: Call for Papers/Participation
:
: ECAI-2000 Workshop on
: Local Search for Planning & Scheduling
:
: Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany, August 21, 2000
:
: ************************************************************
:
: With the increasing deployment of planning and scheduling
: systems, developers are often faced with requirements such
: as very large search spaces, real-time performance demands
: and dynamic environments. Complete refinement methods do not
: scale very good, leaving local search methods as the only
: practical alternative. A dynamic environment promotes an
: application of local search as well, because the search
: heuristics are not normally affected by modifications of the
: search space. Furthermore, local search is very appropriate
: for anytime requirements as the optimization goal is
: improved in an iterative way. Such advantages are offset by
: the incompleteness of most local search methods, resulting
: in lack of proof of inconsistency or optimality of the
: solutions generated. Popular local search approaches include
: evolutionary algorithms, simulated annealing, tabu search,
: min-conflicts, GSAT and Walksat.
:
: There exists a significant overlap in the issues addressed
: by solution techniques for planning and scheduling, such as
: reasoning about temporal and resource aspects. The workshop
: will bring together researchers from the planning and
: scheduling communities to explore these issues with respect
: to local search procedures. The workshop may also be of
: interest to a broader audience interested in general issues
: in local search.
:
: Workshop topics will include:
:
: * Neighborhoods for planning & scheduling
: * Search-space analysis
: * Techniques to avoid local minima and plateaus
: * Reasoning about temporal, spatial and other resources
: * Integration of planning & scheduling
: * Comparisons to complete search
: * Combinations of local search and complete search
:
: The workshop will be divided into several tracks, which
: focus on specific aspects of the workshop subject. Every
: track will consist of technical paper presentations with
: affiliated discussion rounds. The tracks will be formed
: according to the distribution of accepted papers. We will
: organize invited talks for some of the tracks.

: USING MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES IN
: EMPIRICAL SOFTWARE ENGINEERING RESEARCH
:
: Monday, June 5, 2000
: http://www.csr.uvic.ca/icse2000/
: Limerick, Ireland
: Announcement and Call for Papers
: Deadline for submissions: February 1, 2000
: Notice of acceptance: March 15, 2000
: Workshop date: June 5, 2000
:
: Overview
: Theories and methods for empirical research have been developed by other disciplines over a long period of time. Therefore, as it makes sense to re-use code, it also makes sense to harness theories and methods from other fields to advance software engineering research. The goal of this workshop is to provide an interactive forum to investigate the feasibility of using multidisciplinary approaches in software engineering research. Interested participants are invited to submit position papers describing problems that would benefit from a multidisciplinary approach (either theory-based or method-based). Then, focusing on the position papers, expert guest speakers from other disciplines will address the issues brought up with the hope of encouraging more multidisciplinary research.
: WORKSHOP FORMAT
: This full-day workshop will provide beginning and experienced researchers in software engineering an opportunity to consult experts from other empirical disciplines. Over the course of the day, there will be 4-6 invited expert speakers who will respond to the position papers. Each speaker will present a 30-45 minute talk, followed by a 30-45 minute discussion. The workshop will conclude with a panel and open discussion to summarize the topics discussed throughout the day.
: Invited speakers will be selected for their expertise in dealing with problems similar to those discussed in the position papers. Possible speakers are:
: * Psychologist
: * Sociologist
: * Anthropologist
: * Architect
: * Design researcher
: * Statistician
: * Medical researcher
: or, in the true nature of multidisciplinary research, the speaker may have experience with more than one of these fields as well as software engineering.
: SUBMISSION
: Interested participants should submit a position paper describing a problem in their current research that could benefit from a multidisciplinary perspective. These problems may relate to any aspect of software engineering, from research design to data analysis, from theory for understanding a phenomenon to difficulty obtaining access to a target population. These papers should be approximately 1500-2500 words (3-5 pages).
: Position papers will be selected by a program committee using the following criteria:
: * relevance to the theme of the
: * educational value for participants
: * potential for lively discussion
: The chairs will use the position papers to guide selection of invited speakers, who will discuss how empirical methods from other disciplines could be applied within a software engineering context.
: The position papers should be 1500-2500 words long (3-5 pages). Detailed
: submission instructions are available on the workshop web site at
: http://www.csr.uvic.ca/icse2000/
: The deadline for submission of position papers is February 1, 2000.
: Authors will be notified of acceptance by March 15, 2000.

