Betreff: [AISWorld] 7th International Conference on Software Business
Datum: Thu, 18 Feb 2016 07:58:36 +0000
Von: Andrey Maglyas <Andrey.Maglyas(a)lut.fi>
An: aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
Reminder:
The 7th International Conference on Software Business will be held on June 13-14, 2016 at Ljubljana, Slovenia. The ICSOB 2016 addresses researchers and practitioners, who are involved in software business in different ways including large organizations and startups with focus on different types of software products and services.
Conference Theme: Software as a new way of providing cutting-edge solutions
Advancements in the software industry have had a substantial impact on productivity and GDP growth globally. There is a noticeable spillover within other industries (e.g. manufacturing) enabling new business models. Software business refers to commercial activities in and around the software industry aimed at generating income from the delivery of software products and services.
Although the business of software shares common features with other international knowledge-intensive businesses, it carries many inherent features. It is making it a challenging domain for research. The examples of many successful companies show that software provides unique benefit to its users. Moreover, software has spread all over the world and has permeated in many industries, which are not usual for software. In particular, software companies have to depend on one another to deliver a unique value proposition to their customers or a unique experience to their users.
Cross-functional use of software is a challenge for industry and academia, studying not only use of software but also software business, software production, and other surrounding themes. This year the conference intends to attract practitioners and researchers, who are concerned with software business in different ways as well as its introduction to new areas of research and practice. The main theme of 2016 focuses on addressing the challenges that software faces in its application in different business domains.
ICSOB 2016 intends to attract researchers and practitioners who are concerned with software business in different ways. You are invited to submit papers addressing contemporary issues emerging at the intersection of the software and business domains, broadly defined. Both papers reporting research results and industrial experiences are welcome.
We invite to submit research papers on the topics of interest that include, but are not limited to:
Software product management
Software platforms and ecosystems
Corporate networks between companies including software companies
Software business today and in the future
Licensing, intellectual property and patent issues
Business models of software companies
App economy
Impact on megatrends (e.g. customization) on software business
Effects of business models on software development
Global and cultural aspects of software business
Mobile software business trends
Games and gamification
Business models of cloud computing
Software business education
Mergers and acquisition in the software industry
Economics of software companies
We welcome both research and industry papers to the conference. The papers should be original and not submitted to or accepted by any other conference or journal. We are looking for short position and practice papers that provide insights on the lifecycle management of software products and industry case studies as well as full research papers describing novel approaches to software business for software products and services.

Special Issue on
Practical Design Methods for Software Architectures in the
Service-oriented Computing and Cloud Paradigms:
Challenging or Confirming Extant Scholastic Methods
Guest Editors: Manuel Mora, Rory OConnor, Frank Tsui, Jorge Marx-Gomez
Edited by: Rajkumar Buyya and R. Nigel Horspool
*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
The design of the architecture of system has been a critical relevant
activity in the systems engineering discipline from several decades for
the design of physical man-made systems. However, a reduced set of design
methods and complementary decision-making techniques have been
consistently used with successful results. In contrast, in the software
engineering discipline, there has been a vast scholastic research on
foundations, methods, and complementary techniques with a scarce
accumulative knowledge. Every design stream on software architecture
elaborates their own vocabulary and methods and usually ignores other
design streams. Additionally, there are most proprietary than open access
design methods, and a reduced set of well-accepted methods, techniques and
practices are still missing. Thus, software architecture design methods
are inconsistently or little used in the practice during the application
of software development methodologies except by the large system and
software development companies.
In particular software systems are widely demanded at present in two
co-existing paradigms: Software-oriented Computing (SOC) and the Cloud
Computing paradigms. SOC paradigm aims the development of medium-sized and
large distributed inter-organizational systems by assembling it (ideally)
as a system of service providers and consumers (called a Service-oriented
Computing Application (SOCA)). Thus, the design of SOCAs inherently
includes the challenges of high quality software architecture design,
given its natural composition by services provided by some entities and
consumed by others (independently of the self-services in the same SOCA).
In turn, the Cloud Computing paradigm aims to provide a cost-effective,
scalable and dynamic provision of IT resources (processing, storage,
networking) for elastic demands. This convergence of SOC and this emergent
paradigm, introduces new software architecture design challenges and
trade-off problems for achieving functional and non-functional
requirements of Software as Service (SaaS) as a whole entity assembled by
other composed and atomic services in the cloud.
Hence, we consider that: 1) the SOC and Cloud Computing applications
strongly dependently of their architectural designs; 2) practitioners
demand well-structured and practically applicable software architecture
design methods; 3) there are a scarcity of well-accepted software
architecture design methods; and 4) there is a wide gap between
theoretical recommendations and their daily utilization in the practice
for software engineers working in small, medium-sized and large companies.
Thus, a call for papers is required for high quality conceptual proposals
or already applied software architecture design methods for SOC and Cloud
Computing paradigms. This special issue aims lately to improve our
understanding and encourage the utilization of software architecture
design methods by being perceived as useful, ease of use, ease of learn,
compatible, and highly valued by practitioners. Accepted papers must
demonstrate clearly how their contributions advance the current status of
scholastic software architecture design methods.
The topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited
to:
Case studies of successful applied software architecture design methods
for SOC and Cloud Computing paradigms
Case studies of failed utilizations of software architecture design for
SOC and Cloud Computing paradigms
Usability studies on specific software architecture design methods for
SOC and Cloud Computing paradigms
Successful examples of inclusion of software architecture design methods
into agile software development methodologies for SOC and Cloud Computing
paradigms from practitioners perspectives.
Software architecture design methods for SOC and Cloud Computing
paradigms based on ISO/IEC standards (e.g. ISO 42010, ISO 12207, ISO
15288, among others).
Comparative studies of most recognized software architecture design
methods for SOC and Cloud Computing paradigms.
Cases on the development of prototype tools for supporting the software
architecture design tasks for SOC and Cloud Computing paradigms.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Open for manuscript submission in ScholarOne: July 1, 2016
Closed for submissions: August 1, 2016
Results of first round of reviews: October 1, 2016
Submission of revised manuscripts: November 1, 2016

Major Guidelines
The special issue requests original applied research papers that challenge
or confirm the current status of scholastic software architecture design
methods and complementary techniques through the report of usable
well-structured software architecture design methods in the SOC and Cloud
Computing paradigms.

versions of previous published research must provide at least 50% of new
material. For this case, authors must submit a cover letter/document with:
1) a comparative table of findings, contributions and limitations from
extended and initial paper; and 2) a brief justification on the extended
sections in the new paper.
Each submitted paper will be reviewed by two international reviewers at
least. The editorial review committee will be conformed by academic and
industry based people involved in the special issue themes.
Selection and Evaluation Criteria:
- Evidences of advances on the current status of scholastic software
architecture design methods
- Practical relevance to use and apply the method or contributions of the
paper
- Scope and criticality of the application domain of the method or
contributions of the paper

Description:
Due to fast changes in the economic environment enterprises face numerous
external as well as internal challenges which in turn require effective
governance and coordination of internal but also intercorporate business
processes. Therefore, the successful implementation, adoption, and use of
suitable software systems are essential for coping with these challenges.
These systems have to be easily adjustable to allow fast reactions to
continuous business changes. As a consequence there is a huge demand for
adaptable enterprise software. This especially applies to enterprise
resource planning (ERP) systems as fully integrated and comprehensive
solutions for supporting business processes on a company-wide level.
However, a tendency towards more architectural flexibility regarding
enterprise systems and also a certain rejection of strongly integrated
approaches can be observed. Today, enterprises increasingly aim to support
individual business areas with separate area- or task-specific systems. This
results, despite past efforts towards system consolidation, in heterogeneous
and complex software landscapes consisting of different software system
types and components (e.g., CRM, SRM, SCM or function-oriented components)
with challenging integration requirements. Additionally, managing these
landscapes becomes more demanding because powerful end user tools and
decentralized development of functionality not being part of the official
corporate IT (Shadow IT) bring in different strands of technology
(operational systems vs. groupware/social media). The possibility of running
systems in the cloud (software on demand, software as a service) widens the
range of options to become more flexible. However, benefitting from these
possibilities and chances is not a trivial task and calls for new management
approaches such as Lean IT or Two-Speed-IT Management.
Despite the experience of several decades, implementation-, adjustment- or
integration-projects on the company-level still heavily strain the entire
company and its resources as they imply severe intrusions into the
enterprises´ structures and processes. Changes resulting from these projects
possibly affect the corporate culture or even necessitate cultural change as
well. Thus, a comprehensive and well-designed project management embedded in
long-term transformation approaches still is an essential component of any
significant change in the enterprise system landscape.
This mini-track aims to discuss different facets and characteristics of the
transformation of traditional enterprise software systems and the resulting,
changing requirements towards enterprise structures and cultures as well as
related project and IT management topics. We intend to discuss both
substantial and technological problems as well as their effect on future
developments of enterprise software with interested researchers, software
developers and user groups.

