Invited Topics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We solicit paper submissions reporting on rigorous research on methodologies, studies, analyses, tools, or technologies for learning at scale. Learning at Scale includes MOOCs, games (including massively multiplayer online games), citizen science communities, and other types of learning environments which (a) provide learning experiences to large number of learners and/or (b) produce detailed, high volume data about the learning process. Papers that tackle specific aspects of scale are particularly encouraged, for example, papers that deal with learning or educational phenomena that can only occur, be supported, or be observed with very large numbers of students, or in which the system improves after being exposed to data from previous use by many students.
Example topics include but are not limited to:
* Usability studies and effectiveness studies of design elements for students or instructors, including:
* Status indicators of student progress
* Status indicators of instructor effectiveness
* Tools and pedagogy to promote community, support learning, or increase retention in at-scale environments
* Log analysis of student behavior, e.g.:
* Assessing reasons for student outcome as determined by modifying tool design
* Modeling students based on responses to variations in tool design
* Evaluation strategies such as quiz or discussion forum design
* Instrumenting systems and data representation to capture relevant indicators of learning.
* Personalization and adaptation, based on log data, user modeling, or choice.
* Studies of applications of existing learning theories to the MOOC context (peer learning, project based learning, etc.).
* Informing theories of learning at scale.
* Large online learning in the developing world
* New tools and techniques for learning at scale, including:
* Games for learning at scale
* Automated feedback tools (for essay writing, programming, etc)
* Automated grading tools
* Tools for interactive tutoring
* Tools for learner modeling
* Interfaces for harnessing learning data at scale
* Innovations in platforms for supporting learning at scale
* Tools to support for capturing, managing learning data
* Tools and techniques for managing privacy of learning data
* Investigation of observable student behaviors and their correlation if any with learning, e.g.:
* What do more successful learners do more of?
* What do more successful instructors do more of?
* Self- and co-regulation of learning at scale
* Collaborative learning in courses that have scale
* Depth and retention of learning and understanding
* Improvements to learning, community, and pedagogy in large-scale in-person and blended online and in-person courses
* Instructional principles for learning at scale
* Facilitation of informal subcommunities
Paper Submissions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We invite full paper, shorter papers reporting on work-in-progress, and demonstrations.
### Full Papers
Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (shorter is fine) and must use the ACM CHI Archive Format, available in latex[1] and Word[2]. Submissions must be in PDF format, written in English, contain original work and not be under review for any other venue while under review for this conference. All papers should be submitted through the EasyChair.
In order to increase high quality papers and independent merit, the evaluation process will be double blind. The papers submitted for review MUST NOT contain the authors' names, affiliations, or any information that may disclose the authors' identity (this information is to be restored in the camera-ready version upon acceptance). Please replace author names and affiliations with Xs on submitted papers. In particular, in the version submitted for review please avoid explicit auto-references, such as "in [1] we show" -- consider "in [1] it is shown". I.e., you should cite your own relevant previous work, so that a reviewer can access it and see the new contributions, but yet the text should be written so that it does not state that the cited work belongs to the authors.
### Work-in-Progress
A Work-in-Progress (WiP) is a concise report of recent findings or other types of innovative or thought-provoking work that has not yet reached a level of completion that would warrant submission of a full paper. Topics are the same as those listed for full papers.
At the conference, all accepted WiP submissions will be presented in poster form. Selected WiPs may be invited for oral presentation during the conference. Rejected full-papers can be resubmitted as WiP and will be evaluated accordingly.
Formatting: Work-in-Progress submissions 4 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. Due to the very rapid selection process we cannot offer any extensions to the deadline. WiP submissions are not anonymous and should therefore include all author names, affiliations and contact information. If accepted, you should expect to prepare a poster to present at the conference venue. WiP submissions should be submitted through the EasyChair.
### Demonstrations
Demonstrations show aspects of learning at scale in an interactive hands-on form. A live demonstration is a great opportunity to communicate ideas and concepts in a powerful way that a regular presentation cannot. We invite demonstrations of learning and analytical environments and other systems that have direct relevance to learning at scale. We especially encourage authors of accepted papers and industrial partners to showcase their technologies using this format. Demonstration submissions are 2 pages or fewer in length in the Extended Abstracts Format[3] and submitted as a PDF file. A demonstration proposal should address two components:
* The merit and nature of the demonstrated technology. If the proposed demonstration is associated with a Full Paper or a WiP submission, please point to the title of the submission instead of repeating the information here.
* Details of how the demo will be executed in practice, and how visitors will interact with it during the conference.
Proposals for demonstrations should be submitted through the EasyChair.
### Archival Proceedings
Full papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by the ACM Press in the ACM Digital Library. Work-in-Progress and Demonstration papers will appear in a separate part of the conference proceedings. The status of Work-in-Progress paper will be akin to what CHI describes as "semi-archival", meaning the results reported in the WIP must be original, but copyright is retained by the authors and the material can be used as the basis for future publications in ACM venues as long as there are significant revisions from the original.
Proceedings from prior years can be accessed here:
* L@S 2014 Proceedings (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2556325).
* L@S 2015 Proceedings (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2724660).
### Submission Instructions
Full Papers and Work in Progress should be submitted at EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=las2016).

Introduction
In parallel with Petrol as a driving resource in this world, Data is
becoming an increasingly decisive resource in modern societies, economies,
and governmental organizations. Gradually and steadily, it is being
world-wide recognised that data and talents are playing key roles in modern
businesses.
As an interdisciplinary area, Data Science draws scientific inquiry from a
broad range of subject areas such as statistics, mathematics, computer
science, machine learning, optimization, signal processing, information
retrieval, databases, cloud computing, computer vision, natural language
processing and etc. Data Science is on the essence of deriving valuable
insights from data. It is emerging to meet the challenges of processing
very large datasets, i.e. Big Data, with the explosion of new data
continuously generated from various channels such as smart devices, web,
mobile and social media.
Data intensive systems are posing many challenges in exploiting parallelism
of current and upcoming computer architectures. Data volumes of
applications in the fields of sciences and engineering, finance, media,
online information resources, etc. are expected to double every two years
over the next decade and further. With this continuing data explosion, it
is necessary to store and process data efficiently by utilizing enormous
computing power. The importance of data intensive systems has been raising
and will continue to be the foremost fields of research. This raise brings
up many research issues, in forms of capturing and accessing data
effectively and fast, processing it while still achieving high performance
and high throughput, and storing it efficiently for future use. Innovative
programming models, high performance scalable computing platforms,
efficient storage systems and expression of data requirements are at
immediate need.
DSDIS (Data Science and Data Intensive Systems) was created to provide a
prime international forum for researchers, industry practitioners and
domain experts to exchange the latest advances in Data Science and Data
Intensive Systems as well as their synergy.

25th Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems (WITS)
December 12-13, 2015
Naveen Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas
Web Site: http://wits2015.binghamton.edu/
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to announce that WITS - 2015 will be held at the Naveen Jindal School of Management on the campus of the University of Texas at Dallas on December 12-13, 2015. This year, the workshop will be held prior to the ICIS conference. This is a particularly exciting year for us, as this will the 25th anniversary for the Workshop.
The theme of WITS 2015 is: Cloud Computing Management. With cloud computing rapidly gaining popularity, a whole host of management issues arise both for the vendor and client. Both sides have to address, technical, security and privacy issues. Both sides also have to address the costs and benefits of the relationships as well as the contracting aspects of the relationship. Risk management and compliance issues must also be well defined in the contract between cloud computing provider and customer. Further, the increasing use of mobile devices for accessing resources in the cloud brings a new set of challenges. Hence, we solicit papers that will focus on technical, privacy, security, risk management as well as contracting issues in the new era of cloud computing. Papers that address issues from the vendor side relating to optimal allocation or determination of resources, managing the cloud, security breaches from client side affecting them as well as other aspects of managing the env
ironment are also solicited.
In addition to papers directly related to the theme, the workshop is inclusive and seeks research papers from a broad range of topics. Note that the Workshop is focused on addressing complex business problems or societal issues using current and emerging information technologies. We also encourage research that can change the way information technology functions (e.g., by designing, modifying, or constructing systems) so that they can better solve real-world problems. All problem-solving paradigms - including empirical, analytical, behavioral, experimental, and computational - are invited. Integrative approaches, whether methodological or functional, are welcome. WITS research is often prescriptive (toward providing a solution to a problem), rather than descriptive (explaining a phenomenon), unless the explanation clearly helps in developing a solution. We particularly invite work that is early, but has the potential to make a significant impact - innovation and novelty are at leas
t as important as completeness and rigor. More details and important dates are available at: http://wits2015.binghamton.edu/. Please mark these dates on your calendar. We are looking forward to seeing you in Dallas this December.
Best regards,
WITS 2015 Co-chairs
Varghese Jacob (UT Dallas) and Subodha Kumar (Texas A&M University)

Call for Papers in the Special Section: Journal of Information Technology Services (JITS)
New Ways of Working: Changing Nature of Work with ICT
Guest Editors: Jungwoo Lee, Professor, Yonsei University
Sandeep Purao, Professor, Penn State University
SUBMISSION DUE: July 26, 2015 / Published in September 2015 Issue (Quick Turnaround)
JITS will be publishing a series of special section in 2015 dedicated to “new ways of working: changing nature of work with ICT.” With smart technologies, the very nature of work is changing. As work is deeply embedded in the fabric of our life, rules and institutions of our society change. Although many studies have been conducted concerning business process innovations and new business models, studies concerning what people actually do in these new processes and organizations are very scarce.
We invite practitioners as well as academics to submit insights, frameworks, cases and research contributions concerning the changing nature of work and the evolving workplace practices. The scope will be shaped only by the imaginations and creativity of authors.
JITS welcomes different investigative approaches including conceptual, organizational, behavioral, economic, social and technological ones. Submissions of manuscripts dealing with trans-disciplinary issues across different domains and methods are strongly encouraged. We are interested in developing research frameworks and issues, and welcome qualitative and/or prescriptive research, especially studies that can help readers to conceptualize new ways of working including technologies and social institutions, that are archetypical of new information and knowledge based economies. We also welcome quantitative pieces shedding lights on the changing nature of work.
JITS is published quarterly on March, June, September, and December. Manuscripts for these special sections will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout 2015. Guest editors assure that the initial review for each submission will take less than a month. For any questions or comments, contact the admin support at jits.editor(a)gmail.com.
Submission Instructions
1. To submit a manuscript, go to the website (https://jits.kr) and follow the directions. If you are using the system first time, you need to create your account. For any questions, email at jits.editor(a)gmail.com.
2. Please submit your manuscript as a single file to be used in the refereeing process. This can be a PDF file or a Word document, in any format or lay-out that can be used by referees to evaluate your manuscript. It should contain high enough quality figures for refereeing. There are no strict formatting requirements but all manuscripts must contain the essential elements needed to convey your manuscript, for example abstract, keywords, introduction, materials and methods, results, conclusions.
3. Once accepted, you will be provided with a template for final version.
4. All submitted articles will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.

*Future Generation Computer Systems (Elsevier)*
*Special issue on Security, Privacy and Trust of the User-centric Solutions*
In future computing environments, due to the ongoing development of
pervasive and smart technologies, movement towards user-centric
solutions must be paramount. The frameworks for everyday personal
computing devices, including smartphones, smart cards and sensors, are
becoming user-centric instead of issuer-centric. User-centric solutions
can target a wide range of applications, ranging from individual devices
communicating with other connected devices, through to data-sharing in
cloud computing and open grids on very powerful computing systems.
User-centric solutions address the devices themselves and the ways in
which they communicate, i.e., the networks and the end-user
applications. The key factor in the success of user-centric solutions is
the peace of mind of users. To achieve this the security, privacy and
trust in the user-centric ecosystem for any device must be ensured.
This special issue aims to further scientific research within the field
of security, privacy and trust for user-centric solutions. It will
accept original research papers that report the latest results and
advances in this area. It also invites review articles that focus on the
state of the art in security, privacy and trust solutions for
user-centric devices, network and applications, highlighting trends and
challenges. The papers will be peer reviewed and will be selected on the
