: CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: Fifth CAiSE/IFIP8.1 International Workshop on
: Evaluation of Modeling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design
: (EMMSAD'00)
:
: Stockholm, Sweden
: June 5-6, 2000
:
: Workshop Theme:
: Methods and Methodologies for Scalable Enterprise Systems Development
:
:
: Workshop Organizers:
:
: Dr. Keng Siau, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA (Chair)
: Dr. Yair Wand, University of British Columbia, Canada
: Dr. Andrew Gemino, Simon Fraser University, Canada
:
: Workshop Background:
:
: Modeling is an essential component of information systems analysis and design
: (SA&D). New paradigms (e.g., OO) and new methods within a paradigm (e.g., UML)
: are constantly being introduced. Some researchers call the field a
: "methodological jungle." In addition, most modeling methods and methodologies
: evolve from experience. A linkage to science is warranted. Scientific
: approaches that are based on theoretical foundation and systematic empirical
: evaluations would clearly benefit the field.
:
: The Workshop on Evaluation of Modeling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design
: (EMMSAD'00) is dedicated to issues related to the development and evaluation of
: modeling methods in SA&D. EMMSAD'00 is 5th in the workshop series that began in
: 1996. EMMSAD workshops have been very successful in bringing together
: researchers and practitioners in information systems, method engineering,
: software engineering, database, and human computer interaction that are
: interested in modeling methods and methodologies in systems analysis and design.
: EMMSAD workshops provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the area
: to meet and exchange research ideas and results.
:
: EMMSAD'00 is an event jointly sponsored by the Conference on Advanced
: Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE) and the International Federation for
: Information Processing Working Group 8.1 (IFIP8.1).
:
: Theme and Topics for Workshop:
:
: The theme for EMMSAD'00 is "Methods and Methodologies for Scalable Enterprise
: Systems Development." Information systems are no longer designed and developed
: to support a single organization. New information systems will span different
: organizations and geographical locations. Business-to-business transactions
: will be the new wave in electronic commerce. To support such functions,
: information systems need to be scalable. A new breed of information modeling
: methods and methodologies needs to be engineered to support these new endeavors.
:
: EMMSAD'00 will provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to share and
: discuss theories, research methodologies, and research findings. We welcome
: submissions on theoretical and/or empirical evaluation of modeling methods and
: methodologies related to:
:
: * Scalable Enterprise Systems
: * Unified Modeling Language (UML)
: * Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
: * Knowledge Management Systems
: * Component-based Software Engineering
: * Electronic Commerce/Business
: * Web-based Information Systems
: * Method Engineering
: * Metamodeling
: * Internet Database
: * Data Warehousing
: * Data Mining
: * Bioinformatics
: * Health Information Systems
: * Geographical Information Systems
:
: We are particularly interested in research papers that directly address the
: theme of this workshop. Evaluation of new software development approaches such
: as UML is strongly encouraged. Research methodologies involving case studies,
: action research, and experience reports are welcome.
:
: Important Dates:
:
: Deadline for papers (received): February 20, 2000
: Notification of paper acceptance: April 1, 2000
: Deadline for camera-ready copies: May 1, 2000
:
: Submission Guidelines:
:
: The workshop accepts two types of submissions - Completed Research and
: Research-In-Progress. Completed research papers should include analysis of data
: and discussion on research findings. Research-in-progress papers report on
: research that is well under way with preliminary results available at the time
: of the conference.
:
: Please use the following format for your submissions:
: * For Completed Research submissions, the paper should not exceed 5,000 words
: (excluding references and appendices). Top papers in this category will be
: recommended for journal publication or for inclusion as book chapters.
: * For Research-In-Progress submissions, the paper should not exceed 2,000 words
: (excluding references and appendices).
: * Include a cover page with title of paper as well as the authors' names,
: affiliations, phones, faxes, and email addresses. The total number of words in
: the paper (excluding cover page, tables, and references) and the submission
: category (i.e., Completed Research or Research-In-Progress) should be indicated
: on the cover page.
: * The second page should begin with the title of the paper followed by an
: abstract of no more than 150 words. The main text will follow the abstract.
: This is to facilitate the blind review process.
: * Use 1.5 or double spacing (except for references), and fonts no smaller than
: 11-point.
:
: Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Email your article as an
: attachment to mis-kengsiau(a)unlnotes.unl.edu. Please send electronic submissions
: in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or PDF format.

: - Interconnection of heterogeneous communities, resource sharing,..
: - How can people socially augment knowledge bandwidth, through
: gathering, discussing, contributing, annotating and rating?
: - What types of agents should be offered and what roles should
: they have (distributed cognition, dynamic adaptation, focus of
: attention, social awareness..)?
: - What features are needed to increase impact of the knowledge networked
:
: environment for social interactions, cooperative communication?
: - What kind of rules, artifacts, conventions and infrastructure must
: be provided to help community members self organize and manage their
: affairs, increase knowledge bandwidth, develop a feeling of social
: awareness?

