GPS receivers, RFID chips, transponders, detectors, cameras, satellites, etc. concur in the depiction of the current status of monitored things. Therefore, the opportunity arose to connect physical reality to digital information. The screening of real-world objects lets sensors be the interface towards real-world information, as they are the originators of machine-readable events. The exploitation of such knowledge is leading to successful applications such as Smart Cities, Flight Monitoring, Pollution Control, Internet of Things, and Dynamic Manufacturing Networks. The amount of information at hand could be leveraged for a fine-grained monitoring, mining, and decision support for business processes, stemming from the joint observation of business-related objects in the real world. However, the main focus of process and data analysis in Business Process Management (BPM) still lies at a high level of abstraction, such as activities' status, and is based on digital-to-digital information, such as information systems' data- and activity-centric logs. Furthermore, a limited investigation from the BPM community has been evinced towards the physical-to-digital bridge so far. Such a bridge would be naturally provided by rethought information systems, where the knowledge extracted from real-world objects would best depict the contingencies and the context in which business processes are carried out. At the same time, awareness of physical reality for undertaken actions would allow for a better control over the interaction that the Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) have with the real world. The objective of the RW-BPMS workshop is therefore to attract novel research and industry approaches investigating the connection of business processes with real-world objects monitoring. Conceptual, technical and application-oriented contributions are pursued within the scope of this theme. Advances in the effective integration of networked sensors, building controls, and physical infrastructure are transforming our society, allowing the formation of unprecedented built environments and interlocking physical, social, cyber challenges. Built environments, including buildings and critical urban infrastructure, account for over half of society’s energy consumption and are the mainstay of our nation’s economy, security and health. As a result, there is a broad recognition that systems optimizing explicitly for the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g., by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging “smart cities”. The 4th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2017) will be held November 8-9, 2017 at Delft, The Netherlands. We invite original contributions in the areas of intelligent systems and applications for the built environment. BuildSys particularly emphasizes approaches that improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, increase performance, and add novel functionality for improving users’ comfort and experience. BuildSys’ scope is broad, encompassing all systems within the built environment of the urban fabric, including not only buildings but also critical infrastructure systems, such as water, power, lighting, communications, and transportation that will make up the “smart cities” of the future. Submission Types: We solicit three types of original submissions: * Regular papers for oral presentation (10 pages) * Notes papers for oral presentation (4 pages) * Technical posters and demos will be solicited via a separate call (2 pages) Topics: Papers are invited in all emerging aspects of information-driven systems for the built environment. They create a new blueprint for competition as they not only facilitate formation of new products and services but also shape business models, impact strategies, and transform entire industries. A platform is a foundation on which third parties can build complementary product or service. Hence, for meeting the requirements of heterogeneous users and exploit network effects, platform owners encourage complementary innovation from the outside resources such as customers, research companies, business partners and universities. Such approach of complementary innovation has given rise to the platform ecosystem model. Platform ecosystems are comprised of externally produced complements that augment the platform capabilities. Ecosystem leaders usually do not possess formal authority over application developers, but work with them in a loose manner. Platform-based technologies such as personal computers, video game consoles, and mobile computing systems are vital in the information economy. The crucial challenge for platform providers is to constantly sustain and foster an innovative ecosystem around their platform. Moreover, contemporary literature lacks the case studies providing fruitful insights into the phenomenon of platform ecosystem. The aim of this special issue is to publish cutting-edge research to enhance the understanding of the challenges, opportunities, strategies, and architecture of the platform ecosystem. Example of Topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to: • Platform businesses versus product/service businesses • Developing platform strategy • Aligning platform architectures and strategy • Evolving a platform ecosystem • Platform ecosystem governance • Designing and orchestrating software platform ecosystems • Creating and managing apps for software platforms • Mobile platform ecosystem • Case studies on digital aggregators • Case studies on contemporary platform ecosystems (Mobile computing, Browser, social networks, publishing, video games, search engines etc.) This special issue also welcomes Teaching Case articles describing certain contemporary methods of teaching IT cases that engage students in realistic business scenarios. For example, a new teaching case could explore the complex issues involving the transition of technology platforms, organization and management of new technologies, and importance of stakeholder commitments in new technology acceptance. Such Teaching Case articles must be accompanied by a Research Note and a Teaching Note. Submission Format and Guidelines The research must present one or more well described cases and/or applications befitting the mission of Journal of IT Case and Application Research (JITCAR). The case research can be by itself or in conjunction with an empirical or experimental research. It is important to note that the submitted papers not only demonstrate issues related to platform ecosystem, but