: CALL FOR PAPERS
: Special Session on Architectural Support for Aspect-Oriented
: Software Systems at PDPTA 2000
: Las Vegas, June 26-29, 2000
: ***********************************************************************
:
: A session on Architectural Support for Aspect-Oriented Software Systems is
: being organized at the International Conference on Parallel and
: Distributed Techniques and Applications (PDPTA'2000) to be held in Las
: Vegas during June 26-29, 2000.
:
: Background
: ----------
:
: Current languages and paradigms support a number of modular
: representations such as procedures, and objects. They further support
: composition of modules into whole systems. At the same time many systems
: have properties that do not necessarily align with the functional
: components and cannot be localized to modular units. Example properties
: include performance optimizations, failure handling, synchronization,
: coordination and scheduling policies. Aspects are defined as properties
: that cut across groups of functional components. While these aspects can
: be thought about and analyzed relatively separately from the basic
: functionality, at the implementation level they must be combined together.
: Programming them manually into the system's functionality using current
: component-oriented languages results in aspects being spread throughout
: the code. This code tangling makes the source code difficult to develop,
: understand and evolve by destroying modularity and reducing software
: quality.
:
: Aspect-Orientation is a paradigm proposal that addresses the above issues.
: Current proposals on existing techniques such as reflection,
: superimposition, multi-dimensional separation of concerns, use of aspect
: definition languages and automatic weavers are invited.

:
: Outline:
: --------
: The growth of the Internet has dramatically changed the way in which web
: data is managed, accessed and used commercially to conduct business
: electronically. Thus, WWW, a distributed global information resource, is not
: only important to individual users, but to business organizations. Today, a
: large number of companies, organizations, and customers are exploiting the
: opportunities offered by Internet-based electronic commerce solutions and
: many more are expected to follow. Companies have put their databases and
: product catalogues on the Web, search engines allow electronic market
: participants around the globe to locate potential trading partners, and a
: set of different protocols are established to exchange goods and services by
: using different business models and following different strategies. There is
: a diagnostic need for effective tools for information consumers, who must be
: able to easily locate in the web interested information from unstructured
: documents and pictures to structured, record oriented data. The effective
: and efficient access to the web information to support e-commerce activities
: has become a critical research area. This has led to the development of new
: e-commerce tools and technology, web data models and query languages, web
: site management system, auction and negotiation issues etc. The management
: of Web data is receiving a new set of challenges with the advent of XML and
: other standards.
:
: The main objective of this conference is to bring together researchers from
: different disciplines, developers, and users all interested in electronic
: commerce and web technologies and to assess current methodologies and new
: research directions. Although a natural focus will be on computer science
: issues, we expressly welcome technical research contributions from
: economics,
: business, law, and other relevant disciplines. The conference will be

: providing insights into a myriad of decision support applications
: including target marketing, fraud detection, bankruptcy prediction, risk
: management, and customer retention. The techniques range from statistical
: to artificial intelligence methods like neural networks and genetic
: algorithms. Business data poses an interesting problem for pattern
: extraction because of potential anomalies resulting from incompleteness,
: noise, and ambiguity. Hence, the challenge lies in the development of new

: FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: Workshop on
:
: MODELLING ARTIFICIAL SOCIETIES and HYBRID ORGANIZATIONS
: - MASHO -
:
:
: To be held at the
: 14th European Conference on
: Artificial Intelligence (ECAI-2000)
: August 20th-25th, 2000
: Berlin, Germany
: -------------------------------------------------------------------
: Important Dates
:
: Deadline for arrival of submissions: 7 April 2000
: Notification of acceptance: 10 May 2000
: Revised camera-ready due: 12 June 2000
: Workshop in Berlin: 22 August 2000
:
: ------------------------------------------------------------------------
:
: The workshop "Modelling Artificial Societies and Hybrid Organizations"
: is a one-day event that will be held at the occasion of ECAI-2000
: in Berlin, Germany. This workshop aims to present first results in the
: very new field of Socionics. It is concerned with the structure and
: behaviour of hybrid and artificial agent societies. Agent oriented
: approaches are to be used in the modelling of the distributed hybrid
: and artificial organizations as well as in the description of self-
: organization and emergence of social characteristics. The workshop shall
: bring together both researchers in DAI (and related fields) and Sociology.
:
:
: ------------------------------------------------------------------------
: Introduction
:
: In developing agents and multi-agent systems computer scientists have
: used sociological terms like negotiation, interaction, contracts,
: agreement, organization, cohesion, social order, and collaboration.
: Meanwhile an interdisciplinary area called "Socionics" is in the
: beginning to establish itself. In the last years researchers in
: Artificial Intelligence, Sociology, Evolution Theory and Self-Organizing
: Principles have shown interest in answers to questions like:
:
: * What have human and artificial societies in common?
: * How do we deal with the offer of interaction with artificial agents
: and artificial multi-agent communities?
: * What can the DAI community do to get acceptance from "conventional"
: users?
: * What are the main difficulties in designing hybrid societies?
: * What are the effects of growing involvement of artificial societies
: in social life?
: * Where are the "walls" to handle artificial worlds?
: * How can we overcome the existing difficulties in using agent systems?
:
: The workshop will consider organizational models by exploiting agent
: technology for the simulation and evaluation of organizational
: behaviour. Specific aspects of organizational structures,
: for example, the different (sub)groups that can be distinguished within
: an organization, the different roles in a group, and interaction between
: roles, shall be investigated with respect to the involvement of
: artificial partners. An organizational structure provides coordination
: of the different individual actor and agent behaviours. An interesting
: relation is the relation between an organization structure
: specification, the dynamics of individual human and agents behaviour
: (behavioural specification), and the emerging dynamics for the community
: as a whole.
: The workshop aims to exchange ideas on different aspects of agent-
: oriented approaches in connection to organizational knowledge,
: structures and behaviour.
:
: -------------------------------------------------------------------
: Topics
:
: * modelling of artificial and hybrid organizations
: * agent behaviour in organizational structures
: * commitment, responsibility and obligations in artificial and hybrid
: societies
: * semantics of the dynamics of organizational models
: * requirements of agents in artificial and hybrid societies
: * organizational roles
: * adaptive organization models
: * simulation of artificial and hybrid societies
: * self organizing systems and emergent organization
: * applications
: -------------------------------------------------------------------
: Submission Procedure
:
: Those wishing to participate in the workshop should submit an original
: research paper of up to 10 pages maximum to the address below.
: Electronic submission in PostScript (Unix-compatible)is recommended,
: but three single-sided hard copies are also accepted.
: The proceedings will be distributed at the workshop. Based on selected
: workshop papers, we plan to edit a special issue of a well-known AI journal.
: Attendance will be limited to 40 participants. Attendees at the workshop
: must also register for the main ECAI-2000 conference.

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: "Object-Oriented Software Development"
:
: Object-oriented (OO) technology has permeated the field of software
: development. Programming languages, analysis and design techniques, database
: management systems, and CASE tools increasingly reflect the growing
: influence of OO in development. Although OO software development (OOSD) may
: not be the "silver bullet" for eliminating poor quality, over budget and
: late software development projects, many see OOSD as the best solution to
: overcome these software development problems.
:
: The purpose of this mini-track is to provide a forum for research addressing
: object-oriented software development (OOSD). Research including, but not
: limited to, the following topics would be fitting:
:
: * OOSD techniques and methodologies
: * current OOSD practices in industry
: * OO databases
: * OO programming issues
: * adopting OOSD
: * managing the adoption of OOSD
: * training OO developers / migrating developers to OO
:
: All of the above areas contribute to an understanding OOSD. Thus, papers
: addressing any of the areas would be welcome. Various forms of research
: including conceptual, lab experiments, surveys, and case studies, among
: others, would be appropriate.

: Call for Papers for the Mini Track
: Electronic Commerce and Online Auctions
:
: In this mini track we invite research that is interested in examining the
: role of online auction based dynamic pricing in consumer related e-commerce
: markets and also in pure business-to-business markets. Online auctions,
: brought about by the synergetic combination of Internet technology and
: traditional auction mechanisms represent a significant new dimension of
: mercantile processes that are fueling the fire of electronic commerce
: activity around the globe. While there is an immense body of literature that
: analyzes traditional auction design and bidding strategies, the significant
: changes brought about by the Internet on this area are yet to be fully
: studied. Additionally, the simultaneous utilization of alternative pricing
: approaches on the web, such as posted pricing and online auctions, presents
: the research community opportunities to examine their relative efficiency.
: We encourage the analytical, experimental and empirical examination of these
: issues.
:
: Possible Topics may include the following:
: · The impact of IT on traditional auction theory
: · Posted price v. online auctions
: · Consumer bidding strategies in online auctions
: · The impact of online auctions on B2B e-markets, procurement
: · Alternative online auction mechanism design and implementation
: · Complex or combinatorial online auctions for supply chain management
: · The impact of intelligent agents on online auctions
