Betreff: [AISWorld] PACIS 2016- "Ethics and Information Systems" track
Datum: Sat, 13 Feb 2016 12:26:36 +1300
Von: Angsana T. <angsana.t(a)gmail.com>
An: AISWorld(a)lists.aisnet.org
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to consider submitting a paper to the "Ethics
and Information Systems" track at PACIS 2016. The growing awareness in
society of the important role of businesses in addressing broader societal
issues indicates that, in the future, IS management and governance should
expand to consider ethical issues more closely, especially by incorporating
the concerns of a wider group of parties, beyond the supply chain of each
organization. In short, management and governance should shift towards a
stewardship view, away from a transactional and agentic view (Davis,
Schoorman & Donaldson, 1997).
PACIS 2016 will be held in Chiayi, Taiwan from June 27 to July 1. The
deadline for submissions is Friday, March 4, 2016 and the instructions for
authors can be found here: http://www.pacis2016.org/Page/Index/78

# Introduction:
“The economy accepts every advance in technology with a view to profit,
without concern for its potentially negative impact on human beings.” (Pope
Francis, Laudato Si, 2015)
This track calls for papers that examine the role of ethics in the use,
management and development of information systems (IS). As individuals and
organizations interact with information technology (IT) daily, they
encounter a variety of ethical issues, such as privacy, sustainability, and
social equity. However, research in the IS field on ethical issues is
either minimal or fragmented (Smith, 2002; Mingers & Walsham, 2010). This
is surprising, given the increased pervasiveness of IS in organizations and
society, but understandable, given the tendency among policy-makers and
businesspeople to focus on its narrow functional features and economic
benefits, while understating its broader and long-term effects. This track
encourages researchers to contribute to this field by crafting connections
across diverse phenomena based on shared underlying principles and theories
to provide guidance to academics, practitioners and policymakers.
# Overview:
The growing ubiquity of IT in society over the last few decades has
traditionally been accompanied by praises for the efficiency savings it has
led to. These have taken the form of improved coordination, cheaper
communication, and an increase in the ease of carrying out transactions,
which have been visible across all layers of society - e.g., individuals,
organizations, and communities – as well as at different levels of economic
activity – e.g., businesses, supply chains, and industries.
However, there is growing interest in adopting a broader perspective on the
impacts of IT on societies, as seen in the recent special issues in the
Information Systems Journal (“The Dark Side of IT, May 2015) and MIS
Quarterly (“ICT and Social Challenges”, Forthcoming). A few issues drive
this revived attention on the broader repercussions of IT. First, there is
a growing awareness that IT-enabled phenomena, such as the sharing economy
(e.g., AirBnB), on-demand services (e.g., Uber, Task Rabbit), and markets
for micro-tasks (e.g., Amazon’s Mechanical Turk), are either leveraging on
or aggravating societal challenges, such as income inequality, regulatory
capture by corporations, and the shrinking role of the state (Kuttner,
2013; Singer, 2014). Second, the rapid growth of the market for mobile
computing devices targeted at consumers, whose use spills over into
workplaces, has led to concern over the disposal of electronic waste, which
is often sent to less economically-advanced countries. Alongside these
issues are other concerns, such as the increased monitoring of individual
activities enabled by the widespread use of mobile devices and online
interaction (Boyd & Crawford, 2012; Newell & Marabelli, 2015), the
hollowing-out of technical careers in industrialized countries because of
the extensive use of outsourcing and automation (Brynjolfsson & McAfee,
2011), and various forms of IT-enabled crime.
While research on these developments, most of which gained prominence over
the last few years, has been carried out, the focus has been on their
functional features, outcomes, and contextual applications. Although useful
and valuable, what has been rarer is research on how these phenomena embody
ethical choices, which are often latent and not made explicit (Sojer et al.