also advance our current understanding of implications of platform ecosystem on organizational performance through adoption of innovative technology and systems. Specifically, we are interested in studies that use data analytics approaches as objective measures to understand human behavior with information systems. Traditional behavioral studies have mainly relied on survey-based approach to capture behavioral intent of accepting or using the new system. With advances in monitoring system use and data analytics, newer approaches that track and analyze user actual behavior with system can provide a much better indicator of systems acceptance and use. This mini-track seeks new work from researchers to foster a growing body of exploratory, theoretical, experimental and field research that could advance the use of data analytics approaches for understanding IT adoption, acceptance or system usage. We seek papers that address individual or firm level adoption that advance both theoretical practice and provide practical contributions to this field. Advance analytical approaches including machine learning that analyze user behavior from data log files, eye-movements, brain imaging (e.g., fMRI, EEG) and other psychophysiological tools are welcome. User behavior with systems is too complex to be understood from subjective measures alone. This mini-track therefore seeks to foster a broader understanding with a diverse objective measure approaches. We solicit papers from a full range of epistemological, methodological, and data analytics approaches. The mini-track will solicit submissions in the following areas: - Research agendas that investigate IS adoption, acceptance or usage with objective measures - Research agendas that identify data science issues, privacy vulnerabilities, dark side of IT use and acceptance - Research agendas that investigate post adoption of usage behavior with analysis and evaluation of large data repositories - Research agendas that compare data analytics based methodologies with traditional survey or qualitative approaches in terms of validity and feasibility. - Papers that combine research and applied practice. Due to the increasing complexity raised by personalization of products, shorter innovation cycles and more connected supply chains, requirements for employees are rising steadily. On the one hand, more knowledge needs to be learned in shorter time and on the other hand, the knowledge needed for work tasks is less predictable. As a consequence, increased decision support is needed during the execution of business processes. Further, trends such as the delimitation of employment and employee empowerment require more decentralized decision support. However, digitization also offers opportunities to address these challenges. Especially, the increasing availability of (sensor) data about work process offer manifold opportunities to provide suitable decision support in work processes. This workshop discusses challenges in regard to digitization in industry as well as office environments and how data-driven solutions can address these challenges. Key questions are: How to make sense of the increasingly growing amount of (sensor) data available in production as well as office environments? How to provide meaningful decision support in work situations? Which data can be used for situation specific decision support and how can this context data be collected, especially with new sensors for retrofitting existing production equipment? Watson, University of Georgia Helen Hasan, University of Wollongong Alemayehu Molla, RMIT University Niels Bjorn-Andersen, Copenhagen Business School Abstract We contend that too few information systems (IS) academics engage in impactful research that offers solutions to global warming despite the fact that climate change is one of the most critical challenges facing this generation. Climate change is a major threat to global sustainability in the 21st century. Unfortunately, from submissions of our call for papers presenting IS solutions for environmental sustainability, we found only one paper worthy of publication. Given that IS have been the major force for productivity increases in the last half-century, we suggest that IS scholars should immerse themselves in creating solutions for environmental problems. Moreover, information is a perquisite for assessing the state of the environment and making appropriate decisions to ameliorate identified problems. Indeed, the IS scholarly community needs to help create a sustainable society. While there is an emerging body of IS scholarship under the banner of green IS, we strongly believe that we need to step up these efforts. Our experience indicates that the emergence of green IS as an academic discipline is still by far too slow relative to the needs of society. Too few people are working on green IS given its importance, and fewer still are publishing papers about IS solutions that could contribute to dealing with climate change. In this editorial, we speculate on some reasons for why and explore how the IS discipline can grasp the opportunity to contribute to one of the most important societal challenges of our time. We identify the major barriers that we assert curtail the involvement of IS scholars in green IS research; namely, incentives misalignment, the low status of practice science, data analysis poverty, identification of research scope, and research methods. To contribute to power grid stability, electric utilities must balance volatile supply by shifting demand. This measure of demand response depends on flexibility, which arises as the integration of information systems in the power grid grows. The option to shift electric loads to times of lower demand or higher supply bears an economic value. Following a design science research approach, we illustrate how to quantify this value to support decisions on short-term consumer compensation. We adapt real options theory to the design—a strategy that IS researchers have used widely to determine value under uncertainty. As a prerequisite, we develop a stochastic process, which realistically replicates intraday electricity spot price development. With this process, we design an artifact suitable for valuation, which we illustrate in a plug-in electric vehicle scenario. Following the artifact’s evaluation based on historical spot price data from the electricity exchange EPEX SPOT, we found that real options analysis works well for quantifying the value of information systems enabled flexibility in electricity consumption.
