Subject: [AISWorld] FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS - ECIS 2020 Track "Design
Research in Information Systems"
Date: Tue, 12 Nov 2019 15:56:37 +0000
From: Morana, Stefan (IISM) <stefan.morana(a)kit.edu>

28th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2020)
June 15th - 17th 2020 / Marrakech, Morocco (http://ecis2020.eu/)
Track "Design Research in Information Systems"
##########################################################################
## Track Description ##
Interacting with information technology (IT) has become a pervasive element
in private and business life. With the advanced development of IT in a
digitizing world, humans constantly adjust to the latest technological
circumstances and adapt their routines and habits accordingly. Similarly,
system designers need to build on a profound theoretical and methodological
knowledge base for the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel
artefacts in a highly competitive and dynamic market environment. The
interdisciplinary area of design research in Information Systems is
concerned with informing the design of IT artefacts by establishing and
applying comprehensive (design) theories, exploring and testing models with
rigorous research, providing validated evaluation methods and design
guidelines, as well as designing and evaluating IT artefacts.
In information systems, scholars can follow different approaches when
engaging in design-oriented research. Firstly, researchers can engage in
artefact creation following design science research (DSR). Here, the focus
is to identify and understand an important real-world problem and provide a
solution for it by building and evaluating artefacts. Researchers thereby
can contribute with theory-grounded and artefact-centric design knowledge to
the scientific knowledge base. Secondly, researchers can engage in
understanding and investigating specific design elements of an information
system by conducting empirical research, both qualitatively and
quantitatively (e.g., interviews, laboratory experiments, surveys). By doing
so, researchers can also contribute valuable design knowledge.
The aim of this track is to stimulate research that extends the scientific
knowledge base for design research in information systems in general and for
a digitizing world in particular. We thereby seek research that produces
novel design knowledge about IT artefacts for addressing real-world problems
(e.g., data-driven design, digital assistants, socially influencing
systems), methodological contributions for the design of such systems (e.g.,
cross-disciplinary research, participatory-design, user experience
engineering), as well as research addressing the implications of specific
design elements of information systems (e.g. flow, privacy). We welcome a
diversity of submissions focusing on designing, developing, and evaluating
IT artefacts, adding to the theoretical and methodological knowledge base
about design research in information systems and the role of design research
in problem domains, and exploring tool support for design science research.
## Suggested Topics ##
- Action design research
- Behavior design, gamification, and persuasive systems
- Conversational interfaces, chatbots, and digital assistants
- Data-driven design of information systems
- Designing human behavior
- Design processes, principles of design, and modularity in design in
information systems
- Design science and cross-disciplinary research
- Designing tools, emerging methods and tools for design science research
- Ethics in design science research

*Overview of Special Issue*
Information Systems Development (ISD) has been part of the intellectual
core of information systems for over 40 years (Obrand et al., 2018;
Sidorova et al., 2008). Its chequered history of successes and failures
has, however, been an ongoing concern of the IS research community
(Dwivedi et al., 2015; Hassan & Mathiassen, 2017). Despite efforts to
improve the management of ISD projects, these efforts have not had the
desired effect (Lim et al., 2011).
There is anecdotal evidence that business analytics can help project
managers to (i) understand the dynamics and collective state of complex
projects, (ii) detect and forecast trends, (iii) improve the
effectiveness of risk models, (iv) evaluate the effectiveness of a
change to the development process, and (v) distinguish questions of
‘information’ from questions of ‘insight’ (Davenport et al., 2010).
Business analytics are frequently referred to as ‘the techniques,
technologies, systems, practices, methodologies, and applications that
analyse critical business data to help an enterprise better understand
its business and market and make timely decisions’ (Chen et al., 2012,
p.1166). Yet, much of the research conducted to date has focused on the
technologies of business analytics and not enough on the people and
their organisational context in which such technologies are intended to
be used (Abbasi et al, 2017; Conboy et al., 2018; Mikalef et al., 2019).
This is a significant limitation given that the ISD environment is a
highly metric oriented, complex, and socially embedded activity that is
continuously changing (Conboy, 2009; Kudaravalli et al., 2017; Windeler
et al., 2017).
This special issue seeks to collect contemporary research on the latest
developments and challenges of how organisations exploit business
analytics to support project/portfolio managers, project teams, and
other project stakeholders.
*Indicative List of Anticipated Themes*
This special issue seeks a wide range of articles that draw on diverse
project settings, theories, and approaches to understand the different
aspects of business analytics as applied to the context of ISD. The
following questions are of interest for the special issue:
• How can business analytics be used to better understand and manage ISD
projects?
• What value does business analytics provide to ISD management and
development teams?
• What tensions arise from the integration of business analytics with
traditional and agile methods and practices?
• What are the emerging best practices that enable business analytics to
be embedded within the ISD process and the wider organisation?
• Does the deployment of business analytics make existing agile methods
and practices less valuable or even obsolete?
• What new metrics and standards can business analytics provide to
manage and control ISD projects more effectively?
• How can business analytics enable organisational learning and
innovation in the context of ISD?
• How are business analytics being applied in various types
(distributed, large scale) of ISD projects?
• How can business analytics support the scaling of ISD projects?
• What are the change management and organisational cultural issues that
need to be considered when developing analytical capabilities?
• How can business analytics provide new ways of working in ISD projects?
• What ethical issues stem from the use of business analytics in ISD
projects?
• How can business analytics be used to support more effective decision
making?
• What are the new theories and theoretical developments to explain the
implementation and use of business analytics in ISD projects?
These questions are not intended to be exhaustive. Rather they are
intended to stimulate thinking about the role of business analytics in
the management of ISD projects across various levels of analysis - from
participants in individual projects through projects, programs,
portfolios, organisations, and the wider society. We welcome submissions
that address questions pertaining to all aspects of the intersection of
business analytics and ISD project management.

