduction of intelligent agents into CSCW systems as well as into
: legacy information systems leads to potential new risks, e.g. unauthorised
: information gain, unauthorised modification of information, unauthorised
: derogation of functionality, or inadmissible loss of connection. Endowing agents
: with intelligence increases the risks and threats, compared with conventional
: communications and information systems.
:
: SUBMISSION:
:
: Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
: - user agents in CSCW systems
: - DAI architectures and CSCW systems,
: - security aspects of agent-based CSCW systems,
: - intelligent agents in CSCW (e.g. for decision support,
: coordination, automation)
: - applications of agent-based/mediated CSCW
:
: Contributions to the workshop should not exceed 8 pages in length and should be
: emailed (electronic version) or posted (paper version, 5 copies) to one of the
: contact persons below.
: Final versions must conform to the ACM format. Formatting instructions can be
: found at http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html
:
: All accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. In addition,
: we will invite authors of selected papers to submit an extended versions of
: their paper for a subsequent publication in a special issue of an international
: journal.

: "Data Mining and Information Retrieval in Business"
:
: With the advent of new technologies and business practices, including the
: explosion of electronic commerce and the trend toward mass personalization,
: businesses are searching for new ways to make sense of massive, and
: increasing,
: amounts of data. Data mining allows businesses to ascertain patterns in data
: that indicate consumer buying habits, competitor strategies, credit
: worthiness,
: incidence of fraud, and other information of strategic importance. This
: mini-track seeks to provide a forum for researchers to share investigations
: and
: ideas in the diverse field of data mining. Current research in data mining
: explores areas related to algorithm development and performance, the data
: mining process, and the impact of data mining on business practices, among
: others. Information Retrieval (IR) algorithms support computerized search of
: large document collections (i.e., millions of documents) to retrieve small
: subsets relevant to the user's information needs. Examples are book searching
: in electronic bookstores and auctions, digital library catalogues and Internet
: search engines. IR Application areas include: cross language retrieval,
: speech/broadcast retrieval, text categorization, and text summarization. IR
: algorithms are subject to objective testing and evaluation for hundreds of
: queries on millions of documents (the TREC set and conferences, for example).
:
: Possible Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
:
: * Mining of multimedia data, including image, video and sound data
: * New/hybrid algorithms for data mining
: * Performance evaluation of data mining methods
: * Aligning data mining with task objectives and business strategy
: * The impact of data mining on e-commerce strategies
: * Mining of internet-based data

: [NOTE NEW DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS.]
:
: CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: The First International Workshop on
:
: AGENT-ORIENTED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (AOSE-2000)
:
: June 10, 1999 - Limerick, Ireland
:
:
: To be held at
: the 22nd International Conference on
: Software Engineering (ICSE-2000)
:
: Software engineers have derived a progressively better understanding
: of the characteristics of complexity in software. It is now widely
: recognised that *interaction* is probably the most important single
: characteristic of complex software. Software architectures that
: contain many dynamically interacting components, each with their own
: thread of control, and engaging in complex coordination protocols, are
: typically orders of magnitude more complex to correctly and
: efficiently engineer than those that simply compute a function of some
: input through a single thread of control.
:
: Unfortunately, it turns out that many (if not most) real-world
: applications have precisely these characteristics. As a consequence, a
: major research topic in computer science over at least the past two
: decades has been the development of tools and techniques to model,
: understand, and implement systems in which interaction is the norm.
: Indeed, many researchers now believe that in future, computation
: itself will be understood as chiefly as a process of interaction.
:
: Since the 1980s, software agents and multi-agent systems have grown
: into what is now one of the most active areas of research and
: development activity in computing generally. There are many reasons
: for the current intensity of interest, but certainly one of the most
: important is that the concept of an agent as an autonomous system,
: capable of interacting with other agents in order to satisy its design
: objectives, is a natural one for software designers. Just as we can
: understand many systems as being composed of essentially passive
: objects, which have state, and upon which we can perform operations,
: so we can understand many others as being made up of interacting,
: semi-autonomous agents.
:
: This recognition has led to the growth of interest in agents as a new
: paradigm for software engineering. In this workshop for ICSE2000 we
: will seek to examine the credentials of agent-based approaches as a
: software engineering paradigm, and to gain an insight into what
: agent-oriented software engineering will look like.
:
: PUBLICATION OF PROCEEDINGS
:

: Mini Track Description
:
: Many organizations are attempting to improve the quality and reliability of
: their software development products through the application of rigorous and
: disciplined approaches. These approaches, such as the SEI Capability
: Maturity Model (CMM), ISO 9000, and similar models, require the successful
: integration of technical, people and methodology issues. Often software
: process improvement efforts within organizations become a business
: necessity as more and more contracts require proof of software process
: maturity.
:
: Success is often determined by quantitatively measuring quality and
: productivity factors and aligning these results with business objectives to
: show savings in cost and time as well as increases in reliability and
: performance. This mini-track encourages submissions that deal with the
: implementation of process improvement programs that emphasize the
: application of models and standards. In addition, submissions on process
: improvement research issues such as complexity models, process mapping,
: reusable software components, design and coding innovations, etc. are
: encouraged.
:
: Topics for this mini-track include, but are not limited to, the following
: issues relevant to research activities and practical implementation efforts
: in the area of software process improvement:
:
: Application and adaptation of models and standards such as:
: · SEI Capability Maturity Model (CMM)
: · SEI People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM)
: · SEI CMMI (Integrated Capability Maturity Model)
: · Other SEI models such as Systems Engineering, Software Acquisition,
: Trusted Systems, etc.
: · ISO 9001/9003 applied to software development and maintenance
: · International Models such as : TickIT, Bootstrap, Trillium, etc.
: · SPICE (ISO 155504)
: · IEEE standards
: · DoD and Mil Standards
:
: Research and practical application activities involving:
: · Software reuse
: · SPI case studies
: · SPI-related tools
: · SDLC-related tools
: · Software quality assurance
: · Reviews and inspections
: · Software complexity models
: · Design and coding innovations
: · Business alignment for SPI efforts
: · Team and corporate culture issues
:
: We invite papers that address any of the areas listed above, as well as any
: related issues. A range of research methodologies including conceptual,
: lab experiments, surveys, and case studies, among others, would be
: appropriate:
