CALL FOR PAPERS
3RD WORKSHOP ON THE ROLE OF REAL-WORLD OBJECTS IN BUSINESS PROCESS
MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (RW-BPMS 2017)
To be held in conjunction with EDOC 2017
10th of October 2017, Québec City, Canada
**** Extended submission deadline: 21 May 2017 ****
https://ai.wu.ac.at/rw-bpms2017/
SCOPE
The increased availability of sensors disseminated in the world has led
to the possibility to monitor in detail the evolution of several
real-world objects of interest. GPS receivers, RFID chips, transponders,
detectors, cameras, satellites, etc. concur in the depiction of the
current status of monitored things. Therefore, the opportunity arose to
connect physical reality to digital information. The screening of
real-world objects lets sensors be the interface towards real-world
information, as they are the originators of machine-readable events. The
exploitation of such knowledge is leading to successful applications
such as Smart Cities, Flight Monitoring, Pollution Control, Internet of
Things, and Dynamic Manufacturing Networks.
The amount of information at hand could be leveraged for a fine-grained
monitoring, mining, and decision support for business processes,
stemming from the joint observation of business-related objects in the
real world. However, the main focus of process and data analysis in
Business Process Management (BPM) still lies at a high level of
abstraction, such as activities' status, and is based on
digital-to-digital information, such as information systems' data- and
activity-centric logs. Furthermore, a limited investigation from the BPM
community has been evinced towards the physical-to-digital bridge so
far. Such a bridge would be naturally provided by rethought information
systems, where the knowledge extracted from real-world objects would
best depict the contingencies and the context in which business
processes are carried out. At the same time, awareness of physical
reality for undertaken actions would allow for a better control over the
interaction that the Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) have
with the real world.
The objective of the RW-BPMS workshop is therefore to attract novel
research and industry approaches investigating the connection of
business processes with real-world objects monitoring. Conceptual,
technical and application-oriented contributions are pursued within the
scope of this theme.

CONFERENCE SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
With the fast development of the Internet, we are experiencing a shift from the traditional sharing of information and applications as the main purpose of the Web to
an emergent paradigm, which locates people at the very center of networks and exploits the value of people's connections and relations. Web 2.0 has come to play a
major role in this context by enabling a new generation of social networks and web-based communities and dramatically changing the way we use and interact with the
Web. Social network analysis is also a rapidly growing field to investigate the dynamics and structure of intelligent Web-based networking and collaborative systems.
Virtual campuses and organizations strongly leverage intelligent networking and collaborative systems by a great variety of formal and informal electronic relations,
such as business-to-business, peer-to-peer and many types of online collaborative learning interactions. This has resulted in entangled systems that need to be managed
efficiently and in an autonomous way. In addition, latest and powerful technologies based on Grid and Wireless infrastructure as well as Cloud computing are currently
enhancing collaborative and networking applications a great deal but also facing new issues and challenges. Well-known social networks lack of knowledge management and
adaptive solutions and the information shared among peers is rather static. Virtual communities of practice also provide poorly interactive solutions and lack of full
support for organization, management, mobility and security.
This conference covers the latest advances in intelligent social networks and collaborative systems that lead to gain competitive advantages in business and academia
scenarios. The ultimate aim is to stimulate research that will lead to the creation of responsive environments for networking and, at longer-term, the development of
adaptive, secure, mobile, and intuitive intelligent systems for collaborative work and learning. Industry and academic researchers, professionals and practitioners are
invited to exchange their experiences and present their ideas in this field.
Papers are solicited for in the following areas (not limited to) ? Social networking and collaborative systems ? Virtual campuses and collaborative systems ? Virtual

ManComp 2017
2nd Workshop on Managed Complexity
https://wwwswt.informatik.uni-rostock.de/ManComp2017/
August 28, 2017 · Copenhagen, Denmark
In conjunction with BIR 2017 conference http://www.bir2017.aau.dk/
Managing complexity has a long tradition for algorithms and general problems. However, it is an important issue also in Business Informatics domain. Here the complexity of different systems and systems of systems has to be managed. While complexity usually associates with large or very large scale systems still managing complexity is important even for systems with small sizes operating in complex environments. Nowadays informatics requires handling complexity at different levels and configurations of social, physical, enterprise, software, and hardware systems. The workshop is planned to focus on approaches and methods for managing complexity in the domain of applied informatics that may address an interplay of systems and ecosystems of various sizes and substances. Its purpose is to share and transfer knowledge on complexity identification, representation, controlling and reduction as well as to exploit possible synergies in development of innovative complexity handling strategies, approaches, and methods.
The ultimate goal of the workshop is bringing together researchers and practitioners to discuss theoretical approaches and real-life case studies featuring success and/or failure stories in managing complexity. It welcomes seeking and discussing answers to such complexity management questions as:
* How is complexity divided?
* What kinds of models are to be specified?
* What is the role of system architecture in complexity handling?
* How is the human recognized in the loop?
* What kind of rules are to be applied?
* In which way do patterns help?
* Which notation or ontologies are useful in complexity handling?
* How is knowledge reused?
* How is knowledge propagated?
* and many others.
Based on these discussions, we expect to deepen the understanding of strategies, approaches, and methods in managing complexity in enterprise, software, and hardware engineering. A cross-pollination of experiences in those domains is assumed.
Three types of submissions are welcomed: position papers, research papers, and reports. All types should treat a topic complying to the workshop themes.
* Position papers (2-6 pages): Such papers should state the position of the authors regarding any topic of the workshop.
* Reports (4-8 pages) Experience reports and case studies are expected to be submitted in this category.
* Research papers (8-15 pages full research papers, 8-10 pages research in progress papers): Research papers should describe innovative approaches.
Publication
Workshop papers should be formatted following the Springer's LNCS or LNBIP formatting guidelines (see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Workshop papers will be published either in CEUR proceedings of BIR Workshops or in the journal Complex Systems Informatics and Modeling (CSIMQ). In case of CEUR proceedings, the extended versions of the papers will be considered for publication in CSIMQ<http://csimq.mozello.lv/> http://csimq.mozello.lv/. Papers should be submitted to the EasyChair conference management system https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mancomp2017.

The 10th Workshop on Social and Human Aspects of Business Process Management
(BPMS2’17)
September 10-11, 2017 Barcelona, Spain
Call for Papers
Deadline for workshop paper submissions: May 26, 2017
Workshop Theme
Social software is a new paradigm that is spreading quickly in society,
organizations and economics. It enables social business that has created a
multitude of success stories. More and more enterprises use social software to
improve their business processes and create new business models. Social
software is used both in internal and external business processes. Using
social software, the communication with the customer is increasingly bi-
directional. E.g. companies integrate customers into product development to
capture ideas for new products and features. Social software also creates new
possibilities to enhance internal business processes by improving the exchange
of knowledge and information, to speed up decisions, etc.
Social software is based on four principles: weak ties, social production,
egalitarianism and mutual service provisioning.
· Weak ties
Weak-ties are spontaneously established contacts between individuals that
create new views and allow combining competencies. Social software supports
the creation of weak ties by supporting to create contacts in impulse between
non-predetermined individuals.
· Social Production
Social Production is the creation of artefacts, by combining the input from
independent contributors without predetermining the way to do this. By this
means it is possible to integrate new and innovative contributions not
identified or planned in advance. Reputation based mechanisms assure quality
following an a-posteriori approach.
· Egalitarianism
Egalitarianism is the attitude of handling individuals equally. Social
software highly relies on egalitarianism and therefore strives for giving all
participants the same rights to contribute. This is done with the intention to
encourage a maximum of contributors and to get the best solution fusioning a
high number of contributions, thus enabling the wisdom of the crowds . Social
software realizes egalitarianism by abolishing hierarchical structures,
merging the roles of contributors and consumers and introducing a culture of
trust.
· Mutual Service Provisioning
Social software abolishes the separation of the service provider and consumer
by introducing the idea, that service provisioning is a mutual process of
service exchange. Thus both service provider and consumer (or better prosumer)
provide services to one another in order co-create value . This mutual service
provisioning contrasts to the idea of industrial service provisioning, where
services are produced in separation from the customer to achieve scaling
effects.
Up to now, the interaction of social software and its underlying paradigms
with business processes have not been investigated in depth. Therefore, the
objective of the workshop is to explore how social software interacts with
business process management, how business process management has to change to
comply with weak ties, social production, egalitarianism and mutual service,
and how business processes may profit from these principles.
The workshop will discuss three topics. Social Business Process Management,
Social Business and Big Data in Social Business. Social Business Process
Management is the use of social software to support one or multiple phases of
the business process life cycle.
1. Social Business Process Management (SBPM)
- Which phases of the BPM lifecycle (Design, Deployment, Operation, and
Evaluation) can profit the most by social software?
- Do we need new BPM methods and/or paradigms to cope with social
software?
- Is there an influence of weak ties, social production, egalitarianism
and mutual service provisioning on BPM methods themselves?
- How are trust and reputation established in business processes using
social software?
- How do weak ties, social production, egalitarianism and mutual service
provisioning influence the design of business processes?
- How does social software interact with WFMS or other business process
support systems?
- What is the impact on conceptual models for those categories of
business processes which are not well-defined?
2. Social Business: Social software supporting business processes
- Which new possibilities for the support of business processes are
created by social software?
- Are there business processes which require sociality, especially when
they are not predictable (as production workflows) but collaborative or ad
hoc?
- How can we use Wikis, Blogs etc. to support business processes?
- Which types of social software can be used in which phases of the BPM
lifecycle?
- What new kinds of business knowledge representation are offered by
social production?
3. Human Aspects of Business Process Management
- What requirements are created for individuals by participating in a
multitude of business processes.
- Which concepts and technologies exist to support the individual in
coping with different external business processes
- Which further human aspects of business process management exist ?
- Human-centric business processes
- Human resource management in business processes
Goal
Based on the nine previous successful BPMS2’08 to BPMS2’16 workshops, the goal
of the BPMS2’17 workshop is to promote the integration of business process
management with social software and to enlarge the community pursuing the
theme.
Workshop paper format
Position papers of up to 2500 words are sought. Position papers that raise
relevant questions, or describe successful or unsuccessful practice, or
describe experience will all be welcome. Position papers will be assigned a
20-minute presentation. Short papers of up to 1000 words can also be
submitted, and will be assigned a 10-minute presentation.
Submission
Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for presentation in any of
the areas listed above. Only papers in English will be accepted. The length of
full papers must not exceed 12 pages (There is no possibility to buy
additional pages). Position papers and tool reports should be no longer than 6
pages. Papers should be submitted in the new LNBIP format
(http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-487211-0). Papers have to
present original research contributions not concurrently submitted elsewhere.

information technologies (e.g., IoT, artificial intelligence, augmented
reality, virtual reality, big data, cloud computing, and FinTech), which
bring disruptive changes to business activities and individual lives.
Specifically, this special issue addresses the following questions:
1. Do the existing theories of technology adoption and/or diffusion explain
the role of emerging disruptive technologies well? If not, how to extend
the existing theories or develop new theoretical perspectives to fill the
gap?
2. What additional perspectives should be considered besides the
traditional adoption theories?
3. What are the adoption and/or diffusion barriers of disruptive
information technologies?
4. What are the risks of the disruptive information technologies?
5. How do the risks of the disruptive information technologies affect their
adoption and/or diffusion processes?
6. Why are organizations and individuals reluctant to adopt and diffuse the
disruptive information technologies?
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
* New theory and perspective for the adoption and diffusion of disruptive
information technologies
* State of the art and new business models using disruptive information
technologies

Authors are instructed to follow the Guide for Authors
<http://emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?i…>
and
submission guidelines for the journal at the journal’s website, and to
choose "Special Issue: Disruptive IT" as the paper type in the online
submission system, Scholar One <http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/imds>.
More about the Special Issue
With technology use permeating every part of our life, both personal and at
work, the issues related to its adoption have drawn concerns of all users.
Technology acceptance studies have provided valuable insight and been
consistently published in various outlets (Lee et al. 2013). The topic has
also garnered high citation as evidenced the previous papers. As new
technologies are being introduced, we expect that the adoption and
resistance issues will continue to attract user interest. Although existing
technology acceptance theories are old-fashioned, many researchers still
apply the theories to specific contexts (e.g., developing country,
education, and health care areas). However, these theories may have
limitations in explaining the adoption of emerging disruptive information
technologies (Sun, Y., & Jeyaraj, A. 2013). Thus, if we fill this research
gap, many researchers will have better opportunities to develop the related
topics based on studies included in this special issue.

Conference Description:
Society appears to be becoming more complex. We need to address the challenges from rising complexity through the knowledge and intelligence available in technological and social systems. From a technical perspective there is the search for more efficient computing algorithms using computational intelligence along with nano-scale technologies and sensors that could simplify human, business and industrial operations by taking over human cognitive functions. We find the application of smart systems in a wide range of topics such as the support for the elderly and disabled, medical applications, smart city technologies (e.g. transportation, energy management, and industrial automation), and different business systems (e.g. e-payment). Since these technologies are mostly to assist humans, the human side of the system cannot be ignored. Nor can we ignore business and organisational aspects since the systems affect business and organisations either as recipients or as financiers. There is
great opportunity for research in areas such as systems analysis, information management (which includes big data from which intuitive insights can be drawn), knowledge management and human-computer interface. This joint-conference, therefore, expects contributions about current research and work in progress in both the technical and non-technical aspects geared at addressing complex human, business, industrial and organisational problems. CONTENTS OF VOLUME 19, NUMBER 4 (Oct-Dec, 2016) OF THE JOURNAL OF GLOBAL
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT (JGITM)
EDITORIAL PREFACE: BIG DATA ANALYTICS: A FIELD OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR
INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY RESEARCHERS
Jaideep Ghosh, Shiv Nadar University, India, jaideep.ghosh(a)snu.edu.in
In recent years, the information systems (IS) research community has been
experiencing an exciting time discovering and coming to grips with many
unexplored or untapped opportunities for research that lie at the
intersection of the disciplines of information systems and technology, big
data, analytics, and data science. In this article, we discuss the some of
the critical aspects of the big-data problem and show their importance as
well as relevance to IS research. We also propose a number of research
problems in this area that interested IS scholars can address to delve more
deeply into the field as well as to generate further active interest of the
subject within the IS community.
INFORMATION SYSTEMS OUTSOURCING REASONS AND RISKS: REVIEW AND EVOLUTION
Reyes González (mr.gonzalez(a)ua.es), Jose Gascó & Juan Llopis
The present article proposes a set of outsourcing reasons and
risks—subsequently assessing them in the case of major Spanish companies
through a survey that has been replicated twice. A questionnaire was
administered to the Information Systems managers of the largest Spanish
firms in order to achieve these aims. An analysis was carried out to check
if the proposed reasons and risks are valid for firms regardless of their
size or their degree of outsourcing, later complemented with a study of the
effect that time has on them, showing a 12-year evolution.
IDIOCENTRISM VERSUS ALLOCENTRISM AND ETHICAL EVALUATIONS ON ILLEGAL
DOWNLOADING INTENTION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND SOUTH KOREA
Namkee Park, Hyun Sook Oh & Naewon Kang (nkang(a)dankook.ac.kr)
This study examined the effects of the personality dimension of
idiocentrism and allocentrism, individual experiences, and ethical
evaluations on illegal downloading intention. Using data from surveys of
college students in the United States and South Korea, the study uncovered
that South Korean students are more likely to download illegal content than
the U.S. counterpart. The study found the personal trait of self-reliance
affected illegal downloading intention for the U.S. students, as expected,
while that of interdependence affected the intention for South Korean
students. Of more interest is that self-reliance, which is likely to be
prominent in individualistic societies, played an important role in
explaining illegal downloading intention among the students of South Korea
where collectivistic culture has traditionally been predominant. Further,
the role of individual experience and ethical evaluations played
differently in accounting for illegal downloading intention among the U.S.
and South Korean students.
AWARENESS AND ATTITUDES OF SMALL-SCALE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS
OPERATORS IN LAGOS, NIGERIA TOWARD E-WASTE HAZARDS
Williams Nwagwu (nwagwwe(a)unisa.ac.za) & Margaret Okuneye
Electronic waste, consisting of fairly used and unusable electronic and
electrical equipment, is the fastest growing solid waste in the world, and
it contains substances that are toxic to human health and environment.
Businesses anchored on e-waste thrive in Lagos, Nigeria, and many studies
have examined the hazards caused by e-waste, but none of the studies
examined the awareness and attitudes of the e-waste dealers toward the
health hazards of the waste they generate. The aim of this study is to
examine the awareness and attitudes of e-waste dealers in Lagos, Nigeria
toward the health hazards of e-waste, understand the factors influencing
their behavior, and the likelihood that they will embrace adequate e-waste
management practices as well as how these variables are related to their
socio-demographic characteristics. The study is guided by the Theory of
Reason Action. Data analysis was guided by binary logistic regression. The
e-waste dealers are aware about the health hazards of their goods and are
willing to adopt adequate behavior toward managing them. However, they
would be willing to co-operate with the Lagos State government in this
regard more than they would with their trade association or federal
government agencies. The negative attitude of the e-waste dealers toward
e-waste, despite their high level of awareness about e-waste hazard, is a
very significant observation. The Lagos State government should lead mass
awareness programs encompassing all the stakeholders of e-waste.

BOOK REVIEW: NEW TRENDS IN INTELLIGENT INFORMATION AND DATABASE SYSTEMS
(2015)
Reviewed by: Robert Vinaja, Texas A&M University San Antonio, Texas, USA,
bvinaja(a)tamusa.tamus.edu
Dariusz Barbucha, Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, John Batubara
An ambitious objective for researchers has been to create computers that
can mimic or replicate human intelligence. Researchers have achieved only
partial success in reaching this goal. This book contains 38 chapters based
on papers presented at the Seventh Asian Conference on Intelligent
Information and Database Systems taking place in Bali, Indonesia. It is
organized into five sections. The book provides a solid collection of
innovative research. This book will be very appealing to researchers and
practitioners interested in applications of newer databases and artificial
intelligence to enhance information systems.