academia, industry, and government to discuss research results and
advancements, emerging challenges, and future trends in computer and
software technologies and applications. The theme of COMPSAC 2020 is
“Driving Intelligent Transformation of the Digital World”.
Staying relevant in a constantly evolving digital landscape is a
challenge faced by researchers, developers, and producers in virtually
every industry and area of study. Once limited to software-enabled
devices, the ubiquity of digitally-enabled systems makes this challenge
a universal issue. Furthermore, as relevance fuels change, many
influencers will offer solutions that benefit their own priorities.
Fortunately, history has shown that the building blocks of digital
change are forged by those conducting foundational research and
development of digital systems and human interactions. Artificial
Intelligence is not new, but is much more utilized in everyday computing
now that data and processing resources are more economically viable,
hence widely available. The opportunity to drive the use of this
powerful tool in transforming the digital world is yours. Will your
results help define the path ahead, or will you relegate those decisions
to those with different priorities for utilizing intelligence in digital
systems? COMPSAC has been and continues to be a highly respected venue
for the dissemination of key research on computer and software systems
and applications, and has influenced fundamental developments in these
fields for over 40 years. COMPSAC 2020 is your opportunity to add your

Call for Contributions
3rd U.S. Semantic Technologies Symposium 2020, 9 – 11 March 2020,
Raleigh, North Carolina. https://us2ts.org/ <https://us2ts.org/>
=====================================
The US2TS Symposium series is an emerging premier forum for fostering
community between academic, industry and government researchers and
practitioners in the US that develop or apply semantic technologies. The
interest in semantics has been strengthened by the growing dependence on
the Web and the continuously increasing importance of large-scale data
sharing, integration, and reuse.
Semantics is an inherently multi-disciplinary field that attracts
engagement from a broad range of researchers and practitioners.
Participants at the US2TS come from disciplines in computer science and
engineering, natural sciences, geoscience, biology, library science,
biomedical and health care sciences, social sciences and the humanities,
and many others. Discussions at the symposium cover core topics such as
the Semantic Web, Ontologies, Knowledge Graph, Linked Data and AI on the
Web, Privacy and Trust, etc., as well as the intersection of such topics
with areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Blockchains.
US2TS 2020 organizational committee invites your contributions and
participation in the 2020 edition of US2TS to be held on 9 – 11 March
2020, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
At this time, we are seeking two kinds of contributions (calls for other
kinds of contributions will follow shortly).
=====================================
** Call for Sessions Proposals
=====================================
We solicit anyone with an interest in the Semantic Web to propose a
session for US2TS 2020. A session is any relevant activity that can
fit into a 90 minutes slot (you can also propose a session that takes
more than one slot).
Examples of sessions are:
- a panel discussion
- a series of presentations on a topic
- breakout-style discussions on a proposed topic
- a tutorial
As the main goal of the Symposium is to foster synergies and
collaborations from different fields, we recommend that:
1. At least 2-3 people, preferably from different institutions, propose
the session. This is not a strict requirement, mostly a recommendation
(if you have a good case for a different setting we will definitely take
your proposal into account).
2. All the session leaders are asked to confirm and commit to
participate at the time of submission.
3. If your proposal already names speakers or panelists, you must state
whether their participation is already confirmed.
We encourage session proposals about cross-discipline topics which are
of concern for participants from existing sub-communities
** Submission Guidelines
--------------------------------------------------------------
Please prepare a (max) 2 page submission indicating:
- Name of the session