: "Curriculum Issues in Teaching E-Commerce and the Web"
: A Special Issue of the Journal of Informatics Education & Research
:
: Guest Editor:
: Jonathan Lazar
: Department of Computer and Information Sciences
: Towson University
:
: As the importance of the Internet, the Web, and e-commerce grows, many
: universities are developing courses in these areas. In traditional areas
: of information systems, such as analysis and design, there is a base of
: literature on the curriculum issues involved in developing those
: courses. The areas of e-commerce and the web are new to the information
: systems curriculum, and therefore, there is not a base of literature on
: how to develop these courses. We hope that this special issue of the
: Journal of Informatics Education & Research will build a foundation of
: literature in curriculum issues involving e-commerce and the web. Papers
: can be experimental, theoretical, or present a case study. Some of the
: many topics that would be appropriate for this issue:
:
: 1. Different types of courses offered (web programming, web
: design, web usability, web analysis and design)
:
: 2. Approaches for teaching these courses (real-world projects,
: case studies, research papers, homework assignments)
:
: 3. Teaching software vs. teaching the design process
:
: 4. Case studies from people who have already "done it."
:
: 5. Partnerships with local businesses and community organizations
:
: 6. Effectiveness of lecture/lab/distance education approaches for
: teaching such courses
:
: 7. Meta-analysis of course titles, topics, and textbooks.
:
: Timeline:
: June 1, 2000: Full papers should be submitted to the guest editor
: August 1, 2000: Authors will be notified of acceptance
: September 15, 2000: Camera-ready papers with modifications are due
: November 15, 2000: Special Issue will be published
:
: Instructions:
:
: Contributors are invited to submit manuscripts for publication in
: this special issue of the Journal of Informatics
: Education & Research. All submissions should include a cover
: letter and four (4) copies of the double-spaced
: manuscript. The manuscript should contain:
:
: 1. A cover page with the title of the paper, the authors' names,
: affiliations, addresses, phone and fax numbers,
: and e-mail addresses
: 2. A second page with the title and abstract (100-150 words)
: 3. The manuscript itself
: 4. References in APA format (which must be complete upon
: submission)
: 5. Appendices (if any)
:
: Upon submission, the manuscript will be blind-reviewed by three
: (3) reviewers. Authors should not identify
: themselves in the manuscript. In some cases, contributors will be
: encouraged to revise their manuscripts for a
: second round of reviews. Final publication decisions will be made
: by the guest editor. Manuscripts currently
: under review elsewhere will not be considered for review in the
: Journal of Informatics Education & Research.
:
: Send four copies of each paper to:

:
: CALL FOR PAPERS
:
: ******************************************************************
:
: NMR 2000
:
: Special session on ABDUCTIVE REASONING
:
: ******************************************************************
:
: Over the last two decades several studies have shown how abductive
: reasoning can be used to address a variety of problems. These problems
: include updates in databases, belief revision, planning,
: diagnosis, natural language understanding, default reasoning, user
: modeling and, more generally, problems requiring reasoning with
: incomplete information. Despite this wide range of potential
: applications of abduction, there has been relatively little work
: on showing how abduction can provide an effective computational model
: for practical problems. The field lacks coherent methodological
: guidelines and general-purpose, working systems, that could be
: employed for this variety of problems, and real-life applications.
:
: For this reason, NMR 2000, the 8th workshop in the NMR series,
: includes a special one-day session devoted to abductive reasoning. Its
: main purpose would be to evaluate the role of abduction in
: applications and to try to address the question of what general
: methodologies or "engineering/programming/modeling" principles are
: appropriate for the development of abductive applications.
:
: We are seeking papers on the theory and practice of abductive reasoning.
: Emphasis will be given on recent and novel applications and systems
: of abduction which could help establish its role within AI and
: more generally its role as a computational problem solving paradigm.
: Of particular interest for the session are the following topics:
:
: o role of abduction in Artificial Intelligence,
:
: o proof procedures and systems for abduction,
:
: o methodologies for applications of abduction,
:
: o novel applications of abduction,
:
: The general procedure for submission of the special session is
: identical to the procedure of NMR2000. Informal proceedings containing
: accepted papers and other workshop materials will be distributed at
: the meeting. In addition, they will be published on the web. Format
: requirements for regular submissions are:
:
: 12 double-spaced pages excluding title page and bibliography
: on-line submissions are encouraged (postscript file)
:
: Important dates:
:
: Submission of papers: January 15, 2000
: Acceptance decision by: February 15, 2000
: Camera ready copy due: March 8, 2000
:
: Electronic copies of the papers can be submitted to the organisers of
: the session:

: CALL FOR PAPERS
: Special Session on Architectural Support for Aspect-Oriented
: Software Systems at PDPTA 2000
: Las Vegas, June 26-29, 2000
: ***********************************************************************
:
: A session on Architectural Support for Aspect-Oriented Software Systems is
: being organized at the International Conference on Parallel and
: Distributed Techniques and Applications (PDPTA'2000) to be held in Las
: Vegas during June 26-29, 2000.
:
: Background
: ----------
:
: Current languages and paradigms support a number of modular
: representations such as procedures, and objects. They further support
: composition of modules into whole systems. At the same time many systems
: have properties that do not necessarily align with the functional
: components and cannot be localized to modular units. Example properties
: include performance optimizations, failure handling, synchronization,
: coordination and scheduling policies. Aspects are defined as properties
: that cut across groups of functional components. While these aspects can
: be thought about and analyzed relatively separately from the basic
: functionality, at the implementation level they must be combined together.
: Programming them manually into the system's functionality using current
: component-oriented languages results in aspects being spread throughout
: the code. This code tangling makes the source code difficult to develop,
: understand and evolve by destroying modularity and reducing software
: quality.
:
: Aspect-Orientation is a paradigm proposal that addresses the above issues.
: Current proposals on existing techniques such as reflection,
: superimposition, multi-dimensional separation of concerns, use of aspect
: definition languages and automatic weavers are invited.