2014). For example, some on-demand services are seen as attempts at ethical
arbitrage, as their business model exploits loopholes in regulations
(Lazonick & Mazzucato, 2013). Another example is that while crowdsourcing
the completion of micro-tasks may be efficient for firms, the global nature
of the platforms leads to a “race to the bottom” in terms of the wages paid
to the workers. A third illustration is the use of staff scheduling
information systems that do not guarantee a minimum number of hours for
employees, but instead place them “on demand” so that they have to appear
for work at very short notice. Finally, although the “sharing economy”
appears to be an efficient mechanism for individuals to obtain more value
from their assets, this benefit is only available for those who own assets
in the first place, thereby serving to entrench socio-economic differences.
The phenomena listed above may seem to be a disparate collection. However,
they are related in that studying them requires an understanding of ethical
principles and an appreciation of the value of examining impacts across
multiple time horizons and levels of analysis when making decisions (Culnan
& Williams, 2009). Studying these phenomena is important because it
provides a more comprehensive picture of the impact of IT on our societies,
and surfaces the trade-offs that are being made, sometimes subtly and at
other times, more obviously. Who gains and loses, and when, because of
decisions made about the design, use, and management of information
systems? Are these outcomes apparent to those responsible for their staff
and systems (Chatteree, Sarker & Valacich, 2015)? Do such decisions differ
across public and private sector organizations? Have such issues become
more prevalent now, or are they just more visible, given the proliferation
in the number of channels individuals can use to broadcast their cases?
# Topics
Researchers are encouraged to submit papers on the ethical aspects of IS
use, management and development across all levels of analysis: individual,
organizational, industrial and national. Possible topics of interest in
this track include, but are not limited to:
● Frameworks or models for IS architecture that incorporate ethical
concerns; ● The governance of algorithms used in key public and/or private
processes, such as security, utilities, and finance; ● Measuring the
externalities of the sharing economy; ● Accounting for e-waste during the
IS planning process; ● The impact of various innovations on socio-economic
differences and well-being of employees and citizens; ● Ethical and
societal impact of government and organizational policies and practices
that promote economic benefits of IT; ● Ethical and societal implications
of new media and IT; ● Frameworks to evaluate ethical impacts of IT; We
expect both completed papers and research-in-progress papers for this
track, using a variety of methodologies. We also encourage workshops on
topics such as:
● Teaching ethics as part of information systems courses; ● Ethical
frameworks and their application; ● Planning, development and use of
socially inclusive technology

The FAS* 2016 Steering Committee invites proposals for the Workshop Program to be held along with the technical conferences SASO 2016 and ICCAC 2016. FAS*W workshops will provide a meeting for presenting novel ideas in a less formal and possibly more focused way than the conferences themselves. Their aim is to stimulate and facilitate active exchange, interaction, and comparison of approaches, methods, and ideas related to specific topics, both theoretical and applied, in the general area of Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems as well as Cloud and Autonomic Computing. To motivate the discussion and participation of all the workshop attendants, we encourage organizers to get away of the typical "mini-conference" format of a workshop, and include more discussion sessions, panels, etc. Members from all areas of the SASO and ICCAC communities are invited to submit workshop proposals for review. Workshops on global challenges, applications or on new and emerging topics are particularly encouraged. Workshops can vary in length, but most will be one full day in duration. Optionally, if desired by the organizers, workshop proceedings can be published through IEEE. Attendance of workshops will be included in the registration fee for the main SASO/ICCAC conference.