: Organizational Change
:
: The topic of change management has been with us since Leavitt first talked
: about the effects of change in the early 60s. Since then theories and models
: have been developed some of which include Lewins three-stage change model,
: the Planned approach to change, the Emergent approach to change and the
: Improvisational Model for change management. Organisations are now operating
: in an environment of continual and rapid change.
:
: In order to remain competitive or gain a strategic advantage organisations are
: having to realign their products or services with the aim of entering new
: markets. Some organisations adopt BPR to restructure while others choose an
: incremental approach to BPR. A strategic vision is created and the
: organisation moves closer to that vision by implementing new systems or
: procedures, all of which create change.
:
: However, in the wealth of literature on change management seldom is guidance
: provided in the practical application of change management theories or
: strategies. Organisations can evaluate the environment in which they operate
: or they can analyze their culture to check for change readiness. The
: literature has provided the means for analysing the various types of change
: they may encounter such as emergent, anticipated, planned and lately
: opportunity-based change. How is this helping organizations in the Year 2000
: to implement change?
:
: This mini track is focused on how organisations are currently coping with
: continual and rapid change. What strategies or practices are they using to
: help with the implementation of change and who in the organisation are they
: recruiting as change agents to reduce resistance to the specific change.
:
: Possible Topics may include the following:
: -Organizational change
: -The implementation of IS/IT related change
: -How organisations are coping with continual change
: -Change agents
: -BPR and change
: -Overcoming resistance to change
: -Strategies for implementing change
: -How organisations are coping with rapid change
: -Change management theories

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: 'Business Models for the Digital Economy'
:
: (cfp is also available at
: http://www.businessmedia.org/businessmedia/businessmedia.nsf/pages/cfp_amci…)
:
: This mini track serves as a forum for the presentation and discussion of new and
: innovative approaches of business models beyond e-commerce for coping with the
: challenges of the digital economy. The mini track is interested especially in
: papers with a clear economic focus.
:
: The development of business supported by information and communication
: technologies (ICT) can be assessed from two different perspectives. Electronic
: commerce, perceived as the utilization of the 'Net' and its services for
: additional communication, marketing, and sales channels, based on only very
: moderately changed business models, indicates an evolutionary path of
: development. However, beside this evolutionary development of electronic
: commerce stands a more revolutionary path of development.
:
: When examining the current appearances of business models, the following
: developments are perceivable: ongoing globalization, e.g., of procurement and
: sales activities; decomposition of products, e.g., in the music or publishing
: industry; emerging new and reconfigured products, e.g., in the music,
: publishing, or financial business; mass customization of services; concentration
: on core competencies; modularization of business; the break-up of traditional
: value chains and emerging value webs; the emergence of new types of
: intermediaries like portal sites or virtual banks; new services, e.g., payment,
: logistics, or trust-services; new technical platforms; the integration of
: customers into the value creation processes; and a shift of power towards
: customers due to an increasing transparency in ubiquitous electronic markets,
: customer and communication focus instead of product focus, and emerging virtual
: (business) communities. All these developments characterize the emerging digital
: economy and pose new challenges
: with which businesses must cope. This will quite clearly have a major impact on
: how business models must be designed in the digital economy. An economy based on
: the digitization of information and the accompanying information and
: communication infrastructure is considered a digital economy. The way in which
: economic values are created will fundamentally change in the digital economy and
: thus transform the general structure of economic systems.
: Therefore this mini track addresses all topics concerned with the analysis,
: design, development, and implementation of future business models for the
: creation of economic values in the digital economy from a communicative,
: organizational, business, economic, and managerial viewpoint.
:
: Possible Topics may include the following:
:
: - Challenges and foundations of the digital economy
: - Economics of future business models
: - Economical theories and the digital economy
: - Value Webs in the digital economy
: - Future business models and their impact on industry structures
: - Business communities and their relevance for future business models
: - The role of customer focus and customer relationships in future business
: models
: - Coordination mechanisms and their impacts on future business models
: - New products and services in the digital economy and their challenges for
: future business models
: - The role of generic market services in the digital economy
: - Communications management in the digital economy
: - Case studies / best practice
: - Design approaches for future business models
: - Models and modeling approaches for future business models.

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: "IT Project Management"
:
: One result from the Y2K crisis is that many organizations have developed a better understanding of the importance of closely managing IT projects with a limited supply of information resources, particularly when faced with an immovable deadline. Now that the Y2K crisis is essentially behind us, there is a plethora of application requests that needs to be tackled, ranging from upgrades of transaction processing systems to developing strategic information systems that will allow companies to be competitive in today's e-business world. Learning from project management successes as well as failures and applying this knowledge to the backlog of IT projects is imperative if IS organizations expect to accomplish their goals of projects completed on-time, within budget, and which meet user specifications. The purpose of this mini-track is to examine the current state of the project management industry, learn from the past, apply successful techniques to today's projects, and educa!
te the project managers of tomorrow.
:
: Possible Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
: - case studies (Y2K and others) of project management success or failure
: - incorporating project management into the systems development process
: - applied project management theory and methodology
: - analysis of project management tools and techniques
: - risk management
: - analysis and design related issues
: - critical success factors for an effective project manager
: - applications of project management to related disciplines
: - curriculum issues related to teaching project management at the undergraduate and graduate levels (e.g., approaches, case scenarios used, etc.)