Betreff: [AISWorld] AMCIS 2016: CFP Philosophy in Information Systems
Datum: Tue, 16 Feb 2016 19:22:10 +0000
Von: Alan Litchfield <alan.litchfield(a)aut.ac.nz>
An: AIS Mailing List <aisworld(a)lists.aisnet.org>
The SIG on Philosophy in Information Systems is delighted to call for your submissions to our three minitracks at AMCIS 2016 in San Diego
The role of philosophy in Information Systems (IS) is to question fundamental problems about the nature of realities encountered in IS disciplines, how to define and identify the existence of taxonomies, knowledge, human and other values, reason and logic, and the definition and use of language. In the field of IS, philosophy relies on rational argument as much as it does on practical evidence and therefore philosophy uniquely enables the presentation of new theory and the verification or replacement of old. Philosophy covers a broad range of expression from epistemology (the nature and scope of knowledge) to logic (the study of the principles of correct reasoning), from moral and political philosophy and ethics to other applied philosophies.
The Philosophy in Information Systems track provides a forum for scholars who are open to questioning all aspects of Information Systems and seeking to find ways for the field to progress. We invite papers that discuss philosophical aspects of the IS field from all IS domains, and from all angles and levels of inquiry.
Minitrack details:
Mini-track: Foundations of Information Systems
Chair: Nik Hassan, University of Minnesota at Duluth, nhassan(a)d.umn.edu<mailto:nhassan@d.umn.edu>
This mini-track provides a forum for every subfield in IS to analyze and reexamine the foundations of their subfield in light of exciting developments overtaking the IS field. All our research is based on some philosophical foundations whether we acknowledge them or not.
This mini-track provides IS subfields cause to pause and reflect whether or not they have successfully contributed to the progress and stewardship of their domain such that the IS field can truly meet the needs of society. We invite papers that discuss philosophical aspects of the IS field from all IS domains, and from all angles and levels of inquiry.
Topics relevant to this track include but not limited to:
• Philosophy of Technology
• Philosophy of Information
• Philosophy of Knowledge Management
• Foundations of IS Development
• Philosophy of Design Science
• Philosophy of IS education
• Philosophy of human computer interaction
• Reexamining "systems" in "information systems"
• Rethinking organization science research in IS
Mini-track: Theory versus practice in IS: how to bridge the gap?
Chair: Emmanuel Monod, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China emmanuel.monod(a)sjtu.edu.cn<mailto:emmanuel.monod@sjtu.edu.cn>
The gap between theory and practice in management has been described as a management crisis (Gulati, 2007), a tension between rigor and relevance (Starkey and Madan, 2001), a double hurdle (Pettigrew, 2001) or the “knowing-doing gap” (Mintzberg 2004; Spender 2007). This mini-track invites all kind of submissions around the following questions:
• how to improve academic research impact on management practice (Shapiro et al., 2007), including IS research?
• Is the “strategy-as-practice” movement (Peppard, Galliers and Thorogood, 2014) a way to bridge the gap in IS?
• how to develop theories of practice in the IS field? (Levina and Arriaga, 2014).
• How to develop in IS Mode 2 knowledge (Van Aken, 2004) designed to solve problems and likely to be produced in the workplace through reflection on practice?
• How to think about the practice of theorizing, like we do in Grounded theory, or theorizing as crafting (Bourdieu et al 1968)
Mini-track: People and Technology
Chair: Alan Litchfield, School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Auckland University of Technology, alan.litchfield(a)aut.ac.nz<mailto:alan.litchfield@aut.ac.nz>
The questions related to “People and Technology” range from the concept of dependence, for instance cell phone addiction, to emancipation, for instance access to information. They also include the social pressure that social networks may operate on individuals.
• How long can we stand without our cellphone before being excluded from our community of practice?
• How many communication mistakes can we make on a social network before being excluded from your private social community?
• In our corporations, in what respect do ERP systems constraint not only innovation? Does sending emails became a risk because they may be used against you?
• How do concepts such as sociomateriality (Orlikowski and Scott, 2008), “embodiment” (Dourish, 2011) “entanglement” or “dictature of the they” (Heidegger) allow to understand relationships between IT and people?
• At the corporate level, what happened to the ideal of socio-technical systems?
• Does IT reinforce control, or may it promote participative management?
Submission details:
Submissions open now
Deadline for submissions is March 2, 2016