Short overview - see below
==========================================================
Goals
-----
While practitioners are trying to overcome the restrictions of workflow
thinking, the research on the topic is somewhat lagging. The goal of
this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to
discuss theoretical and practical problems and solutions in the area of
non-workflow based approaches to BPM in general, and Adaptive Case
Management (as a leading movement) in particular. This workshop is aimed
to promote new, non-traditional ways of modelling and controlling
business processes, the ones that promote and facilitate collaboration
and creativity in the frame of business processes.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
------
- Analysis of situations where workflow-based systems do not fit;
reports on real-life cases where it has been revealed
- Characteristics and application area for Adaptive Case Management
- Theoretical views on business processes not based on the workflow that
can serve as a scientific basis for ACM, and other non-workflow software
systems/services that help process participants to run their processes
- Comparative analysis of tools and applications that support ACM
- Process mining and process analysis in ACM
- Knowledge management for ACM
- Intelligent systems for knowledge worker support
- Process management based on cooperation
- Non-prescriptive process specifications (e.g. constraint-based,
declarative, etc.)
- Non-workflow paradigms and process modeling methodologies
- Comparison ACM vs. BPM/workflow, e.g. Supporting vs. Controlling
- Empirical studies of Case Management Processes
- Level of automation achievable in ACM that does not convert ACM into
workflow
- Process improvement for Case Management Processes
- Teaching Case and Adaptive Case Management

AMCIS2016 (San Diego) submissions are open. For full details, please visit http://amcis2016.aisnet.org
This year, you can submit Emergent Research Forum (ERF) papers, which provide you a platform to showcase your cutting-edge in-progress research in multiple formats. You should submit your ERF paper through the AMCIS 2016 submission system to the appropriate mini-tracks that fit your work, and your work will go through the same review process as for full/completed papers (i.e., the track or mini-track chairs will solicit feedback from multiple reviewers, include their own assessment, and make a recommendation to the AMCIS Program/ERF Chairs).
Due Date: Same as regular initial submissions on March 2, 2016
Length: 5 pages all inclusive (approx. 2,500 words, including figures, tables, references, and appendices)
Format: Consistent with the AMCIS submission requirements: Call for Papers (http://amcis2016.aisnet.org/index.php/sessions/call-for-papers )
Once the review process has concluded, if your ERF paper is accepted, you may choose to submit for the proceedings: a) an abstract of the paper OR b) a 5-page paper all inclusive (approx. 2,500 words, including figures, tables, references, and appendices) for publication. Authors have the opportunity to decide the content for the proceedings and the format for the presentations. Authors retain much of the content and copyright to embellish their work and submit for a journal publication.

*GROUP 2016*
*ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work*
November 13-16, 2016, Sanibel Island, Florida, USA
http://www.acm.org/conferences/group/conferences/group16/
*Program co-chairs:*
Myriam Lewkowicz, Troyes University of Technology, France
Michael Muller, IBM Research, USA
*Conference co-chairs:*
Stephan Lukosch, Delft University of Technology, Netherlands
Aleksandra Sarcevic, Drexel University, USA
*General Information*
For over 25 years, the ACM International Conference on Supporting Group
Work is a premier venue for research on Computer Supported Cooperative
Work, Human Computer Interaction, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
and Socio-Technical Studies. The conference integrates work in social
science, computer science, engineering, design, values, and other diverse
topics of interest and concern. Group 2016 continues the tradition of being
truly international in both organizational structure as well as
participants.
Key goals for the program are to encourage and facilitate researchers
within CSCW and HCI to interact across disciplinary boundaries. We
encourage high-level research contributions from interdisciplinary groups
to present work which might be difficult to place within one simple
category. We are open for a plurality of research methods, and are looking
forward to the latest findings within broad areas such as systems, society,
participation, critique, collaboration, and human interaction in different
types of collaborative practices. GROUP 2016 in particular would like to
encourage practitioners, industrial partners, academics, and other
interested people to participate. Participation can take different forms;
for the first time in 2016, authors of newly published papers from the
Journal of CSCW (http://link.springer.com/journal/10606) will have the
occasion to present their papers at the conference.
*Submissions to the conference are welcome in the form of:*
● Research Papers (both short and long). This venue gives the occasion to
present and interact with the audience. Accepted papers will be published
in the Conference Proceedings and ACM Digital Library. Please use the ACM
standard format for submissions. We invite archival submissions in the form
of either full Papers or shorter contributions (Notes). A Note is a brief
report of a more limited, but definitive, outcome or theoretical
development. There is no page limit for Papers or Notes, although clear
rationale should be given for Papers that exceed 10 pages or for Notes that
exceed 4 pages.
● Work-in-Progress Papers (WP). Carried-over from 2014, WPs are
contributions in which the authors are working towards an archival journal
submission and would like to discuss their work with their colleagues at
GROUP. Our goal is to broaden the conversations at GROUP, with a format
that may appeal to colleagues whose primary publications are in journals,
rather than conference papers. WPs will not be published in the conference
proceedings, but will be distributed in a paper based conference supplement
at the GROUP conference for the attendees only. Therefore, you are free to
seek formal publication of a draft journal submission that appears in a WP.
The WP review process will be *lightweight*, without any revisions asked to
the authors, to expand the GROUP community and discussions. Please send
submissions directly to co-chairs at workingpapers(a)group2016.org.
● Future visions (new in 2016). Description will be provided in later.
● Posters and demos. Posters and demos are an opportunity to present
late-breaking and preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a
Paper or Note submission, innovative ideas not yet validated through user
studies, student research in early phases, and other research best
presented in this open format. Posters and demos will be displayed at a
special session in the conference when poster and demo authors will be
available to discuss their work. Poster submissions should include an
extended abstract no longer than 4 pages, including all figures and
references, in ACM Standard Format (available here). In addition,
submissions should also include a separate Tabloid (A3 or 11 x 17 inches)
sized draft of the poster for review purposes. Both the extended abstract
and the poster draft should include author names (these are not anonymous
submissions). Please send submissions directly to co-chairs at
posters(a)group2016.org.
● Workshops. Workshops provide an informal and focused environment for the
information exchange and discussion of Group related topics. We offer half
or full day workshop venues. Proposals should include an abstract (max 150
words), a title, description of workshop theme, aim, goals, activities and
potential outcomes. It should also specify audio/visual equipment needed,
maximum number of participants, the duration of the workshop (half or full
day) and the names and backgrounds of the organizer(s). Please submit a
maximum of four pages, using the ACM standard format for submissions. We
encourage topics suitable for developing new ideas and deep discussions.
Please send submissions directly to co-chairs at workshops(a)group2016.org.
● Doctoral Colloquium. The Doctoral Colloquium provides a forum for sharing
ongoing Ph.D. projects of participants with other advanced Ph.D. students
and distinguished faculty for mentoring and feedback. Space is limited, so
an application of up to four pages is required, in the ACM standard format.
Please contact the workshop co-chairs at dc(a)group2016.org. Accepted
research papers, notes, posters, and doctoral consortium extended abstracts
are published in the ACM Press Conference Proceedings and in the ACM
digital Library. Accepted Workshop proposals will be published in a
paper-based supplement.
*Conference Topics:*
● Theoretical and/or conceptual issues about key concepts relevant to CSCW
and HCI, including critique.
● Social, behavioral, and computational studies of collaboration and
communication.
● Technical architectures supporting collaboration.
● New tool/toolkits for collaborative technologies.
● Ethnographic studies of collaborative practices.
● Coordination and workflow technology.
● Social computing and contexts of collaboration.
● Online communities, including issues of privacy, identity, trust, and
participation.
● Cooperative knowledge management.
● Organizational issues of technology design, use, or adaptation.
● Strategies for use of technology in business, government, and newer forms
of organizations.
● Emerging technologies in work, home, leisure, entertainment, or education.
● Learning at the workplace (CSCL at work, Technology-Enhanced Learning,
TEL).
● Co-located and geographically-distributed teams, global collaboration.
● Cultural and cross-cultural collaboration and communication.
● Mobile and wearable technologies in collaboration.
● Innovative forms of human computer interaction for cooperative
technologies.
